RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of OSMF on the eustachian tube function and to correlate it with various grades of the disease. STUDY DESIGN: Twenty OSMF patients (40 ears) and 20 healthy controls (40 ears) were evaluated for eustachian tube function by eustachian tube function test, tympanometry and audiometry. RESULTS: The audiometric and tympanometric analysis showed no significant differences in hearing abilities of OSMF patients and controls and between various grades of OSMF, indicating no hearing impairment. However, eustachian tube function test revealed a statistically significant difference in eustachian tube function in OSMF patients and controls. Further, there was a significant increase in severity of dysfunction with increase in severity of disease. CONCLUSIONS: From the present study it is evident that the subjective function of Eustachian tube may be affected by disease process. But, probably the amount of deviation found in function of the eustachian tube is non contributing to cause a conductive hearing loss. Key words:Oral submucous fibrosis, eustachian tube function, tympanometry.

RESUMEN

The Present study was carried out to evaluate the morphology of soft palate in Oral Submucous Fibrosis (OSF) patients using digital lateral cephalogram. A total number of 70 patients were included in the study (Control group had 35 patients and Study group had 35 OSF patients) were evaluated for soft palate by digital lateral cephalogram. The anterio-posterior length and superior-inferior length of soft palate were measured. The morphology of soft palate was categorized as type 1, to type 6. Different types of soft palate were compared with stages of OSF. Among the Study group (35 patients) 62.9% had Stage 2 OSF. Leaf shaped (Type 1) soft palate was seen commonly in stage 2 OSF whereas butt shaped (Type 3) in stage 3 OSF. In the present study there was statistically significant difference in length (anterio-posterior) of Type 1 soft palate of OSF patients. In the present study as the OSF progressed to advanced stage there was gradual change from Type 1 and Type 2 variety of Soft palate to Type 3 and Type 6 variety of soft palate. The study observed that there was gradual reduction in the length of soft palate in anterior-posterior direction in OSF patients.

RESUMEN

Ectodermal dysplasias include a various group of inherited disorders which share primary defect in the development of two or more tissues of embryonic ectodermal origin. Though there are many subtypes, ectodermal dysplasias are mainly hidrotic ectodermal dysplasia and hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia, among which the most common variety is X linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia. We report a rare case of X linked hypohidrotic ectodermal dysplasia occurring in a family with various skin, hair and oral abnormalities.

RESUMEN

Brown tumour is a rare focal giant-cell lesion that arises as a direct result of the effect of parathyroid hormone on bone tissue in patients with hyperparathyroidism (HPT). The lesions localise in areas of intense bone resorption, and the bone defect becomes filled with fibroblastic tissue. It can affect the mandible, maxilla, clavicle, ribs and pelvic bones. Therefore, diagnosis requires a systemic investigation for lesion differentiation. The authors present a case of a 27-year-old woman, with a rare case of brown tumour of mandible due to HPT secondary to osteomalacia. The lesion showed a tendency to recur even after excision till her parathyroid levels became normal.

RESUMEN

Chondro-ectodermal dysplasia is a rare autosomal recessive disorder which affects the ectodermal, mesodermal and endodermal derivatives. There are numerous conditions reported under this title which include Ellis van Creveld syndrome. The oral findings include multiple gingivolabial frena, dental abnormality, malocclusion and hypodontia. The diagnosis of Ellis van Creveld syndrome is based on the presence of oral mucosal changes like notching of the lower alveolus, fusion of the upper lip and gingival mucosa; dental changes like oligodontia, conical shape of anterior teeth and occasional presence of neonatal teeth. The authors report a rare case of Ellis van Creveld syndrome occurring among two siblings with oral mucosal, dental and skeletal abnormalities.

RESUMEN

Non-Hodgkin's lymphoma belongs to a group of lymphoid neoplasia that is diverse in the manner of presentation, response to therapy and progress. The most common region for extranodal lymphoma is the gastrointestinal tract while for oral cavity buccal vestibule, posterior hard palate or gingiva is the common site. The maxilla is affected more commonly than the mandible. The oral picture being the sole manifestation highlights the importance of bearing this entity in the differential diagnosis of swelling in the jaws.

RESUMEN

A 15-year-old girl presented with a chief complaint of bleeding from her nose. She had noticed worms emerging from her right nostril. She had a continuous dull ache on the right side of her nose, spreading over the maxillary sinus area, and on the infra-orbital margin on the same side. She complained of difficulty breathing through her right nostril and a foul smell, which was associated with orbital oedema. Intra-oral examination revealed erythema of the soft palate on the same side, which was tender on palpation. Her condition was diagnosed as nasal myiasis with orbital and palatal extension. Nasal myiasis was treated by surgical removal of the maggots and with Ivermectin and local application of turpentine. The symptoms resolved and the dangers of orbital complications and penetration into the intracranial cavity were averted. The serious short-term complications of nasal myiasis were prevented by prompt treatment.
