INTRODUCTION: The study focused on the importance of the relational factor and empathy in the general satisfaction of patients for the treatment received by university dental students. To achieve this objective, a tool capable of evaluating the most humanistic dimensions (empathy, kindness, trust) in the development of dental treatment has been designed. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of the literature was carried out and, based on its findings, a questionnaire was designed to assess patient satisfaction with the dental student's empathy. It consisted of 20 questions and was completed by 80 patients. The questionnaire was subjected to a validation process using the Delphi method (content validity) and psychometric analysis (construct validity), through a principal components analysis (PCA). RESULTS: The results of the PCA showed the existence of four components that suggest grouping the 20 questions into three blocks with a sequential structure, in which the questions would describe the patient's satisfaction throughout their treatment: reception and explanation of the treatment; development and progress of treatment; and expectations and completion of treatment. In each of these blocks, satisfaction was determined by a specific humanistic dimension: communication, trust and benevolence. CONCLUSION: The validated questionnaire is an effective tool to analyse the relational factors that determine patient satisfaction in a treatment. Furthermore, the analysis of the questionnaire suggests that communication, trust and benevolence are elements that acquire singular importance throughout the care process. This analysis is essential for the acquisition of humanistic skills by future professionals and to optimize the dentist-patient relationship.

BACKGROUND: Prolonged treatment times are the main reason capable of affecting patient compliance with orthodontic treatment. OBJECTIVES: A systematic review was made to determine whether the local administration of hormones and growth factors effectively enhances orthodontic tooth movement, and to identify possible adverse effects in animal studies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Five databases (PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, Web of Science and Cochrane Library) were checked for experimental studies reporting one of the following outcomes: orthodontic tooth movement, histological outcomes and side effects. After data extraction, orthodontic tooth movement linked to adjunctive substances was analysed using forest plots. The risk of bias and the quality of evidence were determined with the SYRCLE tool and the GRADE tool, respectively. RESULTS: Twenty-four studies were included in the systematic review. On a specific dose level, epidermal growth factor + liposomes, fibroblast growth factor and prostaglandin E2  + Ca were supported by a moderate level of evidence and rated as highly effective in increasing tooth movement in animal models. Likewise, there was histological evidence of increased bone remodelling after the administration of these substances. Other compounds were supported by a low to very low level of evidence. CONCLUSIONS: Hormones and growth factors may have a relevant impact upon orthodontic tooth movement rate. In specific formulations, prostaglandin E2 , fibroblast growth factor and epidermal growth factor showed promising results.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVES: To investigate dental students' perceptions and concerns regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, their coping strategies and support resources, and their perceived stress levels. METHODS: A customized 19-item survey and the perceived stress scale (PSS) were applied to undergraduate dental students from the US, Spain, Ireland, Chile, India, and Brazil between April 10 and July 5, 2020. Linear modeling and mediation analysis were used to explore the relationships among demographics, stressors, coping mechanisms, social support, and stress RESULTS: A total of 4475 students responded to the survey. The majority (72.4%) were women, and 52.3% had no COVID-19 training at the time of the survey. The students reported that they had to accommodate to changes in patient care (96.6%) and didactic learning (95.2%) activities, while 88.5% of the respondents indicated at least one of their courses moved online. Transition to online courses went "smoothly with some troubles" for 51.8% of the respondents, and 48.3% perceived the faculty as prepared for the online transition; however, 45.9% reported feeling extremely concerned about the impact of COVID-19 on their education. The average PSS score was 21.9 of 40 (moderate stress). Multivariate models were built for participants with full data (n = 3899). Being male, having completed more dental coursework, and perceiving a smoother transition were associated with lower PSS scores; more concern about academic progress was associated with higher PSS. Faculty support mediated the relationship between a smoothness of transition and concern about academic progress and PSS scores CONCLUSION: Stress caused by the pandemic may be alleviated by smoother transition and good faculty support.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effects of abutment height, airborne-particle abrasion, and type of cement on the tensile resistance to dislodgement of cement-retained implant restorations. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three groups of 12 standardized abutments each were prepared with different heights (4 mm, 5 mm, and 6 mm) using a milling machine. Crowns were cast in cobalt-chrome using the lost-wax technique, airborne particle-abraded using 50-Μm aluminum oxide, and cleaned with acetone. Restorations were cemented using a noneugenol acrylic urethane cement, a resin-modified glass ionomer, or a zinc oxide-noneugenol cement. A 5-kg load was applied for 10 minutes. Samples were kept at 37°C and 100% humidity overnight. A tensile force was applied to the crown using a testing machine at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/minute until failure occurred. Next, the abutments were airborne particle-abraded with 50-Μm aluminum oxide, and the cementation and testing procedures were repeated. The effects of cement, abutment height, and surface treatment were evaluated statistically. RESULTS: There were significant differences among the cements. The resin-modified glass ionomer provided the greatest retention in all the tested conditions, while the zinc oxide-noneugenol cement produced the lowest retention values. Significant differences were also detected between 4-mm and 6-mm abutments, with the 6-mm abutments being more retentive. No differences were found between 4-mm and 5-mm abutments or between 5-mm and 6-mm abutments. The effect of airborne-particle abrasion was also found to be significant. A maximum increase of 90 N in retention force was observed after airborne-particle abrasion for the 5-mm abutments cemented with the acrylic urethane cement. CONCLUSIONS: Cement, airborne-particle abrasion, and abutment height can significantly influence retention of implant-supported crowns. Different parameters, including those specific to the patient, should be considered in the selection of a luting agent.
