RESUMEN

A network of nanomachines (NMs) can be used to build a target detection system for a variety of promising applications. They have the potential to detect toxic chemicals, infectious bacteria, and biomarkers of dangerous diseases such as cancer within the human body. Many diseases and health disorders can be detected early and efficiently treated in the future by utilizing these systems. To fully grasp the potential of these systems, mathematical analysis is required. This paper describes an analytical framework for modeling and analyzing the performance of target detection systems composed of multiple mobile nanomachines of varying sizes with passive/ absorbing boundaries. We consider both direct contact detection, in which NMs must physically contact the target to detect it, and indirect sensing, in which NMs must detect the marker molecules emitted by the target. The detection performance of such systems is calculated for degradable and non-degradable targets, as well as mobile and stationary targets. The derived expressions provide various insights, such as the effect of NM density and target degradation on detection probability.

Nowadays, a very important motivation for the development of new functional materials for medical purposes is not only their performance but also whether they are environmentally friendly. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the possibility of labelling (bio)degradable polymers, in particular those intended for specific applications, especially in the medical sector, and the potential of information storage in such polymers, making it possible, for example, to track the ultimate environmental fate of plastics. This article presents a straightforward green approach that combines both aspects using an oligopeptide, which is an integral part of polymer material, to store binary information in a physical mixture of polymer and oligopeptide. In the proposed procedure the year of production of polymer films made of poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) and a blend of poly(1,4-butylene adipate-co-1,4-butylene terephthalate) and polylactide (PBAT/PLA) were encoded as the sequence of the appropriate amino acids in the oligopeptide (PEP) added to these polymers. The decoding of the recorded information was carried out using mass spectrometry technique as a new method of decoding, which enabled the successful retrieval and reading of the stored information. Furthermore, the properties of labelled (bio)degradable polymer films and stability during biodegradation of PLLA/PEP film under industrial composting conditions have been investigated. The labelled films exhibited good oligopeptide stability, allowing the recorded information to be retrieved from a green polymer/oligopeptide system before and after biodegradation. The MTT (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl-2H-tetrazolium bromide assay) study of the PLLA and PLLA/PBAT using the MRC-5 mammalian fibroblasts was presented for the first time.

The majority of problematic conditions resulting from dental implant treatment are inflammatory in character, but certain isolated occurrences of primary oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) have been discovered in the area of implants. The goal of this study was to examine whether there is a link between dental implants and the development of OSCC in patients who have a history of a potentially malignant lesion (PML) or malignancy. Using the keywords "carcinoma" AND "dental implants," a search was conducted in the MEDLINE (PubMed), National Center for Biotechnology Information, and Google Scholar databases for case reports and case series in which OSCC was discovered as a primary cancer in the region of dental implants. An initial search identified 260 articles, 247 of which were excluded based on study inclusion or exclusion criteria, leaving 13 articles chosen for inclusion and a total of 30 patients who developed primary oral cancer surrounding osseointegrated titanium-based dental implants. In the studies included in the present review, 22 (73%) of 30 patients with peri-implant cancer had a history of PML or carcinoma. There is no statistical evidence of a direct association between dental implants and OSCC in patients with a history of a PML or malignant lesion. There have been some case reports of OSCC in the region of dental implants in patients with a history of a PML or malignant lesion, but further studies are needed to prove a definitive relationship.

Background: Homemakers are the backbones of families, but in rural India, females suffer from many musculoskeletal problems due to excessive workload in their houses. The objective of the present study is to compare body composition parameters as predictors of low back pain (LBP) in nonworking rural homemakers of North India. Materials and Methods: The study was conducted among 296 homemakers from rural areas of Lucknow district in Uttar Pradesh. Details of LBP and body composition parameters (body mass index, body fat, visceral fat) were taken. Results: The prevalence of LBP among homemakers was found to be 15.54%. BMI was found to be a better predictor of LBP than body fat and visceral fat. The risk of LBP is 7.24 times higher in BMI ≥23 than in women with BMI <23. The risk of LBP is 3.67 times more in visceral fat % ≥10% than in women with visceral fat % <10%. Conclusion: Age, type of family, socioeconomic status income was identified as risk factors in this population. Maintaining an adequate BMI is essential for the prevention of LBP.

To achieve better-repurposed motifs, saccharin has been merged with biocompatible sugar molecules via a 1,2,3-triazole linker, and ten novel 1,2,3-triazole-appended saccharin glycoconjugates were developed in good yield by utilizing modular CuAAC click as regioselective triazole forming tool. The docking study indicated that the resulting hybrid molecules have an overall substantial interaction with the CAXII macromolecule. Moreover, the galactose triazolyl saccharin analogue 3h has a binding energy of -8.5 kcal/mol with 5 H-bonds, and xylosyl 1,2,3-triazolyl saccharin analogue 3d has a binding energy of -8.2 kcal/mol with 6 H-bond interactions and have exhibited the highest binding interaction with the macromolecule system.

Modification of an unsymmetric B,O,N-doped aromatic core with peripheral mesogenic units triggers self-assembly into a columnar hexagonal mesophase, which is stable between 22 and 144 °C. The columnar assembly is preserved in a glassy state below 22 °C. The B,O,N-doped mesogen displays narrowband sky-blue multiresonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) under diluted conditions and bright excimer emission in condensed phase. Our combined experimental and theoretical approach provides insight into the development of strongly aggregating liquid crystalline MR-TADF emitters.

BACKGROUND OBJECTIVES: In urban areas, upsurge in population has resulted in more breeding sites for malaria vectors, and hence this scenario potentially undermine malaria elimination and control programs. The change in land use due to urbanization may result in the presence and distribution of malaria vectors. Understanding potential malaria vectors is essential for current and future malaria transmission control strategies. This study investigated the effects of rapid urbanization on malaria vectors An. culicifacies s.l. and An. stephensi L. in Ghaziabad district. METHODS: Ghaziabad district which presents several levels of urbanization was selected for this study. Entomological investigations were conducted seasonally from 2014-2016 in the rural, urban, and peri-urban regions. Vector incrimination study was done using ELISA (confirmation by PCR) on suspected Anopheles vectors viz. An. culicifacies, An. stephensi, An. annularis and An. subpictus. RESULTS: An. culicifacies showed alteration in distribution influenced by rural and agricultural land whereas An. stephensi was found to be influenced by artificial habitats and population growth. INTERPRETATION CONCLUSION: The study also confirms the association between the abundance of malaria vectors and land use change.

BACKGROUND: Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) has considerable relevance in neural growth and differentiation. It has been evaluated as a biomarker for individuals with various psychiatric disorders such as substance-related disorders and psychotic disorders. OBJECTIVE: The present study explored differences in the levels of BDNF (in serum) among subjects using cannabis (with and without schizophrenia). METHODS: This cross-sectional observational study compared the serum BDNF level in male subjects aged 18-45 years. Four groups of 20 subjects each were included: individuals with tobacco use disorder only, patients having schizophrenia, patients with cannabis use disorder, and finally patients with comorbid cannabis use disorder and schizophrenia. RESULTS: The BDNF levels were found to be significantly different across the four groups. The BDNF levels in subjects with concurrent schizophrenia and cannabis use disorder were higher than each of the other three groups (cannabis use disorder, schizophrenia, and tobacco use disorder only). CONCLUSION: We find that BDNF may be higher when cannabis use disorder and schizophrenia co-occur, as compared to either of the conditions alone. The findings should be interpreted with caution due to the low sample size and potential confounders.

Gut microbiome dysbiosis contributes to the pathophysiology of both gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and its associated adverse outcomes in the woman and offspring. Even though GDM prevalence, complications, and outcomes vary among different ethnic groups, limited information is available about the influence of ethnicity on gut microbiome dysbiosis in pregnancies complicated by GDM. This pilot prospective cohort study examined the impact of ethnicity on gut dysbiosis in GDM among three Asian ethnic groups (Chinese, Malay, Indian) living in Singapore, and investigated the potential modulatory roles of diet and lifestyle modifications on gut microbiome post-GDM diagnosis. Women with GDM (n = 53) and without GDM (n = 16) were recruited. Fecal samples were collected at 24-28- and 36-40-weeks' gestation and analyzed by targeted 16S rRNA gene-based amplicon sequencing. Permutational multivariate analysis of variance (PERMANOVA) analysis was performed to evaluate differences between groups. Differentially abundant taxa were identified by DeSeq2 based analysis. Functional prediction was performed using the phylogenetic investigation of communities by reconstruction of unobserved states (PICRUSt2). Among women with GDM, gut microbiome from different ethnicities harbored common microbial features. However, among those without GDM, there was contrasting microbiome composition between ethnic groups. Microbial members such as Collinsella, Blautia, Ruminococcus, Ruminococcus gnavus, Ruminococcus torques, and Eubacterium hallii groups were differentially enriched (p < 0.05) in women with GDM compared to those without. Among women with GDM, no differences in alpha- and beta- diversity were observed when comparing 24-28 weeks' samples with 36-40 weeks' samples, a period covering intense dietary and lifestyle modification, suggesting an inability to modulate gut microbiota through classic GDM management. Women with GDM have a distinct gut microbiome profile which harbours common features across different Asian ethnic groups, consistent with the notion that specific microbes are involved in the pathogenesis of insulin resistance, pro-inflammatory conditions, and other metabolic dysregulation known to be present in GDM.

The SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2) virus and the resulting COVID-19 pandemic have had devastating and lasting impact on the global population. Although the main target of the disease is the respiratory tract, clinical outcomes, and research have also shown significant effects of infection on other organ systems. Of interest in this review is the effect of the virus on the cardiovascular system. Complications, including hyperinflammatory syndrome, myocarditis, and cardiac failure, have been documented in the context of COVID-19 infection. These complications ultimately contribute to worse patient outcomes, especially in patients with pre-existing conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, or cardiovascular disease (CVD). Importantly and interestingly, reports have demonstrated that COVID-19 also causes myocardial injury in adults without pre-existing conditions and contributes to systemic complications in pediatric populations, such as the development of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C). Although there is still a debate over the exact mechanisms by which such complications arise, understanding the potential paths by which the virus can influence the cardiovascular system to create an inflammatory environment may clarify how SARS-CoV-2 interacts with human physiology. In addition to describing the mechanisms of disease propagation and patient presentation, this review discusses the diagnostic findings and treatment strategies and the evolution of management for patients presenting with cardiovascular complications, focusing on disease treatment and prevention.

An increase in the consumption of carbohydrate-rich cereals over past few decades has led to increased metabolic disorders in population. This nutritional imbalance in diets may be corrected by substituting cereal grains with pseudocereals that are richer in high-quality proteins, dietary fibers, unsaturated fats, and bioactive compounds (e.g., polyphenols and phytosterols) as compared to cereal grains. These nutrients have been associated with numerous health benefits, such as hypolipidemic, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, anti-cancer, and hepatoprotective properties, and benefits against obesity and diabetes. In this review, the nutritional composition and health benefits of quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat are compared against wheat, maize, and rice. Subsequently, the processing treatments applied to quinoa, amaranth, and buckwheat and their applications into food products are discussed. This is relevant since there is substantial market potential for both pseudocereals and functional foods formulated with pseudocereals. Despite clear benefits, the current progress is slowed down by the fact that the cultivation of these pseudocereals is limited to its native regions. Therefore, to meet the global needs, it is imperative to support worldwide cultivation of these nutrient-rich pseudocereals.

CONTEXT: La2Mo2O9 is a potential electrolyte material for SOFC due to its higher oxygen conduction at high temperatures. However, La2Mo2O9 suffers from detrimental phase transition at high temperature from monoclinic α to cubic ß phase. This phase transition can be prevented by lowering the temperature. However, lowering the temperature reduces the ionic conductivity. Substitution of transition metal on Mo site is the best strategy for the suppression of phase transition. In the present work, the effect of substituting element on different sites has been investigated. From the result, it is observed that the band gap increases with concentration of Er. METHOD: For the assessment of mechanism behind the improved performance, the atomic insight is crucial. For that, we have employed ab initio DFT calculation. We have used PBE and grimme d3 dispersion correction for the accuracy of evaluated band gap and electrochemical stability. All DFT calculations have been performed using Quantum ESPRESSO pwscf code's and for the assessment of thermodynamical stability of La2Mo2O9 and the doped structures, an alternative descriptor, the global instability index (GII), which is based on the bond valance sum approach implemented in SoftBV was used. All the visualizations were done by XCrySDen and VESTA open source software.

Transcription and splicing of pre-messenger RNA are closely coordinated, but how this functional coupling is disrupted in human diseases remains unexplored. Using isogenic cell lines, patient samples, and a mutant mouse model, we investigated how cancer-associated mutations in SF3B1 alter transcription. We found that these mutations reduce the elongation rate of RNA polymerase II (RNAPII) along gene bodies and its density at promoters. The elongation defect results from disrupted pre-spliceosome assembly due to impaired protein-protein interactions of mutant SF3B1. The decreased promoter-proximal RNAPII density reduces both chromatin accessibility and H3K4me3 marks at promoters. Through an unbiased screen, we identified epigenetic factors in the Sin3/HDAC/H3K4me pathway, which, when modulated, reverse both transcription and chromatin changes. Our findings reveal how splicing factor mutant states behave functionally as epigenetic disorders through impaired transcription-related changes to the chromatin landscape. We also present a rationale for targeting the Sin3/HDAC complex as a therapeutic strategy.

Introduction: Perception of self is a primary source for fostering negative influences in an adolescent's life. This stage may increase the risk for various psychiatric disorders. Objectives: To assess the grade of anxiety and depression and to study their relationship with various factors of perception of self, among adolescent girls. Materials and Methods: School-going adolescent girls from two government schools at Lucknow were selected using a two-stage random sampling technique. A total of 200 participants were personally interviewed for their socio-demographic details, perception of self, and screened for symptoms of anxiety and depression. Results: Of the 200 school-going adolescent girls who participated in the study, 63.5% screened positive for the symptoms of anxiety and 73.0% for symptoms of depression. A total of 11.5% and 3.5% school-going adolescent girls had severe anxiety and major depression; severe severity, respectively. Both anxiety and depression among school-going adolescent girls were significantly associated with factors like possessing qualities that they are ashamed of (P = 0.005 and 0.011), body image dissatisfaction (P = 0.004 and 0.017), and getting suicidal thoughts in times of difficulties (P < 0.001). Conclusion: A fair number of adolescent girls had severe anxiety and major depression of severe severity. Therefore, adolescents must be screened for mental disorders from time to time and those at high risk must be identified.

The synthesis of phosphorodiamidate morpholino oligonucleotides (PMOs) incorporating single or double triazole rings in the backbone has been achieved via Cu(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). The synthetic approach implemented is fundamentally convergent, involving the ligation of a 5'-azide PMO fragment to a 3'-alkyne fragment both in solution and on solid support. To access the 3'-alkyne PMO fragment, we synthesized 3'-N-propargyl chlorophosphoramidate morpholino monomers for all four nucleobases. The resulting triazole-incorporated PMOs (TzPMOs) have exhibited comparable or improved binding affinity toward complementary deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)/ribonucleic acid (RNA) strands compared to its regular analogues. Finally, a full-length TzPMO was designed to target the Nanog gene, demonstrating almost identical hybridization properties when compared to its regular version. Circular dichroism studies revealed a B-type helical conformation for the duplexes formed by TzPMOs.

The ability of humans to perceive and differentiate kinesthetic sensory information significantly influences our daily activities and motor control. This study examines the impact of asynchronous bi-manual discrimination tasks compared to uni-manual discrimination tasks on kinesthetic perception. Our study aims to reveal the relationship between kinesthetic perception of haptic signals by examining perceptual thresholds in three different scenarios using (i) the dominant hand, (ii) the non-dominant hand, and (iii) both hands simultaneously to differentiate between two successive signals. Subjects exposed to force signals in these three situations conveyed their perceptions of alterations in signal magnitude after each trial. Subsequently, we applied psychometric functions to the collected responses to determine perceptual thresholds. Our results indicate a substantial difference in threshold values between bi-manual and uni-manual scenarios, with the bi-manual scenario exhibiting higher thresholds, indicating inferior perceptual ability when both hands are simultaneously utilized in two separate discrimination tasks. Furthermore, our investigation reveals distinct perception thresholds between the dominant and non-dominant hands, owing to differences in the perceptual capability of the two hands. These findings provide substantial insight into how the nature of tasks may alter kinesthetic perception, offering implications for the development of haptic interfaces in practical applications.

Medicinal herbs are being widely accepted as alternative remedies for preventing various diseases especially in India and other Asian countries. However, most plant-based herbal medicines are not yet being scientifically accepted worldwide. "Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.F. & Thomson", one of the most promising plant species of Tinospora known as "Giloy" or Guduchi that is used in several traditional medicines in treating diseases e.g., metabolic and immune disorders, diabetes, heart diseases, cancer, and infectious diseases, has been widely investigated. Varieties of bioactive phytochemical constituents isolated from the stem, root and whole plant of T. cordifolia have been identified. In the last two decades, the diverse pharmacological activities of T. cordifolia have been continuously studied. Due to its therapeutic efficacy in immune modulation, it could be effective in viral and other diseases treatment as well. A medicinal plant could be well-suited not only for the treatment of target site but also for boosting the body's immune system. As an alternate source of medication, medicinal herbs are continuously showing better compatibility with the human body with minimal side effects than other therapies. Keeping this in mind, the present review highlights the pharmacological potential of T. cordifolia against various diseases.
