Numerous studies have found that the COVID-19 epidemic and the measures to stop it have had a substantial impact on the mental health of the general population. Nevertheless, the majority of this research only looked at the variations in the degree of psychopathological symptoms in individuals before and after the first wave of the pandemic. In a sample of N = 380 preschoolers and their mothers assessed through the Symptom Check-List/90-R and of the Child Behaviour Check-List, the present study aimed at exploring psychopathological risk in mothers and their offspring's dysregulation levels before (T1), during (T2) and after (T3) the peak of COVID-19 pandemic. Our main results showed that mothers' relational distress increased from T1 to T2 and then increased again from T2 to T3. Moreover, maternal aggressiveness, hostility, and anxiety scores significantly decreased from T1 to T2 but slightly increased from T2 to T3. In children, dysregulation levels increased from T1 to T2 but decreased from T2 to T3. Children of mothers with clinical scores at the SCL-90/R showed significantly higher dysregulation problems at T1, T2 and T3 than children of mothers with scores below the clinical threshold. This study adds to previous literature in that it evaluates stability or change in maternal and offspring scores not only in the pre-pandemic period and during the first wave of the pandemic, but it also considers the subsequent months, focusing on a broad range of maternal symptoms, rather than assessing depressive and anxiety symptoms as most of previous research did.

BACKGROUND: Copy Number Variations (CNVs) have becoming very significant variants, representing a major source of genomic variation. CNVs involvement in phenotypic expression and different diseases has been widely demonstrated in humans as well as in many domestic animals. However, genome wide investigation on these structural variations is still missing in Felis catus. The present work is the first CNV mapping from a large data set of Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) data in the domestic cat, performed within the 99 Lives Consortium. RESULTS: Reads have been mapped on the reference assembly_6.2 by Maverix Biomics. CNV detection with cn.MOPS and CNVnator detected 592 CNVs. These CNVs were used to obtain 154 CNV Regions (CNVRs) with BedTools, including 62 singletons. CNVRs covered 0.26% of the total cat genome with 129 losses, 19 gains and 6 complexes. Cluster Analysis and Principal Component Analysis of the detected CNVRs showed that breeds tend to cluster together as well as cats sharing the same geographical origins. The 46 genes identified within the CNVRs were annotated. CONCLUSION: This study has improved the genomic characterization of 14 cat breeds and has provided CNVs information that can be used for studies of traits in cats. It can be considered a sound starting point for genomic CNVs identification in this species.

AIMS: To characterize the genetic and phenotypic diversity of 135 lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains isolated from Italian wines that undergone spontaneous malolactic fermentation (MLF) and propose a multiphasic selection of new Oenococcus oeni malolactic starters. METHODS AND RESULTS: One hundred and thirty-five LAB strains were isolated from 12 different wines. On the basis of 16S amplified ribosomal DNA restriction analysis (ARDRA) with three restriction enzymes and 16S rRNA gene sequencing, 120 O. oeni strains were identified. M13-based RAPD analysis was employed to investigate the molecular diversity of O. oeni population. Technological properties of different O. oeni genotypes were evaluated in synthetic medium at increasing selective pressure, such as low pH (3.5, 3.2 and 3.0) and high ethanol values (10, 11 and 13% v/v). Finally, the malolactic activity of one selected strain was assessed in wine by malolactic trial in winery. CONCLUSIONS: The research explores the genomic diversity of wine bacteria in Italian wines and characterizes their malolactic metabolism, providing an efficient strategy to select O. oeni strains with desirable malolactic performances and able to survive in conditions simulating the harsh wine environment. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This article contributes to a better understanding of microbial diversity of O. oeni population in Italian wines and reports a framework to select new potentially O. oeni starters from Italian wines during MLF.

RESUMEN

Detection of very intense short radio bursts from Neptune was possible as early as 30 days before closest approach and at least 22 days after closest approach. The bursts lay at frequencies in the range 100 to 1300 kilohertz, were narrowband and strongly polarized, and presumably originated in southern polar regions ofthe planet. Episodes of smooth emissions in the frequency range from 20 to 865 kilohertz were detected during an interval of at least 10 days around closest approach. The bursts and the smooth emissions can be described in terms of rotation in a period of 16.11 +/- 0.05 hours. The bursts came at regular intervals throughout the encounter, including episodes both before and after closest approach. The smooth emissions showed a half-cycle phase shift between the five episodes before and after closest approach. This experiment detected the foreshock of Neptune's magnetosphere and the impacts of dust at the times of ring-plane crossings and also near the time of closest approach. Finally, there is no evidence for Neptunian electrostatic discharges.
