RESUMEN

Black and Latinx people are disproportionately impacted by HIV, COVID-19, and other syndemic health crises with similar underlying social determinants of health. Lessons learned from the HIV pandemic and COVID-19 response have been invoked to improve health equity at the systemic level in the face of other emergent health crises. However, few have examined the potential translation of strategies between syndemics at the individual level. The current mixed-methods study examined strategies used to manage HIV during the COVID-19 pandemic and the extent to which they were helpful in managing COVID-19 vulnerability among Black and Latinx people living with HIV. Participants (n = 30) were interviewed by telephone and completed demographic, mental health, alcohol and substance use, health literacy, and clinical measures in October and November 2020 in Los Angeles County. Rapid qualitative analysis, descriptive statistics, and mixed-methods merging were used to analyze the data. Qualitative results demonstrated that participants found HIV self-management strategies translated to aspects of the COVID-19 pandemic including hygiene and social distancing and coping with a health-related stressor. Although telemedicine provided continuity of HIV care for most participants, technology access and literacy posed a potential barrier, particularly to those facing other sociodemographic marginalization (i.e., low education, disability). Findings suggest providers can encourage leveraging individual HIV self-management strategies in response to other public health crises. However, these interventions must be culturally responsive and address intersecting social determinants of health. Future research should examine mechanisms that predict individual translation of HIV management strategies to other health concerns. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMEN

Drawing on queer of color critique, this paper uses mixed methods including participant observation, interviews, visual and textual analysis, and photovoice to interrogate sex workers' queer creative practices. Building upon the larger oeuvre of sex working artists, contemporary sex working artists in Los Angeles utilizes queer creativity to thwart hegemonic readings of sex work. Performances at two activist fundraisers drew on the themes and esthetics of sex work to counter mainstream narratives about sex work and workers, and to interrupt their objectification. The cover and graphics of a sex worker zine push back against dominant narratives about sex workers and the power structures that suppress sex worker self-representation. Photovoice methodology allowed sex workers to counteract objectification by telling their own stories. In their creative products, sex workers show how "queer" is a praxis of sex and gender disruption, rather than a simple identity category signaling non-heterosexuality, challenging homonormativity in addition to heteronormativity.

The objetive in this research was to determine the effectiveness of the education about oral hygiene technics on patients with developmental disorder and their parents or carer. In the PAIPAD program ( Programa de Atencion Integral a Pacientes con Problemas del Desarrollo for its acronym in Spanish ) inside the Faculty os Dentistry at the Universidad de El Salvador. Methodology: The research type is a Prospective Longitudinal Cohort study, where two groups were evaluated in the same period of time. The study group or not exposed group that correspond to the PAIPAD and the control group or exposed group to the patients from the Hogar Padre Vito Guarato; these two groups were evaluated in the same period of time that was from September to November 2013. The results obtained with application of Relative Risk Calculator show that the patients from Hogar Padre Vito Guarato or exposed group, had 1.44 higher risk in having the dental plaque index percentage higher that the patients from the not exposed group or PAIPAD patients; from this we can conclude that the exposed group or Vito Guarato patients have higher risk of having a high percentage of dental plaque index, in addition, the plaque index from the study group and the control groups are high, so the Oral Hygiene practice must be increased as well as the reeducation and the motivation for the patients, their parents and carer; the main limiting for the study was the limited study population so the data obtained is not statiscally meaningful.
