RESUMEN

Results of 28 surgeries for congenital ptosis after Friedenwald-Guyton's method modified by V.L. Mikheyev are analyzed. A thick woven dacron thread was used for suturing. Good results were attained in 24 cases: the pupil area was covered with the upper lid by not more than 1/5. No effect was attained in 4 cases. Cases of ineffective surgeries are analyzed. A conclusion is made that the aforesaid surgery is simple, low traumatic, and sufficiently effective. Dacron thread may be effectively used for suturing.

RESUMEN

Late results (a follow-up of 3 to 4 years) of 87 scleroplastic interventions according to Nurmamedov-Atameredova are analyzed. Scleroplasty in the authors' modification was carried out in children with progressive myopia aged 8 to 14. The technique is simple and low-traumatic. The process was stabilized in 39 (44.8%) eyes, in the rest eyes (n = 48, 55.2%) myopia still progressed after surgery with an average rate of 0.7 diopters a year; this progress was most frequent after high myopia or in children whose both parents suffered from myopia. Such scleroplasty technique is therefore not recommended for this patient population.

RESUMEN

Examinations of 1427 subjects (2848 eyes) on the Western Bank of the Jordan and in the Ghaza sector have revealed a high incidence of ophthalmic diseases, particularly of conjunctivitis, cataracts (nuclear among other ones), corneal opacities, pigmented retinal dystrophies, diabetic retinopathies, congenital conditions. Blindness resulted mostly from corneal opacities, most often developing after trachoma, and from congenital diseases of the eyes. Marriages between relatives appear to play an essential role in the development of congenital diseases of the eyes, as well as of pigmented abiotrophy of the retina.

RESUMEN

Instillations of 25, 33, or 50 percent aqueous solutions of flower honey in combs were administered to patients with developing senile cortical cataracts. 1-2 three-month courses of honey instillations into the conjunctival sac were carried out annually. The rest time the patients were administered three-month courses of vitamin drops or vicein. A total of 108 patients (202 eyes) were followed up for 2 to 15 years (7 years on an average). Visual acuity of at least 0.1 was preserved in 95.5 percent of eyes, in 55.9 percent of these it did not get worse over the course of follow-up, whereas it was preserved in but 35.3 percent of the controls.

RESUMEN

A patient with penetrating wound of the eye is described, whose wound has been contaminated with anaerobic infection. Clinical picture of anaerobic panophthalmitis has been rather typical, with the infection penetrating into soft tissues of the orbit. Evisceration of the eyeball was performed. Multiple-modality treatment was carried out. The infectious process has not progressed beyond the orbit. The diagnosis has been confirmed bacteriologically.

RESUMEN

Postoperative corneal astigmatism has been studied in 130 eyes after cryoextraction of senile cataract depending in the cataractous incision: perpendicular, step-shaped alone, step-shaped with additional scleral "cap peak", 5 x 3 mm. On discharge, most frequently (in 75% of cases) a direct kind of corneal astigmatism was observed. Astigmatism invariably decreased and became stable after 4--7 months, direct astigmatism became rarer (44%), but the number of eyes with reversed astigmatism increased (40%). The lowest degree of corneal astigmatism (1.8 +/- 16D) and consequently the highest surgical visual outcomes were recorded after a step-shaped incision.

RESUMEN

Sclera-fortifying injections have been administered to 108 patients (145 eyes) to prevent the progress of myopia. No complications have been associated with the manipulation. In the postoperative period cysts of the eyeball mucosa have developed in 4 cases because of foam gel getting under the conjunctiva. Late results have been followed up in 67 eyes in periods of 22-24 mos postoperation. Myopia has stabilized in 61% of cases, its progress has been inhibited in 21%. No positive effect has been achieved in 12 (18%) eyes.

RESUMEN

A combination of scleroplasty after Pivovarov-Pristavko with revascularization of the sclera in the author's modification was used for treatment of myopic disease with expressed dystrophic changes in the eye fundus (stages III-V). For revascularization, the Tenon's capsule is used. It is introduced and sutured in the intrascleral pocket in the superexternal quadrant of the eye ball. The operation was used in 31 patients (35 eyes). No complication was recorded. Remote observations, from 1 to 3 years, over 21 patients (23 eyes) have shown stabilization of dystrophic processes and preservation or rise of visual acuity in 21 eyes (91%). The effectiveness of the operation is explained by improved blood circulation in the eye coats on account of both scleroplasty and revascularization of the sclera by the Tenon's capsule.
