RESUMEN

The present study aimed to determine carcass characteristics, meat quality, nutrient profiles, and sensory characteristics of Mithun meat. Sixteen Mithun were selected and divided into four groups, MM-4 (male; n = 4; <4 years of age), MM-47 (male; n = 4; 4-7 years of age), MF-4 (female; n = 4; <4 years of age), MF-47 (female; n = 4; 4-7 years of age). Carcass characteristics showed that adult males (MM-47) have significantly higher (P < 0.05) live weight, carcass weight, and meat-to-bone ratio. Fat (%) was significantly higher (P < 0.05), and deboned meat (%) was lower in MF-4 and MF-47, while marginal differences were observed in bone (%), dressing percentage, and offal yield between groups. Visible marbling increased with age and varied from "slight" to "small" in all groups. Nutrient profiling revealed a significantly higher (P < 0.05) fat percentage and cholesterol in MF-4 and MF-47. Fatty acid profile, amino acid profile, water-soluble vitamins, and minerals content did not differ between groups. However, lysine and leucine (essential amino acids) and glutamic acid and aspartic acid (nonessential amino acids) were most abundant. Effect of age was significant (P < 0.05) on juiciness, tenderness, and connective tissue residue scores. In conclusion, results indicate mithun meat is nutrient-rich regardless of the animal's age or sex.

The increased prevalence of disease, mortality, and antibiotic resistance among aquatic microorganisms has renewed interest in non-conventional disease prevention and control approaches. Nanoparticles present several benefits in aquaculture and hold significant potential for controlling both human and animal infections. This study reports on the antibacterial properties of green copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) synthesized from the urine of Mithun (MU) (Bos frontalis). In addition, an array of analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV-visible spectroscopy (UV), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), were employed to investigate the synthesized MU-CuO nanoparticles. Aeromonas hydrophila and Aeromonas veronii, two bacterial fish pathogens known to cause severe infectious diseases in fish, were tested for their antibacterial efficacy against MU-CuO NPs. At 100 µg/mL, MU-CuO NPs exhibit enhanced antibacterial efficacy against two bacterial pathogens commonly found in fish. Applications in aquaculture may be looked at given that MU-CuO NPs showed greater antibacterial activity.

The current study aimed at genomic characterization and improved understanding of genetic diversity of two Indian mithun populations (both farm, 48 animals and field, 24 animals) using genome wide genotype data generated with Illumina BovineHD BeadChip. Eight additional populations of taurine cattle (Holstein and NDama), indicine cattle (Gir) and other evolutionarily closely related species (Bali cattle, Yak, Bison, Gaur and wild buffalo) were also included in this analysis (N = 137) for comparative purposes. Our results show that the genetic background of mithun populations was uniform with few possible signs of indicine admixture. In general, observed and expected heterozygosities were quite similar in these two populations. We also observed increased frequencies of small-sized runs of homozygosity (ROH) in the farm population compared to field mithuns. On the other hand, longer ROH were more frequent in field mithuns, which suggests recent founder effects and subsequent genetic drift due to close breeding in farmer herds. This represents the first study providing genetic evidence about the population structure and genomic diversity of Indian mithun. The information generated will be utilized for devising suitable breeding and conservation programme for mithun, an endangered bovine species in India.

RESUMEN

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a relatively rare disease affecting the reticuloendothelial system in the pediatric age group. It can affect bones, lung, liver, spleen, lymph nodes and skin. MR imaging is particularly informative in diagnosis and management of bone LCH. In this report, we present the initial and 23 months post-treatment MR images of a femoral LCH lesion in a 12-year-old child to describe the role of MRI in bone LCH.

A study was conducted to compare the nutrient utilization, growth, and rumen enzyme profile of mithun (Bos frontalis) and Tho-tho cattle (Bos indicus) reared in the same feeding and managemental conditions. For the purpose, male mithun (n = 8) and male Tho-tho cattle (n = 8) of 1.5 years age, selected from the farm of National Research Centre on Mithun, Nagaland, India, were fed on mixed-tree-leaves-based ration as per the requirement of NRC (2001) for cattle for 12 months. Average daily gain (ADG), average dry matter intake (DMI), and feed conversion ratio (FCR) for all animals were recorded. A metabolic trial was conducted at 6 months of the experiment to assess the digestibility coefficient of different nutrients and nutritive value of ration. At 12 months of the experiment, rumen liquor was collected from all animals and analyzed for rumen enzyme profiles, viz., carboxymethylcellulase, xylanase, α-amylase, ß-glucosidase, α-glucosidase, urease, and protease. It was found that ADG (507.8 g vs 392.8 g), DM intake (6.59 vs 5.85 kg/day) and DMI/W(0.75) (98.75 g vs 91.00 g/day), crude protein intake (780 vs 700 g/day), and total digestible nutrient intake (3.65 vs 3.32 kg/day) were higher (p < 0.05) in mithun than cattle. The nitrogen balance was higher and FCR was better (p < 0.05) in mithun compared with cattle. The digestibility coefficient of different nutrients was similar (p > 0.05) between the species. The microbial enzyme profiles of mithun and cattle were not different (p > 0.05). The better growth performance of mithun than cattle as found in the present study clearly indicates that the mithun has higher genetic potential for growth than Tho-tho cattle of north-eastern hilly region of India.
