RESUMEN

Biological surfaces are multifunctional interfaces between the organisms and their environment. Properties such as the wettability and adhesion of particles are linked to the micro- and nanostructures of their surfaces. In this study, we used plant and artificial surfaces covered with wax crystals to develop a low-cost replication technique with high resolution. The technique is applicable for fragile surface structures, as demonstrated for three-dimensional wax crystals, and is fast to prevent shrinking of the biological material by water loss during the molding process. Thermal evaporation of octacosan-1-ol has been used to create microstructured surfaces with small platelets as templates for molding. Epoxy resin as filling material provided the smallest deviations from the original surface structures and can be used for replication of nanostructures as small as 4.5 nm. Contact angle measurements of leaves and their replicas show that this technique can be used to develop biomimetic surfaces with similar wettability as in the plant surfaces.

The objective of this study was to compare and analyze three common diagnostic methods for summer eczema (SE) in horses, an allergic dermatitis caused by bites of Culicoides spp. Nine horses with a medical history of SE and nine control animals were intradermally challenged with whole body extracts (WBE) and the saliva of a native (C. nubeculosus) and exotic (C. sonorensis) Culicoides species. Blood and serum samples of the horses were examined for basophil reactivity by a histamine release test (HRT) and for Culicoides-specific serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) and G (IgG) by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The results of intradermal testing (IDT) at 30min (immediate reactivity) and 4h (late-phase reactivity) post challenge with most insect preparations revealed significant differences between horses with and without SE. Overall, the HRT showed the most accurate results with a sensitivity of 1.00 for all Culicoides preparations and specificities of 0.78 (WBE) and 1.00 (saliva). By contrast, delayed reactions of the IDT (24h), and levels of Culicoides-specific IgE and IgG in the native serum showed little or no distinction between allergic and non-allergic horses. However, the use of purified serum IgE and IgG indicated the possibility for elevated titers of insect-specific serum immunoglobulins in horses with SE. The IDT and HRT did not reveal obvious differences in onset and intensity of positive reactions for the native verses exotic Culicoides species, whereas the ELISA showed slightly higher numbers of positive reactions for serum IgG with the indigenous species. Saliva, as compared to WBE, was found to have improved sensitivity and/or specificity for the HRT and for the late-phase immune reactions as measured by the IDT. Overall, the results indicate that allergy tests utilizing effector cells (mast cells, basophils) are more accurate in diagnosing SE in horses than serological analysis by ELISA.

UNLABELLED: Patients with paraplegia caused by spinal cord injuries have to deal with the loss of the central nervous regulation of the bowel functions. The management of defaecation can take a lot of their daily time. To support the colon motility, different methods of abdominal massage are used in nursing practice. But a review of current international literature reveals, that there is still a lack of evidence for the effect of abdominal massage on defaecation. In order to prove this effect, a pilot study was conducted using a quasi-experimental design with time series and including seven patients with paraplegia caused by spinal cord injury. Data were collected over three weeks: one week before intervention, during the intervention week and one week after intervention. In the intervention week, the patients received a specific abdominal massage each morning before breakfast. Following outcome-criteria have been considered: frequency and duration of defaecation, amount and consistency of faeces as well as subjective perception of the massage and its effects. RESULTS: Some distinctive changes in the frequency and duration of defaecation could be registered over time. Most patients regarded the massage as a comfortable intervention that may have positive effects of the defaecation. Due to the pilot character of the study further research is necessary in order to validate these effects.
