Objectives: This study aimed to identify whether fear of activity predicts exercise capacity in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and whether there is a difference between sexes regarding this relationship. Patients and methods: One hundred ninety-seven patients (145 males, 52 females; mean age: 56.3±10.8 years; range, 22 to 80 years) with a diagnosis of CAD or cardiac event in the previous one to 60 months were enrolled in this cross-sectional multicenter study between November 2015 and February 2017. Demographic and clinical features were recorded. Fear of activity was assessed by the fear of activity scale in patients with CAD (FactCAD). A 6-min walk test was used to assess exercise capacity. Results: Female participants were older, less educated, and less employed (p=0.045, p=0.048, and p<0.001, respectively) than males. Prevalence of myocardial infarction was higher in males. Comorbidities were higher in females. Multiple linear regression predicted 6-min walk distance (6MWD) based on FactCAD, sex, and education level with an r-squared of 0.321 (p<0.001). Fear of activity had an effect on walking distance in males (each additional score of FactCAD predicts a decrease of 1.3 m in 6MWD), together with disease duration, presence of chronic pulmonary disease, and low back pain, whereas fear of activity was not a predicting factor on walking distance in females. Age, education, and presence of angina predicted 6MWD in females. Conclusion: This study emphasizes that fear of activity is one of the predictors of 6MWD in males with CAD, and its assessment is recommended as a possible barrier to rehabilitation.

The aim of this study was to compare the effect of high-intensity interval training (HIIT) and moderate-intensity continuous training (MICT) with equal energy expenditure on glycaemic and cardiometabolic risk factors in people with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) when compared to the control. Sixty-three people with T2DM were randomly assigned to HIIT, MICT, or non-exercising controls. Individuals were trained with HIIT at 90 and 30% of their VO2peak (1:2 min ratio) starting from 8 up to 16 intervals and MICT at 50% of VO2peak, on a cycle ergometer, 3 times/week for 12 weeks under supervision. The primary outcome measure was the change in HbA1c. Aerobic capacity, cardiovascular responses, anthropometric measures, body composition, glycaemic, and cardiometabolic risk factors were measured at the beginning and the end of the 12-week training period. There was no significant difference between HIIT and MICT or when compared to the control for HbA1c, glucose, insulin resistance, blood lipids, cardiovascular responses, anthropometric measures, body composition, and abdominal and visceral fat (padj > 0.05). HIIT and MICT increased VO2peak significantly compared to controls (p < 0.05) but not to each other (p > 0.05). Both HIIT and MICT improved VO2peak and HbA1c after 12 weeks of training compared to their baseline, furthermore, only MICT caused additional improvements in cardiovascular responses, anthropometric measures, and abdominal fat compared to baseline (p < 0.05). As a conclusion, isoenergetic HIIT or MICT did not improve HbA1c. The two protocols were equally efficient for improvement in aerobic capacity but had little effect on other cardiometabolic factors.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT03682445.HighlightsHIIT and MICT with equal energy expenditure were equally efficient for aerobic capacity compared to controls.Isoenergetic HIIT or MICT were not superior for improving HbA1c.Isoenergetic HIIT and MICT were not superior to each other for anthropometric measures, body composition, and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate long COVID patients with persistent respiratory symptoms through the application of the World Health Organization (WHO) International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) framework. Patients and methods: This national, prospective, multicenter, cross-sectional study was conducted with 213 patients (118 females, 95 males; median age 56 years; range, 20 to 85 years) with long COVID between February 2022 and November 2022. The ICF data were primarily collected through patient interviews and from the acute medical management records, physical examination findings, rehabilitation outcomes, and laboratory test results. Each parameter was linked to the Component Body Functions (CBF), the Component Body Structures (CBS), the Component Activities and Participation (CAP), the Component Environmental Factors (CEF), and Personal Factors according to the ICF linking rules. Analysis was made of the frequency of the problems encountered at each level of ICF category and by what percentage of the patient sample. Results: In the ICF, 21 categories for CBF, 1 category for CBS, and 18 categories of CAP were reported as a significant problem in a Turkish population of long COVID patients with persistent respiratory symptoms. Furthermore, eight categories for CEF were described as a facilitator, and four as a barrier. Conclusion: These results can be of guidance and provide insight into the identification of health and health-related conditions of long COVID patients with persistent respiratory symptoms beyond the pathophysiological aspects, organ involvement, and damage of COVID-19. The ICF can be used in patients with long COVID to describe the types and magnitude of impairments, restrictions, special needs, and complications.

ABSTRACT Objective The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of intravaginal electrical stimulation (IVES) therapies with different treatment frequencies (two or five days in a week) added to bladder training (BT) on incontinence-related quality of life (QoL) and clinical parameters in women with refractory idiopathic overactive bladder (OAB). Material and Methods Fifty-two women with refractory idiopathic OAB were randomized into two groups as follows: Group 1 (n:26) received BT and IVES, two times in a week, for 10 weeks and Group 2 (n:26) received BT and IVES five times in a week, for 4 weeks. IVES was performed 20 minutes in a day, a total of 20 sessions for both groups. Women were evaluated for incontinence severity (24h pad test), pelvic floor muscles strength (perineometer), 3-day voiding diary (frequency of voiding, nocturia, incontinence episodes, and the number of pads), symptom severity (OAB-V8), quality of life (IIQ-7), treatment success (positive response rate), cure/improvement rate and treatment satisfaction (Likert scale). Results There was no statistically significant differences in all parameters between the two groups at the end of the treatment. It was found that the treatment satisfaction scores, cure/improvement and positive response rates were not significantly different between two groups (p>0.05). Conclusion We concluded that the application of IVES twice a week or 5 times a week added to BT were both effective on incontinence-related QoL and clinical parameters in women with refractory idiopathic OAB. These two IVES frequencies had similar clinical efficacy and patient satisfaction with a slight difference between them; 5 times per week IVES has a shorter treatment duration.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to investigate the effect of 8-week whole-body vibration (WBV) added to conventional training on muscular architecture, dynamic muscle strength and physical performance compared to controls in young basketball players. METHODS: Sixteen young basketball players between the ages of 14-16 years were randomly assigned to whole body vibration group (VG) or control group (CG). Both groups were trained with a conventional program. Pennation angle (PeA), fascicle length and muscle thickness of Rectus Femoris (RF) and Vastus lateralis were measured by ultrasonography. Isokinetic dynamic muscle testing at 180 °/s and 60°/s, squat jump (SJ) and flexibility were evaluated before and after 8 weeks of training programs. Primary outcome measure was the fascicle length. RESULTS: Fascicle length of RF, SJ height and flexibility increased significantly within VG compared to pretraining (p<0.05). SJ height increased in VG compared to CG significantly following training (p<0.05). PeA, fascicle length, muscle thicknesses, strength and flexibility did not differ between groups. CONCLUSION: Eight weeks of WBV training improved fascicle length of RF, SJ height, and flexibility compared to pre-training. Addition of WBV to conventional training did not cause improvement in muscle architecture, strength and flexibility compared to conventional training alone.

Objectives: This study aimed to investigate the physical and emotional effects of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) and chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients. Patients and methods: The cross-sectional controlled study was performed with 1,360 participants (332 males, 1,028 females; mean age: 42.3±12.5 years; range, 18 to 65 years) between September 2020 and February 2021. The participants were evaluated in three groups: the FMS group (n=465), the CLBP group (n=455), and the healthy control group (n=440). Physical activity, pain levels, and general health status before and during the pandemic were evaluated in all participants. Stress levels were analyzed with the perceived stress scale (PSS) in all groups, and disease activity was analyzed with the fibromyalgia impact questionnaire (FIQ) in patients with FMS. Results: Patients with FMS had worsened general health status and pain levels during the pandemic compared to the other groups (p<0.01). The FMS group showed significantly higher PSS scores than those in other groups (p<0.01). There was a weak-positive correlation between FIQ and PSS parameters in patients with FMS (p<0.05, r=0.385). Conclusion: The general health status, pain, and stress levels of the patients with FMS and CLBP tended to worsen during the pandemic. This high-stress level appeared to affect disease activity in patients with FMS.

Objectives: This study aims to compare the efficacy of three different exercise types on pain, health-related quality of life (HRQoL), depression, and body composition in women with fibromyalgia (FM). Patients and methods: Between June 2019 and December 2019, a total of 41 women with FM (mean age: 46.7+9.4 years; range, 24 to 62 years) were randomly allocated into Group 1 (n=13, supervised aerobic plus stretching), Group 2 (n=13, supervised resistance plus stretching), and Group 3 (n=15, home-based stretching). All exercises were performed three times per week for 12 weeks and were individualized by measuring the maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) for aerobic exercise and one-repetition maximum (1-RM) test for resistance exercise. The main measures were pain intensity assessed by the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), severity by the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), symptoms of depression by the Beck Depression Inventory, HRQoL by the Short-Form Health Questionnaire (SF-36), and body composition by bioelectrical impedance analysis. Results: The mean VAS difference (95% confidence interval [CI]): -2.61 (-1.94, -3.29); -2.61 (-1.82, -3.42); -1.07 (-0.49, -1.64) for Group 1, Group 2, and Group 3, respectively (p<0.001); however, there was no significant difference between the combined exercise groups. The FIQ scores decreased significantly in all exercise groups after training (p<0.05). At 12 weeks, 21 (80.8%) patients from combined groups and six (40%) patients from the stretching alone group achieved a minimal clinically significant difference defined as a 14% change in baseline FIQ scores (p=0.008). Other outcome parameters did not differ significantly among the groups. Conclusion: Supervised aerobics/muscle strengthening combined with stretching exercises reduced pain, and FM severity more than a home stretching exercise alone.

AIM: To identify physical, cognitive, and metabolic factors affecting gait speed in patients with type-2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) without neuropathy. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled 71 diabetic patients without neuropathy (mean age 55.87±7.74 years, 85.9% women). Neuropathy status was assessed with Douleur Neuropathique 4. We used a cut-off point for gait speed of 1 m/s to classify the participants into two groups: slow walkers (SW) and average and brisk walkers (ABW). The groups were compared in terms of age, sex, body mass index (BMI), hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c), fasting glucose, systolic blood pressure, maximal aerobic capacity (VO2 max), percentage of muscle mass, percentage of lower extremity muscle mass, Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score, and years of education. RESULTS: Compared with the ABW group, the SW group had significantly lower VO2 max (14.49±2.95 vs 16.25±2.94 mL/kg/min) and MMSE score (25.01±3.21 vs 27.35±1.97), fewer years of education, and these patients were more frequently women (P<0.05). In the multivariate regression models, the combination of VO2 max, sex, and MMSE score explained only 23.5% of gait speed (P<0.001). MMSE score and VO2max independently determined gait speed after adjustment for age, BMI, HbA1c, fasting glucose, systolic blood pressure, percent of muscle mass, percent of lower extremity muscle mass, and years of education. CONCLUSION: In diabetic patients without neuropathy, physical impairment and disability could be prevented by an improvement in aerobic capacity and cognitive function.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to compare the efficacy of the supervised pulmonary rehabilitation programs consisting of either an interval or continuous aerobic exercise program, with a home-based exercise program in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) who were overweight or obese. METHODS: In this randomized controlled study, 72 overweight and obese patients diagnosed as having COPD were randomly assigned to 3 groups. Group 1 received an interval-type (IT) aerobic exercise program, group 2 received a continuous-type (CT) aerobic exercise program (both groups performed home exercises as well) and group 3 was only given a home-based exercise (HE) program. For the evaluation of patients, anthropometric measures, cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPX), 6-min walk test (6MWT), modified-Borg dyspnea and leg fatigue scores, St George's Respiratory Questionnaire, and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used. RESULTS: Both IT and CT groups showed significant improvement on CPX parameters, 6MWT distances, mental health, and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) compared with the HE group in overweight and obese patients with COPD (P < .001). Moreover, the IT group demonstrated a significant decrease in the modified-Borg dyspnea and leg fatigue during the CPX compared with both CT and HE groups (P < .001). Furthermore, the Borg dyspnea and leg fatigue during training were lower in the IT group than in the CT group (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS: An interval or continuous aerobic exercise program added onto a home-based exercise program improved exercise capacity and HRQoL, and reduced anxiety and depression levels in overweight and obese patients with COPD.

AIM: This study was designed to assess the effect of patient education on the knowledge of safety and awareness about living with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) within the context of phase I cardiac rehabilitation. METHODS: The study was conducted with 28 newly implanted CIED patients who were included in "education group (EG)". Patients were questioned with a survey about living with CIEDs and electromagnetic interference (EMI) before and 1 month after an extensive constructed interview. Ninety-three patients who had been living with CIEDs were included in the "without education group (woEG)". RESULTS: Patients in EG had improved awareness on topics related to physical and daily life activities including work, driving, sports and sexual activities, EMI of household items, harmful equipment, and some of the medical devices in the hospital setting (p<0.05). Patients in EG gave significantly different percent of correct answers for doing exercise or sports, using the arm on the side of CIEDs, EMI of some of the household appliances, medical devices, and all of the harmful equipment compared to woEG (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: It was demonstrated that a constructed education interview on safety of CIEDs and living with these devices within the context of phase I cardiac rehabilitation is important for improving the awareness of patients significantly. Thus, patients might achieve a faster adaptation to daily life and decrease disinformation and misperceptions and thus promote the quality of life after the device implantation.

We aim to draw attention to occult, atraumatic fractures of the odontoid process in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to underline difficulties encountered during clinical and radiological diagnosis. A forty-seven years old man with RA for 4 years had occipital pain for 1 year without any history of trauma. Later, he developed weakness in the upper extremities, but he did not realize weakness in the lower extremities due to deformities. Contrast magnetic resonance imaging revealed a linear fracture of odontiod process and myelopathy. Cervical computed tomography scan revealed an old fracture border with separated and almost disappeared remnant of the tip of the odontoid without free particles in the cord. It was impossible to evaluate atlantoaxial and vertical subluxations with craniometric measurements due to destruction of the tip of odontoid. Following occipitocervical fusion and decompression and a rehabilitation program, his muscle strength improved; however, functional myelopathy stage did not change. Atraumatic fractures of the odontoid process may be more common than reported and may cause compression of the spinal cord or brain stem. Surgery is the treatment of choice but functional recovery is limited once neuronal damage has occurred. Erosion of the critical landmarks makes it difficult to diagnose and follow up atlantoaxial subluxation and/or vertical subluxation, therefore clinicians should consider radiographical follow-ups during the course of the disease.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to investigate the most important predictor isokinetic muscle strength determined by different angular velocities and contraction types (i.e. concentric and eccentric) for selected anaerobic power tests in volleyball players. METHODS: Twenty male and ten female amateur volleyball players participated in this study. Selected anaerobic power tests included Wingate Anaerobic Test (WAnT), squat jump (SJ) and countermovement jump (CMJ). Peak torque values were obtained at 60, 120, 240˚/s for concentric contraction of quadriceps (Qconc) and Hamstring (Hconc) and at 60˚/s for eccentric contraction of quadriceps (Qecc) and Hconc. RESULTS: Moderate to good correlations (r:0.409 to r:0.887) were found between anaerobic tests and isokinetic data including peak torque and total work of both Hconc and Qconc at 60, 120, 240°/s and Qecc at 60°/s (P<0.05). Qconc measured at each of 60, 120, 240°/s was found to be the only significant predictor for anaerobic tests in linear regression models (P<0.05). Correlation coefficient s for Qconc increased with increasing velocity for each of the anaerobic tests. Correlation coefficient of Qconc was highest for CMJ followed by SJ and WAnT at the same angular velocity. As a distinctive feature, both Qecc and Hconc at 60˚/s were significantly predictors for CMJ and SJ. CONCLUSIONS: Qconc peak torque was the single significant predictor for WAnT, SJ and CMJ and strength of the relation increases with increasing angular velocity. However, both Qecc and Hconc were significant indicators for CMJ and SJ. Training with higher isokinetic angular velocities and with eccentric contraction is desirable in a training program that has a goal of improving anaerobic performance in volleyball players.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of mud compress (MC) therapy compared to hot pack (HP) therapy on cartilage destruction and subchondral bone alterations detected by urine levels of C telopeptide fragment of collagen type-II (uCTX-II) in patients with knee osteoarthritis (OA). METHODS: Fifty-nine patients between 49-74 years of age with bilateral knee OA divided into 2 groups. Twenty-five patients (16 females, 9 males) and 34 patients (22 females, 13 males) were given HP versus local natural organic and mineral-rich MC therapy respectively for 2 weeks as a total of 12 sessions. uCTX-II, Visual Analog Scale (VAS), 15 m walking time, Western Ontario and McMaster Universities multifunctional (WOMAC) index were measured at baseline, after-treatment and 3 months after treatment. RESULTS: uCTX-II level did not show any difference between the two groups, however it decreased significantly in MC and HP groups 3 months after treatment (p< 0.017). WOMAC stiffness sore was significantly lower in MC group 3 months after treatment (p< 0.05). Both MC and HP therapies lowered VAS, WOMAC total and subscores significantly up to 3 months (p< 0.017). CONCLUSIONS: HP and MC therapies for OA of knee are not superior to one another with respect to the level of uCTX-II. MC may probably decrease the ongoing cartilage destruction and related subchonral bone interactions earlier compared to HP treatment in patients with knee OA as evidenced by decreased uCTX-II levels after-treatment.

The aim of this study is to investigate the presence of limitations in the shoulder range of motion (ROM) or the loss of upper extremity function on the affected side in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) with respect to the implantation time. Forty-nine patients (30 men and 19 women), mean age 64.84±11.18 years, who had been living with a CIED for less than 3 months were included in the short-term recipient (STR) group and 127 patients (85 men and 42 women), mean age 64.91±14.70 years, and with the device for longer than 3 months were included in the long-term recipients group. Shoulder ROMs were measured using a digital goniometer. The other arm was used as the control. The Constant-Murler Score, Shoulder Pain Disability Index, and Shoulder Disability Questionnaire were used to assess the functional status. Limitations of ROM for flexion, abduction, and internal rotation were found to be significantly lower in the arm on the side of CIED compared with the control arm. Significant differences in shoulder flexion, abduction, and external rotation in STRs were found compared with long-term recipient (P<0.05). However, the functional comparison of groups by the Constant-Murler Score was not significant. A low to moderate amount of shoulder disability measured by Shoulder Pain Disability Index and Shoulder Disability Questionnaire was found in patients with CIEDs, which was more prominent in STRs (P<0.05). Pain, association of CIED with pectoral muscles, a possible subtle ongoing capsular pathology, and avoidance behaviors of patients to minimize the risk of lead dislodgement might be related to restriction of motion and function in the shoulder joint in patients with CIEDs.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of head-out hot-water immersion on the intraocular pressure (IOP) of healthy subjects and investigate whether this intervention alters cardiovascular and microcirculatory responses. METHODs: 16 male and 18 female healthy young adults were immersed in 39 degrees C water up to shoulder level for 20 minutes. Blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR) and IOP were measured pre-immersion, post-immersion and five minutes after immersion on the same day. Tono-Pen was used to measure IOP. Mean arterial blood pressure (MAP), systolic pressure rate product (S-PRP), diastolic pressure rate product (D-PRP), pulse pressure (PP), mean ocular perfusion pressure (mean-OPP), systolic ocular perfusion pressure (S-OPP) and diastolic ocular perfusion pressure (D-OPP) were calculated. RESULTS: Systolic BP (SBP), diastolic BP (DBP), MAP, IOP, S-OPP, D-OPP and mean-OPP decreased; HR increased five minutes after immersion in the pool and post-immersion out of the pool significantly, compared to pre-immersion data (p < 0.05). HR, S-PRP and D-PRP measured five minutes after immersion were significantly higher from post-immersion (p < 0.05). PP and S-OPP were significantly different five minutes after immersion compared to pre-immersion. There was no statistically significant correlation between IOP and SBP, DBP, MAP, S-PRP, D-PRP, PP, S-OPP, D-OPP, or mean-OPP (p > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Physiological hemodynamic response to single head-out hot-water immersion caused a statistically significant decrease in IOP. Preliminary results could help to clarify vascular reactions and IOP changes during hot-water immersion that might be potentially therapeutic in glaucoma patients.

OBJECTIVE: Abnormal expression of cellular adhesion molecules may be related to endothelial dysfunction, a key feature in chronic heart failure. This study compares the effects of 10-wk supervised moderate-intensity continuous aerobic exercise (CAE) and intermittent aerobic exercise (IAE) programs on markers of endothelial damage, disease severity, functional and metabolic status, and quality-of-life in chronic heart failure patients. DESIGN: Fifty-seven patients between 41 and 81 yrs with New York Heart Association class II-III chronic heart failure and with a left ventricular ejection fraction of 35%-55% were randomized into three groups: nonexercising control, CAE, and IAE, which exercised three times a week for 10 wks. Endothelial damage was assessed by serum markers of vascular cell adhesion molecule-1, serum intercellular adhesion molecule-1, and nitric oxide; disease severity was measured by left ventricular ejection fraction and N-terminal probrain natriuretic peptide; metabolic status was evaluated by body composition analysis and lipid profile levels; functional status was evaluated by cardiorespiratory exercise stress test and 6-min walking distance; quality-of-life was assessed with Left Ventricular Dysfunction-36 and Short-Form 36 questionnaires at the baseline and at the end of the 10th week. RESULTS: Significant decreases in serum vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 or serum intercellular adhesion molecule-1 in IAE and CAE groups after training were found, respectively. Resting systolic and diastolic blood pressure, peak systolic and diastolic blood pressure, 6-min walking distance, and the mental health and vitality components of Short-Form 36 improved in the CAE group, whereas left ventricular ejection fraction and 6-min walking distance improved in the IAE group compared with the control group. CONCLUSIONS: Both moderate-intensity CAE and IAE programs significantly reduced serum markers of adhesion molecules and prevented the change in VO2 in patients with chronic heart failure.

OBJECTIVE: It is unclear which exercise training protocol yields superior heart rate recovery (HRR) improvement in heart failure (HF) patients. Whether baseline HRR normality plays a role in the improvement is unknown. We hypothesized that an exercise training protocol and baseline HRR normality would be factors in altering HRR in HF patients. METHODS: In this prospective, randomized, controlled and 3 group parallel study, 41 stable HF patients were randomly assigned to 3-times-weekly training sessions for 12 weeks, consisting of i) 30 minutes of interval training (IT) (n=17, 63.7±8.8 years old) versus ii) 30 minutes of continuous training (CT) (n=13, 59.6±6.8 years old) versus iii) no training (CON) (n=11, 60.6±9.9 years old). Each patient had cardiopulmonary exercise testing before and after the training program. Maximum heart rates attained during the test and heart rates at 1 and 2 min (HRR1 and HRR2) during the recovery phase were recorded. Paired samples t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test was used for comparisons before and after training. One-way ANOVA or Kruskal-Wallis variance analysis was used for comparisons among groups. RESULTS: HRR1 was unchanged after training. HRR2 improved in the IT group after training, and post-training HRR2 values were significantly faster in the IT group than in controls. Both HRR1 and HRR2 was significantly faster, irrespective of exercise protocol in patients with abnormal baseline values after training. CONCLUSION: HRR1 did not improve after training. HRR2 improved only in the IT group. Both HRRs in patients with abnormal baseline values improved after both exercise protocols. IT might be superior to CT in improving HRR2. Baseline HRR might play a role in its response to exercise.

BACKGROUND: Acute hemorheological responses to different types of aerobic exercises have never been compared in a single study in healthy people. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to compare acute effects of high intensity intermittent exercise (HIIE) and moderate intensity continuous exercise (MICE) on hemorheological parameters, in healthy young subjects. METHODS: A total of 34 sedentary young adults (12 males, 22 females) with a mean age of 20.0 ± 2.1 years were randomly assigned to HIIE, MICE or non-exercise groups. MICE exercised at the power corresponding to 50% of heart rate reserve (HRR) continuously for 25 min. HIIE exercised at the power corresponding to 100% of HRR for 30 s followed by 30 s rest for 25 min. The non-exercise group rested. Blood samples were collected before and after exercise and studied for blood count, whole blood viscosity (WBV), plasma viscosity (PV) and red blood cell (RBC) elongation at nine different shear stresses. RESULTS: WBV, PV, RBC elongation of MICE and HIIE groups were not found to be statistically different from each other or from the non-exercise group. Compared to the non-exercise group, there was a significant increase in white blood cell (WBC) and RBC counts in the MICE group. CONCLUSIONS: Different types of aerobic exercises, namely MICE, HIIE are not different from each other in terms of hemorheological parameters immediately after exercise.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to develop a Turkish version of the painDETECT questionnaire (PD-Q) and assess its reliability and validity. METHODS: Two hundred and forty patients who were diagnosed by expert pain physicians in daily clinical practice and classified as having either neuropathic, nociceptive, or mixed pain for at least 3 months were enrolled in this study. After the usual translation process, the Turkish version of the PD-Q was administered to each participant twice with an interval of 48 hours. The Leeds Assessment of Neuropathic Symptoms and Signs (LANSS), Douleur Neuropathique en 4 questions (DN4) and a pain visual analog scale were assessed along with the PD-Q. Chronbach's α was calculated to evaluate internal consistency of the PD-Q. Intraclass correlation coefficient was calculated to examine test-retest reliability. Convergent validity was assessed by correlating the scale with LANSS and DN4. Discriminant statistics-sensitivity, specificity, Youden index, positive predictive value, negative predictive value-were also assessed. RESULTS: A total of 240 patients with chronic pain, 80 patients in each neuropathic, nociceptive, and mixed pain group, were included in this study. Mean age of the patients was 54.1 years, and majority of the patients were female (52.9%). Chronbach's α of the Turkish version of the PD-Q was 0.81. The test-retest reliability of the Turkish version of the PD-Q was determined as 0.98 for the total score and ranged from 0.86 to 0.99 for individual items. The Turkish version of the PD-Q was possitively and significantly corralated with LANSS (r 0.89, P < 0.001) and DN4 (r 0.82, P < 0.001). When the two cutoff values in the original version were used, sensitivity was found 77.5% for a cutoff value ≤19, and specificity was 82.5%. Sensitivity and specificity were 90% and 67.5%, respectively, for the other cutoff value ≤12. Scores ≤12 represents a negative predictive value = 87%, and scores 19≤ represents a positive predictive value = 82%. When mixed pain patients were included in the neuropathic pain group, discriminant values were reduced as expected. CONCLUSIONS: The Turkish version of the PD-Q is a reliable and valid scale to be used to determine neuropathic component of chronic pain in Turkish patients.
