RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The study aimed to investigate the feasibility of a remote mindfulness based self-management intervention for individuals with type 2 diabetes. It is important to further our understanding of how to improve self-management to improve health outcomes and low levels of uptake to self-management courses. METHOD: 29 participants with type 2 diabetes were recruited from the University Hospital Coventry and Warwickshire NHS trust. Three groups of participants engaged with a remote mindfulness based self-management intervention, which were delivered sequentially. After each intervention was complete, patient feedback was retrieved and implemented into the following intervention. The quantitative analysis comprised of descriptive statistics, independent sample t-test, paired sample t-test and multiple regression analysis. A qualitative analysis was also conducted through reflexive thematic analysis (RTA) to understand participant's perspective on the intervention. RESULTS: There was a total of 17 who attended the course (59 %) and a total drop out of 12 participants over the three courses (41 %). The qualitative findings reported three main themes: (1) Eating to manage my emotions rather than my diabetes (2) Implementing mindfulness has helped me manage my emotions (3) Medication rather than self-management behaviours control my diabetes. The focus group feedback included participants' appreciation of the community aspect of the intervention and their perception that the current course was more interactive compared to previous interventions. In addition, participants highlighted the importance of offering the course at an earlier stage of diagnosis to provide further support at the beginning of their diabetes journey. No significant findings were reported for the independent sample t-test, paired sample t-test and multiple regression analysis. CONCLUSION: The qualitative findings suggested that the course was beneficial, especially in demonstrating how mindfulness could aid self-management for individuals living with type 2 diabetes. Further funding and trials are warranted to improve the quality of technology used and to assess impact on diabetes control and mental health.

Post-stroke fatigue (PSF) is a common symptom associated with disability and decreased quality of life. Distinction can be made between perceived fatigue and fatigability. The first aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of perceived fatigue and fatigability amongst patients with chronic stroke and to explore how these two parameters relate. The second aim was to study the relationship between modifiable factors (sleep disorders, anxiety, depression and activities of daily living) and fatigue in this population. Sixty-two patients with chronic stroke (> 6 months) were included. Perceived fatigue was evaluated using the Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS). Motor fatigability was assessed with the percent change in meters walked from first to last minute of the 6-min Walk Test and an isometric muscular fatigability test. Subjects also completed self-report questionnaires assessing anxiety and depression (Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-HADS), sleep quality (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index-PSQI) and activity limitations (ACTIVLIM-stroke). Seventy-one percent of participants presented PSF. There was no correlation between the FSS and motor fatigability. FSS significantly correlated with HADS-Anxiety (ρ = 0.53, P < 0.001), HADS-depression (ρ = 0.63, P < 0.001), PSQI (ρ = 0.51, P < 0.001) and ACTIVLIM (ρ = - 0.30, P < 0.05). A linear regression model showed that the HADS-Depression, the PSQI and the ACTIVLIM explained 46% of the variance of the FSS. A high proportion of chronic stroke patients presents PSF, with no relation between their fatigue and fatigability. Perceived fatigue is associated with potentially modifiable factors: anxious and depressive symptoms, poor sleep quality and activity limitations. Introduction: The enemy hypothesis postulates that gall traits protect galling insects against natural enemies. Galls show a huge range of sizes, colors and ornaments, which vary even intraspecifically. However, galling insects are targets of various organisms that attack them directly or indirectly. In this context, to consider only one gall trait to investigate gall structure acting against only one guild of enemies can conceal an understanding of the community-level interactions. Objective: Herein, we take these ideas into consideration to investigate the conspicuous galls induced by Palaeomystella oligophaga Becker and Adamski 2008 (Lepidoptera) on Macairea radula (Bonpl.) (Melastomataceae) as a model system. We characterize this system through categorization of the different enemy guilds present in the community. We identified them to the lowest taxonomic level possible and determined the kind of interaction responsible for galling insects' deaths. Considering the enemy hypothesis and the selection of secondary characteristics, we also aimed to determine which of the multiple gall traits influence the survival success of galling insects in a multi-enemy context. Methods: We inspected galls and characterized the enemy guilds affecting the galling insect and the mortality rates produced by each one of them. Next, we tested whether the distinct gall traits measured (parenchyma thickness, color, projections) promote galling insect survival with respect to each enemy. Results: The mortality induced by indirect enemies (organisms that interact with gall tissues and can interact secondarily with galling insect) was 47.3 %, being higher than that caused by parasitoids and predators (31.5 %). Despite the gall's structural complexity, live galling insects showed the smallest occurrence (21.2 %). Parenchyma thickness was negatively related to Calliephialtes parasitoids, Gelechiidae cecidophages and predation signals. Conclusions: We demonstrated that the attacks to gall tissues by the cecidophages represented the highest threat to P. oligophaga survival, being higher than the mortality caused by direct enemies. That is, the gall traits were not as efficient as supposed to protect the galling insect from the attack of natural enemies. Nevertheless, we also demonstrated that parenchyma thickness can be negatively related to some organisms, especially direct enemies. Other traits hypothesized as defensive (e.g. projections, coloration) may simply play no role.


Introducción: La hipótesis del enemigo postula que las características de la agalla protegen al agallero contra los enemigos naturales. Las agallas muestran una gran variedad de tamaños, colores y adornos, que varían incluso de forma intraespecífica. Sin embargo, los agalleros son objetivos de varios organismos que los atacan directa o indirectamente. En este contexto, considerar solo una característica para investigar la estructura de la agalla actúando contra un solo gremio de enemigos puede ocultar una comprensión de las interacciones a nivel comunitario. Objetivos: Para investigar las ideas presentadas usamos las agallas conspicuas inducidas por Palaeomystella oligophaga Becker y Adamski 2008 (Lepidoptera) en Macairea radula (Bonpl.) (Meslastomataceae) como sistema modelo. Describimos este sistema a través de la categorización de los diferentes gremios enemigos presentes en la comunidad. Los identificamos al nivel taxonómico más bajo posible y determinamos el tipo de interacción responsable de la muerte de los agalleros. Teniendo en cuenta la hipótesis del enemigo y la selección de características secundarias, también buscamos determinar cuáles de las múltiples caracteristicas de la agalla influyen en el éxito de supervivencia de los agalleros en un contexto de enemigos múltiples. Métodos: Inspeccionamos las agallas y caracterizamos los gremios enemigos que afectan al agallero y las tasas de mortalidad producidas por cada uno de ellos. Luego, probamos si las distintas caracteristicas de las agallas medidas (grosor del parénquima, color, proyecciones) promueven la supervivencia de los agalleros con respecto a cada enemigo. Resultados: La mortalidad indirecta inducida por los cecidofagos fue del 47.3 %, superior a la causada por los parasitoides y los depredadores (31.5 %). Apesar de la complejidad estructural de la agalla, los agalleros vivos mostraron la menor presencia (21.2 %). El grosor del parénquima se relacionó negativamente con los parasitoides de Calliephialtes, los cecidófagos de Gelechiidae y la depredación. Conclusiones: Demostramos que los ataques a los tejidos biliares por cecidófagos representaron la mayor amenaza para la supervivencia de P. oligophaga. Esto es interesante porque, de acuerdo con la hipótesis del enemigo, la estructura de las agallas debería proporcionar protección para los insectos agalleros en lugar de atraer a los insectos que se alimentan de la agalla misma. Sin embargo, también demostramos que el grosor del parénquima puede estar relacionado negativamente con algunos organismos, especialmente los enemigos directos. Otras caracteristicas hipotéticas como defensivas (por ejemplo, proyecciones, coloración) pueden simplemente no desempeñar ningún papel.

Peatlands contain one-third of the world's soil carbon (C). If destabilized, decomposition of this vast C bank could accelerate climate warming; however, the likelihood of this outcome remains unknown. Here, we examine peatland C stability through five years of whole-ecosystem warming and two years of elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations (eCO2). Warming exponentially increased methane (CH4) emissions and enhanced CH4 production rates throughout the entire soil profile; although surface CH4 production rates remain much greater than those at depth. Additionally, older deeper C sources played a larger role in decomposition following prolonged warming. Most troubling, decreases in CO2:CH4 ratios in gas production, porewater concentrations, and emissions, indicate that the peatland is becoming more methanogenic with warming. We observed limited evidence of eCO2 effects. Our results suggest that ecosystem responses are largely driven by surface peat, but that the vast C bank at depth in peatlands is responsive to prolonged warming.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterised pathologically by degeneration of the dopaminergic (DA) neurones of the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNpc) and the presence of α-synuclein containing Lewy body inclusions. Trichloroethylene (TCE) has been suggested as a potential environmental chemical that may contribute to the development of PD, via conversion to the neurotoxin, 1-Trichloromethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-ß-carboline (TaClo). We investigated the effect of an 8 week exposure to TCE or TaClo on wild type and, as an experimental model of PD, A30P mutant α-synuclein overexpressing mice using a combination of behaviour and pathology. TCE or TaClo exposure caused significant DA neuronal loss within the SNpc in both wild type and transgenic mice. Cell numbers were lower in A30P animals than wild type, however, no additive effect of TCE or TaClo exposure and A30P overexpression was found. TCE or TaClo did not appear to lead to acceleration of motor or cognitive deficits in either wild type or A30P mutant mice, potentially because of the modest reductions of DA neuronal number in the SNpc. Our results do however suggest that TCE exposure could be a possible factor in development of PD like changes following exposure.

Certain color patterns in insects show convergent evolution reflecting potentially important biological functions, for example, aposematism and mimicry. This phenomenon has been most frequently documented in Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, but has been less well investigated in Hymenoptera. It has long been recognized that many hymenopterans, especially scelionids (Platygastridae), show a recurring pattern of black head, orange/red mesosoma, and black metasoma (BOB coloration). However, the taxonomic distribution of this striking color pattern has never been documented across the entire order. The main objective of our research was to provide a preliminary tabulation of this color pattern in Hymenoptera, through examination of museum specimens and relevant literature. We included 11 variations of the typical BOB color pattern but did not include all possible variations. These color patterns were found in species belonging to 23 families of Hymenoptera, and was most frequently observed in scelionids, evaniids, and mutillids, but was relatively infrequent in Cynipoids, Diaprioids, Chalcidoids, and Apoids. The widespread occurrence of this color pattern in Hymenoptera strongly suggests convergent evolution and a potentially important function. The BOB color pattern was found in species from all biogeographic regions and within a species it was usually present in both sexes (with a few notable exceptions). In better studied tropical regions, such as Costa Rica, this color pattern was more common in species occurring at lower elevations (below 2,000 m). The biology of the tabulated taxa encompasses both ecto- and endoparasitoids, idiobionts and koinobionts, from a diversity of hosts, as well as phytophagous sawflies.

Peatlands contain one-third of soil carbon (C), mostly buried in deep, saturated anoxic zones (catotelm). The response of catotelm C to climate forcing is uncertain, because prior experiments have focused on surface warming. We show that deep peat heating of a 2 m-thick peat column results in an exponential increase in CH4 emissions. However, this response is due solely to surface processes and not degradation of catotelm peat. Incubations show that only the top 20-30 cm of peat from experimental plots have higher CH4 production rates at elevated temperatures. Radiocarbon analyses demonstrate that CH4 and CO2 are produced primarily from decomposition of surface-derived modern photosynthate, not catotelm C. There are no differences in microbial abundances, dissolved organic matter concentrations or degradative enzyme activities among treatments. These results suggest that although surface peat will respond to increasing temperature, the large reservoir of catotelm C is stable under current anoxic conditions.

Cleavage of eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4G (eIF4G) by enterovirus proteases during infection leads to the shutoff of cellular cap-dependent translation, but does not affect the initiation of cap-independent translation of mRNAs containing an internal ribosome entry site (IRES). Death-associated protein 5 (DAP5), a structural homolog of eIF4G, is a translation initiation factor specific for IRES-containing mRNAs. Coxsackievirus B3 (CVB3) is a positive single-stranded RNA virus and a primary causal agent of human myocarditis. Its RNA genome harbors an IRES within the 5'-untranslated region and is translated by a cap-independent, IRES-driven mechanism. Previously, we have shown that DAP5 is cleaved during CVB3 infection. However, the protease responsible for cleavage, cleavage site and effects on the translation of target genes during CVB3 infection have not been investigated. In the present study, we demonstrated that viral protease 2A but not 3C is responsible for DAP5 cleavage, generating 45- and 52-kDa N- (DAP5-N) and C-terminal (DAP5-C) fragments, respectively. By site-directed mutagenesis, we found that DAP5 is cleaved at amino acid G434. Upon cleavage, DAP5-N largely translocated to the nucleus at the later time points of infection, whereas the DAP5-C largely remained in the cytoplasm. Overexpression of these DAP5 truncates demonstrated that DAP5-N retained the capability of initiating IRES-driven translation of apoptosis-associated p53, but not the prosurvival Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) when compared with the full-length DAP5. Similarly, DAP5-N expression promoted CVB3 replication and progeny release; on the other hand, DAP5-C exerted a dominant-negative effect on cap-dependent translation. Taken together, viral protease 2A-mediated cleavage of DAP5 results in the production of two truncates that exert differential effects on protein translation of the IRES-containing genes, leading to enhanced host cell death.

Evidence indicates that Parkinson's disease (PD), in addition to having a genetic aetiology, has an environmental component that contributes to disease onset and progression. The exact nature of any environmental agent contributing to PD is unknown in most cases. Given its similarity to paraquat, an agrochemical removed from registration in the EU for its suspected potential to cause PD, we have investigated the in vitro capacity of the related herbicide Diquat to cause PD-like cell death. Diquat showed greater toxicity towards SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells and human midbrain neural cells than paraquat and also MPTP, which was independent of dopamine transporter-mediated uptake. Diquat caused cell death independently of caspase activation, potentially via RIP1 kinase, with only a minor contribution from apoptosis, which was accompanied by enhanced reactive oxygen species production in the absence of major inhibition of complex I of the mitochondrial respiratory chain. No changes in α-synuclein expression were observed following 24-h or 4-week exposure. Diquat may, therefore, kill neural tissue by programmed necrosis rather than apoptosis, reflecting the pathological changes seen following high-level exposure, although its ability to promote PD is unclear.

UNLABELLED: The case is a 34-year-old woman with long-standing type 1 diabetes mellitus with existing follow-up in the outpatient clinic at the Warwickshire Institute for the Study of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism, UHCW. She had maintained good glycaemic control and glycaemic stability with basal bolus regimen for many years. She had not developed any diabetes-related complications and had no other co-morbidities. Six months ago, she presented to A&E with sudden-onset, well-localised and severe pain in the right iliac fossa, just lateral to the para-umbilical area. Her biochemistry was normal. Ultrasound scan, however, revealed a right-sided ovarian cyst, which was thought to have caused pain to her. She was discharged from A&E with simple analgesia. On subsequent gynaecological follow-up 4 weeks later, her pain remained severe and examination revealed an exquisitely tender subcutaneous nodule at the same location measuring 2 cm in diameter. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan at the time revealed a 1 cm mass in the subcutaneous adipose tissue, which co-localised to her pain. The mass demonstrated a central fat signal surrounded by a peripheral ring: observations consistent with fat necrosis. There were other smaller subcutaneous nodules also observed in the left para-umbilical area. Subsequent surgical resection of the main area of fat necrosis was performed. The patient made an excellent recovery and her pain resolved post-operatively. Histology confirmed the presence of fat necrosis. Fat necrosis is a rare complication of s.c. insulin injection. This case illustrates the importance of considering this diagnosis in patients who inject insulin and develop localised injection-site pain. LEARNING POINTS: Fat necrosis is a rare complication of insulin injections that can manifest with severe, persistent and well-localised pain.Fat necrosis can masquerade as other pathologies causing diagnostic confusion.The imaging modality of choice for accurate diagnosis of fat necrosis is MRI.Histological confirmation of fat necrosis is important.Appropriate management of localised fat necrosis is surgical excision, with avoidance of further insulin injections into the affected area.

Radio frequency (RF) breakdown such as multipactor or ionization breakdown is a device-limiting phenomenon for on-orbit spacecraft used for communication, navigation, or other RF payloads. Ground testing is therefore part of the qualification process for all high power components used in these space systems. This paper illustrates a shut-down protection system to be incorporated into multipactor/ionization breakdown ground testing for susceptible RF devices. This 8 channel system allows simultaneous use of different diagnostic classes and different noise floors. With initiation of a breakdown event, diagnostic signals increase above a user-specified level, which then opens an RF switch to eliminate RF power from the high power amplifier. Examples of this system in use are shown for a typical setup, illustrating the reproducibility of breakdown threshold voltages and the lack of multipactor conditioning. This system can also be utilized to prevent excessive damage to RF components in tests with sensitive or flight hardware.

Because of the magnitude of land use currently occurring in tropical regions, the local loss of animal species due to habitat fragmentation has been widely studied, particularly in the case of vertebrates. Many invertebrate groups and the ichneumonid wasps in particular, however, have been poorly studied in this context, despite the fact that they are one of the most species-rich groups and play an important role as regulators of other insect populations. Here, we recorded the taxonomic composition of ichneumonid parasitoids and assessed their species richness, abundance, similarity, and dominance in the Los Tuxtlas tropical rain forest, Mexico. We compared two forest types: a continuous forest (640 ha) and a forest fragment (19 ha). We sampled ichneumonids using four malaise traps in both forest types during the dry (September-October) and rainy (March-April) seasons. A total of 104 individuals of Ichneumonidae belonging to 11 subfamilies, 18 genera, and 42 species were collected in the continuous forest and 11 subfamilies, 15 genera, and 24 species were collected in the forest fragment. Species richness, abundance, and diversity of ichneumonids were greater in the continuous forest than in the forest fragment. We did not detect differences between seasons. Species rank/abundance curves showed that the ichneumonid community between the forest types was different. Species similarity between forest types was low. The most dominant species in continuous forest was Neotheronia sp., whereas in the forest fragment, it was Orthocentrus sp. Changes in the ichneumonid wasp community may compromise important tropical ecosystem processes.

BACKGROUND: Cisplatin combined with a nonselective cyclooxygenase (cox) inhibitor has potent antitumor activity against transitional cell carcinoma (TCC) in dogs, but this treatment is limited by renal toxicosis. Cox-2 is expressed in TCC, but only in limited sites within the kidney. A cox-2 inhibitor could enhance the antitumor activity of cisplatin with potentially fewer adverse effects on the kidney. HYPOTHESIS: Cisplatin/cox-2 inhibitor treatment will have greater antitumor activity but no more renal toxicosis than cisplatin alone in dogs with TCC. ANIMALS: Forty-four dogs with naturally occurring urinary bladder TCC. METHODS: Dogs were randomized to receive cisplatin (60 mg/m(2) IV q21d), firocoxib (5 mg/kg PO q24h), or the combination. Tumor measurements were determined before and at 6-week intervals during treatment. Renal function was monitored by serum creatinine concentration, iohexol clearance, and urine specific gravity. Toxicoses were graded according to Veterinary Co-Operative Oncology Group (VCOG) criteria. RESULTS: The remission rate with cisplatin/firocoxib (57%) was significantly (P = .021) higher than that with cisplatin alone (13%). Renal and gastrointestinal toxicoses were common in dogs receiving cisplatin, but there were no significant differences between dogs receiving cisplatin or cisplatin/firocoxib. Firocoxib alone induced partial remission or stable disease in 20 and 33% of dogs, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Firocoxib significantly enhanced the antitumor activity of cisplatin resulting in partial remission in more than half of the cases. The toxicoses inherent to cisplatin, however, were noted in dogs receiving this combination. Firocoxib had antitumor effects as a single agent and can be considered a palliative treatment for dogs with TCC.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate biomechanical properties of the Iliopsoas and Achilles tendons in young African American (AA) and Caucasian (CC) men, and attempt to clarify whether the difference in Achilles tendon ruptures between AA and CC can be explained by differences in material properties. METHODS: Tissue from 12 young males (AA, n=6; CC, n=6) was obtained from routine forensic autopsies. Iliopsoas and Achilles tendon samples were obtained from cadavers that were age, height and weight matched. Tendon collagen fascicles were tested micromechanically in a Deben mechanical testing rig. RESULTS: Peak failure stress in Iliopsoas tendon fascicles was considerably higher (p<0.05) in AA (22.4 ± 7.2MPa) than CC (6.8 ± 2.1MPa) whereas peak strain did not differ (AA: 19.7 ± 5.2%, CC: 18.3 ± 3.5%). Likewise, Young's modulus was greater (p<0.05) in AA (165.3 ± 67.3MPa) than CC (63.6 ± 23.6MPa). In contrast, peak failure stress in Achilles tendon fascicles was similar (p>0.1) in AA (21.9 ± 9.9MPa) and CC (28.1 ± 9.8MPa), and peak strain did not differ (p>0.1) between AA (16.3 ± 3.5%) and CC (13.8 ± 4.4%). Young's modulus was slightly greater in CC (316.8 ± 110MPa) than AA (222.8 ± 84.6MPa), yet not significantly (p>0.1). CONCLUSIONS: These findings indicate that Iliopsoas tendon fascicles are stronger in young AA compared to CC males, which is suggested to reflect differences in muscle mass and force generating capacity. This could not be confirmed in Achilles tendon fascicles.

While the great majority of Ser/Thr protein kinases are basophilic or proline directed, a tiny minority is acidophilic. The most striking example of such "acidophilic" kinases is CK2, whose sites are specified by numerous acidic residues surrounding the target one. However PLK2 and PLK3 kinases recognize an acidic consensus similar to CK2 when tested on peptide libraries. Here we describe optimal buffer conditions for PLK2 and 3 kinase activity assays and tools such as using GTP as a phosphate donor and the specific inhibitors CX-4945 and BI 2536, useful to discriminate between acidic phosphosites generated either by CK2 or by PLK2/PLK3.

RESUMEN

The automated method for enumeration of Escherichia coli, TEMPO EC, in foods uses a dehydrated culture medium and enumeration card containing 48 wells across three different dilutions for the automatic determination of the most probable number (MPN). The alternative method was compared in a multilaboratory collaborative study to AOAC Official Method 966.24. Six food types were artificially contaminated with E. coli: raw ground beef, bagged lettuce, cooked chicken, pasteurized crabmeat, frozen green beans, and pasteurized whole milk. All foods were analyzed for E. coli counts by 11 collaborating laboratories throughout the United States. Test portions from the six food types each contaminated at four different contamination levels were evaluated. The study demonstrated that the TEMPO EC method is a reliable, automated assay for the enumeration of E. coli in foods.

INTRODUCTION AND METHODS: We carried out a systematic review of the literature on treatment of genu recurvatum in hemiparetic adult patients by searching the PubMed, Pedro, Trip Database and Science Direct databases. The following keywords were used: (recurvatum or hyperextension or knee) and (hemiplegia or hemiparesis). RESULTS: Nine articles met our selection criteria. Four assessed retraining methods (functional electric stimulation or electrogoniometric feedback), two assessed orthopaedic or neurosurgical treatments and three articles focused on orthoses. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: Even though all the various treatments produced encouraging results, most of the reviewed studies presented methodological limitations. Moreover, none of the selected articles suggested a treatment strategy which takes account of the various aetiologies in genu recurvatum. On the basis of some of the reviewed articles and our own clinical experience, we propose an aetiology-specific treatment strategy for genu recurvatum patients. In a broad patient population, this categorization could form the basis for testing the specificity of each treatment method as a function of the cause of genu recurvatum. This approach could help confirm the clinical indications and identify the most appropriate treatment for each patient.

* We used an inadvertent whole-ecosystem 14C label at a temperate forest in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, USA to develop a model (Radix1.0) of fine-root dynamics. Radix simulates two live-root pools, two dead-root pools, non-normally distributed root mortality turnover times, a stored carbon (C) pool, and seasonal growth and respiration patterns. * We applied Radix to analyze measurements from two root size classes (< 0.5 and 0.5-2.0 mm diameter) and three soil-depth increments (O horizon, 0-15 cm and 30-60 cm). * Predicted live-root turnover times were < 1 yr and approximately 10 yr for short- and long-lived pools, respectively. Dead-root pools had decomposition turnover times of approximately 2 yr and approximately 10 yr. Realistic characterization of C flows through fine roots requires a model with two live fine-root populations, two dead fine-root pools, and root respiration. These are the first fine-root turnover time estimates that take into account respiration, storage, seasonal growth patterns, and non-normal turnover time distributions. * The presence of a root population with decadal turnover times implies a lower amount of belowground net primary production used to grow fine-root tissue than is currently predicted by models with a single annual turnover pool.
