An organ's vitality prior to transplantation can be evaluated by analysis of its mechanical properties. A new apparatus was designed to measure these properties. The organ to be tested is placed in a reservoir with saline and submitted to the load of a cylindrical element. The load is applied in a stepwise mode and results in a small local deformation of the organ. This deformation is identical to the displacement of the cylinder and is measured as a function of time. This is compared to a theoretical analysis of the deformation of a viscoelastic halfspace. This theory was used to interpret the results of experiments which were carried out on eight rabbit kidneys. The instantaneous modulus of elasticity reaches a maximum within 15 minutes, then decreases and reaches a steady state after 30 minutes of warm ischemia. The method is easy to apply and appears to be useful for the quantification of an organ's vitality and in particular recognizes the level of the organ's edema before transplantation.

A procedure for bench trials of the artificial heart (AH), that comes to determining the relationship between the AH performance and the duration of the systole with constant pressure differentials at the in- and outlets of the AH and pulse rate. The results of the AH trials by the proposed procedure are described.

The results subsequent to investigations of 3 artificial heart constructions effected on a hydrodynamic stand are reported. The values of the artificial heart resistances during the systole and diastole were determined, these being shown to stand close to one another in all of the designs under review.

The authors report two cases of acro-osteosclerosis occurring during sarcoidosis. Condensation lesions involve above all the distal and proximal phalanges of the hands. Comparison of these cases with those in the literature indicates that these particular types of bone changes in association with sarcoidosis are more common than indicated in the studies of Jüngling (occurrence estimated at 54% of subjects suffering from sarcoidosis with bone localisations). This acro-osteosclerosis is however not specific to sarcoidosis. It is seen in patients suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, Hodgkin's disease and other haematological disorders. It has also been seen in normal individuals in X-rays taken at the time of a traumatic accident.
