RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Human milk oligosaccharides (HMOs), which are unique bioactive components in human milk, are increasingly recognized for their multifaceted roles in infant health. A deeper understanding of the nexus between HMOs and the gut-brain axis can revolutionize neonatal nutrition and neurodevelopmental strategies. METHODS: We performed a narrative review using PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar to source relevant articles. The focus was on studies detailing the influence of HMOs on the gut and brain systems, especially in neonates. Articles were subsequently synthesized based on their exploration into the effects and mechanisms of HMOs on these interconnected systems. RESULTS: HMOs significantly influence the neonatal gut-brain axis. Specific concentrations of HMO, measured 1 and 6 months after birth, would seem to agree with this hypothesis. HMOs are shown to influence gut microbiota composition and enhance neurotransmitter production, which are crucial for brain development. For instance, 2'-fucosyllactose has been demonstrated to support cognitive development by fostering beneficial gut bacteria that produce essential short-chain fatty acids. CONCLUSIONS: HMOs serve as crucial modulators of the neonatal gut-brain axis, underscoring their importance in infant nutrition and neurodevelopment. Their dual role in shaping the infant gut while influencing brain function presents them as potential game-changers in neonatal health strategies.

Purpose: Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) usually causes a mild disease in children and the most serious consequence is multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Currently, there are no data about the protective role of vaccination performed by parents on children regarding the development of MIS-C. The aim of our study is to establish whether parental vaccination is related to MIS-C and the protective value of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination performed by parents against the occurrence of MIS-C in their children. Materials and Methods: Our retrospective single center study included 124 patients aged 1 month to 18 years admitted to emergency department from April 2020 to March 2022 for coronavirus disease 2019 disease. Results: Parental vaccination was negatively correlated with the development of MIS-C: 4% of patients with both parents vaccinated developed MIS-C, while patients with no parent vaccinated to have developed MIS-C were 20%. Conclusion: Parental vaccination could be an important factor influencing the course of the disease and reduces the probability that a child would develop MIS-C by 83% if both parents vaccinated.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the epidemiology of respiratory viruses. Non-pharmaceutical interventions (NPIs) led to a dramatic reduction in respiratory infections. However, the long-term effects on respiratory virus epidemiology remain unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a comparative study on hospitalized pediatric patients with respiratory illness during two seasons: 1 October 2021 to 15 March 2022 and 1 October 2022 to 15 March 2023. We compared the type of virus, mean duration of hospitalization, and disease severity. RESULTS: In the first season, 47.1% of patients (65/138) tested positive for at least one respiratory virus, with respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) being the most frequent (23.2%). In the second season, 82.9% of patients (102/123) tested positive, with RSV and Rhinovirus being the most prevalent (28.38% and 27.03%, respectively). Other viruses, such as Influenza A/B, Metapneumovirus, and Adenovirus, also showed increased prevalence. Disease severity and mean duration of hospitalization were similar between the two seasons. CONCLUSIONS: Our study highlights increased prevalence in respiratory viruses, including RSV and Rhinovirus, following the easing of NPIs. The prevalence in respiratory viruses, including RSV and Rhinovirus, increased in the second season compared to the first one. Interestingly, RSV's peak incidence shifted from February to November. The emergence of rhinovirus as the most prevalent respiratory virus during certain months suggests viral competition and dynamic changes in viral circulation. The overall severity of respiratory infections remained relatively stable between the seasons.
