RESUMEN

We study the real-time and real-space dynamics of charge in the one-dimensional Hubbard model in the limit of high temperatures. To this end, we prepare pure initial states with sharply peaked density profiles and calculate the time evolution of these nonequilibrium states, by using numerical forward-propagation approaches to chains as long as 20 sites. For a class of typical states, we find excellent agreement with linear-response theory and unveil the existence of remarkably clean charge diffusion in the regime of strong particle-particle interactions. We additionally demonstrate that, in the half-filling sector, this diffusive behavior does not depend on certain details of our initial conditions, i.e., it occurs for five different realizations with random and nonrandom internal degrees of freedom, single and double occupation of the central site, and displacement of spin-up and spin-down particles.

RESUMEN

Since the first suggestion of the Jarzynski equality many derivations of this equality have been presented in both the classical and the quantum context. While the approaches and settings differ greatly from one another, they all appear to rely on the condition that the initial state is a thermal Gibbs state. Here, we present an investigation of work distributions in driven isolated quantum systems, starting from pure states that are close to energy eigenstates of the initial Hamiltonian. We find that, for the nonintegrable quantum ladder studied, the Jarzynski equality is fulfilled to a good accuracy.

Multiple myeloma (MM) remains an incurable malignancy due, in part, to the influence of the bone marrow microenvironment on survival and drug response. Identification of microenvironment-specific survival signaling determinants is critical for the rational design of therapy and elimination of MM. Previously, we have shown that collaborative signaling between ß1 integrin-mediated adhesion to fibronectin and interleukin-6 confers a more malignant phenotype via amplification of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) activation. Further characterization of the events modulated under these conditions with quantitative phosphotyrosine profiling identified 193 differentially phosphorylated peptides. Seventy-seven phosphorylations were upregulated upon adhesion, including PYK2/FAK2, Paxillin, CASL and p130CAS consistent with focal adhesion (FA) formation. We hypothesized that the collaborative signaling between ß1 integrin and gp130 (IL-6 beta receptor, IL-6 signal transducer) was mediated by FA formation and proline-rich tyrosine kinase 2 (PYK2) activity. Both pharmacological and molecular targeting of PYK2 attenuated the amplification of STAT3 phosphorylation under co-stimulatory conditions. Co-culture of MM cells with patient bone marrow stromal cells (BMSC) showed similar ß1 integrin-specific enhancement of PYK2 and STAT3 signaling. Molecular and pharmacological targeting of PYK2 specifically induced cell death and reduced clonogenic growth in BMSC-adherent myeloma cell lines, aldehyde dehydrogenase-positive MM cancer stem cells and patient specimens. Finally, PYK2 inhibition similarly attenuated MM progression in vivo. These data identify a novel PYK2-mediated survival pathway in MM cells and MM cancer stem cells within the context of microenvironmental cues, providing preclinical support for the use of the clinical stage FAK/PYK2 inhibitors for treatment of MM, especially in a minimal residual disease setting.

In the ongoing discussion on thermalization in closed quantum many-body systems, the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis has recently been proposed as a universal concept and has attracted considerable attention. So far this concept is, as the name states, hypothetical. The majority of attempts to overcome this hypothetical character are based on exact diagonalization, which implies for, e.g., spin systems a limitation of roughly 15 spins. In this Letter we present an approach that pushes this limit up to system sizes of roughly 35 spins, thereby going significantly beyond what is possible with exact diagonalization. A concrete application to a Heisenberg spin ladder which yields conclusive results is demonstrated.

RESUMEN

We reinterpret the microcanonical conditions in the quantum domain as constraints for the interaction of the "gas subsystem" under consideration and its environment ("container"). The time average of a purity measure is found to equal the average over the respective path in Hilbert space. We then show that for typical (degenerate or nondegenerate) thermodynamical systems almost all states within the allowed region of Hilbert space have a local von Neumann entropy S close to the maximum and a purity P close to its minimum, respectively. Typically, thermodynamical systems should obey the second law.
