RESUMEN

Electrocatalytic nitrogen reduction reaction (NRR) is a green and highly efficient way to replace the industrial Haber-Bosch process. Herein, clusters consisting of three transition metal atoms loaded on C2N as NRR electrocatalysts are investigated using density functional theory (DFT). Meanwhile, Ca was introduced as a promoter and the role of Ca in NRR was investigated. It was found that Ca anchored to the catalyst can act as an electron donor and effectively promote the activation of N2 on M3. In both M3@C2N and M3Ca@C2N (M = Fe, Co, Ni), the limiting potential (UL) is less negative than that of the Ru(0001) surface and has the ability to suppress the competitive hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Among them, Fe3@C2N is suggested to be the most promising candidate for NRR with high thermal stability, strong N2 adsorption ability, low limiting potential, and good NRR selectivity. The concepts of trimetallic sites and alkaline earth metal promoters in this work provide theoretical guidance for the rational design of atomically active sites in electrocatalytic NRR.

Accelerating proton transfer has been demonstrated as key to boosting water oxidation on semiconductor photoanodes. Herein, we study proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) of water oxidation on five typical photoanodes [i.e., α-Fe2O3, BiVO4, TiO2, plasmonic Au/TiO2, and nickel-iron oxyhydroxide (Ni1-xFexOOH)-modified silicon (Si)] by combining the rate law analysis of H2O molecules with the H/D kinetic isotope effect (KIE) and operando spectroscopic studies. An unexpected and universal half-order kinetics is observed for the rate law analysis of H2O, referring to a sequential proton-electron transfer pathway, which is the rate-limiting factor that causes the sluggish water oxidation performance. Surface modification of the Ni1-xFexOOH electrocatalyst is observed to break this limitation and exhibits a normal first-order kinetics accompanied by much enhanced H/D KIE values, facilitating the turnover frequency of water oxidation by 1 order of magnitude. It is the first time that Ni1-xFexOOH is found to be a PCET modulator. The rate law analysis illustrates an effective strategy for modulating PCET kinetics of water oxidation on semiconductor surfaces.

OBJECTIVE: Dietary self-management is one key component to achieve optimal glycemic control. Advances in mobile health (mHealth) technology have reduced the burden of diabetes self-management; however, limited evidence has been known regarding the status of the current body of research using mHealth technology for dietary management for adults with type 2 diabetes. METHODS: Literature searches were conducted electronically using PubMed, CINAHL (EBSCO), Web of Science Core Collection, PsycINFO (Ovid), EMBASE (Ovid), and Scopus. Keywords and subject headings covered dietary management, type 2 diabetes, and mHealth. Inclusion criteria included studies that applied mHealth for dietary self-management for adults with type 2 diabetes and were published in English as full articles. RESULTS: This review (N = 15 studies) revealed heterogeneity of the mHealth-based dietary self-management or interventions and reported results related to physiological, dietary behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes. Twelve studies applied smartphone apps with varied functions for dietary management or intervention, while three studies applied continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) to guide dietary changes. Among 15 reviewed studies, only three of them were two-arm randomized clinical trial (RCT) with larger sample and 12-month study duration and 12 of them were pilot testing. Nine of 12 pilot studies showed improved HbA1c; most of them resulted in varied dietary changes; and few of them showed improved diabetes distress and depression. CONCLUSION: Our review provided evidence that the application of mHealth technology for dietary intervention for adults with type 2 diabetes is still in pilot testing. The preliminary effects are inconclusive on physiological, dietary behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes.
