RESUMEN

The work reports a method for monitoring anthracene radical-mediated oxidation reactions using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. The formation of anthracene dimer product was well-defined using 1H-NMR and 1H-1H correlation spectroscopy (COSY). Unrestricted 3-21G/B3LYP DFT was used to estimate radical hyperfine spacing (hfs), then to identify the characteristic EPR-spin transitions of anthracene radical intermediate. A detailed investigation of an anthracene oxidation reaction and its possible reaction mechanism in concentrated sulphuric acid is conducted as a model system for polyaromatic hydrocarbons. Peak-to-peak (p2p) intensities of selected EPR-spectral lines were used to evaluate anthracene's oxidation kinetic model. The findings showed that radical intermediate formation is a unimolecular autocatalytic process, dimerization is a pseudo-zero-order reaction, and the latter is the rate-determining step with a half-life of 48 ± 2 min at 25.0 °C.

RESUMEN

The global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has rapidly increased the demand for facemasks as a measure to reduce the rapid spread of the pathogen. Throughout the pandemic, some countries such as Italy had a monthly demand of ca. 90 million facemasks. Domestic mask manufacturers are capable of manufacturing 8 million masks each week, although the demand was 40 million per week during March 2020. This dramatic increase has contributed to a spike in the generation of facemask waste. Facemasks are often manufactured with synthetic materials that are non-biodegradable, and their increased usage and improper disposal are raising environmental concerns. Consequently, there is a strong interest for developing biodegradable facemasks made with for example, renewable nanofibres. A range of natural polymer-based nanofibres has been studied for their potential to be used in air filter applications. This review article examines potential natural polymer-based nanofibres along with their filtration and antimicrobial capabilities for developing biodegradable facemask that will promote a cleaner production.

In this study, we investigated the relationship between environmental parameters (water and sediment) and benthic foraminiferal assemblages found in nearshore siliciclastic sediment in the Arabian Gulf. Nearshore marine water and sediment samples were collected from a beach on the Gulf of Bahrain located south of Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The water samples were analyzed for biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5) and other chemical analyses. The sediment samples were tested for sediment oxygen demand (SOD) and heavy metal analysis. Results showed the BOD5 levels were below the detection limit (<1 ppm), while the mean SOD value was 0.97 ± 0.08 g/m2·day. The water and sediments were unpolluted and free of eutrophic enrichment, while the sediment was anoxic. The two most common genera in the benthic foraminiferal assemblage, Ammonia and Elphidium, are typical of shallow water sandy substrates. This is the first reported comparison between SOD and benthic foraminiferal assemblages.

This work reports the synthesis of a novel thiophenol-thiophene polymer (termed KFUPM-Hg) and its suitability as an adsorbent for mercury removal from wastewater and liquid hydrocarbons. KFUPM-Hg was synthesized through a Friedel-Crafts polycondensation reaction of thiophenol and thiophene in the presence of p-formaldehyde as a linker. The crosslinked polymer structure was characterized using solid-state 13C-nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Thermogravimetric analysis was performed to assess the polymer thermal stability, which indicated that the polymer is thermally stable to over 300 °C. A series of batch adsorption studies were used to investigate the effects of different parameters (pH, temperature, concentration, and time) on the mercury removal from aqueous solution as well as from a model liquid hydrocarbon media (decane/toluene mixture). The batch adsorption studies in aqueous media showed near quantitative removal of inorganic mercury (II) at 100 ppm using the thiophenol-thiophene polymer adsorbent. Furthermore, the thiophenol-thiophene polymer demonstrated excellent removal capabilities of methylmercury in a decane/toluene hydrocarbon mixture. Mercury adsorption onto KFUPM-Hg is an exothermic reversible physical process and follows pseudo-second order adsorption kinetics. Remarkably, these removal capabilities were achieved using polymers that directly incorporated thiophenol and thiophene groups during synthesis without the use of thiol-ene post-synthesis modifications.

RESUMEN

Lowland Maya civilization flourished in the tropical region of the Yucatan peninsula and environs for more than 2500 years (~1000 BCE to 1500 CE). Known for its sophistication in writing, art, architecture, astronomy, and mathematics, Maya civilization still poses questions about the nature of its cities and surrounding populations because of its location in an inaccessible forest. In 2016, an aerial lidar survey across 2144 square kilometers of northern Guatemala mapped natural terrain and archaeological features over several distinct areas. We present results from these data, revealing interconnected urban settlement and landscapes with extensive infrastructural development. Studied through a joint international effort of interdisciplinary teams sharing protocols, this lidar survey compels a reevaluation of Maya demography, agriculture, and political economy and suggests future avenues of field research.

Limited evidence exists on the latent effects of toxicant exposure on the seawater adaptability of anadromous salmon and steelhead. It is unclear whether such an effect exists for the widely used and relatively non-toxic herbicide endothall. Coho salmon, Oncorhynchus kisutch (coho), Chinook salmon, O. tshawytscha (Chinook), and anadromous rainbow trout, O. mykiss (steelhead) were subjected to a 10-day seawater challenge following freshwater treatments [0-12 mg acid equivalent (a.e)./L at 96 h]. Mean survival resulted in 82 % (n = 225), 84 % (n = 133), 90 % (n = 73) and 59 % (n = 147) survival for 0, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12 mg a.e./L, respectively. Our results indicate a lower toxicity threshold compared with previously reported acute toxicity results, but higher compared with previous seawater challenge studies. We demonstrate the utility of the seawater challenge assay to accurately define toxic effects of pesticides on salmonids with complex life-histories.

A variety of renewable starting materials, such as sugars and polysaccharides, vegetable oils, lignin, pine resin derivatives, and proteins, have so far been investigated for the preparation of bio-based polymers. Among the various sources of bio-based feedstock, vegetable oils are one of the most widely used starting materials in the polymer industry due to their easy availability, low toxicity, and relative low cost. Another bio-based plastic of great interest is poly(lactic acid) (PLA), widely used in multiple commercial applications nowadays. There is an intrinsic expectation that bio-based polymers are also biodegradable, but in reality there is no guarantee that polymers prepared from biorenewable feedstock exhibit significant or relevant biodegradability. Biodegradability studies are therefore crucial in order to assess the long-term environmental impact of such materials. This review presents a brief overview of the different classes of bio-based polymers, with a strong focus on vegetable oil-derived resins and PLA. An entire section is dedicated to a discussion of the literature addressing the biodegradability of bio-based polymers.

RESUMEN

The bacterium Aeromonas hydrophila is an anaerobic gram-negative bacillus commonly found in natural bodies of water and can cause infection in patients who suffer water-associated trauma or in immunocompromised hosts. The authors present 5 cases of penetrating wound trauma that did not involve any aquatic environment and developed rapidly forming infections. All patients presented with severe pain, cellulitis, ascending lymphangitis, fever, and pain on range of motion of the joint near the traumatic site. Presentation of clinical symptoms mimicked that of a septic joint or of severe streptococcal infection. All patients required surgical incision and drainage, intravenous and oral antibiotics using levofloxacin or bactrim, and local wound care. Results from cultures taken intraoperatively showed only A hydrophilia in every case. Resolution of symptoms occurred rapidly after surgery, and clinical resolution was seen within 72 hours. Each patient healed uneventfully and returned to preinjury status.
