RESUMEN

Pituitary adenomas are benign, but 30-50% of patients do not achieve remission after treatment. The purpose of the study was to analyze the prognostic value of immunoexpression of the proliferation marker Ki-67 and the angiogenetic factors CD31 and VEGF in somatotropinomas. Ki-67, CD31, and VEGF were immunohistochemically studied in the samples of 52 somatotropin-removed samples; medical records were used to analyze the outcome of treatment in the early and late postoperative periods. Ki-67 immunoexpression proved to be significantly higher in the patients who had not achieve remission both in the early (p = 0.042) and late (p = 0.012) postoperative period than in those who had achieved remission and in patients who were resistant to postoperative treatment with somatostatin analogues (p = 0.040) than in those who were sensitive to therapy. The immunoexpression of CD31 and VEGF was not associated with the outcome of treatment. Thus, high Ki-67 levels may be regarded as a poor postoperative prognostic factor in acromegaly.

RESUMEN

A study was made of a correlation between the response of basal metabolism to acute hypoxia and the life span of rats after irradiation resulting in the development of a cerebral form of radiation sickness. The more radiosensitive animals consumed a larger amount of oxygen, exhaled a lesser amount of carbon dioxide, and showed an increased normal expiratory exchange per minute. After the effect of acute hypoxia all the indices under study exhibited an opposite picture.

RESUMEN

The author considers the possibility of prediction of the outcome of radiation sickness after 200 Gy irradiation on the basis of changes in basal metabolism produced by acute hypoxia. It was shown that the animals exhibiting the increased basal metabolism after the effect of hypoxia were more radioresistant. The correlation coefficient was--0,79.

RESUMEN

The authors have revealed a relationship between the original functional state of the vestibular analyzer of rabbits and their individual radiosensitivity. The coefficient of correlation between the vestibular analyzer sensitivity threshold and the life expectancy after exposure to gamma-rays at a linear accelerator of electrons (7.6 MeV, 150 Gy) was 0.505.

RESUMEN

A comparative study was made of the resistance of rats to acute hypoxia and their radiosensitivity. It was shown that the outcome of radiation affection could be predicted, with the accuracy of 57.7-65.8%, on the basis of the resistance of rats to hypoxia.

RESUMEN

Experiments were carried out on male rats exposed to hypoxia and treated with adrenocorticotropin. Determinations were made of the resistance to hypoxia, gas exchange, and also the concentrations of corticosterone, K, Na and the amount of leukocytes in peripheral blood. The prognostication according to these parameters allowed to predict the outcome of radiation sickness with the accuracy of 68-82%. The corticosterone parameters have proved to be the most informative ones.
