RESUMEN

We present the case of a 68-year-old female who presented with a substantial cyclodialysis after phacoemulsification identified by anterior segment optical coherence tomography and ultrasound biomicroscopy. Gonioscopy is challenging because of its shallow anterior chamber. Due to lack of response to topical steroids and refusal by the patient for surgical treatment, topical steroids were tapered, and cycloplegic was initiated. After two weeks, the cyclodialysis cleft was closed on optical coherence tomography persisting residual subchoroidal fluid, topical treatment was mantained. Despite of this, visual acuity and hypotony were restored. Finally at 2 months visit subchoroidal fluid was reabsorbed and patient was discharged. Clinics should consider the possibility of cyclodialysis in cases of unjustified hypotony during postoperative period. In addition, we recommend performing anterior segment imaging which includes ultrasound biomicroscopy and optical coherence tomography, when the evaluation of angular structures is unfeasible. Finally, we propose medical management for severe cyclodialysis as the first option considering anti-inflammatory drugs could perpetrate the separation between scleral spur and ciliary muscle.

RESUMEN

In this work, we have analyzed the main clinical and corneal histological parameters that may be associated to the spherical equivalent (SE), age and gender of individuals with myopic refractive errors. For this purpose, 108 cornea stroma lenticules were obtained from patients subjected to ReLEx-SMILE myopia correction. Histological analyses were carried out and histochemistry and immunohistochemistry were used to quantify key histological components of the cornea stroma, including mature collagen fibers, reticular and elastic fibers, glycoproteins, proteoglycans, type-V collagen and several crystallins. Clinical and histological data were analyzed to determine their association with SE, age and gender. Results showed a significant correlation between the age range of the patients and the expression of crystallins CRY-α-A, CRY-λ1 and type-V collagen and between CRY-λ1 and corneal thickness, spherical diopters (D) and SE, although correlation between CRY-λ1 and SE was non-significant when age was controlled. Comparison of cases with low myopia and high/moderate myopia found statistical differences for D and lenticule thickness and diameter. The binary logistic regression analysis allowed us to construct a model using two clinical parameters (D and lenticule thickness). Parameters showing significant correlation with the age were the corneal radius, keratometry reading (K), OZ, CRY-α-A and type-V collagen, whereas SE, lenticule thickness, OZ, CRY-λ1 and type-V collagen showed statistically significant differences between the youngest and the oldest patients. A binary logistic regression analysis model was generated including 3 variables (D, cornea radius and OZ). No gender differences were found. The specific clinical and histological modifications found to be associated to the SE and age could be useful for a better understanding of the mechanisms involved in the genesis or progression of myopia and could establish the basement for future therapeutic options.

RESUMEN

The ^{12}C(α,γ)^{16}O reaction plays a central role in astrophysics, but its cross section at energies relevant for astrophysical applications is only poorly constrained by laboratory data. The reduced α width, γ_{11}, of the bound 1^{-} level in ^{16}O is particularly important to determine the cross section. The magnitude of γ_{11} is determined via sub-Coulomb α-transfer reactions or the ß-delayed α decay of ^{16}N, but the latter approach is presently hampered by the lack of sufficiently precise data on the ß-decay branching ratios. Here we report improved branching ratios for the bound 1^{-} level [b_{ß,11}=(5.02±0.10)×10^{-2}] and for ß-delayed α emission [b_{ßα}=(1.59±0.06)×10^{-5}]. Our value for b_{ßα} is 33% larger than previously held, leading to a substantial increase in γ_{11}. Our revised value for γ_{11} is in good agreement with the value obtained in α-transfer studies and the weighted average of the two gives a robust and precise determination of γ_{11}, which provides significantly improved constraints on the ^{12}C(α,γ) cross section in the energy range relevant to hydrostatic He burning.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of parents to estimate the weight status of preschool children attending the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) day-care centers using three different tools. A total of 100 parent-child pairs attending to all the existing IMSS day-care centers in Ensenada (n = 9) completed a questionnaire on the perception of children's weight status using verbal description, sketches, and pictures. Chi squared test and univariate logistic regression was applied to assess the difference in perception between the tools used, the factors associated with the weight status perception and to identify predictors of parental underestimation of their child's weight. The sample size was estimated for a significance level of 0.05 with statistical power of 80%. No significant differences were found in the perception of weight status using different tools. The parents' underestimation of the child's weight status ranged from 51 to 59%, this percentage jumps to 79 to 84% in overweight children and 82 to 91% in obese children. Being a young mother and having a daughter increased the risk of underestimation. Higher odds of underestimation were found in > 2BMI z-score. The high underestimation found in this study shows that the ability of parents in signaling an alert to prevent childhood obesity might be highly reduced and preventive health programs should include increasing the weight status perception.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review of papers that assess the effect of television food advertisings (TFA) in the food preferences and consumption in different age groups. METHODS: Randomized clinical trials published up to November 2010 were searched in Pubmed, Ebsco, Cochrane and Scielo. Studies were included if they assessed the effect of direct exposition to TFA over the food preferences, demand, and consumption. RESULTS: Ten studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. In the three studies conducted on preschooler children an increase in selection and demand of advertized foods was reported. All the fives studies conducted on scholar children reported negative outcomes in those children exposed to unhealthy food. An increase on food consumption was observed in two of the three studies conducted on adults. CONCLUSION: The assess studies show that in pre-school and school children the effect of advertising on food consumption was consistent, while in adults there is a trend toward an strong association of exposure food advertising and preference, consumption and demand of the food advertised.

RESUMEN

The influence of electric fields lower than the critical field in the ferroelectric phase transition in deuterated triglycine selenate has been studied by means of thermal and dielectric properties. The latent heat, specific heat and dielectric constant have been measured and compared to the theoretical expectations from the Landau theory under an electric field. A full agreement has been found on cooling experiments.

RESUMEN

Conduction calorimetry has been used to determine with high precision the latent heat and variation in heat capacity which accompany the first order [Formula: see text] phase transition in perovskites with compositions (Ca(1-x)Sr(x))TiO(3), x = 0.65, 0.68, 0.74 (CST65, CST68, CST74). In CST65 (CST68), the latent heat is dissipated/absorbed over a temperature interval of ∼11 K (∼6 K), which is centred on ∼292 K (∼258 K) during cooling and ∼302 K (∼270 K) during heating. The magnitude of the latent heat diminishes with increasing SrTiO(3) content and was not detected in CST74. Integration of the latent heat and excess heat capacity yields small excess entropies, which are consistent with the structural changes being displacive rather than order-disorder in origin. Resonant ultrasound spectroscopy measurements on the same CST65 sample as used for dielectric and calorimetric measurements through the same temperature intervals have allowed quantitative correlations to be made with the bulk modulus, shear modulus and acoustic dissipation parameter, Q(-1). The dielectric anomaly and changes in Q(-1) can be understood as being linear combinations of the properties of the separate I4/mcm and Pbcm phases in proportion to their volume fractions across the two-phase field. A change of only ∼0.5-1 GPa has been detected in the bulk modulus but the shear modulus softens by ∼5-8 GPa as the transition interval is approached from above and below. This shear mode softening presumably reflects clustering and/or phonon softening in both the I4/mcm and Pbcm structures. This pattern of structure-property relations could be typical of first order transitions in perovskites where there is no group/subgroup relationship between the high and low symmetry phases.

RESUMEN

The influence of a transverse electric field on the specific heat of triglycine sulfate (TGS) has been studied. The specific heat of TGS has been measured on heating the sample from the ferroelectric to the paraelectric phase after prolonged application of transverse electric field (i.e. perpendicular to the ferroelectric axis). It is shown that the specific heat of TGS can 'remember' the temperature T(s) at which the transverse field was previously applied.

RESUMEN

We present a research work on the diagnosis of the malabsorption syndrome in childhood. The study is based on two diagnostic tests which are: the xylose test and the histological examination of intestinal mucosa. We have tried to assess the usefulness of the determination of the blood xylose after an extra oral load of xylose, comparing the results with the morphological findings in the intestinal mucosa, making a correlation between both, in order to discern the contribution of this examination to the diagnosis of the malabsorption syndrome in childhood. We come to the following conclusions: The determination of the blood xylose after an extra oral load with a single dose is a useful test in the diagnosis of malabsorption syndromes in childhood, and gives us facts about the status of the intestinal mucosa. The abnormality of the results of this test is an important indication for an intestinal biopsy. The xylose test cannot replace the intestinal biopsy.
