RESUMEN

Tracheobronchial adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare malignancy. To the best of our knowledge, its enhancement pattern on multiphasic contrast-enhanced multidetector computed tomography has not been reported. Herein, we report the computed tomography findings of three consecutive cases of tracheobronchial adenoid cystic carcinoma. All lesions presented a gradual enhancement pattern on multiphasic contrast-enhanced computed tomography. We speculate that the gradual enhancement pattern on multiphasic contrast-enhanced computed tomography could potentially serve as a characteristic imaging feature and may therefore be a clue to diagnose tracheobronchial adenoid cystic carcinoma. RESUMEN

The previously reported gel and polymer actuators require external inputs, such as batteries, circuits, electronic circuits, etc., compared with autonomous motions produced by the living organisms. To realize the spontaneous motions, here, we propose to integrate a power supply, actuators, and control into a single-component self-oscillating hydrogel. We demonstrate self-actuating gel pumps driven by the oscillatory Belousov-Zhabotinsky (BZ) reaction without electronic components. We have developed the volume oscillation of gels synchronized with the BZ reaction (BZ gel). Since the self-actuating gel pumps are driven by chemo-mechanical energy from BZ gels, the self-actuating gel pumps don't require complex wiring designs, energy supply, and assembling. The mechanical work generated by BZ gels is extremely small. We formulated the thermodynamic cycle of BZ gels and maximized mechanical work. We found that pre-stretched BZ gel shows larger mechanical works. We physically separated the BZ gels and working fluid to create practical pumps. By using optimizing mechanical generated by BZ gels, we demonstrated the self-actuating gel pumps that transfer mechanical work through a stretchable elastomer membrane.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to clarify the effect of Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) infection on natural immunity in the bovine mammary gland and on the severity of clinical mastitis. We classified milk samples from clinical mastitic cows into BLV-positive (n=76) and BLV-negative (n=12). BLV-positive cows were further divided into cows with High BLV proviral load (H-PVL) (n=23) and Low BLV proviral load (L-PVL) (n=53). Severity of clinical mastitis was classified as MILD, MODERATE, or SEVERE. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed on the host factors and environmental factors with severity of clinical mastitis as the objective variable. BLV proviral load (PVL) and season at onset of mastitis showed significant correlation with the severity of clinical mastitis. Binary logistic regression analysis was performed on natural immunity factors lactoferrin and lingual antimicrobial peptide (LAP) concentration in milk, with PVL as the objective variable. Of these natural immunity factors, LAP concentration in milk showed significant correlation with PVL. The results of the present study suggested that PVL and season are associated with severity of clinical mastitis, and that the immune function in the mammary gland is decreased in cows with H-PVL compared to that in cows with L-PVL.

RESUMEN

This study investigated whether treatment with the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase inhibitor U0126 during in vitro maturation (IVM), which has previously been reported to improve oocyte developmental competence, is practical for use in calf production using ovum pick up (OPU)-derived oocytes. Two Japanese Black cows were repeatedly and simultaneously treated to stimulate follicular growth and were prepared for OPU. Cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) were collected from one cow using a collection medium containing 5 µM U0126 and were cultured in medium supplemented with the same concentration of U0126 for the first 2 hr of IVM; COCs from the other cow were used as controls without U0126 treatment. The cows were exchanged between the two groups at every sequential OPU (n=8). The number of oocytes developing to blastocysts in the U0126-treated group (39.1%, 34/87) was significantly higher than that in the control group (22.1%, 19/86). Eight blastocysts produced with U0126 treatment were transferred to recipients, and four normal calves were obtained. The results indicate that embryos develop efficiently from OPU-derived oocytes treated with U0126, and that these embryos may be of practical use in calf production.

RESUMEN

We compared the hair cortisol levels of lactating dairy cows in a cold- and a warm-temperate region out of four climatic zones in Japan. We simultaneously investigated the effects of calving number, lactation period and month of hair sampling. Hair of nine Holstein lactating cows chosen from each region (i.e. 18 cows per sampling) was sampled in March, June, September and December. Number of calvings (1, 2, ≥3) and lactation duration (early: <100, middle: 101-200, and late: >201 days) were balanced between regions. Cortisol was extracted from hair by methanol, and its level was determined with a cortisol immunoassay kit. A multi-way analysis of variance revealed that the effects of month of hair sampling (P < 0.001) and its combination with region (P < 0.05) were significant. In a multiple comparison test, significant differences (P < 0.01) in hair cortisol level (pg/mg of hair) were found between June (13.0 ± 1.0) and the other 3 months, and between September (1.6 ± 0.2) and December (4.5 ± 0.3). The rise in cortisol level from March to June was more intense in the cold-temperate region. These results demonstrate the necessity of considering seasonal variations in each climatic region when we use hair cortisol level as an indicator of stress.

RESUMEN

Epidermoid cyst of the ovary is a very rare tumor. There have been only 21 case reports of it previously. We describe the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance (MR) findings of 2 cases of ovarian epidermoid cyst. To our knowledge, this is the first report describing CT and MR findings of epidermoid cysts of the ovary, and ruptured epidermoid cyst of the ovary has never been reported.
