RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to assess the relationship between dimensions of perfectionism and suicide ideation in a tertiary student population in Australia. METHOD: The methodology involved 405 students completing the General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) which includes a subset of questions which can be used to assess suicide ideation, and the Multidimensional Perfectionism Scale. RESULTS: The presence of suicide ideation was associated with higher scores on total perfectionism and two perfectionism dimensions, and total GHQ scores. There were significant differences between participants with high levels of perfectionism and participants with moderate to low levels of perfectionism on a measure of suicide ideation. Neither gender nor age were associated with differences in the scores, with results indicating high levels of perfectionism may indicate a vulnerability to suicide ideation. CONCLUSIONS: Perfectionism is a valued attribute in high-achieving populations. The question needs to be asked, however, at what cost? The findings indicate that high levels of perfectionism may be associated with an increased vulnerability to suicide ideation. Future research is needed to gain a better understanding of the complex interrelationship between personality and temperament, environmental factors and self-destructive behaviour.

RESUMEN

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) occurs most commonly on the trunk, affects all races, and often develops between the second and fifth decades of life. It is uncommon in childhood and is sometimes mistaken for a vascular lesion, as it often presents as a blue macule or small nodule. Review of the English literature revealed approximately 152 cases of DFSP developing before 16 years of age and only 19 claimed congenital cases. A case of congenital dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is presented with a literature review and discussion of congenital and childhood presentations of the tumor.

RESUMEN

Systemic contact dermatitis from the cashew nut shell oil resorcinol allergens cardol and anacardic acid is recognized clinically as a dermatitis with flexural accentuation, typically distributed on the extremities, groin, and buttocks, and occurring generally 1 to 3 days after ingestion of raw cashew nuts contaminated with allergenic oil. We report a case of systemic contact dermatitis to raw cashew nuts, an atypical and unexpected ingredient flavoring an imported pesto sauce. Plants with allergens that potentially cross-react with poison ivy and other Toxicodendrons, and the concepts of systemic contact dermatitis and hyposensitization are reviewed.

RESUMEN

Triethanolamine is used as an emulsifier in many topical preparations and is an infrequent cause of contact allergy. We report a case of a woman with a contact allergy to triethanolamine inadvertently discovered when she had a reaction to a triethanolamine-containing fluorescent marking pen that was used in patch testing. On further investigation, triethanolamine was found to be in several of her topical products.
