RESUMEN

The role of diabetes mellitus (DM) in the etiopathogenesis of spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (SICH) is controversial. The aim was to assess the role of DM in our SICH patients. In a hospital-based cross-section study, the occurrence of DM prior to a hemorrhagic stroke was observed in 80 SICH patients (44 males, aged 36-87 years, mean 67.1 +/- 11.9 years; 36 females, aged 56-86 years, mean 71.1 +/- 8.3 years), and in a control group (CG) of 80 age- and sex-matched patients with low back pain. All patients were treated at the Departments of Neurology and Neurosurgery, University Hospital, Olomouc, Czech Republic. Two-sample t test and Pearson's homogeneity chi(2) test were applied when assessing statistical significance. DM was found in 37.5% of SICH patients versus 22.5% of CG subjects (P < 0.05). DM occurs significantly more frequently in SICH patients in the Olomouc region of the Czech Republic when compared to the general population.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: The purpose of this article is to present an assessment of the expression levels of estrogen receptors ER-alpha and ER-beta in malicious tumors of the uterine corpus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Estrogen receptor expression levels were tested using semiquantitative immunohistochemical methods. Paraffin-embedded sections of tissue from the corpus of the uterus from 171 patients were used in the research. RESULTS: Analysis of the relation between ER-beta expression levels and the clinical grade of disease (based on FIGO classification) showed that these parameters are significantly related: p = 0.0099. There were no statistically significant relations between ER-alpha expression levels in tumors or clinical stages of tumors based on the FIGO criteria. The presence of high estrogen receptor beta expression levels is often accompanied by a low estrogen receptor alpha expression level and such arrangements allow the overt biological function of a dominant receptor. CONCLUSION: The differences in tissue distribution of both estrogen receptors could indicate their different biological roles.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Methylation of genomic DNA is one of the major mechanisms that deactivates genes and regulates their tissue-specific transcription levels. Its patterns are based on clonal inheritance that occurs in the early stages of embryogenesis. All changes in the DNA methylation levels occurring especially in the promoter region of the genes, which involve hypo- as well as hyper-methylation, lead to cell differentiation and growth disorders. Therefore it can become an impulse that initiates different pathological processes including carcinogenesis. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The purpose of this review was to present the recent knowledge concerning methylation of genomic DNA based on recent references and authors' experience. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: Genome stability disorders could be caused either by mutations, which damage the structure of the genes and have not been formerly removed, or as the consequence of an epigenetic mechanism. Methylation plays a decisive role in the activity of many genes and could be a natural weapon of an organism against the expression of foreign genetic material that degrades the original genome structure.

RESUMEN

Getting to know the most important environmental risk factors for endometrial cancer development lets us provide well programmed primary preventive activity, thus avoiding or greatly reducing environmental risk factors for diseases. This activity may lead to a reduced number of new cases of endometrial cancer. We can help women live longer and better by well programmed preventive activity even when medical knowledge has reached such a high level of development. The authors analysed environmental risk factors for endometrial cancer development based on international medical references. The aim of our work was to review the environmental risk factors for endometrial cancer development which provoke initiation of the disease, sometimes change the clinical stage of the disease and influence medical treatment.

RESUMEN

Unexplained infertility is an important problem in diagnosis and therapy in everyday gynecologist's practice. Looking for possible reasons of the unexplained infertility we studied the concentrations of selected cytokines (VEGF, TNF-alpha and IL-6) in the peritoneal fluid of women suffering from the unexplained infertility. We compared the results in the studied group with the control group and with the patients with endometriosis. Immunological disorders of the peritoneal fluid in endometriosis are thought to take part in its pathomechanism. Our results suggest that the levels of one of the main factors of endothelium proliferation (VEGF) in the peritoneal fluid from women with unexplained infertility and women with endometriosis are comparable. Concentration IL-6 and TNF-alpha in the peritoneal fluid in case of unexplained infertility and control group was lower than in the endometriosis patients.

RESUMEN

Assessment of gestational age is one of the most important aims of ultrasonography in obstetrics. As pregnancy progresses, influences of factors which makes the growth of the fetuses different, cumulates. It has been revealed that the earlier in pregnancy ultrasound examination was performed, the better precision in the assessment of gestational age was obtained. The best precision is encountered when Crown-rump length is measured between 7-9 weeks of gestation. Until the end of the half of pregnancy, biparietal measurement allows for better assessment of gestational age than the date of the last menstrual period. As pregnancy progresses the variability of the measurements increases, reaching 7 week variation at term. The aim of this study is the assessment of fetal sacral length ultrasonographic measurements in the calculation of gestational age. The investigated group consists of 453 pregnant women between 16-41 weeks of physiological gestation.

RESUMEN

The aim of this paper was the analysis of the clinical usefulness of the nomogram presented by Hansmann for the fetal weight prediction in normal, single fetus pregnancies of Wroclaw population. The authors proved, that in the group of 36 pregnant women the least difference between fetal weight evaluated before birth and the birth weight of newborn was noted in the group of babies with birth weight 2000-4000 g. In the group with birth weight below 2000 g and over 4000 g respectively, the twice to octuple evaluation error is expected.

RESUMEN

The paper presents a case of uncomplicated pregnancy in 26-years old primipara suffering from congenital arteriovenous fistula. The clinical picture of disease was manifested by presence of vaso-dilatations in lower and upper limbs and in the vulva, because of which the pregnancy was terminated by cesarean section. Puerperal and postoperative outcome was uncomplicated. In the puerperal period heparin and large-spectrum antibiotic therapy was administered. No cardiovascular or thromboembolic complications were observed. Authors are of opinion, that in face of menace, the pregnancy and labour in the women presenting arterio-vascular fistula have to be considered as situation of high obstetrical risk.

RESUMEN

Tolpa Torf Preparation (TTP) is an immunomodulating drug produced by Torf Corporation, Wroclaw and registered for human use in Poland. TTP enhances the process of tissue regeneration. Authors evaluate TTP effectiveness in the treatment of inflammatory states of the cervix, especially cervical erosions and the influence of this preparation of the macroscopic, cytological and bacteriological state of the cervix. TTP was used in 31 patients with the diagnosis of cervical erosion. All patients treated as yet were classified into 3 groups, depending on the treatment of cervical erosion used previously. TTP was administered orally in the dose of 5 mg (in 10 ml of water) daily during 10 days and locally in the form of tampons soaked with 1% TTP solution in the volume of 5 ml also during 10 days. TTP administered this way has beneficial therapeutic effects on the healing of cervical erosion accelerating the process of epithelialization and bringing normalization of the cytological picture. Especially beneficial in the treatment of cervical erosion is combined use of TTP and electrocoagulation or curettage--the healing time can be shortened by half.

RESUMEN

The preparation Salbupart POLFA was used in 40 pregnant women in the treatment of imminent premature labour. The tocolytic effect of the drug was confirmed, especially in pregnancy over 32 weeks. The observed side effects, mainly in the cardiovascular system, did not require drug withdrawal, but tended towards the necessity of using symptom-alleviating drugs such as Isoptin.
