RESUMEN

The paper is devoted to the study of the nodal surfaces of the wave functions for fermion systems. Using the quantum Monte Carlo method, implicit equations of nodal surfaces for some s-electron systems containing two-five electrons are numerically obtained. The obtained results are in agreement with the provisions of other researchers. An original method for constructing nodal surfaces is proposed, which is convenient for the implementation of quantum Monte Carlo.

RESUMEN

Patients with comorbid substance abuse problems who were admitted to a psychiatric unit of a general hospital over an 11-month period were offered treatment with auricular acupuncture. Subsequently and retrospectively, the medical records of these patients were examined to assess compliance, side effects, impact on course, and acceptance of discharge recommendations. Patient's continuation of treatment in destination programs was also followed. Seventy-seven patients were offered acupuncture: 30 patients refused or had four or fewer treatments (control group), and 47 had acupuncture five or more times (treatment group). The treatment group did significantly better than the control group as indicated by the following findings: compliance with psychiatric/substance abuse treatment on the unit was 75% in the treatment group vs. 20% in the control group, noncompliance or AMA discharge rate was 2% in the treatment group vs. 40% in the control group, acceptance of staff's discharge recommendations was 77% in the treatment group vs. 37% in the control group, and 58% of the treatment group patients remained in follow-up treatment for at least 4 months, vs. only 26% of the control group patients. Average inpatient length of stay was 22 days for the treatment group patients compared to 16 days for the control group patients. Side effects in the treated patients were negligible. Auricular acupuncture thus appears to be a safe and inexpensive treatment modality that is easily administered and produces significant results. Its wider application in substance abuse treatment appears warranted.

RESUMEN

The effect of severe hyperthermia on the circulatory function was studied in dogs. Arterial pressure was maintained at the normal level, cardiac output increased at the core temperature of about 40 degrees C. An abrupt fall of the arterial pressure and cardiac output was observed at the rectal temperature of about 41 degrees C. The results suggest that a decrease in the cardiac output during severe hyperthermia is due to the fall of the central venous pressure and to the increase of the vascular compliance.

RESUMEN

Vasopressin was shown to cause a concentration-dependent relaxation of human basilar [correction of bacillary] artery's smooth muscles. In old age, the reactivity of these muscles in decreased and tachyphylaxis to vasopressin disappeared. This seems to be connected with a decrease in the quantity of smooth muscle's V2-inhibitory receptors. Protein kinase C activation does not affect molecular mechanisms of vasopressin action on human basilar [correction of bacillary] artery's smooth muscles. The data obtained suggest vasopressin participation in regulation of human cerebral blood flow and a limitation of adaptive properties of brain vessels' smooth muscles in old age. These factors, apparently, play a role in development of the brain circulation pathology in old men.

RESUMEN

Modern views on the contraction and dilatation mechanisms of vessel smooth muscle cells are discussed. The data on main role of the cation-transport cell system function peculiarities in the primary arterial hypertension genesis, a relation cell hyperreactivity to those peculiarities and its genetical origin, are reported. It is supposed that the hereditary predisposition forms certain functional lability of cellular elements in different organism tissues, and, in consequence of that, the environmental influences can provoke the development of primary arterial hypertension.

RESUMEN

The sensitivity of the vessel smooth muscles to vasopressin and their contractile responses were obviously increased in hypertensive rats, whereas the vasopressin inhibitory effect and tachyphylaxis were decreased. These changes seem to be connected with the prevalence of V1-activating over V2-inhibitory vasopressin receptors in hypertensive rats' vessel smooth muscles. Administration of lithium oxybutyrate for 4 weeks normalized central hemodynamics and decreased the sensitivity to vasopressin. The findings suggest a possible role of the inositol pathway in transmission of hormonal signal (vasopressin) to hypertensive rats' vessel smooth muscles as well as participation of vasopressin in pathogenesis of arterial hypertension and the possibility of using lithium oxybutyrate for its correction.

RESUMEN

In this study, we conducted an investigation into the characteristics of hemodynamic reactions during electrical stimulation of the structures of the hypothalamus and during simultaneous stimulation of the sinus nerve and the hypothalamus in anesthetized cats. We also investigated the monosynaptic connections of the hypothalamus with the structures of the brain stem and spinal cord. The possible influence of the hypothalamus, following the activation of various descending pathways (both through the bulbar level of regulation and by-passing it), upon the efferent component of the regulation of blood circulation is discussed; a scheme of intracentral connections of the brain structures participating in the regulation of blood circulation is presented.

RESUMEN

Isopropylnoradrenaline (INA) included in liposomes caused positive inotropic and system depression effects in cats. Duration of the reaction increased by 3.5 times compared with the response to a free form of beta-adrenomimetic. It was shown that the liposome beta-adrenomimetic induced a cardiostimulating effect under blockade of adrenergic receptors and increased the arterial blood pressure in this condition. Administration of INA after liposomes increased the arterial blood pressure as well. The data obtained suggest that the specific character of adrenergic receptors can be altered with exogenous phospholipids.
