In this study, the effect of biochar from oat hulls (BO) on the rheological properties of a PG 64-22 asphalt binder was evaluated using a full factorial design, which included the following factors: pyrolysis temperature (PT) (300 °C and 500 °C), BO particle size (<20 µm and <75 µm), and the amount of BO (2.5%, 5%, and 7.5%). First, the morphological and physicochemical properties of BO were analyzed by comparing it with graphite powder (CFG) and commercial activated carbon (CAC). The physicochemical properties of the modified asphalt binder were then evaluated using confocal laser microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Its storage stability was also evaluated. Subsequently, the rutting parameter G*/sin(δ) and the Fraass breaking point were analyzed to select asphalt binders that extended their viscoelastic range. The asphalt binders selected were those with 2.5%, 5%, and 7.5% BO, produced at a PT of 300 °C with a particle size <20 µm (BO300S). Next, the rheological properties of the selected samples were evaluated by testing for rotational viscosity, rutting parameter G*/sin(δ), multiple stress creep recovery (MSCR), fatigue parameter G*·sin(δ), and creep stiffness by bending beam rheometry (BBR). The rheological aging index according to rutting parameter G*/sin(δ) (RAI) was also evaluated. These tests were conducted in different states of the asphalt binder: original, short-term aged, and long-term aged. According to the results, the application of BO300S significantly increased the resistance of the asphalt binder to rutting and rotational viscosity, proportional to the amount added to the asphalt binder. Moreover, low modifier percentages improved fatigue resistance, outperforming CFG and CAC. In addition, it performs well at low service temperatures, registering better resistance than the control asphalt binders.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, chronic kidney disease has increased in the pediatric population and has been related to environmental factors. In the diagnosis of kidney damage, in addition to the traditional parameters, early kidney damage biomarkers, such as kidney injury molecule 1, cystatin C, and osteopontin, among others, have been implemented as predictors of early pathological processes. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to evaluate the relationship between exposure to environmental pollutants and early kidney damage biomarkers. METHODS: A cross-sectional pilot study was conducted in February 2016 and involved 115 apparently healthy children aged 6-15 residing in Apizaco, Tlaxcala. Participant selection was carried out randomly from among 16,472 children from the municipality of Apizaco. A socio-demographic questionnaire included age, sex, education, duration of residence in the area, occupation, water consumption and dietary habits, pathological history, and some non-specific symptoms. Physical examination included blood pressure, weight, and height. The urine concentrations of urinary aluminum, total arsenic, boron, calcium, chromium, copper, mercury, potassium, sodium, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, lead, selenium, silicon, thallium, vanadium, uranium, and zinc, were measured. Four of the 115 participants selected for the study were excluded due to an incomplete questionnaire or lack of a medical examination, leaving a final sample population of 111 participants. RESULTS: The results showed a mean estimated glomerular filtration rate of 89.1 ± 9.98 mL/min/1.73m2 and a mean albumin/creatinine ratio of 12.9 ± 16.7 mg/g urinary creatinine. We observed a positive and significant correlation between estimated glomerular filtration rate with fluoride, total arsenic and lead, and a correlation of albumin/creatinine ratio with fluoride, vanadium, and total arsenic. There was also a significant correlation between the early kidney damage biomarkers and fluoride, vanadium, and total arsenic, except for cystatin C. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our results show that four urinary biomarkers: α1-microglobulin, cystatin C, kidney injury molecule 1, and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin are related to environmental exposure to urinary fluoride, vanadium, and total arsenic in our pediatric population.

The purpose of this study was to verify the feasibility of using biochar from oat hulls (BO) as a potential bio-modifier to improve the physical properties of conventional asphalt binder. The BO and asphalt binder were characterized by confocal (fluorescence) laser microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Then, an asphalt binder modification procedure was established and modifications with 2.5, 5.0 and 7.5% of BO on the weight of the asphalt binder were evaluated, using a particle size < 75 µm. The physical properties of the evaluated modified asphalt binder with BO were: rotational viscosity in original and aged state, aging index, Fraass breaking point, softening point, penetration, penetration rate and storage stability. The results indicated that the BO has a porous structure, able to interact with the asphalt binder by C=O and C=C bonds. In addition, modification of the asphalt binder with BO increases the rotational viscosity related to high-temperature rutting resistance. The results obtained from the Fraass breaking point and softening point indicated that the use of BO extends the viscoelastic range of the asphalt binder. In addition, the evaluated modifications present low susceptibility to aging and good storage stability.

OBJECTIVES: To test the clinical performance of a novel continuous noninvasive cardiac output (CO) monitoring based on expired carbon dioxide kinetics in cardiac surgery patients. DESIGN: A prospective feasibility pragmatic clinical study. SETTING: A single-center, large community hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-two patients undergoing cardiac surgery were studied during the intraoperative (before cardiopulmonary bypass) and postoperative (in the intensive care unit before extubation) periods. INTERVENTIONS: CO was measured simultaneously by the continuous capnodynamic method and by transpulmonary thermodilution during changes in the patient's hemodynamic and/or respiratory conditions. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: The current recommended comparative statistics for CO measurement methods were analyzed, including bias, precision, and percentage error obtained from Bland-Altman analysis, and concordance between methods obtained from the four-quadrant plot analysis to evaluate the trending ability. Bias ± limits of agreement and percentage error were -0.6 (-1.9 to +0.8; 95% CI of 3.73-5.25) L/min and 31% (n = 147 measurements) for the intraoperative period, -0.8 (-2.4 to +0.9; 95% CI of 3.03-5.21) L/min and 41% (n = 66) for the postoperative period, and -0.6 (-2.1 to +0.8; 95% CI of 3.74-5.00) L/min and 34% (n = 213) for the pooled data. The trending analysis obtained a concordance of 82% (n = 65) for the intraoperative and 71% (n = 24) for the early postoperative periods. Aggregation of both data sets gave a concordance of 79% (n = 89). CONCLUSIONS: The continuous capnodynamic method was reliable and in good agreement with the reference method, and had an accuracy and trending ability good enough to make it a possible future alternative for hemodynamic monitoring in the studied population of elective adult cardiac surgery patients.

Biochar (BC) is a porous, carbonaceous material produced by slow pyrolysis of biomass under oxygen-limited conditions. BC production has been attracting research interest because it modifies soil physicochemical characteristics and improves the growth of plants in problem soils. These benefits may be best actualized for soils contaminated by metals, where remediation is hampered by metal toxicity to both plants and soil microbial communities. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the impact of the addition of chicken manure biochar (CMB), oat hull biochar (OHB), or pine bark biochar (PBB) on copper (Cu) bioavailability in a Cu-contaminated soil, the effectiveness of these BCs promoting plant growth, and its effects on soil microbial communities supporting these plants. A sandy soil (338 mg Cu kg-1) was amended with CMB, OHB, and PBB, and the metallophyte Oenothera picensis or the agricultural species Solanum lycopersicum and Lolium perenne were grown for 3 months. The BCs produced an increase in soil pH, reduced the exchangeable Cu, and increased Cu bound to organic matter and residual fractions. All BCs enhanced the quality of contaminated soil and increased the plant biomass production, notably for S. lycopersicum, which grew until 12 times more than plants in non-amended soil. While BC addition reduced the concentration of Cu in soil pore water, the amendment did not reduce the concentrations of Cu in shoot tissues. BC additions also stimulated soil microorganisms, increasing basal respiration and DHA activity and modifying microbial communities, especially in soils supporting L. perenne. These results indicate that BCs represent an effective tool to remediate Cu-contaminated sandy soils.

In this study, we evaluated polyurethane foam (PF), volcanic rock (VR), and a modified plastic cap (MPC) as supports for the immobilization of organophosphorus (OP) pesticide-degrading actinobacterial strains. The colonization and activity of four streptomycetes were favoured by PF, which was selected as the carrier to use in a continuous stirred tank bioreactor (CSTR) that can be operated at increasing inflows of a pesticide mixture that contains the insecticides chlorpyrifos (CP) and diazinon (DZ). Our results demonstrate that the CSTR can be operated at flow rates of 10 and 40 mL h-1 with greater than 85% removal of the pesticides in the short term. A significant decrease in the efficiency of CP removal was observed at the highest inflows into the reactor. The CP and DZ loading rates in the bioreactor ranged from 0.44 to 1.68 mg L-1 h-1 and from 0.50 to 2.17 mg L-1 h-1, respectively. Although the treated wastewater exhibited moderate toxicity for Raphanus sativus, a bioreactor inoculated with a mixed culture formed by Streptomyces spp. strains AC5, AC9, GA11 and ISP13 may provide an effective biotechnological strategy for the reduction of OP pesticide residues produced during agronomic and manufacturing practices and therefore prevent environmental pesticidal pollution.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of foliar sprays containing boron (B) nano-fertilizer (NF) on the growth and physiology of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and zucchini (Cucurbita pepo). Plants were grown under greenhouse conditions for 60 days on a modified Hoagland solution with the presence and absence of boron (+B or -B). A synthesized B-NF foliar spray and a commercial B foliar fertilizer (Bortrac™ 150, BT) was applied at a concentration of 30 mg B L-1 at 10-d intervals throughout the experiment. The B-NF treatment increased the growth of lettuce 2.7- and 1.9-fold for shoots and roots, respectively, with an average production of lettuce biomass by ~58%. Similarly, the NF increased the growth of zucchini by 18 and 66% compared with Control-B (the absence of B), and 13 and 36% compared with BT, both for shoots and roots, respectively. Nevertheless, NF + B mostly decreased lettuce growth with symptoms of B toxicity in leaves. In lettuce, addition of B did not affect concentrations of phenols; however, in zucchini, Control-B induced a higher production of phenolic compounds possibly related to B deficiency. The B addition in lettuce reduced the DPPH activity by 32 and 21% in NF and BT, respectively, compared to Control-B. These responses were similar in zucchini; however, the effect of B was product of its presence in mineral solution rather than due the foliar product applied. This suggests that a NF-based delivery system for B may be highly effective at boosting plant productivity on B-limited soils.

Para tal fim, utiliza um método de análise que implica construção documental, entrevistas e estudo teórico sobre a história e a atualidade da psicologia e da psicanálise nessas cidades. Entende-se que, além da chamada "crise" da psicanálise, ela mantém uma posição predominante nesses cursos. Espera-se que este trabalho contribua para uma discussão contextualizada dos cursos de psicologia em suas revisões curriculares.(AU)
We aim to analyse the situation of psychoanalysis in psychology undergraduate courses from universities of Rio de Janeiro, comparing these with the ones from Buenos Aires. For that purpose, we use a method of analysis that involves documental construction, interviews and theoretical study on the past history and the present reality of psychology and psychoanalysis in those cities. We understand that, besides the so-called "crisis" of psychoanalysis, this theoretical orientation maintains a predominant position in those courses. We expect that this work contributes to a contextualized discussion of psychology undergraduate courses and their curricular revisions.(AU)

Biochar (BC) is gaining attention as a soil amendment that can remediate metal polluted soils. The simultaneous effects of BC on copper (Cu) mobility, microbial activities in soil using metallophytes have scarcely been addressed. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of biochar BCs on Cu immobilization and over soil microbial communities in a Cu-contaminated soil evaluated over a two-year trial. A Cu-contaminated soil (338mgkg-1) was incubated with chicken manure biochar (CMB) or oat hull biochar (OHB) at rates of 1 and 5% w/w. Metallophyte Oenothera picensis was grown over one season (six months). The above process was repeated for 3 more consecutive seasons using the same soils. The BCs increased the soil pH and decreased the Cu exchangeable fraction Cu by 5 and 10 times (for OHB and CMB, respectively) by increasing the Cu bound in organic matter and residual fractions, and its effects were consistent across all seasons evaluated. BCs provided favorable habitat for microorganisms that was evident in increased microbial activity. The DHA activity was increased in all BC treatments, reaching a maximum of 7 and 6 times higher than control soils in CMB and OHB. Similar results were observed in microbial respiration, which increased 53% in OHB and 61% in CMB with respect to control. The BCs produced changes in microbial communities in all seasons evaluated. The fungal and bacterial richness were increased by CMB and OHB treatments; however, no clear effects were observed in the microbial diversity estimators. The physiochemical and microbiological effects produced by BC result in an increase of plant biomass production, which was on average 3 times higher than control treatments. However, despite being a metallophyte, O. picensis did not uptake Cu efficiently. Root and shoot Cu concentrations decreased or changed insignificantly in most BC treatments.

We characterized humic substances (HS) extracted from a Cu-contaminated soil without compost addition (C) or amended with a wheat straw-based compost (WSC) (H1), co-composted with Fe2O3 (H2), or co-composted with an allophane-rich soil (H3). Extracted HS were characterized under electron microscopy (SEM/TEM), energy-dispersive X-ray (X-EDS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. In addition, HS extracted from WSC (H4) were characterized at pH 4.0 and 8.0 with descriptive purposes. At pH 4.0, globular structures of H4 were observed, some of them aggregating within a large network. Contrariwise, at pH 8.0, long tubular and disaggregated structures prevailed. TEM microscopy suggests organo-mineral interactions at scales of 1 to 200 nm with iron oxide nanoparticles. HS extracted from soil-compost incubations showed interactions at nanoscale with minerals and crystal compounds into the organic matrix of HS. Bands associated to acidic functional groups of HS may suggest potential sorption interactions with transition metals. We conclude that metal ions and pH have an important role controlling the morphology and configuration of HS from WSC. Characterization of H4 extracted from WSC showed that physicochemical protection of HS could be present in composting systems treated with inorganic materials. Finally, the humified fractions obtained from compost-amended soils may have an important effect on metal-retention, supporting their potential use in metal-contaminated soils.

INTRODUCCIÓN La calidad de vida relacionada con la salud bucal (CVRSB) es un indicador del estado bucodental percibido, y cómo este impacta en las actividades diarias. Se desconoce la CVRSB en adolescentes de la zona. OBJETIVO Evaluar la CVRSB y la necesidad de salud bucal (SB) percibida por escolares de sexto grado del Área Programa del Centro de Salud Almafuerte. Periodo 2016. Además, evaluar la validez convergente del cuestionario empleado. METODOLOGÍA Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal. Se utilizó la versión resumida, auto administrada y en español del Child Perceptions Questionnaire para adolescentes de 11 a 14 años, el cual evalúa dos preguntas claves; SB percibida y el impacta de SB en las actividades diarias; y cuatro dimensiones de CVRSB (Sintomatología bucal, Limitación Funcional, Bienestar Emocional y Social); rango posible; 0-64 puntos. A mayor puntaje, peor calidad de vida. Se estimaron medianas de los puntajes, comparadas con el test Kruskal-Wallis o Mann-Whitney, y las media geométrica (IC95%). Para evaluar la correlación se usó el test de Spearman. Se consideró significativo una p<.05.Se empleó el software Stata 11.1 Statistics /Data Analysis. RESULTADOS La tasa de respuesta fue del 97,3% (144/148). El 59% (85/144) fueron mujeres. Mediana de edad; 11 años, P25-75 (11-12 años). El 51,3% (77) calificó su SB como mala; y el 82,5% (118) que su SB afectó poco sus actividades diarias, (p>.05). El puntaje medio de CVRSB fue de 11,9; IC95%(10,5-13,5) puntos. Puntajes más altos en Sintomatología bucal; y más bajas en Bienestar social, (p>.05). Validez convergente con las preguntas claves; 0,41 y 0,49, (p<.05). DISCUSIÓN Más de la mitad de los adolescentes calificaron su SB de regular a muy mala; sin percibir impacto en sus actividades diarias. Los síntomas bucales y las limitaciones funcionales influyeron en la percepción de necesidad de SB. El cuestionario tuvo validez convergente

Mobilized peripheral blood (MPB) bone marrow cells possess the potential to differentiate into a variety of mesenchymal tissue types and offer a source of easy access for obtaining stem cells for the development of experimental models with applications in tissue engineering. In the present work, we aimed to isolate by magnetic activated cell sorting CD90+ cells from MPB by means of the administration of Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor and to evaluate cell proliferation capacity, after thawing of the in vitro culture of this population of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) in sheep. We obtained a median of 8.2 ± 0.6 million of CD90+ cells from the 20-mL MPB sample. After thawing, at day 15 under in vitro culture, the mean CD90+ cells determined by flow cytometry was 92.92 ± 1.29 % and cell duplication time determined by crystal violet staining was 47.59 h. This study describes for the first time the isolation, characterization, and post-in vitro culture thawing of CD90+ MSCs from mobilized peripheral blood in sheep. This population can be considered as a source of MSCs for experimental models in tissue engineering research.

INTRODUCTION: Most cases of the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) infection are self-limited, but occasionally the disease evolves to a severe condition needing hospitalization. Here we describe the evolution of the respiratory compromise, ventilatory management and laboratory variables of patients with diffuse viral pneumonitis caused by pandemic 2009 influenza A (H1N1) admitted to the ICU. METHOD: This was a multicenter, prospective inception cohort study including adult patients with acute respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation (MV) admitted to 20 ICUs in Argentina between June and September of 2009 during the influenza A (H1N1) pandemic. In a standard case-report form, we collected epidemiological characteristics, results of real-time reverse-transcriptase--polymerase-chain-reaction viral diagnostic tests, oxygenation variables, acid-base status, respiratory mechanics, ventilation management and laboratory tests. Variables were recorded on ICU admission and at days 3, 7 and 10. RESULTS: During the study period 178 patients with diffuse viral pneumonitis requiring MV were admitted. They were 44 ± 15 years of age, with Acute Physiology And Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) scores of 18 ± 7, and most frequent comorbidities were obesity (26%), previous respiratory disease (24%) and immunosuppression (16%). Non-invasive ventilation (NIV) was applied in 49 (28%) patients on admission, but 94% were later intubated.Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) was present throughout the entire ICU stay in the whole group (mean PaO2/FIO2 170 ± 25). Tidal-volumes used were 7.8 to 8.1 ml/kg (ideal body weight), plateau pressures always remained < 30 cmH2O, without differences between survivors and non-survivors; and mean positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) levels used were between 8 to 12 cm H2O. Rescue therapies, like recruitment maneuvers (8 to 35%), prone positioning (12 to 24%) and tracheal gas insufflation (3%) were frequently applied. At all time points, pH, platelet count, lactate dehydrogenase assay (LDH) and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment (SOFA) differed significantly between survivors and non-survivors. Lack of recovery of platelet count and persistence of leukocytosis were characteristic of non-survivors. Mortality was high (46%); and length of MV was 10 (6 to 17) days. CONCLUSIONS: These patients had severe, hypoxemic respiratory failure compatible with ARDS that persisted over time, frequently requiring rescue therapies to support oxygenation. NIV use is not warranted, given its high failure rate. Death and evolution to prolonged mechanical ventilation were common outcomes. Persistence of thrombocytopenia, acidosis and leukocytosis, and high LDH levels found in non-survivors during the course of the disease might be novel prognostic findings.

La presente sistematización se realizó en el marco del Proyecto Interinstitucional por una Infancia Saludable (PRISA), proyecto interinstitucional de prácticas académicas en el que participaron seis facultades del área de la salud de la Universidad de Antioquia. La sistematización partió de un proceso reflexivo y continúo con un riguroso transcurso metodológico a través del cual se encontró el sentido a las voces de los actores participantes en PRISA y en la sistematización. El proceso de reflexión e indagación conllevó al establecimiento de los objetivos de la sistematización y a la definición de las técnicas de investigación más propicias para interactuar con los actores de PRISA y encontrar el sentido a sus vivencias. Se establecieron los siguientes objetivos; entre otros: a) indagar por el concepto de Práctica Social y académica de las unidades académicas que participaron en PRISA. b) indagar por el sentido de las prácticas académicas para los actores participantes en PRISA. Entre los hallazgos de la sistematización se evidencia que PRISA constituyó un escenario de vivencias y de aprendizajes, de esta manera el concepto instrumental e instructivo de la práctica se transformó, porque profesores, estudiantes y comunidad le dieron otros sentidos a la misma, generando acciones pedagógicas y sociales que, en la búsqueda de otros significados, configuraron nuevos propósitos y motivaciones que trascendieron lo propuesto institucionalmente; instaurándose nuevas relaciones e intersubjetividades y, por lo tanto, generando aprendizajes desde la práctica.
It was systematization method applied to the project for a healthy childhood-PRISA-academic practices that involved six health programs from the University of Antioquia. The systematization begun with a reflexive process involving a systematic and continue accurate methodological processes that allowed us to find the meaning of actors experiences working in PRISA and participating in the systematization method. The process led us to establish the objectives of the systematization and the definition of investigative techniques more appropriate for the actors of PRISA in order to find the meaning of their experiences. The following objectives were proposed: a) to investigate the concept of academic practice and social academic units that are applied by people working in PRISA. b) To investigate actors academic practice outcomes working in PRISA. We found with the systematization method that PRISA was a place for learning experiences. The concept of instrumental and instructive practice was essential, for teachers, students and community who found meaning for this practice, this experience made they to take pedagogical and social actions, to search for other meanings, creating new purposes and motivations that may go beyond the institutional proposals, establishing new relationships and therefore generating knowledge for themselves.

Ballantyne syndrome or mirror syndrome is a triad consisting of the presence of fetal hydrops, generalized edema placentomegaly mother. May be related to any cause of fetal hydrops. The fetal prognosis is poor in untreated cases, the mother has reference to be the cause or the termination of pregnancy. Present the case of a 26-year-old who developed mirror syndrome secondary to non-immune fetal hydrops of unknown origin, accompanied by preeclampsia.
