RESUMEN

The three classic symptoms of carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) are pulsating exophthalmos, bruit and conjunctival chemosis. Here, we present a clinical case of isolated abducens nerve palsy due to a high-flow CCF in an 84-year-old woman, without the typical congestive orbito-ocular features. It was a diagnostic challenge because, for patients older than 50 years with cardiovascular risk factors, ischaemic mononeuropathy is the most frequent aetiology. This case illustrates the least common type of CCF that can be easily misdiagnosed. Physicians should consider fistula as a possible diagnosis in a patient with isolated abducens nerve palsy even without the classic triad.

RESUMEN

CryoEM democratization is hampered by access to costly plunge-freezing supplies. We introduce methods, called CryoCycle, for reliably blotting, vitrifying, and reusing clipped cryoEM grids. We demonstrate that vitreous ice may be produced by plunging clipped grids with purified proteins into liquid ethane and that clipped grids may be reused several times for different protein samples. Furthermore, we demonstrate the vitrification of thin areas of cells prepared on gold-coated, pre-clipped grids.

INTRODUCTION: Stroke (CVA) in young adults comprises approximately 10% of all cerebrovascular events. The information available on the recurrence of a new event in this population and particularly in Latin America is limited. Our objective was to examine the presence of stroke recurrence after having presented a stroke. METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was carried out, including patients with arterial cerebral infarctions between the ages of 18 and 55, between January 2005 and May 2020. The main outcome was the recurrence of a cerebrovascular attack. RESULTS: 138 patients were included during a median follow-up of 24 months. The 52.2% (n = 72) were male patients and 73.4% (n = 94) had an initial NIHSS score of less than 4. The 38% (n = 52) had a history of arterial hypertension and 13, 1% (n = 18) history of previous stroke / TIA. 13% (n = 18) presented recurrence during their follow-up. DISCUSSION: The recurrence of neurovascular events occurs predominantly in patients with a history of previous stroke/TIA, probably secondary to diseases that are difficult to diagnose.


Introducción: El ataque cerebral (ACV) en adultos jóvenes comprende aproximadamente el 10% de todos los eventos cerebrovasculares. La información disponible sobre la recurrencia de un nuevo evento en esta población y particularmente en Latinoamérica es limitada. Nuestro objetivo fue examinar la presencia de recurrencia de ACV luego de haber presentado un infarto cerebral. Métodos: Se realizó un estudio de cohorte retrospectivo, incluyendo pacientes con infartos cerebrales arteriales en edades comprendidas entre 18 y 55 años, entre enero de 2005 a mayo de 2020. El resultado principal fue la recurrencia de un ataque cerebrovascular. Resultados: Se incluyeron 138 pacientes durante una mediana de seguimiento de 24 meses. El 52.2% (n = 72) de sexo masculino y el 73,4% (n = 94) tuvo un NIHSS inicial menor a 4. El 38% (n = 52) tenía antecedentes de hipertensión arterial y 13,1% (n = 18) antecedentes de ACV / ataque isquémico transitorio (AIT) previo. El 13% (n = 18) presento recurrencia durante su seguimiento. Discusión: La recurrencia de los eventos neurovasculares ocurren predominantemente en pacientes con antecedentes de ACV/AIT previo, probablemente secundario a enfermedades de difícil diagnóstico.

Purpose: Adaptive optics scanning light ophthalmoscope (AOSLO) imaging offers a microscopic view of the living retina, holding promise for diagnosing and researching eye diseases like retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt's disease. The technology's clinical impact of AOSLO hinges on early detection through automated analysis tools. Methods: We introduce Cone Density Estimation (CoDE) and CoDE for Diagnosis (CoDED). CoDE is a deep density estimation model for cone counting that estimates a density function whose integral is equal to the number of cones. CoDED is an integration of CoDE with deep image classifiers for diagnosis. We use two AOSLO image datasets to train and evaluate the performance of cone density estimation and classification models for retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt's disease. Results: Bland-Altman plots show that CoDE outperforms state-of-the-art models for cone density estimation. CoDED reported an F1 score of 0.770 ± 0.04 for disease classification, outperforming traditional convolutional networks. Conclusions: CoDE shows promise in classifying the retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt's disease cases from a single AOSLO image. Our preliminary results suggest the potential role of analyzing patterns in the retinal cellular mosaic to aid in the diagnosis of genetic eye diseases. Translational Relevance: Our study explores the potential of deep density estimation models to aid in the analysis of AOSLO images. Although the initial results are encouraging, more research is needed to fully realize the potential of such methods in the treatment and study of genetic retinal pathologies.

Stiff-person syndrome is a rare neurological condition characterized by muscular rigidity of the trunk and extremities and muscle spasms triggered by sensory or emotional stimuli, which progresses towards prostration. It has a pathophysiogenic mechanism with an immunological basis, in which autoantibodies, such as antiGAD65, play a central role. Likewise, the detection of these antibodies corroborates the diagnosis in a patient with a suggestive clinical picture. Four to 6% of cases have underlying neoplasms. Treatment is based on symptomatic, immunomodulatory, and underlying disease management in paraneoplastic cases. We report a case of classic stiff person syndrome associated with thymoma and review the main characteristics of this entity.


El síndrome de persona rígida es un cuadro neurológico infrecuente caracterizado por rigidez muscular de tronco y extremidades y espasmos musculares gatillados por estímulos sensoriales o emocionales, que progresa hacia la postración. Cuenta con un mecanismo fisiopatogénico con base inmunológica, en el cual los autoanticuerpos, como el antiGAD65, cumplen un rol central. Asimismo, la detección de dichos anticuerpos corrobora el diagnóstico ante un paciente con cuadro clínico sugestivo. Un 4 a 6% de los casos tienen neoplasias subyacentes. El tratamiento se basa en el manejo sintomático, inmunomodulador y de la enfermedad de base en los casos paraneoplásicos. Reportamos un caso de síndrome de persona rígida clásico asociado a timoma y describimos las características principales de esta entidad.

Erythromelalgia is a rare syndrome characterised by recurrent erythema, heat and burning pain in the extremities. There are two types: primary (genetic) and secondary (toxic, drug-related or associated with other diseases). We report a 42-year-old woman who developed erythromelalgia after taking cyclosporine for myasthenia gravis. Although exact mechanism for this rare adverse effect is unclear, it is reversible, and so clinicians should be aware of the association . Additional use of corticosteroids could aggravate cyclosporine's toxic effects.

The analysis of the resting-state functional connectome commonly relies on graph representations. However, the graph-based approach is restricted to pairwise interactions, not suitable to capture high-order interactions, that is, more than two regions. This work investigates the existence of cycles of synchronization emerging at the individual level in the resting-state fMRI dynamic. These cycles or loops correspond to more than three regions interacting in pairs surrounding a closed space in the resting dynamic. We devised a strategy for characterizing these loops on the fMRI resting state using persistent homology, a data analysis strategy based on topology aimed to characterize high-order connectivity features robustly. This approach describes the loops exhibited at the individual level on a population of 198 healthy controls. Results suggest that these synchronization cycles emerge robustly across different connectivity scales. In addition, these high-order features seem to be supported by a particular anatomical substrate. These topological loops constitute evidence of resting-state high-order arrangements of interaction hidden on classical pairwise models. These cycles may have implications for the synchronization mechanisms commonly described in the resting state.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) replicates and evades detection using ER membranes and their associated protein machinery. Among these hijacked human proteins is selenoprotein S (selenos). This selenoprotein takes part in the protein quality control, signaling, and the regulation of cytokine secretion. While the role of selenos in the viral life cycle is not yet known, it has been reported to interact with SARS-CoV-2 nonstructural protein 7 (nsp7), a viral protein essential for the replication of the virus. We set to study whether selenos and nsp7 interact directly and if they can still bind when nsp7 is bound to the replication and transcription complex of the virus. Using biochemical assays, we show that selenos binds directly to nsp7. In addition, we found that selenos can bind to nsp7 when it is in a complex with the coronavirus's minimal replication and transcription complex, comprised of nsp7, nsp8, and the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase nsp12. In addition, through crosslinking experiments, we mapped the interaction sites of selenos and nsp7 in the replication complex and showed that the hydrophobic segment of selenos is essential for binding to nsp7. This arrangement leaves an extended helix and the intrinsically disordered segment of selenos-including the reactive selenocysteine-exposed and free to potentially recruit additional proteins to the replication and transcription complex.

Objective: to evaluate the performance statistics of average flow (Qave), voiding time (Vtime), and time to maximum flow (TQmax), in addition to maximum flow (Qmax), for diagnosis of infravesical obstruction. Methods: we reviewed urodynamic studies performed in men > 40 years. Obstruction was considered a grade 3-6 in the Schäfer nomogram. Sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (LR+), negative likelihood ratio (LR-), and the receiver operator characteristic (ROC) curve were calculated for the different components of free uroflowmetry. Results: we analyzed 432 studies. Patients with obstruction had lower values of Qmax and Qave, and higher values of Vtime and TQmax. Considering different thresholds, Qmax had sensitivity, specificity, LR + and LR- values of 12-83%, 50-97%, 1.7-4.46 and 0.32-0.9, respectively; Qave had sensitivity, specificity, LR + and LR- values of 65-95%, 21-66%, 1.22-1.94 and 0.19-0.53, respectively; Vtime had sensitivity, specificity, LR + and LR- values of 49-85%, 26-67%, 1.15-1.54, and 0.57-0.74, respectively; TQmax had a sensitivity, specificity, LR + and LR- of 36-81%, 22-72%, 1.04-1.33 and 0.85-0.87, respectively. The areas under the ROC curves for Qmax, Qave, Vtime and TQmax were 0.75 (95% CI = 0.71-0.79, p < 0.001), 0.71 (95% CI = 0.66-0.75, p < 0.001), 0.62 (95% CI = 0.57-0.67, p < 0.001) and 0.55 (95% CI = 0.5-0.6, p = 0.03), respectively. Conclusions: Qave, Vtime, and TQmax showed a statistically significant discriminatory capacity to predict infravesical obstruction, and therefore they have clinical value as a complement to the information provided by Qmax.


Objetivo: evaluar las estadísticas de desempeño del flujo promedio (Qave), el tiempo de evacuación (Vtime) y el tiempo hasta el flujo máximo (TQmax), además del flujo máximo (Qmax), para el diagnóstico de obstrucción infravesical. Métodos: revisamos urodinamias realizadas en hombres > 40 años. La obstrucción se consideró un grado 3-6 en el nomograma de Schäfer. Se calcularon la sensibilidad, la especificidad, la razón de verosimilitud positiva (LR +), la razón de verosimilitud negativa (LR-) y la curva característica operativa del receptor (ROC) para los diferentes componentes de la flujometría libre. Resultados: analizamos 443 estudios. Los pacientes con obstrucción tenían valores más bajos de Qmax y Qave, y valores más altos de Vtime y TQmax. Considerando diferentes umbrales, el Qmax tuvo valores de sensibilidad, especificidad, LR + y LR- de 12-83%, 50-97%, 1.7-4.46 y 0.32-0.9, respectivamente; Qave tuvo valores de sensibilidad, especificidad, LR + y LR- de 65-95%, 21-66%, 1.22-1.94 y 0.19-0.53, respectivamente; Vtime tuvo valores de sensibilidad, especificidad, LR + y LR- de 49-85%, 26-67%, 1.15-1.54 y 0.57-0.74, respectivamente; TQmax tuvo una sensibilidad, especificidad, LR + y LR- de 36-81%, 22-72%, 1.04-1.33 y 0.85-0.87, respectivamente. Selenoprotein S (selenos) is a small, intrinsically disordered membrane protein that is associated with various cellular functions, such as inflammatory processes, cellular stress response, protein quality control, and signaling pathways. It is primarily known for its contribution to the ER-associated degradation (ERAD) pathway, which governs the extraction of misfolded proteins or misassembled protein complexes from the ER to the cytosol for degradation by the proteasome. However, selenos's other cellular roles in signaling are equally vital, including the control of transcription factors and cytokine levels. Consequently, genetic polymorphisms of selenos are associated with increased risk for diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular diseases, while high expression levels correlate with poor prognosis in several cancers. Its inhibitory role in cytokine secretion is also exploited by viruses. Since selenos binds multiple protein complexes, however, its specific contributions to various cellular pathways and diseases have been difficult to establish. Thus, the precise cellular functions of selenos and their interconnectivity have only recently begun to emerge. This review aims to summarize recent insights into the structure, interactome, and cellular roles of selenos.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact on continence rate during 1-year follow-up of a preservation technique that included nonligation of the dorsal vascular complex and sparing of the puboprostatic ligaments and the endopelvic fascia during laparoscopic radical prostatectomy. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Information from 30 patients who underwent the preservation technique was prospectively collected and compared with data from 60 patients who underwent the nonpreservation traditional technique. A single surgeon performed all procedures. RESULTS: Demographic and preoperative characteristics were similar. The mean patient age was 59 years in both groups. All patients were stage cT1c or cT2. Operative time was significantly lower in the preservation technique group (229.6 vs. 262.7 minutes, P < .001). There were no significant differences in intraoperative bleeding, discharge hemoglobin level, blood transfusion rate, length of hospitalization, and drop in the hemoglobin level. The probability of continence recovery was significantly higher in the preservation technique group than in the traditional technique group (hazard ratio = 0.50, 95% CI = 0.31-0.81). The continence rate (0 pads/day) for the preservation technique group versus the traditional technique group at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months was, respectively, 53.3% versus 30% (P = .031), 90% versus 45% (P < .001), 90% versus 63.3% (P = .008), and 96.6% versus 78.3% (P = .024). There were no significant differences between the groups regarding potency and oncologic outcomes. CONCLUSION: Nonligation of the dorsal vascular complex and preservation of the puboprostatic ligaments and the endopelvic fascia improved urinary continence compared with the traditional nonpreservation technique, with no impact in terms of bleeding and oncologic outcomes.

Purpose: To develop an automated method based on deep learning (DL) to classify macular edema (ME) from the evaluation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) scans. Methods: A total of 4230 images were obtained from data repositories of patients attended in an ophthalmology clinic in Colombia and two free open-access databases. They were annotated with four biomarkers (BMs) as intraretinal fluid, subretinal fluid, hyperreflective foci/tissue, and drusen. Then the scans were labeled as control or ocular disease among diabetic macular edema (DME), neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD), and retinal vein occlusion (RVO) by two expert ophthalmologists. Our method was developed by following four consecutive phases: segmentation of BMs, the combination of BMs, feature extraction with convolutional neural networks to achieve binary classification for each disease, and, finally, multiclass classification of diseases and control images. Results: The accuracy of our model for nAMD was 97%, and for DME, RVO, and control were 94%, 93%, and 93%, respectively. Area under curve values were 0.99, 0.98, 0.96, and 0.97, respectively. The mean Cohen's kappa coefficient for the multiclass classification task was 0.84. Conclusions: The proposed DL model may identify OCT scans as normal and ME. In addition, it may classify its cause among three major exudative retinal diseases with high accuracy and reliability. Translational Relevance: Our DL approach can optimize the efficiency and timeliness of appropriate etiological diagnosis of ME, thus improving patient access and clinical decision making. It could be useful in places with a shortage of specialists and for readers that evaluate OCT scans remotely.

Resumen Las neoplasias epiteliales del timo (NET) son tumores infrecuentes. El manejo inicial de las mismas se basa en el análisis de la resecabilidad del tumor en los estudios por imágenes, siendo la resección completa el tratamiento estándar para cualquier estadio. El objetivo principal fue evaluar la supervivencia global y la supervivencia libre de enfermedad de los pacientes con diagnóstico de NET sometidos a tratamiento quirúrgico. El objetivo secundario fue comparar la supervivencia global de acuerdo al tipo de resección quirúrgica, el estadio de Masaoka-Koga y subtipo histológico. Estudio observacional descriptivo realizado en el Hospital Británico de Buenos Aires desde 2004 a 2020. Se incluyeron 42 pacientes operados de tumores en mediastino anterior con diagnóstico histopatológico definitivo de NET. Treinta y nueve eran timomas y 3 carcinomas tímicos. La cirugía realizada en todos los pacientes fue una timectomia total. La mediana de seguimiento fue de 63.5 meses (RIQ 32-97.5). La supervivencia global estimada a los cinco y diez años fue del 87% (95% IC, 0.69-0.95) y 78% (95% IC, 0.5-0.92), respectivamente. La supervivencia libre de enfermedad estimada a cinco y diez años fue del 90% (95% IC, 0.74-0.96). Los pacientes a los que se le realizó una resección completa y que tenían estadios tem pranos de Masaoka-Koga presentaron una supervivencia global superior en comparación con las resecciones incompletas y estadios avanzados (p = 0.0097 y p = 0.0028, respectivamente). Al contar con un bajo número de pacientes en el grupo de carcinomas tímicos, no pudimos sacar conclusiones en cuanto a supervivencia entre éstos y los timomas.


Abstract Thymic epithelial tumors are a group of rare neoplasms of the mediastinum. When resectable, complete resection is considered the gold standard for any stage. The primary endpoint was to evaluate overall survival and disease-free survival of patients with thymus epithelial tumors who underwent surgical treatment. The secondary endpoint was to evaluate and compare the overall survival according to: resection type (complete vs. incomplete), Masaoka-Koga stage and tumor histology according to WHO classification. This is a descriptive observational study from January 2004 to December 2020, in which 42 patients with a postoperative histopathological diagnosis of thymic epithelial tumours were included. Thirty-nine were thymomas (92.9%) and 3 were thymic carcinomas (7.1%). In all patients a total thymectomy was performed. The median follow-up was 63.5 months (IQR 32-97.5). The estimated overall survival at five and ten years was 87% (95% CI, 0.69-0.95) and 78% (95% CI, 0.5-0.92), respectively. Estimated disease-free survival at five and ten years was 90% (95% CI, 0.74-0.96). Patients who underwent complete resection and with early Masaoka-Koga stages had superior overall survival compared to incomplete resections and advanced Masaoka-Koga stages (p = 0.0097 and p = 0.0028, respectively). We found no differences in terms of survival between histological subtypes due to a low number of patients in the thymic carcinoma group.

The primary endpoint was to evaluate overall survival and disease-free survival of patients with thymus epithelial tumors who underwent surgical treatment. The secondary endpoint was to evaluate and compare the overall survival according to: resection type (complete vs. incomplete), Masaoka-Koga stage and tumor histology according to WHO classification. Las neoplasias epiteliales del timo (NET) son tumores infrecuentes. El manejo inicial de las mismas se basa en el análisis de la resecabilidad del tumor en los estudios por imágenes, siendo la resección completa el tratamiento estándar para cualquier estadio. El objetivo principal fue evaluar la supervivencia global y la supervivencia libre de enfermedad de los pacientes con diagnóstico de NET sometidos a tratamiento quirúrgico. El objetivo secundario fue comparar la supervivencia global de acuerdo al tipo de resección quirúrgica, el estadio de Masaoka-Koga y subtipo histológico. Estudio observacional descriptivo realizado en el Hospital Británico de Buenos Aires desde 2004 a 2020. Se incluyeron 42 pacientes operados de tumores en mediastino anterior con diagnóstico histopatológico definitivo de NET. Treinta y nueve eran timomas y 3 carcinomas tímicos. La cirugía realizada en todos los pacientes fue una timectomia total. La mediana de seguimiento fue de 63.5 meses (RIQ 32-97.5). La supervivencia global estimada a los cinco y diez años fue del 87% (95% IC, 0.69-0.95) y 78% (95% IC, 0.5-0.92), respectivamente. La supervivencia libre de enfermedad estimada a cinco y diez años fue del 90% (95% IC, 0.74-0.96). Los pacientes a los que se le realizó una resección completa y que tenían estadios tempranos de Masaoka-Koga presentaron una supervivencia global superior en comparación con las resecciones incompletas y estadios avanzados (p = 0.0097 y p = 0.0028, respectivamente). Al contar con un bajo número de pacientes en el grupo de carcinomas tímicos, no pudimos sacar conclusiones en cuanto a supervivencia entre éstos y los timomas.

Although for many diseases there is a progressive diagnosis scale, automatic analysis of grade-based medical images is quite often addressed as a binary classification problem, missing the finer distinction and intrinsic relation between the different possible stages or grades. Ordinal regression (or classification) considers the order of the values of the categorical labels and thus takes into account the order of grading scales used to assess the severity of different medical conditions. This paper presents a quantum-inspired deep probabilistic learning ordinal regression model for medical image diagnosis that takes advantage of the representational power of deep learning and the intrinsic ordinal information of disease stages. The method is evaluated on two different medical image analysis tasks: prostate cancer diagnosis and diabetic retinopathy grade estimation on eye fundus images. The experimental results show that the proposed method not only improves the diagnosis performance on the two tasks but also the interpretability of the results by quantifying the uncertainty of the predictions in comparison to conventional deep classification and regression architectures. Central venous disease (CVD) is a serious complication in hemodialysis patients. Neurological manifestations are rare. We describe a female with end-stage renal disease with throbbing headache accompanied by paresthesia, weakness, and abnormal posture of her right hand during dialysis sessions. Motor symptoms completely resolved after each dialysis session, although the headaches persisted for several hours. No neurological deficit was evidenced on physical examination. Digital subtraction angiography identified an incomplete thrombosis of the left brachiocephalic vein with retrograde flow in the internal jugular vein, sigmoid sinus, and transverse sinus on the left side. This case illustrates that cerebral venous congestion due to CVD can produce neurological symptoms. Furthermore, we systematically review the literature to identify the characteristics of the cases described so far. This allows clinicians to know the entity and have a high index of suspicion in a hemodialysis patient who develops neurological symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: To create a mandibular shape prediction model using machine learning techniques and geometric morphometrics. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Six hundred twenty-nine radiographs were used to select the most appropriate craniomaxillary variables in different craniofacial pattern classifications using a support vector machine. To obtain the three-dimensional mandibular shape, a Procrustes fit was used on 55 tomograms, in which 17 three-dimensional landmarks were digitized. A partial least square regression was employed to find the best covariation between craniomaxillary angles and the symmetric components of mandibular shape. The model was applied to a new sample of six tomograms and evaluated by the mean absolute error. Each mandible predicted was assessed using the Hausdorff distance (HDu) and a color scale. The model was also exploratively applied to six new radiographs. RESULTS: Covariation was 88.66% with a significance of < 0.0001 explained by twelve craniomaxillary variables. Low differences between the original and predicted models were obtained, with a mean absolute error of 0.0143. The mean distance between meshes ranged from 0.0033 to 0.0059 HDu and each color scale demonstrated general similarity between the surfaces. CONCLUSIONS: This approach offered promising results in obtaining a mandibular prediction model that enhances shape properties in an economical way and is applicable to a Latin American population. Clinical proof of this method will require further studies with larger samples. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: This method offers a reliable, economic alternative to traditional mandibular prediction methods and is applicable to the Latin American population.

Given the limitations of frequentist method for null hypothesis significance testing, different authors recommend alternatives such as Bayesian inference. A poor understanding of both statistical frameworks is common among clinicians. The present is a gentle narrative review of the frequentist and Bayesian methods intended for physicians not familiar with mathematics. The frequentist p-value is the probability of finding a value equal to or higher than that observed in a study, assuming that the null hypothesis (H0) is true. The H0 is rejected or not based on a p threshold of 0.05, and this dichotomous approach does not express the probability that the alternative hypothesis (H1) is true. The Bayesian method calculates the probability of H1 and H0 considering prior odds and the Bayes factor (Bf). Prior odds are the researcher's belief about the probability of H1, and the Bf quantifies how consistent the data is concerning H1 and H0. The Bayesian prediction is not dichotomous but is expressed in continuous scales of the Bf and of the posterior odds. The JASP software enables the performance of both frequentist and Bayesian analyses in a friendly and intuitive way, and its application is displayed at the end of the paper. In conclusion, the frequentist method expresses how consistent the data is with H0 in terms of p-values, with no consideration of the probability of H1. The Bayesian model is a more comprehensive prediction because it quantifies in continuous scales the evidence for H1 versus H0 in terms of the Bf and the

Es común entre los médicos una comprensión deficiente de ambos marcos estadísticos. Esta es una revisión narrativa amigable de los métodos frecuentista y bayesiano dirigida quienes no están familiarizados con las matemáticas. El valor de p frecuentista es la probabilidad de encontrar un valor igual o superior al observado en un estudio, asumiendo que la hipótesis nula (H0) es cierta. La H0 se rechaza o no con base en un umbral p de 0.05, y este enfoque dicotómico no expresa la probabilidad de que la hipótesis alternativa (H1) sea verdadera. El método bayesiano calcula la probabilidad de H1 y H0 considerando las probabilidades a priori y el factor de Bayes (fB). Las probabilidades a priori son la creencia del investigador sobre la probabilidad de H1, y el fB cuantifica cuán consistentes son los datos con respecto a H1 y H0.
