RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Ferroptosis is a new form of iron-dependent programmed cell death, characterized by intracellular iron overload and lipid peroxidation. Several studies have revealed that ferroptosis is associated with the occurrence and development of various neurodegenerative diseases (NDs). Therefore, this paper reviews the mechanism and related genes of ferroptosis, focusing on the research of antiferroptosis drugs in NDs to provide theoretical support for future experimental research and clinical application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This work focuses on ferroptosis, and the authors searched the literature on PubMed related to ferroptosis using the keywords "neurodegenerative diseases" and "neurons". All articles were from August 2022 and earlier, excluding irrelevant or retracted articles, and articles from the last five years were used as the main inclusion criteria. RESULTS: After collection and summary, it was found that ferroptosis in NDs was not only related to iron metabolism, lipid metabolism, and amino acid metabolism but also related to genes such as Nrf2, FSP1, VDACs, and p53. We also summarized drugs that inhibited ferroptosis in NDs and classified them according to their mechanism of action. CONCLUSIONS: Ferroptosis was involved in the progression of NDs through its production mechanism and related genes. Targeting ferroptosis might be a new strategy for treating NDs.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Both cancer and atherosclerosis are the main causes of morbidity and mortality in the world, and some patients even suffer from both of them. Several studies have shown an association between the pathogenesis of cancer and atherosclerosis. It has been reported that miR-126 may participate in the pathological process of cancer and atherosclerosis. Therefore, we aimed to summarize the role of miR-126 in cancer and atherosclerosis respectively, as well as a possible association between them. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this paper, "miR-126" and "microRNA-126" are used as the first group of keywords, "atheromatosis" and "atherosclerosis" are used as the second group of keywords, and "tumor" and "cancer" are used as the third group of keywords. In PubMed, the authors selected one of the first group and the second group of keywords to search the literature related to miR-126 and cancer, and one of the first group and the third group of keywords was selected to search the literature on miR-126 and atherosclerosis. All collected articles are from 2021 and before. Irrelevant, withdrawn and review articles were excluded, and the included literature was mainly in the recent five years. RESULTS: After collection and summary, miR-126 is found involved in cell apoptosis, proliferation, angiogenesis, inflammation, and other processes in both cancer and atherosclerosis by negatively targeting PI3K, VEGF, VCAM-1, EGFL7, CXCL12-CXCR4 axis, and LRP6. Moreover, we briefly review the prospects of miR-126 as a biomarker for the diagnosis and treatment of cancer and atherosclerosis in clinical applications. CONCLUSIONS: It has been demonstrated that miR-126 can influence cancer and atherosclerosis by affecting the same or different target genes. Therefore, it facilitates our understanding of the common prevention and treatment strategies of cancer and atherosclerosis by regulating the miR-126-target genes network.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the mechanism of tissue specificity of neurotropism in peripheral nerve regeneration, we investigated the biological characteristics of the nerve regeneration conditioned fluids(NRCF) on motoneuron of SD rats cultured in vitro. METHODS: Silicon chambers were sutured respectively to the distal stumps of motorial branch of femoral nerve and saphenous nerve to collect NRCF, namely MD-NRCF and SD-NRCF. The rats cortex motoneuron were divided into 4 groups and cocultured with MD-NRCF, SD-NRCF, b-FGF and serum-free medium respectively. The cultured cells were photoed under phase-contrast microscope, their longest neurites and cell-body areas were measured by cell image processing computer system. MTT automated colorimetric microassay was also adopted to quantify the activation of cultured motoneurons in each group. RESULTS: Cells of MD-NRCF group had longer neurites than those of the other three groups, and their activation was also superior to those of the other groups. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that MD-NRCF has more significantly neurite-promoting and neurobiological effects on motoneuron than SD-NRCF and b-FGF.

RESUMEN

Sixty patients with leg lymphedema from a variety of etiologies were divided into randomized two groups, matched by Grade, duration, age, sex, and cause of lymphedema. Using a double-blind format, one group received 5,6 benzo-[alpha]-pyrone (coumarin 1,2 benzopyrone, 400 mg/day) for six months; the other received a placebo. For the next six months, both groups received a standardized regimen of heat (using microwaves) coupled with compression garments. Benzopyrone produced approximately 20% reduction in the volume (p = 10(-4)) and improvement in circumferences and tonometry (p = 10(-5) and 10(-7)). Symptoms (feelings of swelling, pain, heaviness and loss of mobility) were also significantly improved (p = 0.03 to 10(-7)). During the second six months, when microwave heat therapy was added to drug therapy, the patients who had previously received the placebo showed significant improvement (p = 0.03 to 10(-9)) in signs and symptoms of lymphedema. Some, but not all, of the group that was receiving benzopyrones were also significantly improved by heat therapy (p = 0.8 to 0.002). Taking benzopyrones for 12 months plus heat treatment for six months was significantly better, for some criteria, than the placebo plus heat therapy (p = 0.7 to 0.04). On the other hand, heat plus either placebo or benzopyrone was often significantly better than either the active or inactive drug without heat (p = 0.8 to 10(-9)).

RESUMEN

The results of treating chronic lymphedema using microwave heating are described in 45 patients with postmastectomy lymphedema of the upper extremity. Forty-five patients showed a significant (p < 0.01) reduction in the amount of peripheral edema after two courses of treatment. The incidence and severity of secondary acute inflammation (erysipelas) were also sharply reduced (p < 0.01). The elasticity of the soft tissue was restored.

RESUMEN

Twenty patients with various forms of lymphedema were studied by indirect lymphography. Isovist, a new non-ionic, water-soluble, dimeric contrast media, was used for intradermal infusion. Simultaneous indirect lymphography showed characteristic patterns of lymphatics. The initial lymphatics were visualized by intradermal infusion of the newly developed isovist. However, they were not opacified with direct lymphography unless in the presence of valvular insufficiency. No systemic side-effects were observed except for a feeling of discomfort at the injection site. The results showed that indirect lymphography with intradermal infusion of Isovist is useful for demonstrating dermal lymph vessels and for the diagnosis of lymphedema.

RESUMEN

Twenty patients with various forms of lymphedema were studied by indirect lymphography. Isovist (Schering AG, Berlin) used for intradermal infusion is a new non-ionic, water-soluble, dimeric contrast media. It has following advantages: ideal iso-osmolarity, lowest physical-chemicotoxicity, and excellent tissue tolerance. Simultaneous indirect lymphography was recommended. Characteristic patterns of lymphatics were demonstrated. The newly developed Isovist allows visualization of initial lymphatics by intradermal infusion. However they are not displayed with direct lymphography unless in the presence of valvular insufficiency. It can be performed within 30 minutes. No chemical injury to lymphatics would happen so that this procedure could performed repeatedly.

RESUMEN

The results of a new method of treating chronic lymphedema with heat, using microwaves, are described in 98 patients with peripheral lymphedema. Thirteen had bilateral lymphedema and were included only to provide additional evidence of the lack of side-effects using this technique. The remaining 85 patients showed a significant (p less than .001) reduction in the amount of peripheral edema with edema reduction greater than 50% in three-fourths of the patients. The incidence and severity of secondary acute inflammation ("erysipelas") were also sharply reduced (p less than .001). The microwave method of heat application has a number of advantages over an older technique which used electrically-powered heating elements.
