RESUMEN

We report two extensively drug-resistant (XDR) Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) isolates combining high-level resistance to azithromycin and resistance to ceftriaxone, obtained in France from two heterosexual patients, one of whom returned from Cambodia. Whole genome sequencing identified MLST ST16406, the mosaic penA-60.001 which caused ceftriaxone resistance in the internationally spreading FC428 clone, and the A2059G mutation in the 23S rRNA gene. The NG isolates F93 and F94 were related to XDR isolates detected in Austria and the United Kingdom in 2022.

RESUMEN

We report nine severe neonatal infections caused by a new variant of echovirus 11. All were male, eight were twins. At illness onset, they were 3-5 days-old and had severe sepsis and liver failure. This new variant, detected in France since April 2022, is still circulating and has caused more fatal neonatal enterovirus infections in 2022 and 2023 (8/496; 1.6%, seven associated with echovirus 11) compared with 2016 to 2021 (7/1,774; 0.4%). National and international alerts are warranted.

RESUMEN

We assessed the sensitivity and specificity of SARS-CoV-2 detection by polymerase chain reaction in heat and moisture exchange filters (HMEF) in mechanically ventilated COVID-19 patients. We showed that testing HMEF might obviate the need for a tracheal sample to affirm that a patient is not ready to end isolation.

RESUMEN

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and has been a global public health concern. Co-infection of SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory syndrome has been rarely reported. We report coinfection of SARS-CoV-2 and 2009 H1N1 Influenza strain in a French patient with pneumonia leading to acute respiratory distress syndrome.  The patient also had a medical history of pulmonary sarcoidosis with a restrictive ventilatory syndrome, which would be a supplementary risk to develop a poor outcomes. This case highlights the possible coinfection of two severe SARS-CoV-2 and influenza H1N1 viruses, which presents a higher risk to extend the care duration. The overlapping clinical features of the two respiratory syndromes is a challenge, and awareness is required to recommend an early differential diagnosis.

RESUMEN

The patient is a 36 year old female who presented breast cancer with leptomeningeal involvement. A systematic lumbar puncture was performed and sent to the laboratory for CSF analysis. CSF examination using wet mount preparation showed a large number of round spherules. After discussion with the ordering physician, we learnt that the patient had received intrathecal liposomal cytarabine injection 19 days earlier. Cytarabine liposomes are spherules with a granular interior and range in size from 10-30 µm. It can be confused with leukocytes and lead to spurious elevation of CSF leukocytes count. Care needs to be taken in interpreting CSF results in patients who have received intrathecal liposomal cytarabine.

RESUMEN

This Perspective article summarizes efforts paid in our group to develop efficient metal-based catalysts for the immortal ring-opening polymerization (iROP) of cyclic esters in the presence of large amounts of alcohols (ROH) as chain transfer agents. The catalyst systems reviewed include discrete organometallic complexes based on rare earths, magnesium, calcium and more specifically zinc, as well as simple systems employing metal triflate salts, notably Al(OTf)(3), for the (stereo)controlled iROP of lactide (LA), beta-butyrolactone (BBL) and trimethylenecarbonate (TMC). Special emphasis is given to systems that allow the use of minute amounts of metal catalysts and large loadings of both monomer and alcohol for the rapid and productive formation of functional polyesters (H-Pol-OR) with controlled molecular features.

RESUMEN

Cu(2+)TerPy is a fairly good catalyst of the cleavage of dinucleoside triphosphates, but its efficiency is not sufficient for use in artificial RNA cleaving enzymes. The present work is aimed at improving the catalysis by Cu(2+)TerPy with additional catalysts. Electrophilic and general acid catalysis have been studied and bifunctional catalysts have been synthesized. The most efficient catalysis was achieved with a Cu(2+)TerPy-dimer.
