RESUMEN

The superior parietal lobule (SPL) is a region of the brain that has been associated with a diverse range of high-level visual and cognitive functions. This suggested the possibility that it supports a lower-level function that is engaged by a wide range of experimental tasks. Analysis of tasks used in previous studies suggests that one such lower-level function might be the perception of the distance between stimuli in the image plane. In this study, we applied online high-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) over the left SPL or the vertex in order to further investigate the role played by this region in the perceived visual separation between points. As a control task, we asked participants to detect the difference in contrast between two Gabor patches. The results failed to support the main hypothesis, but we unexpectedly found that rTMS to left SPL improved peripheral contrast discrimination. Previous studies have found that rTMS to the right frontal eye field, which has strong functional connectivity with the SPL, has the same effect, suggesting the two areas work together to influence early visual areas.

RESUMEN

This paper presents a model of situation awareness (SA) that emphasises that SA is necessarily built using a subset of available information. A technique (Quantitative Analysis of Situation Awareness - QASA), based around signal detection theory, has been developed from this model that provides separate measures of actual SA (ASA) and perceived SA (PSA), together with a feature unique to QASA, a measure of bias (information acceptance). These measures allow the exploration of the relationship between actual SA, perceived SA and information acceptance. QASA can also be used for the measurement of dynamic ASA, PSA and bias. Example studies are presented and full details of the implementation of the QASA technique are provided. Practitioner Summary: This paper presents a new model of situation awareness (SA) together with an associated tool (Quantitative Analysis of Situation Awareness - QASA) that employs signal detection theory to measure several aspects of SA, including actual and perceived SA and information acceptance. Full details are given of the implementation of the tool.

Everybody would agree that vision guides locomotion; but how does vision influence choice when there are different solutions for possible foot placement? We addressed this question by investigating the impact of perceptual grouping on foot placement in humans. Participants performed a stepping stone task in which pathways consisted of target stones in a spatially regular path of foot falls and visual distractor stones in their proximity. Target and distractor stones differed in shape and colour so that each subset of stones could be easily grouped perceptually. In half of the trials, one target stone swapped shape and colour with a distractor in its close proximity. We show that in these 'swapped' conditions, participants chose the perceptually groupable, instead of the spatially regular, stepping location in over 40% of trials, even if the distance between perceptually groupable steps was substantially larger than normal step width/length. This reveals that the existence of a pathway that could be traversed without spatial disruption to periodic stepping is not sufficient to guarantee participants will select it and suggests competition between different types of visual input when choosing foot placement. We propose that a bias in foot placement choice in favour of visual grouping exists as, in nature, sudden changes in visual characteristics of the ground increase the uncertainty for stability.
