RESUMEN

All-silicon terahertz absorbers have attracted considerable interest. We present a design and numerical study of an all-silicon polarization-insensitive terahertz metamaterial absorber. The meta-atoms of the metamaterial absorber are square silicon rings which can be viewed as gratings. By properly optimizing the structure of the meta-atom, we achieve a broadband absorptivity that is above 90% ranging from 0.77 THz to 2.53 THz, with a relative bandwidth of 106.7%. Impedance matching reduces the reflection of the terahertz waves and the (0, ±1)-order diffraction induce the strong absorption. The absorption of this absorber is insensitive to the polarization of the terahertz wave and has a large incident angle tolerance of up to 60 degrees. The all-silicon metamaterial absorber proposed here provides an effective way to obtain broadband absorption in the terahertz regime. Metamaterial absorbers have outstanding applications in terahertz communication and imaging.

RESUMEN

The objectives of this study were to remove heavy metals from wastewater through the biosorption method with modified biomass as an effective sorbent and to prepare metal/biomass composites with the same modified biomass as a direct template. Eggshell membrane (ESM) was selected and modified to adsorb heavy metals. Adsorption of metal ions on the modified ESM (MESM) might be attributed to electrostatic interaction, ion exchange and coordination effect with chelating ligands containing N and S on the surface of the MESM. The pH of the solution was a key factor affecting the adsorption. The Cu-Ag/MESM composites with uniform Cu-Ag NPs were prepared with MESM as matrices, and with Cu2+ and Ag+ adsorbed as metal sources. The Cu-Ag/MESM showed excellent catalytic performance in the reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in the aqueous phase. Because of the high stability of the Cu-Ag NPs supported on the macro-dimension supporter, Cu-Ag/MESM can be easily separated after the catalytic reaction and recycled.

RESUMEN

NF-kappaB pathway has been proven to be critical to survival of lung cancer cells, and many natural products from plants were shown to inhibit the activation of this pathway. In this study, we investigated the effects of two cardamonin analogs, 4,4'-dihydroxylchalcone (DHC) and 4,4'-dihydroxy-2'-methoxychalcone (DHMC), on survival of lung cancer cells and the involved mechanisms. MTT assay revealed that the two compounds potently decreased the survival of immortalized and primary lung cancer cells. DHC and DHMC were able to induce apoptosis in A549 and NCI-H460 cells. Immunoblotting, immunofluorescent staining, and luciferase reporter further demonstrated that the two compounds suppressed the activation of NF-kappaB pathway in lung cancer cells. PMA-mediated NF-kappaB reactivation abrogated the effect of DHC and DHMC on lung cancer cells. DHC and DHMC were also shown to suppress the growth of A549 xenograft in mice. Collectively, we verified two cardamonin analogs as novel compounds suppressing NF-kappaB signaling for lung cancer therapy.

RESUMEN

A sensitive and selective liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry was developed and validated for the simultaneous determination of three major lignans (podophyllotoxin, epipodophyllotoxin, and 4'-demethylpodophyllotoxin) in rat plasma using diphenhydramine as the internal standard. The analytes were detected using a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer that was equipped with an electrospray ionization source in the positive ion and selected reaction monitoring modes. The linearity of the calibration curve was good, with coefficients of determination (r(2) ) >0.9914 for all of the analytes. The developed method was successfully applied for the simultaneous determination of the three lignans in rat plasma following oral administration of Diphylleia sinensis extract to rats.
