RESUMEN

Black gram [Vigna mungo (L.) Hepper] is a highly nutritious grain legume crop, mainly grown in South and Southeast Asia, with the largest area in India, where the crop is challenged by several biotic and abiotic stresses leading to significant yield losses. Improving genetic gains to increase on-farm yields is the primary goal of black gram breeding programs. This could be achieved by developing varieties resistant to major diseases like mungbean yellow mosaic disease, urdbean leaf crinkle virus, Cercospora leaf spot, anthracnose, powdery mildew, and insect pests such as whitefly, cowpea aphids, thrips, stem flies, and bruchids. Along with increasing on-farm yields, incorporating market-preferred traits ensures the adoption of improved varieties. Black gram breeding programs rely upon a limited number of parental lines, leading to a narrow genetic base of the developed varieties. For accelerating genetic gain, there is an urgent need to include more diverse genetic material for improving traits for better adaptability and stress resistance in breeding populations. The present review summarizes the importance of black gram, the major biotic and abiotic stresses, available genetic and genomic resources, major traits for potential crop improvement, their inheritance, and the breeding approaches being used in black gram for the development of new varieties.

A series of chalcones (1-14) were synthesized, characterized (using IR and 1H NMR techniques), and evaluated with an objective to manage rice root-knot nematode (RRKN) (Meloidogyne graminicola) both under pluronic gel and field conditions. Out of these fourteen compounds, 1-(4-fluoro-phenyl)-3-phenyl-propenone (13) and 1,3-diphenyl-propenone (14) showed promising and dose dependent activity at 10, 20, and 40 mg L-1. A significant reduction in penetration of second stage juveniles (J2s) in rice roots was observed in compounds 13 (9.5-12.0 J2s/plant) and 14 (10.5-13.4 J2s/plant) compared to control plants (PB1121) (13.5-23.6 J2s/plant) in pluronic gel study. The results of field trials indicated that 14, showed significantly (P ≤ 0.05) better plant growth on 28 days after sowing (DAS) compared to 13. Both 13 and 14 reduced gall formation significantly than carbofuran 3 G @1 kg a.i./ha. However, lower concentrations were less effective in field in reducing the gall formation. Also, a significant reduction in the number of galls was observed when soil was drenched with 14 @ 40 mg L-1. However, root dipping was not as effective as soil drenching. The study revealed that both the chalcones have the potential for effective management of RRKN in fields, and can be a better alternative to carbofuran.

Bacterial blight caused by Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. punicae is a major disease of pomegranate. Bacterial blight drastically reduces the yield and quality of fruits, which are critical for pomegranate production. Precise and early diagnosis of bacterial blight is crucial for active surveillance and effective management of the disease. Symptoms based disease diagnostic methods are labor-intensive, time-consuming and may not detect disease on asymptomatic plants. DNA-based disease diagnostics using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) are reliable, precise, accurate and quick. PCR coupled with agarose gel electrophoresis (PCR-AGE), PCR coupled with capillary electrophoresis (PCR-CE) and real-time PCR (qPCR) were applied for the early and accurate diagnosis of bacterial blight in pomegranate. PCR-CE and qPCR were capable of diagnosing bacterial blight 6 to 10 days before symptom appearance, with detection limits of 100 fg and 10 fg of bacterial DNA respectively. However, conventional PCR-AGE detected pathogen at the onset of disease symptoms with a detection limit of 10 pg of bacterial DNA. qPCR detected bacterial blight in orchards that did not show any disease symptoms. Our data demonstrate that qPCR is more sensitive than other PCR methods along with being reliable for early diagnosis.

RESUMEN

We report a case of accidental clopidogrel administration in a patient receiving ongoing epidural analgesia postoperatively. The epidural catheter was removed 7 hours after the clopidogrel dose without incident. The onset of inhibition of adenosine diphosphate-induced platelet aggregation in healthy individuals has been reported at 12 to 24 hours after administration of a single 75-mg dose of clopidogrel. This case demonstrates the importance of understanding clopidogrel's pharmacology to avoid ordering unnecessary tests, which may delay catheter removal. Consideration of appropriate testing and limitations in the context of unintentional antiplatelet administration with indwelling neuraxial catheters is discussed.
