RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Dental implant-supported prostheses have been scientifically accepted and have been a common treatment choice in the case reconstructing of partial or total tooth loss. In additon, bone grafts (alloplast, xsenograft, allograft) are frequently used in implant and sinus lift surgical procedures. AIM: The aim of this study is to investigate the bone-implant osseointegration levels of titanium implants simultaniously placed with different bone grafts. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In the study, 32 female S. Dawley rats were divided into four groups. In the control group (n = 8), turned surface implants with a 2.5 mm diameter and a 4 mm length were placed in the tibia of the rats without the use of a graft material. In the experimental groups, bone cavities were opened in the tibias of the rats and a synthetic (alloplast) graft (n = 8), human allograft (n = 8), and bovine xsenograft (n = 8) were placed simultaniously with a 2.5 mm diameter and a 4 mm length turned surface titanium implants. The cavities in the experimental groups were opened with a 4 mm diameter and a 5 mm length. After 8 weeks of recovery, all rats were sacrificed at the end of the experimental period. The implants and surrounding bone tissue were removed. The removed tissue was subjected to biomechanical analysis in order to evaluate bone-implant osseointegration and peri-implant new bone formation. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, Kruskal-Wallis test, and Mann-Whitney U-test were used in the study. Significance was evaluated at the P < 0.05 level. RESULTS: In the biomechanical analyses, it was determined that there was no statistically significant difference between the control group and the other three groups in which different graft materials were applied in terms of bone-implant osseointegration (P > 0.05). In other words, in the biomechanical analyses, no statistical difference was found between any of the groups. CONCLUSIONS: As a result of this study, it can be thought that different graft materials can be successfully used in peri-implant-guided bone regeneration and may be an alternative to autogenous grafts.

RESUMEN

Enteral-feeding refers to any nutritional method throughout the gastrointestinal tract, including oral feeding. This qualitative study examined the information, experiences, and records of neonatal nurses of enterally fed patients. The study was conducted between 05.04.2018 and 05.05.2018 with 22 nurses (73.3%) working in the neonatal intensive care clinic of Çukurova University Balcali Hospital, Adana, Turkey. The data were collected by "Observation and Interview Form" developed based on the literature. Nurses were observed, and interviews were conducted depending on their appointments. Data were collected by observing each nurse on 2 different days. In all observations; it was determined that the nurses changed the feeding set daily, regularly checked the location of the feeding tube and amount of residue, and administered medication through the feeding tube. In 22.7% of the observations, nurses did not securely fix the feeding tube, 27.2% did not write a daily date on the injector with the residual volume measured, and 31.8% did not wash the injector. All the nurses recorded the amount of feed, residual amounts, and content. At the end of the interviews, 9% of the nurses stated that they had experienced aspiration among the complications encountered during enteral feeding. During the interview, they stated that all nurses were educated about enteral nutrition, had control of whether the probe was in place before feeding, performed residual control, washed their hands before the procedure, fixed the food injector to 1 place, and allowed the food injector to flow spontaneously with negative pressure. According to the results of the interviews and observations, nurses could not reflect on their nursing practices correctly. Nurses working in neonatal intensive care units should be regularly trained to share the results of evidence-based studies on enteral nutrition.

RESUMEN

Self-realization involves the realization of one's aims, revealing his/her potential, self-satisfaction, personal accomplishment, and scientific inventions. It is important to know nurses' self-realization levels and the variables that affect it, because self-fulfillment is necessary for the personal and professional development of nurses. This study was conducted to determine the relation between self-realization and burnout levels of nurses. The study is a cross-sectional study that was conducted on 136 nurses who worked at Çukurova University, Faculty of Medicine Hospital in Adana, Turkey. The data were collected with the Personal Information Form and the "Self-realization" sub-dimension of the "Healthy Lifestyle Behaviors Scale" and the "Maslach Burnout Scale." The analyses of the data were made in the SPSS demo packet Program with percentages, averages, variance analysis, Student t test, and Mann-Whitney U test. The Ethical Board Approval and Institutional Approval were obtained for the study. The self-realization score average of the nurses was 32.93 ± 6.43. The self-realization scores of the nurses who preferred their jobs willingly were found to be higher, and their burnout levels were found to be lower. It was also determined that female nurses experienced more emotional burnout compared to male nurses. In the present study, it was determined that the personal accomplishment score averages were higher and the desensitization and emotional burnout score averages, which are among the burnout scale sub-dimensions, were lower in those who had higher self-realization scores.

RESUMEN

The lack of knowledge on health literacy affects all segments of society, particularly health workers. The objectives were to identify nursing students' means of accessing information during the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, their level of health literacy, and the factors that affect it. This cross-sectional study was conducted in Turkey among 398 nursing students of Çukurova University and Van Yüzüncü Yil University between June 1 and June 30, 2020. As a data collection tool, E-Health Literacy Scale was used, with students' characteristics and personal information form related to Internet use. These forms were converted to the online format. The survey link was sent to the students' smartphones and/or e-mails to ask them to participate. Majority of participants were Van Yüzüncü Yil University nursing students (63.8%). E-SYO score average of all students was found to be 29.42 ± 4.39 (min = 14, max = 40); it was is found be at a good level. They used the Internet as the first source of information about coronavirus disease 2019 (65.1%).Among the participants, 65.8% stated that it was important to access the health resource on the Internet and 19.1% of the participants thought that it was very important. It was found that Internet use was being used for >3 times a day (72.9%). The age, class, gender, family type, income level, high school from which they graduated from, and their working status significantly were statistically affecting their health literacy (P < .05). The health literacy scale scores were significant and higher than those who did not know the concept of health literacy, and those who perceived Internet skills well and very well than those who perceived them poorly (P < .05). Nursing students were found to have good average health literacy averages. Improving the health literacy is important for making individuals healthier.

RESUMEN

We present an 18-day old boy with bilateral cervical cutaneous defect in the retroauricular region, low-set and posteriorly rotated ears, bilateral microphtalmia and bilateral pseudocleft of the upper lip. Histopathological evaluation of cervical cutaneous defect showed ulceration on the surface and ectopic thymus tissue in the deep dermis with cortex, medulla and Hassal's corpuscles. Clinical findings led to the diagnosis of Branchio-oculo-facial syndrome, characterized by branchial defects (erythematous cutaneous defects in cervical region), ocular anomalies (microphthalmia, anophthalmia, lacrimal duct obstruction, coloboma, cataract, ptosis) and facial defects (cleft lip and/or palate, pseudocleft or abnormal philtrum). DNA sequencing showed a novel heterozygous mutation, c.731T>C (p.L244P), in TFAP2A gene confirming the diagnosis of this rare autosomal dominant developmental disorder with variable clinical findings.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Bone healing is still one of the most important problems of the oral and maxillofacial surgery procedures. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of sildenafil citrate (which is used for erectile dysfunction) on bone defect healing in an experimental animal model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 42 male Wistar-albino rats were randomly assigned to the control group (n=21) or the study group (n=21). The control group was fed on a standard laboratory diet until 12 h before surgery, whereas the study group received Sildenafil citrate via orogastric tube 10 mg/kg once a day for 30 days. Under anaesthesia, a 3 x 3 x 2 mm depth defect was made on tibia of each rat. 7 animals from each group were euthanised on postoperative days 7,15 and 30. Bone samples were taken for examination, histologically on day 7, by 3D dental tomography on day 15, and for bone strength resistance on day 30. RESULTS: Statistically significant differences were determined between the groups from the inflammatory and repair phase, with the healing process being more advanced in the Sildenafil group. CONCLUSIONS: Sildenafil citrate can be used as a supporting factor to accelerate the healing process of bone. In future comprehensive studies will need to demonstrate the Sildenafil citrate affect on bone defect healing.

RESUMEN

Situs inversus viscerum is a condition in which the organs of the chest and abdomen are arranged in a perfect mirror image reversal of the normal positioning. The condition is in about 1 in 8,500 people. Although the mechanism that causes the heart loop to go left is not fully understood, it is thought that many factors are involved. Here we report a case with balanced reciprocal translocation and situs inversus viscerum. The case was a 35 year old single person. In the imaging studies, his heart was on the right (dextrocardia), his liver was on the left, and his spleen was on the right. Cytogenetic study showed that the man carried a balanced reciprocal translocation: 46,XY, t(5;11)(q32;q24.2). He had no dysmorphism. He had chronic gastritis and chronic esophageal acid reflux.

RESUMEN

Amylin is a member of the calcitonin family of hormones cosecreted with insulin from the pancreatic beta-cells that can act as an osteoblast mitogen and as an inhibitor of bone resorption in mice and humans. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of amylin on bone formation and some egg parameters in hens. The study was performed in 60 hens aged 10 wk. Thirty hens constituting the treatment group were s.c. injected with amylin at a 75 microg/kg dose every other day. The remaining hens were used as the control group. Five birds from the treatment and control groups were slaughtered at 14, 16, 18, and 20 wk of age and serum and bone parameters were compared between the treatment and control groups. The remaining 20 hens were fed without any amylin injection until 35 wk. All hens at the end of the 35th week were slaughtered and then serum, bone, and egg parameters were assessed. In the treatment group, bone calcium levels increased, whereas serum calcium levels decreased. This dose of amylin also increased the cortical width of tibiotarsuses in hens. Eggshell thickness was found thicker in the treatment group than in the control group. Overall, the results of this study suggest that amylin may stimulate the bone and eggshell quality by increasing calcium uptake from the bloodstream and may influence the sustainability of yield in hens.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Retrospective evaluation of MRI in the diagnosis of renal masses and determination of the correlation of MRI with histology or follow-up. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 46 consecutive patients (13 female, 33 male, mean age 64.7 yrs) with suspected renal tumors were examined with a 1.5 T MR scanner using a standardized protocol (TSE T2fs, 2DGRE T1, dynam. ce3DGRE T1fs, ce2DGRE T1fs, ce3DGRE urogram). RESULTS: 142 renal lesions were found with diameters of < 2 cm up to 14 x 18 cm. A primary classification as solid and cystic lesions was performed according to MRI criteria. In 29 cases we found lesions bilaterally, in 17 patients only in one kidney, and in four cases we found multifocal renal tumors unilaterally (n = 3) or bilaterally (n = 1). In 22 patients with renal tumors, cystic lesions could be seen as well. In 19 cases these were uncomplicated cysts, and in 3 cases these were complicated cysts. 35/43 lesions were histologically proven solid vascularized tumors (29 renal cell carcinomas, 6 urothelial carcinomas), five additional masses with tumor signs in MRI appeared to be progressive during follow-up thus suggesting malignancy, and one case was a multifocal bilateral renal tumor. 3/43 lesions were initially reported as being suspected of malignancy but were proven during follow-up or histologically to be benign. Tumor thrombus was depicted in MRI in the renal vein in 5 cases, stretching into the IVC in 4 cases and proven histologically in 4 and 3 cases, respectively. Of these solid masses, 99 cystic lesions could be differentiated clearly in MRI (88 simple cysts, 11 complicated cysts) that remained unchanged during follow-up (6 - 65 months) or were proven to be cysts histologically. In 17 cases these cysts were bilateral, in 19 cases unilateral, and 33 kidneys showed multicystic changes. In characterizing renal masses, MRI showed a positive predictive value of 93 % for the diagnosis of a malignant tumor. The T-stage of histologically proven renal cell carcinomas using MRI was correct in 89 %. CONCLUSIONS: MRI is a valid modality for characterizing and staging renal masses using a suitable sequence protocol that includes dynamic ce studies. Venous tumor invasion can be depicted safely. MRI can be employed alternatively to state-of-the-art ceCT and additionally to CT in unclear cases.

RESUMEN

Early signs of brain infarction can be detected by modern CCT technology even within the first 6 h after stroke. Little is known about the prognostic significance of early infarction signs in CCT. We prospectively evaluated clinical and CCT findings of 95 consecutive patients with an acute ischemia in the territory of the middle cerebral artery. All patients were admitted to our stroke unit within 6 h after stroke. In 55 patients CCT was performed within 3 h, and in 40 cases between 3 and 6 h. In all patients the clinical findings were assessed by the Scandinavian Stroke Scale (SSS). The disability due to stroke was evaluated after 4 weeks by use of the modified Rankin Scale. We could demonstrate the following early signs of cerebral infarction: focal hypodensity (23.2%), obscuration of basal ganglia (12.6%), focal brain swelling (22.1%), hyperdense middle cerebral artery sign (HMCA; 11.5%). In 3 patients early edema led to ventricular compression, in 1 patient to midline shift. The occurrence of early infarction signs did not depend on the etiology of ischemia but was significantly associated with a severe neurological deficit at admission and an unfavourable disability status 4 weeks after stroke. Focal brain swelling and HMCA were often followed by extensive infarction lesions on the follow-up CCT. In conclusion, early signs of hemispheric brain infarction visible on CCT scans performed within 6 h after stroke are correlated with severe stroke and an unfavourable functional outcome. However, a substantial part of our patients had a benign course of the disease in spite of early CCT pathology. Decisions on therapy in individual patients therefore should not depend on early CCT findings exclusively.
