RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Previous studies demonstrate a link between irritability and suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) in youth samples. However, they have mostly assessed irritability in community samples and as a largely dispositional (i.e. trait-like) construct. Thus, it remains unclear to what extent links between irritability and STBs reflect within-person processes of elevated risk in clinically meaningful time periods. METHODS: The present study used clinical data from 689 adolescents aged 12-19 years attending a total of 6,128 visits at a specialty Intensive Outpatient Program for depressed and suicidal youth to examine patterns in weekly assessments of irritability and STBs throughout treatment, including associations among trends and fluctuations departing from these trends via multilevel structural equation modeling. Youth completed self-report measures of irritability, depression, and STBs weekly as part of standard IOP clinical care. RESULTS: Overall, two-thirds of variance in weekly irritable mood was accounted for by between-person differences and the remaining portion by weekly fluctuations. After controlling for depression, during weeks when youth were more irritable they experienced increased STBs. Rates of change in irritability and STBs tended to track together at early stages of treatment, but these effects were generally accounted for by depression severity. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that although changes in STBs are best accounted for by depression, irritability can be understood as a specific, proximal risk factor for youth STBs that exacerbates youth STBs in clinically informative timeframes above and beyond depression.

RESUMEN

Measurement-based care has demonstrable benefits, but significant implementation barriers slow dissemination in real-world clinical settings, especially youth behavioral health care. Here, we describe use of measurement-based care in a specialty clinic offering a continuum of outpatient care for suicidal youth. We characterize strategies used to facilitate measurement-based care in this population and ways in which challenges to implementation have been addressed. We examined adherence to measurement-based care procedures relative to treatment engagement data from electronic medical records, as well as data from clinicians regarding acceptability and utility of measurement-based care. Results suggest that measurement-based care is both feasible and acceptable for use with suicidal youth. Here we provide future directions in measurement-based care in this, and other, behavioral health settings.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between social media use and suicidal thoughts and behaviors among adolescents in the first 30 days of an intensive outpatient program (IOP) for depression and suicidality. METHOD: Participants included 100 adolescents who enrolled in an IOP for depression and suicidality and completed baseline measures of social media and weekly measures of depression and suicidal thoughts and behaviors at clinical visits over the next month. RESULTS: Lower levels of social media use (overall and messaging) were associated with a greater likelihood of having suicidal ideation with plan over the next 30 days. There was no effect on suicidal behavior. Multilevel modeling indicated no main effects of social media use on depression or average days of suicidal thoughts. However, individuals with lower levels of social media use maintained more depression symptoms and days with passive death wish across the first month of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Among adolescents at high risk for suicide, less engagement in social media may reflect social anhedonia or withdrawal, which may heighten risk for more severe suicidal ideation or impede initial treatment. Findings highlight the importance of considering social media as an additional context when assessing social dysfunction in treatment for depression and suicidality.

RESUMEN

We illustrate, experimentally and theoretically, a laser-based method to control the rotations of polyatomic molecules in 3D space. A linearly polarized nanosecond pulse strongly aligns the most polarizable axis of an asymmetric top molecule along its polarization axis while an orthogonally polarized, femtosecond pulse sets the molecules into controlled rotation about the aligned axis. As a result, strong three-dimensional (3D) alignment occurs shortly after the femtosecond pulse and is repeated periodically, reflecting coherent revolution about the molecular axis. Our method opens new directions for research in orientationally confined complex molecules.

RESUMEN

Recent theoretical studies with alkali atoms A* excited to high Rydberg states predicted the existence of ultra-long-range molecular bound states. Such excited dimers have large electric dipole moments which, in combination with their long radiative lifetimes, make them excellent candidates for manipulation in applications. This Letter reports on experimental investigations of the self-broadening of Rb principal series lines, which revealed multiple satellites in the line wings. The positions of the satellites agree quantitatively with theoretically predicted minima in the excited long-range Rydberg states of Rb2.

RESUMEN

The rotational revival structure of asymmetric top molecules, following irradiation by an intense picosecond laser pulse, is explored theoretically and experimentally. Numerically we solve nonperturbatively for the rotational dynamics of a general asymmetric top subject to a linearly polarized intense pulse, and analyze the dependence of the dynamical alignment on the field and system parameters. Experimentally we use time-resolved photofragment imaging to measure the alignment of two molecules with different asymmetry, iodobenzene, and iodopentafluorobenzene. Our numerical results explain the experimental observations and generalize them to other molecules. The rotational revival structure of asymmetric tops differs qualitatively from the intensively studied linear top case. Potentially it provides valuable structural information about molecules.

RESUMEN

To describe multiple interacting fragmentation continua, we develop a method in which the vibrational channel functions obey outgoing wave Siegert boundary conditions. This paper demonstrates the utility of the Siegert approach, which uses channel energy eigenvalues that possess a negative imaginary part. The electron scattering energy in each such channel is rotated upward, giving it an equal and opposite imaginary part. This permits a natural inclusion of vibrational continua without requiring them to appear as explicit channels in the scattering matrix. Calculations illustrate the application of this theory to photoionization, photodissociation, and dissociative recombination.
