Sharing Indigenous Foods Through Stories and Recipes.

Participants at the second National Gathering of the Aboriginal Nutrition Network (ANN) were encouraged to submit their favourite traditional recipes. Approximately 40 were received, and a volunteer working group contacted contributors to assist in the creation of a recipe resource with a selection of 12 recipes that included traditional ingredients to promote Indigenous foodways. All contributors were interviewed to share stories about their recipes. Each recipe was then tested, photographed, and developed into a resource handout that was disseminated to a variety of stakeholders. Afterwards, a brief survey was conducted with ANN recipients of the recipes (n = 23) to evaluate the recipe collection. When asked, "Prior to learning about this resource, was a collection of recipes using traditional foods something that you or the communities you work with were interested in?" all respondents answered yes. Nearly all found the recipes easy to follow (91%), and that they were applicable to the interests or needs of the communities they work with (83%). Preserving recipes and building opportunities for dietitians and other health professionals to contribute to traditional food recipe collections facilitates increased knowledge transfer, enhanced cross-cultural understanding, and is generally a useful tool for those working with Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

The Personalisation of Glioblastoma Treatment Using Whole Exome Sequencing: A Pilot Study.

The molecular heterogeneity of glioblastoma has been linked to differences in survival and treatment response, while the development of personalised treatments may be a novel way of combatting this disease. Here we show for the first time that low passage number cells derived from primary tumours are greater than an 86% match genetically to the tumour tissue. We used these cells to identify eight genes that could be used for the personalisation of glioblastoma treatment and discovered a number of personalised drug combinations that were significantly more effective at killing glioblastoma cells and reducing recurrence than the individual drugs as well as the control and non-personalised combinations. This pilot study demonstrates for the first time that whole exome sequencing has the potential be used to improve the treatment of glioblastoma patients by personalising treatment. This novel approach could potentially offer a new avenue for treatment for this terrible disease.

Kyphosis, a rare cause of dysphagia.

Degenerative kyphosis is mostly asymptomatic. When symptomatic, pain and humping of the back are the commonest features. Dysphagia associated with kyphosis is a rare presentation, though it is otherwise common in older people due to various reasons. We report the case of an 81-year-old kyphotic woman who presented with dysphagia. On barium swallow examination, she was found to have an acute bend in the mid-oesophagus leading to narrowing, secondary to the kyphosis.

Randomized, double-blind study of the clinical efficacy of 3 days of azithromycin compared with co-amoxiclav for the treatment of acute otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Compared with 5 days of dosing, a 3 day dosing regimen of azithromycin for treatment of acute otitis media (AOM) may improve compliance, will simplify therapy for the caregiver and, by giving the same total dose as the 5 day regimen, provide more drug when the bacterial burden is highest. METHODS: Children of 6 months-12 years were enrolled if they had had symptoms and signs of AOM for <4 weeks and tympanic membrane effusion by acoustic reflectometry. Eligible children were randomized to azithromycin 10 mg/kg/day x 3 days or co-amoxiclav 45 mg/kg/day x 10 days. The primary endpoint was clinical response at day 28. RESULTS: One hundred and eighty-eight children (mean age 3.5 years) were randomized to azithromycin and 185 to co-amoxiclav. At day 10, the clinical success rate was 153/185 (83%) in children treated with azithromycin and 159/181 (88%) in children treated with co-amoxiclav. At day 28, 134/182 (74%) of the children were cured on azithromycin compared with 124/180 (69%) on co-amoxiclav. Also at day 28, signs of AOM, such as abnormal reflectometry (45% versus 59%; P = 0.017), bulging of the eardrum (10% versus 16%; P = 0.059) and loss of tympanic membrane landmarks (11% versus 22%; P = 0.010) were seen less frequently in azithromycin- than co-amoxiclav-treated children, respectively. Adverse events related to therapy were seen in 11% of azithromycin patients compared with 20% on co-amoxiclav (P = 0.014). CONCLUSIONS: Azithromycin given over 3 days is as effective as co-amoxiclav for treatment of AOM, may result in more complete resolution of tympanic membrane disease, and is better tolerated.
