RESUMEN

Organisms exhibit extensive variation in ecological niche breadth, from very narrow (specialists) to very broad (generalists). Two general paradigms have been proposed to explain this variation: (i) trade-offs between performance efficiency and breadth and (ii) the joint influence of extrinsic (environmental) and intrinsic (genomic) factors. We assembled genomic, metabolic, and ecological data from nearly all known species of the ancient fungal subphylum Saccharomycotina (1154 yeast strains from 1051 species), grown in 24 different environmental conditions, to examine niche breadth evolution. We found that large differences in the breadth of carbon utilization traits between yeasts stem from intrinsic differences in genes encoding specific metabolic pathways, but we found limited evidence for trade-offs. These comprehensive data argue that intrinsic factors shape niche breadth variation in microbes.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for a deeper understanding of the barriers to research in family medicine (FM) and to consider the perceptions and perspectives of professionals. Our study aims to provide a strategic view for research capacity building in FM. We included the perspective of family physician researchers (FPR) on the existing barriers to investigation in this context. OBJECTIVES: To understand and characterize the barriers to research in FM (personal and structural), from the perspective of Portuguese family physicians who are researchers. METHODS: A qualitative study, of phenomenological nature, was performed, through the conduction of semi-structured interviews with FPR, from 2019 to 2022. Data analysis and thematic coding were done on MAxQDA®, with inductive and deductive approaches, until data saturation was reached. RESULTS: A total of 12 family physicians/researchers were interviewed. Seven main themes were identified as barriers to research: time, professional valorization, funding, ethics committees, infrastructure, management/institutions, and participants. Each theme is divided into subthemes that make it possible to assess how a barrier can affect researchers in performing research activities. CONCLUSION: Our study highlights the identification of 7 main barriers. Structuring them into sub-themes not only improved the organization of our results but also provided robust support for the next phase, namely the application of a survey with the aim of gaining a deeper insight into the repercussions that these barriers to FPR have at a national level. This research is crucial to laying the foundations for a policy document that offers well-defined and tailored recommendations to address the barriers we have uncovered.

When Saccharomyces cerevisiae grows on mixtures of glucose and galactose, galactose utilization is repressed by glucose, and induction of the GAL gene network only occurs when glucose is exhausted. Contrary to reference GAL alleles, alternative alleles support faster growth on galactose, thus enabling distinct galactose utilization strategies maintained by balancing selection. Here, we report on new wild populations of Saccharomyces cerevisiae harboring alternative GAL versions and, for the first time, of Saccharomyces paradoxus alternative alleles. We also show that the non-functional GAL version found earlier in Saccharomyces kudriavzevii is phylogenetically related to the alternative versions, which constitutes a case of trans-specific maintenance of highly divergent alleles. Strains harboring the different GAL network variants show different levels of alleviation of glucose repression and growth proficiency on galactose. We propose that domestication involved specialization toward thriving in milk from a generalist ancestor partially adapted to galactose consumption in the plant niche.

INTRODUCTION: The qualities of primary healthcare (PHC) make it a very relevant environment for research; however, there is still work to be done to enhance the research capabilities of family physicians in healthcare units. Considering there is no ongoing review that specifically addresses this objective, the proposed goal of this scoping review is to determine the depth of the literature on the current strategies that support research capacity building among family physicians in the context of PHC. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The scoping review will include studies from PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and grey literature, published from 2008 to 2023, that address strategies to promote research capacity building among family physicians in the context of PHC. Only studies published in English, Portuguese or Spanish will be considered. All study designs, including quantitative, qualitative and mixed-methods studies, will be eligible for inclusion. The literature search will be performed from January to March of 2024 and data charting will employ a descriptive-analytical method, systematically summarising study objectives, methodologies, findings and implications. This protocol follows the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocols and the review will employ the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for scoping reviews. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: This review does not need ethical approval. Peer-reviewed publications, policy summaries, presentations at conferences and involvement with pertinent stakeholders are all part of our outreach approach.

Four yeast isolates collected from flowers from different ecosystems in Brazil, one from fruit of Nothofagus alpina in Argentina, three from flowers of Neltuma chilensis in Chile and one obtained from the proventriculus of a female bumblebee in Canada were demonstred, by analysis of the sequences of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and D1/D2 domains of the large subunit rRNA gene, to represent two novel species of the genus Starmerella. These species are described here as Starmerella gilliamiae f.a, sp. nov. (CBS 16166T; Mycobank MB 851206) and Starmerella monicapupoae f.a., sp. nov. (PYCC 8997T; Mycobank MB 851207). The results of a phylogenomic analysis using 1037 single-copy orthogroups indicated that S. gilliamiae is a member of a subclade that contains Starmerella opuntiae, Starmerella aceti and Starmerella apicola. The results also indicated that S. monicapupoae is phylogenetically related to Starmerella riodocensis. The two isolates of S. monicapupoae were obtained from flowers in Brazil and were probably vectored by insects that visit these substrates. Starmerella gilliamiae has a wide geographical distribution having been isolated in flowers from Brazil and Chile, fruit from Argentina and a bumblebee from Canada.

RESUMEN

Two novel ascomycetous yeast species of the genus Wickerhamiella are proposed based on isolates obtained in Thailand from food waste and the fruiting body of a polypore fungus, and on a combination of conventional DNA-barcode sequence analyses and whole-genome phylogenies. We focus on a particular subclade of the genus Wickerhamiella that contains species found in anthropic environments and describe Wickerhamiella limtongiae sp. nov. (DMKU-FW31-5T=PYCC 9022T=TBRC 15055T), found on food waste samples. In an adjacent clade, we describe Wickerhamiella koratensis sp. nov. (DMKU-KO16T=PYCC 8908T=TBRC 14869T), which represents the closest relative of Wickerhamiella slavikovae and was isolated from the fruiting body of Bjerkandera sp. In the subclade of W. limtongiae sp. nov., we propose that Wickerhamiella infanticola should be regarded as a synonym of Wickerhamiella sorbophila and that Wickerhamiella tropicalis should be regarded as a synonym of Wickerhamiella verensis.

In the present study, we describe Oxysomatium brevispiculum n. sp. (Ascaridida: Cosmocercidae) parasitizing Amphisbaena alba Linnaeus (Squamata: Amphisbaenidae) in the municipality of Uberlândia, Cerrado Biome, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Oxysomatium brevispiculum n. sp. differs from its congeners by having shorter spicules and by the number and arrangement of caudal papillae. The males of the new species have a precloacal unpaired papilla and can be easily distinguished from O. caucasicum in which this morphological trait is absent. Oxysomatium brevispiculum n. sp. differs from the other three species of the genus by the number and arrangement of caudal papillae, with 13 pairs + 1 unpaired precloacal papilla, arrangement 8+1:2:3, while O. brevicaudatum has 14-16 pairs +1 unpaired papilla, and 7-9+1:1:6 arrangement, O. petrolinensis has 16 pairs +1 unpaired papilla, and 8+1:1:7 arrangement, and O. dollfusi with 15-16 pairs +1 unpaired papilla, and 8-9+1:1:6 arrangement. Oxysomatium brevispiculum n. sp. is the fifth species of this genus, the second species in a Neotropical host, and the first species of this genus described in amphisbaenid hosts. In addition, the present study provides an identification key for the species of this genus.

Tropical rainforests and related biomes are found in Asia, Australia, Africa, Central and South America, Mexico, and many Pacific Islands. These biomes encompass less than 20% of Earth's terrestrial area, may contain about 50% of the planet's biodiversity, and are endangered regions vulnerable to deforestation. Tropical rainforests have a great diversity of substrates that can be colonized by yeasts. These unicellular fungi contribute to the recycling of organic matter, may serve as a food source for other organisms, or have ecological interactions that benefit or harm plants, animals, and other fungi. In this review, we summarize the most important studies of yeast biodiversity carried out in these biomes, as well as new data, and discuss the ecology of yeast genera frequently isolated from tropical forests and the potential of these microorganisms as a source of bioinnovation. We show that tropical forest biomes represent a tremendous source of new yeast species. Although many studies, most using culture-dependent methods, have already been carried out in Central America, South America, and Asia, the tropical forest biomes of Africa and Australasia remain an underexplored source of novel yeasts. We hope that this review will encourage new researchers to study yeasts in unexplored tropical forest habitats.

OBJECTIVE: Measure the frequency of anophthalmic and microphthalmic patients with craniofacial anomalies (FCAs). DESIGN: Descriptive, cross-sectional, retrospective study. SETTING: Hospital for Rehabilitation of Craniofacial Anomalies of the University of São Paulo (HRAC-USP). The medical records of patients treated at HRAC from 2000 to 2012 with a diagnosis of congenital anophthalmia or microphthalmia were examined. Patients were excluded for secondary anophthalmia, incomplete medical records, or information that could not be accessed. OUTCOME MEASURES: Frequency of anophthalmia and microphthalmia; the proportions and diagnoses of associated FCAs; impairment of ocular appendages; extracranial or facial anomalies; genetic alterations; and surgical approach. RESULTS: A total of 56 patients had anophthalmia (52.3%), 35 had microphthalmia (32.7%), and 16 patients had both (15%). Individuals with FCAs associated with microphthalmia, anophthalmia, or both totaled 74, corresponding to 69.2%. Anophthalmia was more likely than microphthalmia to be accompanied by FCAs, at 76.4% of patients ( P < 0.05). Cleft lip and palate were the main malformations associated with anophthalmia (23.64%), with microphthalmia (45%), and with both (44.44%). Reconstructive surgery was done in 63.6% of cases. The ocular attachments were compromised in 71% of cases. Extracraniofacial malformations were found in 9.3% of patients. Only 7 records contained karyotypes, and no changes directly related to anophthalmia or microphthalmia were found. CONCLUSION: Anophthalmia is more frequent than microphthalmia and is more often accompanied by FCA. Cleft lip and cleft palate are the most frequent concomitant malformations.

Organisms exhibit extensive variation in ecological niche breadth, from very narrow (specialists) to very broad (generalists). Paradigms proposed to explain this variation either invoke trade-offs between performance efficiency and breadth or underlying intrinsic or extrinsic factors. We assembled genomic (1,154 yeast strains from 1,049 species), metabolic (quantitative measures of growth of 843 species in 24 conditions), and ecological (environmental ontology of 1,088 species) data from nearly all known species of the ancient fungal subphylum Saccharomycotina to examine niche breadth evolution. We found large interspecific differences in carbon breadth stem from intrinsic differences in genes encoding specific metabolic pathways but no evidence of trade-offs and a limited role of extrinsic ecological factors. These comprehensive data argue that intrinsic factors driving microbial niche breadth variation.

Dental malocclusions are deviations from normalities due to the inadequate growth and development of the dental arch which provides functional changes to the stomatognathic system. The aim of this longitudinal study was to evaluate the electromyographic activity (EMG) the masseter and temporalis muscles, strength of the orofacial tissues and occlusal force of children with anterior open bite (n = 15) and posterior crossbite (n = 20), 7 days after the removal of the orthodontic apparatus. A fixed horizontal palatal crib was used in the treatment of anterior open bite and the fixed appliances Hyrax or MacNamara was used in the treatment of posterior crossbite. EMG of the masticatory muscles was recorded using an electromyograph with wireless sensors during mandibular tasks. Habitual chewing was assessed using the integral of the linear envelope of the electromyographic signal in the masticatory cycles. The strength of the tongue and facial muscles was measured using the Iowa Oral Pressure Instrument. T-Scan was used to analyze the force of occlusal contact. Molar bite force was measured by digital dynamometer. Significant differences (p < 0.05) were found in the EMG data of the masseter and temporalis muscles in the static and dynamic mandibular tasks. There were no significant difference in strength of orofacial tissues, occlusal contact force and molar bite force 7 days after the removal of the orthodontic apparatus. The results of this study suggest that the orthodontic treatment of anterior open bite and posterior crossbite in children promoted functional alteration in the electromyographic activity of masseter and temporalis muscles.

INTRODUCTION: Among the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development members, Portugal has the highest reported consumption of anxiolytics, hypnotics, and sedatives, of which a large proportion are benzodiazepines or related drugs. These are known to cause tolerance and dependence. Other drugs with hypnotic effect, such as antidepressants, antihistamines, antipsychotics, or anticonvulsants have been identified by some reports as alternatives to benzodiazepines for the treatment of insomnia. In this regard, the aim of this study was to characterize the consumption of benzodiazepines, non-benzodiazepine anxiolytic, hypnotic or sedative effect drugs and other drugs with the potential to be used off-label to treat insomnia, and the results concerning benzodiazepine consumption related indicators in the primary health care setting in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: From 2013 to 2020, a census, descriptive and retrospective study was conducted. The evolution of the variables total defined daily doses, defined daily doses per 1000 inhabitants per day (DHD) and relevant indicators were characterized. Data were extracted from the SIARS platform used in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley regional Health Administration. RESULTS: There was a decrease in the consumption of benzodiazepines (from 57.44 to 63.11 DHD) and an increase of non-benzodiazepines and of drugs with potential off-label use (from 6.56 to 8.56 DHD and from 14.70 to 25.95 DHD, respectively). Among non-benzodiazepines, zolpidem was the most consumed drug, also showing an increasing trend (from 4.86 to 6.96 DHD). For the group of drugs with off-label use potential, there was an increased consumption of trazodone (from 3.81 to 7.92 DHD), mirtazapine (from 3.52 to 6.48 DHD), pregabalin (from 3.15 to 4.87 DHD), quetiapine (from 2.68 to 4.59 DHD) and gabapentin (from 1.32 to 1.90 DHD), which was only the case (or, at least, more significantly) for the lower dose formulations. The median of results of the Primary Health Care setting indicator "proportion of elderly patients without prescription of sedatives, anxiolytics, and hypnotics", was 81.0 in 2015 and increased to 84.9 in 2020. For the indicator "proportion of patients without prolonged prescription of sedatives, anxiolytics, and hypnotics", the median was 93.6 in 2019 and 94.3 in 2020. CONCLUSION: There was, overall, a decreasing trend in the dispensing of benzodiazepines in the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region. Even though this data suggests a change in the therapeutic pattern for insomnia, more robust studies are needed to confirm this observation.


Introdução: Portugal é o país da Organização para a Cooperação e Desenvolvimento Económico com maior consumo de ansiolíticos, hipnóticos e sedativos, sendo uma proporção significativa constituída por benzodiazepinas ou análogos, associados a efeitos de tolerância e dependência. Por este motivo, em alternativa às benzodiazepinas para tratamento da insónia, algumas publicações identificam outros fármacos com efeito hipnótico, como antidepressivos, anti-histamínicos, antipsicóticos ou anticonvulsivantes. Assim, torna-se necessário compreender a evolução do consumo destes medicamentos, pelo que foi objetivo deste estudo avaliar a evolução da dispensa de benzodiazepinas, outros fármacos ansiolíticos, hipnóticos ou sedativos não benzodiazepínicos, fármacos com potencial uso off-label na insónia e os resultados de indicadores dos Cuidados de Saúde Primários neste âmbito na região de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. Material e Métodos: Realizou-se um estudo em base de dados, censitário e retrospetivo, no período de 2013 até 2020, avaliando-se a evolução das variáveis total de doses diárias definidas, doses diárias definidas por 1000 habitantes por dia (DHD) e dos indicadores relevantes. Os dados foram extraídos da plataforma SIARS da Administração Regional de Saúde de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. Resultados: Verificou-se uma diminuição da dispensa de benzodiazepinas (de 57,44 para 51,77 DHD) mas o aumento da dispensa de não benzodiazepinas e de fármacos com potencial uso off-label (de 6,56 para 8,56 DHD e de 14,70 para 25,92 DHD, respetivamente). O zolpidem foi o mais dispensado entre os fármacos não benzodiazepínicos, acompanhando a tendência crescente de dispensa (de 4,86 para 6,96 DHD). Do conjunto de fármacos com potencial para uso off-label verificaram-se aumentos da dispensa para a trazodona (de 3,81 para 7,92 DHD), mirtazapina (de 3,52 para 6,48 DHD), pregabalina (de 3,15 para 4,87 DHD), quetiapina (de 2,68 para 4,59 DHD) e gabapentina (de 1,32 para 1,90 DHD), mas mais significativo ou apenas verificado nas formulações com dosagem mais baixa. A mediana dos resultados do indicador "proporção de idosos sem prescrição de sedativos, ansiolíticos e hipnóticos" em 2015 foi de 81,0, tendo em 2020 aumentado para 84,9. A mediana do indicador "proporção de utentes sem prescrição prolongada de ansiolíticos, sedativos e hipnóticos" em 2019 foi de 93,6 e aumentou para 94,3 em 2020. Conclusão: Globalmente, verificou-se uma redução da dispensa de benzodiazepinas prescritas na Região de Lisboa e Vale do Tejo. Parece existir uma alteração do padrão de prescrição no tratamento da insónia. São necessários estudos mais robustos para confirmar esta observação.

Biological nitrogen fixation in soybean is enhanced when seed is treated with cobalt (Co) and molybdenum (Mo) prior to planting. In this study, our objective was to verify if Co and Mo application during the reproductive phase of the crop increases seed Co and Mo concentration without adverse effects on seed quality. Two experiments were conducted. First, we investigated foliar and soil Co and Mo application under greenhouse conditions. Next, we validated the results obtained in the first study. The treatments for both experiments consisted of Co doses combined with Mo, and a control without Co and Mo application. The foliar application was more efficient in producing enriched Co and Mo seed; meanwhile, as Co doses increased so did Co and Mo concentrations in the seed. There were no adverse effects on nutrition, development, quality, and yield of parent plants and seed when these micronutrients were applied. The seed showed higher germination, vigor, and uniformity for the development of soybean seedlings. We concluded that the application of 20 g ha-1 Co and 800 g ha-1 Mo via foliar application at the reproductive stage of soybean increased germination rate and achieved the best growth and vigor index of enriched seed.

Species is the fundamental unit to quantify biodiversity. In recent years, the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae has seen an increased number of studies related to its geographical distribution, population structure, and phenotypic diversity. However, seven additional species from the same genus have been less thoroughly studied, which has limited our understanding of the macroevolutionary events leading to the diversification of this genus over the last 20 million years. Here, we show the geographies, hosts, substrates, and phylogenetic relationships for approximately 1,800 Saccharomyces strains, covering the complete genus with unprecedented breadth and depth. We generated and analyzed complete genome sequences of 163 strains and phenotyped 128 phylogenetically diverse strains. This dataset provides insights about genetic and phenotypic diversity within and between species and populations, quantifies reticulation and incomplete lineage sorting, and demonstrates how gene flow and selection have affected traits, such as galactose metabolism. These findings elevate the genus Saccharomyces as a model to understand biodiversity and evolution in microbial eukaryotes.

Regulated exocytosis consists of the fusion between vesicles and the plasma membranes, leading to the formation of a narrow fusion pore through which secretions exit the vesicle lumen into the extracellular space. An increase in the cytosolic concentration of free Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) is considered the stimulus of this process. However, whether this mechanism can be preserved in a simplified system of membrane lawns with docked secretory vesicles, devoid of cellular components, is poorly understood. Here, we studied peptide discharge from individual secretory vesicles docked at the plasma membrane, prepared from primary endocrine pituitary cells (the lactotrophs), releasing hormone prolactin. To label secretory vesicles, we transfected lactotrophs to express the fluorescent atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP.emd), previously shown to be expressed in and released from prolactin-containing vesicles. We used stimulating solutions containing different [Ca2+] to evoke vesicle peptide discharge, which appeared similar in membrane lawns and in intact stimulated lactotrophs. All vesicles examined discharged peptides in a subquantal manner, either exhibiting a unitary or sequential time course. In the membrane lawns, the unitary vesicle peptide discharge was predominant and slightly slower than that recorded in intact cells, but with a shorter delay with respect to the stimulation onset. This study revealed directly that Ca2+ triggers peptide discharge from docked single vesicles in the membrane lawns with a half-maximal response of ∼8 µM [Ca2+], consistent with previous whole-cell patch-clamp studies in endocrine cells where the rapid component of exocytosis, interpreted to represent docked vesicles, was fully activated at <10 µM [Ca2+]. Interestingly, the sequential subquantal peptide vesicle discharge indicates that fluctuations between constricted and dilated fusion pore states are preserved in membrane lawns and that fusion pore regulation appears to be an autonomously controlled process.

Abstract The COVID-19 exacerbated violence against women. This study evaluated the possible efficacy of using advertising pieces containing the hypocrisy paradigm, the contrast principle, and moral disengagement mechanisms to prevent and reduce violence against women. We conducted two studies which included exclusively men as participants. Study 1 (n=400; M age =21.69; Me=20.00; SD=5.79) used traditional pieces on violence against women, manipulating only their moral disengagement phrases. Results suggest that the phrase combined with traditional images is either ineffective or has a rebound effect. Study 2 (n=303; M age =21.38; Me=20.00; SD=4.94) manipulated the image in Study 1, showing more effective results regarding hostility. However, physical aggression showed no significant differences. Finally, some pieces generated a rebound effect, increasing participants' self-perception of aggression. The use of advertising can act as an ally or an enemy of public policies if their effectiveness lacks proper testing.


Resumo A violência contra mulheres é um problema pandêmico agravado pela COVID-19. Esta pesquisa objetivou verificar a eficácia de peças publicitárias em reduzir a violência contra mulheres por meio do paradigma de hipocrisia, o princípio de contraste e os mecanismos de desengajamento moral. Realizaram-se dois estudos com amostras masculinas. O Estudo 1 (n=400; M idade =21,69; Me=20,00; DP=5,79) utilizou peças tradicionais, manipulando apenas as frases de desengajamento moral. O resultado sugere que a frase combinada com imagens tradicionais são ineficazes ou geram efeito rebote. O Estudo 2 (n=303; M idade =21,38; Me=20,00; DP=4,94) manipulou a imagem e os resultados indicam maior efetividade das peças em relação à hostilidade. Entretanto, a agressão física não demonstrou diferenças significativas. Finalmente, algumas peças geraram efeito rebote, levando ao incremento da autopercepção de agressividade dos participantes. O uso da publicidade pode prejudicar políticas públicas de combate a violência contra mulheres quando sua eficácia não é devidamente testada.

Esta investigación verificó el grado de eficacia de anuncios publicitarios para reducir la violencia contra la mujer utilizando el paradigma de la hipocresía, el principio de contraste y los mecanismos de desconexión moral. Se diseñaron dos estudios con muestras masculinas. El Estudio 1 (n=400; M edad =21,69; Me=20,00; DT=5,79) utilizó anuncios tradicionales, manipulando únicamente las frases de desconexión moral. El resultado sugiere que la frase combinada con imágenes tradicionales es ineficaz o tiene efecto rebote. El Estudio 2 (n=303; M edad =21,38, Me=20,00; DT=4,94) manipuló la imagen, y los resultados indican mayor eficacia respecto a la hostilidad. Pero la agresión física no mostró diferencias significativas. Finalmente, algunos anuncios generaron efecto rebote, incrementando la autopercepción de la agresividad. Así, el uso de la publicidad puede actuar como enemiga de las políticas públicas contra la violencia a la mujer cuando no se comprueba adecuadamente su eficacia.

Stroke is a neurological deficit of cerebrovascular origin that promotes physical impairments of adult individuals. The present study is aimed to demonstrate whether hemorrhagic stroke affects the maximum molar bite force. The prospective study carried in Centro Universitario Claretiano de Batatais, Brazil, determined the distribution of the sample into two groups: hemorrhagic stroke group (n=18, median age, 62.5 years) and disease-free group (n=18, median age, 62.0 years), with 10 men and 8 women in each group. Subjects were paired one-to-one (age and body mass index). The dynamometer was used to measure the maximum molar bite force (right and left). All analyses were performed with a significance level of 5% (Student's t-test). Differences were found on the right (p=0.048) and left (p=0.042) molar bite force, with lower bite force (both sides) in hemorrhagic stroke group. The study suggests that hemorrhagic stroke negatively affects the maximum molar bite force and necessitates changes in food intake to nutritious and softer consistency foods.

This case report describes the holistic performance of the multidisciplinary team in a context of approaching the moment of death of a newborn, in a cross-cultural approach, and its impact on the working group. We report the clinical case of a neonate diagnosed as severe congenital heart disease, who evolved with early surgical intervention and died on the second day of life. Considering the neonatal intensive care unit an area requiring performance of a specialized team that addresses, with a high level of complexity, in a broad way, the patient, and his family, the death of a child breaks the logic of the life cycle. The multiprofessional and family management of the newborn in question illustrates the opportunities that are still being improved in the care of mourning in the neonatal period. Demonstrating that the care process does not end at the time of death, and the period of mourning is still a challenge for the neonatal team. Even so, parents can be welcomed, with care provided in a private and secure manner, with their needs, and preserved individuality. We observe the need for professional qualification and support for mourning and the need for specific institutional policies, since the health organizations must be attentive and take care of those who care, be cared for with a different look at their emotions.

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT), defined as the exchange of genetic material other than from parent to progeny, is very common in bacteria and appears to constitute the most important mechanism contributing to enlarge a species gene pool. However, in eukaryotes, HGT is certainly much less common and some early insufficiently consubstantiated cases involving bacterial donors led some to consider that it was unlikely to occur in eukaryotes outside the host/endosymbiont relationship. More recently, plenty of reports of interdomain HGT have seen the light based on the strictest criteria, many concerning filamentous fungi and yeasts. Here, we attempt to summarize the most prominent instances of HGT reported in yeasts as well as what we have been able to learn so far concerning frequency and distribution, mechanisms, barriers, function of horizontally acquired genes, and the role of HGT in domestication.

Previous studies have revealed that Candida albicans isolates involved in chronic vulvovaginal candidosis (cVVC) phenotypically express less virulent traits than clinical isolates involved in sporadic infections. In this study, we aimed to further explore this finding by studying the behaviour of those same clinical isolates in in-vitro models of infection. Eighteen clinical Candida albicans isolates were collected from women suffering sporadic (eight isolates) or chronic infections (ten isolates). Adhesion to HeLa cells (human cervical cancer epithelial cell line) and resistance to phagocytosis by RAW 264.7 cells (murine macrophages cell line) were tested in-vitro. In addition, phenotypic expression of virulence factors related with either adhesion or resistance to phagocytosis was tested in-vitro. Results indicated that yeast isolates involved in sporadic infection adhered in a higher proportion of HeLa cells than those of chronic infections, which was related with their ability to produce biofilm (p < 0.05). The ability to evade phagocytosis was related to an elevated production of proteases (p < 0.05) by chronic isolates, while sporadic isolates' resistance to phagocytosis was related to a higher hydrophobicity of cell walls (p < 0.05). We conclude that the evasion of macrophage-mediated phagocytosis related to the production of proteases might be an important factor involved in the recurrence of vulvovaginal candidosis infection.
