RESUMEN

The allegedly unconventional superconducting phase of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (MATBG) has been predicted to possess extraordinary thermal properties, as it is formed from a highly diluted electron ensemble with a record-low carrier density (n) of ∼1011 cm-2 and electronic heat capacity (Ce) of <100kB. While these attributes position MATBG as a ground-breaking material platform for revolutionary calorimetric applications, these properties have so far not been experimentally shown. Here, we reveal the thermal properties of superconducting MATBG by monitoring its temperature dependent critical current (Ic) under continuous laser heating at 1550 nm. From the bolometric effect, we extract the temperature dependence of the electronic thermal conductance (Gth), which has a value of Gth = 0.2 pW/K at 35 mK and in the low temperature limit is consistent with a power law dependence, as expected for nodal superconductors. Our work lays the foundation for future thermal transport studies on this system.

RESUMEN

Ultra low-loss microwave materials are crucial for enhancing quantum coherence and scalability of superconducting qubits. Van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure is an attractive platform for quantum devices due to the single-crystal structure of the constituent two-dimensional (2D) layered materials and the lack of dangling bonds at their atomically sharp interfaces. However, new fabrication and characterization techniques are required to determine whether these structures can achieve low loss in the microwave regime. Here we report the fabrication of superconducting microwave resonators using NbSe2that achieve a quality factorQ> 105. This value sets an upper bound that corresponds to a resistance of⩽192µΩwhen considering the additional loss introduced by integrating NbSe2into a standard transmon circuit. This work demonstrates the compatibility of 2D layered materials with high-quality microwave quantum devices.

RESUMEN

Quantum computers can potentially achieve an exponential speedup versus classical computers on certain computational tasks, recently demonstrated in superconducting qubit processors. However, the capacitor electrodes that comprise these qubits must be large in order to avoid lossy dielectrics. This tactic hinders scaling by increasing parasitic coupling among circuit components, degrading individual qubit addressability, and limiting the spatial density of qubits. Here, we take advantage of the unique properties of van der Waals (vdW) materials to reduce the qubit area by >1000 times while preserving the capacitance while maintaining quantum coherence. Our qubits combine conventional aluminum-based Josephson junctions with parallel-plate capacitors composed of crystalline layers of superconducting niobium diselenide and insulating hexagonal boron nitride. We measure a vdW transmon T1 relaxation time of 1.06 µs, demonstrating a path to achieve high-qubit-density quantum processors with long coherence times, and the broad utility of layered heterostructures in low-loss, high-coherence quantum devices.

RESUMEN

Heat capacity is an invaluable quantity in condensed matter physics and yet has been completely inaccessible in two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals (vdW) materials, owing to their ultrafast thermal relaxation times and the lack of suitable nanoscale thermometers. Here, we demonstrate a novel thermal relaxation calorimetry scheme that allows the first measurements of the electronic heat capacity of graphene. It is enabled by combining a radio frequency Johnson noise thermometer, which can measure the electronic temperature with a sensitivity of ∼20 mK/Hz1/2, and a photomixed optical heater that modulates Te with a frequency of up to Ω = 0.2 THz. This allows record sensitive measurements of the electronic heat capacity Ce < 10 -19 J/K and the fastest measurement of electronic thermal relaxation time τe < 10 -12 s yet achieved by a calorimeter. These features advance heat capacity metrology into the realm of nanoscale and low-dimensional systems and provide an avenue for the investigation of their thermodynamic quantities.

RESUMEN

Josephson junctions are superconducting devices used as high-sensitivity magnetometers and voltage amplifiers as well as the basis of high-performance cryogenic computers and superconducting quantum computers. Although device performance can be degraded by the generation of quasiparticles formed from broken Cooper pairs, this phenomenon also opens opportunities to sensitively detect electromagnetic radiation. We demonstrate single near-infrared photon detection by coupling photons to the localized surface plasmons of a graphene-based Josephson junction. Using the photon-induced switching statistics of the current-biased device, we reveal the critical role of quasiparticles generated by the absorbed photon in the detection mechanism. The photon sensitivity will enable a high-speed, low-power optical interconnect for future superconducting computing architectures.

RESUMEN

Sensitive microwave detectors are essential in radioastronomy1, dark-matter axion searches2 and superconducting quantum information science3,4. The conventional strategy to obtain higher-sensitivity bolometry is the nanofabrication of ever smaller devices to augment the thermal response5-7. However, it is difficult to obtain efficient photon coupling and to maintain the material properties in a device with a large surface-to-volume ratio owing to surface contamination. Here we present an ultimately thin bolometric sensor based on monolayer graphene. To utilize the minute electronic specific heat and thermal conductivity of graphene, we develop a superconductor-graphene-superconductor Josephson junction8-13 bolometer embedded in a microwave resonator with a resonance frequency of 7.9 gigahertz and over 99 per cent coupling efficiency. The dependence of the Josephson switching current on the operating temperature, charge density, input power and frequency shows a noise-equivalent power of 7 × 10-19 watts per square-root hertz, which corresponds to an energy resolution of a single 32-gigahertz photon14, reaching the fundamental limit imposed by intrinsic thermal fluctuations at 0.19 kelvin. Our results establish that two-dimensional materials could enable the development of bolometers with the highest sensitivity allowed by the laws of thermodynamics.

RESUMEN

Td-WTe2 (non-centrosymmetric and orthorhombic), a type-II Weyl semimetal, is expected to have higher-order topological phases with topologically protected, helical one-dimensional hinge states when its Weyl points are annihilated. However, the detection of these hinge states is difficult due to the semimetallic behaviour of the bulk. In this study, we have spatially resolved the hinge states by analysing the magnetic field interference of the supercurrent in Nb-WTe2-Nb proximity Josephson junctions. The Josephson current along the a axis of the WTe2 crystal, but not along the b axis, showed a sharp enhancement at the edges of the junction, and the amount of enhanced Josephson current was comparable to the upper limits of a single one-dimensional helical channel. Our experimental observations suggest a higher-order topological phase in WTe2 and its corresponding anisotropic topological hinge states, in agreement with theoretical calculations. Our work paves the way for the study of hinge states in topological transition-metal dichalcogenides and analogous phases.

RESUMEN

Because of the ultralow photon energies at mid-infrared and terahertz frequencies, in these bands photodetectors are notoriously underdeveloped, and broadband single photon detectors (SPDs) are nonexistent. Advanced SPDs exploit thermal effects in nanostructured superconductors, and their performance is currently limited to the more energetic near-infrared photons due to their high electronic heat capacity. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting magic-angle bilayer graphene (MAG) device that is theoretically capable of detecting single photons of ultralow energies by utilizing its record-low heat capacity and sharp superconducting transition. We theoretically quantify its calorimetric photoresponse and estimate its detection limits. This device allows the detection of ultrabroad range single photons from the visible to sub-terahertz with a response time around 4 ns and energy resolution better than 1 THz. These attributes position MAG as an exceptional material for long-wavelength single photon sensing, which could revolutionize such disparate fields as quantum information processing and radio astronomy.

RESUMEN

Antiferromagnetically doped topological insulators (ATI) are among the candidates to host dynamical axion fields and axion polaritons, weakly interacting quasiparticles that are analogous to the dark axion, a long sought after candidate dark matter particle. Here we demonstrate that using the axion quasiparticle antiferromagnetic resonance in ATIs in conjunction with low-noise methods of detecting THz photons presents a viable route to detect axion dark matter with a mass of 0.7 to 3.5 meV, a range currently inaccessible to other dark matter detection experiments and proposals. The benefits of this method at high frequency are the tunability of the resonance with applied magnetic field, and the use of ATI samples with volumes much larger than 1 mm^{3}.

RESUMEN

High sensitivity, fast response time and strong light absorption are the most important metrics for infrared sensing and imaging. The trade-off between these characteristics remains the primary challenge in bolometry. Graphene with its unique combination of a record small electronic heat capacity and a weak electron-phonon coupling has emerged as a sensitive bolometric medium that allows for high intrinsic bandwidths1-3. Moreover, the material's light absorption can be enhanced to near unity by integration into photonic structures. Here, we introduce an integrated hot-electron bolometer based on Johnson noise readout of electrons in ultra-clean hexagonal-boron-nitride-encapsulated graphene, which is critically coupled to incident radiation through a photonic nanocavity with Q = 900. The device operates at telecom wavelengths and shows an enhanced bolometric response at charge neutrality. At 5 K, we obtain a noise equivalent power of about 10 pW Hz-1/2, a record fast thermal relaxation time, <35 ps, and an improved light absorption. However the device can operate even above 300 K with reduced sensitivity. We work out the performance mechanisms and limits of the graphene bolometer and give important insights towards the potential development of practical applications.

RESUMEN

Generic interacting many-body quantum systems are believed to behave as classical fluids on long time and length scales. Due to rapid progress in growing exceptionally pure crystals, we are now able to experimentally observe this collective motion of electrons in solid-state systems, including graphene. We present a review of recent progress in understanding the hydrodynamic limit of electronic motion in graphene, written for physicists from diverse communities. We begin by discussing the 'phase diagram' of graphene, and the inevitable presence of impurities and phonons in experimental systems. We derive hydrodynamics, both from a phenomenological perspective and using kinetic theory. We then describe how hydrodynamic electron flow is visible in electronic transport measurements. Although we focus on graphene in this review, the broader framework naturally generalizes to other materials. We assume only basic knowledge of condensed matter physics, and no prior knowledge of hydrodynamics.

RESUMEN

Coulomb interaction between two closely spaced parallel layers of conductors can generate the frictional drag effect by interlayer Coulomb scattering. Employing graphene double layers separated by few-layer hexagonal boron nitride, we investigate density tunable magneto- and Hall drag under strong magnetic fields. The observed large magnetodrag and Hall-drag signals can be related with Laudau level filling status of the drive and drag layers. We find that the sign and magnitude of the drag resistivity tensor can be quantitatively correlated to the variation of magnetoresistivity tensors in the drive and drag layers, confirming a theoretical formula for magnetodrag in the quantum Hall regime. The observed weak temperature dependence and ∼B^{2} dependence of the magnetodrag are qualitatively explained by Coulomb scattering phase-space argument.

RESUMEN

Interactions between particles in quantum many-body systems can lead to collective behavior described by hydrodynamics. One such system is the electron-hole plasma in graphene near the charge-neutrality point, which can form a strongly coupled Dirac fluid. This charge-neutral plasma of quasi-relativistic fermions is expected to exhibit a substantial enhancement of the thermal conductivity, thanks to decoupling of charge and heat currents within hydrodynamics. Employing high-sensitivity Johnson noise thermometry, we report an order of magnitude increase in the thermal conductivity and the breakdown of the Wiedemann-Franz law in the thermally populated charge-neutral plasma in graphene. This result is a signature of the Dirac fluid and constitutes direct evidence of collective motion in a quantum electronic fluid.

RESUMEN

Spintronics use the electron spin as a state variable for information processing and storage. This requires manipulation of spin ensembles for data encoding, and spin transport for information transfer. Because of the central importance of lifetime for understanding and controlling spins, mechanisms that determine this lifetime in bulk systems have been extensively studied. However, a clear understanding of few-spin systems remains challenging. Here, we report spatially resolved magnetic resonance studies of electron spin ensembles confined to a 'spin nanowire' formed by nitrogen ion implantation in diamond. We measure the spin lifetime of the ensemble--that is, its spin autocorrelation time--by monitoring the statistical fluctuations of its net moment, which is in thermal equilibrium and has no imposed polarization gradient. We find that the lifetime of the ensemble is dominated by spin transport from the ensemble into the adjacent spin reservoir that is provided by the remainder of the nanowire. This is in striking contrast to conventional spin-lattice relaxation measurements of isolated spin ensembles. Electron spin resonance spectroscopy performed on nanoscale spin ensembles by means of a novel spin manipulation protocol corroborates spin transport in strong field gradients. Our experiments, supported by microscopic Monte Carlo modelling, provide a unique insight into the intrinsic dynamics of pure spin currents needed for nanoscale devices that seek to control spins.
