RESUMEN

The aim of this experimental study was to investigate the protective effect of Ganoderma lucidum capsules against colistin nephrotoxicity. The study animals were separated into four groups: control, colistin (9 mg/kg), colistin-G. lucidum 50 mg/kg, and colistin-G. lucidum 100 mg/kg. In the colistin group, serum blood urea nitrogen and creatinine values were found to be higher than those of the other groups (p < 0.001). The malondialdehyde, catalase, total oxidative stress, oxidative stress index, and oxidized glutathione values in serum and kidney tissue samples were determined to be higher in the colistin group than in the other groups (p < 0.001). The total antioxidative stress, superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione values measured in the serum and kidney tissue samples were determined to be lower in the colistin group (p < 0.001). Oxidative stress is responsible for tubule damage in colistin nephrotoxicity, and when G. lucidum is used together with colistin, renal damage is reduced.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate the relations between nitric oxide (NO) and leptin levels in a cohort of untreated adult Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) patients. Between June 1, 2012, and January 1, 2013, we evaluated a total of 58 subjects including 36 OSAS patients and 22 healthy controls, both polysomnographically confirmed. Following the completion of polysomnographic evaluation, serum samples were taken at 08:00. Leptin, leptin receptor, NO2 (-) and NO3 (-) levels were analyzed by commercial ELISA kits. Data analysis was performed using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 16.0 (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA). There was no statistically significant difference between the OSAS patients and control groups with relation to the demographic parameters and body mass index (p > 0.05). Significantly higher serum leptin and plasma NO levels were found in OSAS patients compared to the controls (p < 0.001). In this study, higher leptin levels which were positively correlated with NO levels in OSAS group may indicate a possible link with increased incidence of airway pathologies in these patients.

RESUMEN

AIM: Oxidative stress (OS) and asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA) are accepted as non-classical cardiovascular risk factors in end-stage renal disease patients. To clarify the role of these factors in the atherosclerotic process, we investigated if OS and ADMA are associated with endothelial function (EF) in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients. METHODS: Fifty-two non-diabetic PD patients without known atherosclerotic disease as well as 30 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals were included. We measured serum thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS), malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced glycation end-product (AGE), pentosidine, advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), ADMA and EF as described by Celermejer et al. in all subjects. RESULTS: TBARS, MDA, AOPP, AGE, pentosidine and ADMA levels were significantly higher in PD patients than in controls (P < 0.001). Flow-mediated dilatation (FMD)% and nitrate mediated dilatation (NMD)% in PD patients were lower than in the control group (7.7 +/- 4.0% vs 11.70 +/- 5.50%, P < 0.01 and 17.6 +/- 8.3% vs 26.4 +/- 4.6%, P < 0.01). Additionally, it was found that AOPP are independently correlated with FMD% and NMD% in PD patients (beta = -463, P < 0.01 and beta = -420, P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This study shows that PD patients without known atherosclerotic disease can also be characterized by endothelial dysfunction and AOPP levels independently predict endothelial function level in PD patients.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Turkish adults have a high incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD). DESIGN: The role of lipoprotein(a) (Lp[a]) as a risk factor for CAD and its association with paraoxonase-1 (PON1) activity and lipid peroxidation indicators were evaluated in Turkish subjects living in Antalya. METHODS: Paraoxonase-1 activity, Lp(a), conjugated dienes (CD) and thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances (TBARS) levels were measured in 45 healthy controls and 72 CAD patients. RESULTS: In CAD patients, decreased PON1 activity and increased Lp(a), CD and TBARS levels were observed. Risk factors associated with CAD included TBARS, age and CD. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate an association between PON1 activity and Lp(a) level in CAD patients.
