Phenolic extract of Vitis vinifera grape pulp was prepared using ultrasonication at frequencies of 28, 40, and 28-40 kHz with a 1:10, 1:15, and 1:20 ratio of solid (grape pulp) to water. The 1:10 ratio and 40 kHz frequency were considered optimal conditions for the preparation of red grape pulp extract (RGPE). Then, RGPE was encapsulated within maltodextrin using a spray drying technique, and the produced powder was used in the gummy candy production. The results revealed that the phenolic content of the powder was almost constant during the storage time. The solubility of the powder decreased, whereas its moisture content increased during the 45-day storage period. The results of scanning electron microscopy showed that the produced microparticles had spherical shapes with a micron size. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction showed that RGPE was encapsulated in the structure of maltodextrin through the formation of hydrogen bonds, considering the amorphous structure of the powder. The antioxidant properties of the microencapsulated RGPE containing gummy candy were preserved. Sensory evaluation and colorimetric values of the enriched gummy candy had acceptable results compared to the control sample. In general, microencapsulation of RGPE within maltodextrin as a carrier using the spray drying technique and its application in gummy candy enrichment could be useful.

Background: Treatment response in High-grade Glioma (HGG) patients changes based on their genetic and biological characteristics. MiRNAs, as important regulators of drug and radiation resistance, and the Apparent Diffusion Coefficients (ADC) value of tumor can be used as a prognostic predictor for glioma. Objective: This study aimed to identify some of the pre-treatment individual patient features for predicting the treatment response in HGG patients. Material and Methods: In this prospective study, 18 HGG patients, who were candidated for chemo-radiation treatment, participated after informed consent of the patients. The investigated features were the expression level of miR-222 and miR-205 in plasma, the ADC value of tumor, Body Mass Index (BMI), and age. Treatment response was assessed, and Least Absolute Shrinkage and Selection Operator (LASSO) regression was used to obtain a model to predict the treatment response. Mann-Whitney U test was also applied to select the variables with a significant relationship with patients' treatment response. Results: The LASSO coefficients for miR-205, miR-222, tumor's mean ADC value, BMI, and age were 3.611, -1.683, 2.468, -0.184, and -0.024, respectively. Mann-Whitney U test results showed miR-205 and tumor's mean ADC significantly related to treatment response (P-value<0.05). Conclusion: The miR-205 expression level of the patient in plasma and tumor's mean ADC value has the potential for prognostic predictors in HGG.

Little is known about the quality of life of patients with anaphylaxis to Hymenoptera venom. The Vespid Allergy Quality of Life Questionnaire (VQLQ) is commonly used to assess the psychological burden of this condition. This study aimed to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Persian version of VQLQ. In this cross-sectional study, VQLQ was translated into Persian according to expert recommendations.  The final translated version of VQLQ was then administered to 115 patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy at an asthma and allergy clinic in Iran. More than half of the participants were between 20 and 40 years of age, and 60% were male. Fear, anxiety, and outdoor activities had the most significant impact on the quality of life of patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy. Additionally, quality of life was more affected in women than in men, while no correlation was found with age. Furthermore, the quality of life was affected by a history of acute anaphylactic shock due to Hymenoptera venom. The Persian version of VQLQ enables the measurement of quality of life in patients with Hymenoptera venom allergy in the Iranian population. The inclusion of VQLQ in the initial evaluation of these patients may potentially guide allergist in providing support for venom-specific immunotherapy.

The purpose of the current study was to examine transcriptomic-based profiling of differentially expressed innate immune genes between indigenous and commercial chickens. In order to compare the transcriptome profiles of the different chicken breeds, we extracted RNA from blood samples of the Isfahan indigenous chicken (as indigenous) and Ross broiler chicken (as commercial) breeds. RNA-Seq yielded totals of 36,763,939 and 31,545,002 reads for the indigenous and commercial breeds, respectively, with clean reads then aligned to the chicken reference genome (Galgal5). Overall, 1327 genes were significantly differentially expressed, of which 1013 genes were upregulated in the commercial versus the indigenous breed, while 314 were more highly expressed in the indigenous birds. Furthermore, our results demonstrated that the SPARC, ATP6V0D2, IL4I1, SMPDL3A, ADAM7, TMCC3, ULK2, MYO6, THG1L and IRG1 genes were the most significantly expressed genes in the commercial birds and the PAPPA, DUSP1, PSMD12, LHX8, IL8, TRPM2, GDAP1L1, FAM161A, ABCC2 and ASAH2 genes were the most significant in the indigenous chickens. Of notable finding in this study was that the high-level gene expressions of heat-shock proteins (HSPs) in the indigenous breeds could serve as a guideline for future genetic improvement. This study identified genes with breed-specific expression, and comparative transcriptome analysis helped understanding of the differences in underlying genetic mechanisms between commercial and local breeds. Therefore, the current results can be used to identify candidate genes for further breed improvement.

In this paper, the PO method with the array theory are used to formulate the RCS of a grounded multi-height dielectric surface which can be employed in the design and optimization of a metasurface consisting of dielectric tiles with different heights and permittivities. The proposed closed form relations can be used instead of full wave simulation to design an optimized dielectric grounded metasurface, properly. Finally, three different RCS reducer metasurfaces are designed and optimized with three different dielectric tiles by using the proposed analytical relations. The results prove that the proposed ground dielectric metasurface achieve more than 10 dB RCS reduction at 4.4-16.3 GHz (114.9%) frequency range. This result proves the accuracy and effectiveness of the proposed analytical method which can be used in the RCS reducer metasurfaces design.

Silk fibroin (SF), extracted from Bombyx mori, has unique physicochemical properties to achieve an efficient wound dressing. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO)/ZnO NPs/silk fibroin nanocomposite was made, and an innovative nanofiber of SF/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA)/RGO/ZnO NPs was ready with the electrospinning technique and successfully characterized. The results of MIC and OD analyses were used to investigate the synthesized materials' antibacterial effects and displayed that the synthesized materials could inhibit growth against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. However, both in vitro cytotoxicity (MTT) and scratch wound studies have shown that RGO/ZnO NPs and SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs are not only non-toxic to NIH 3T3 fibroblasts, but also can cause cell viability, cell proliferation, and cell migration. Furthermore, improving the synthesized nanofiber's structural properties in the presence of RGO and ZnO NPs has been confirmed by performing tensile strength, contact angle, and biodegradation analyses. Also, in a cell attachment analysis, fibroblast cells had migrated and expanded well in the nanofibrous structures. Moreover, in vivo assay, SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs nanofiber treated rats and has been shown significant healing activity and tissue regeneration compared with other treated groups. Therefore, this study suggests that SF/PVA/RGO/ZnO NPs nanofiber is a hopeful wound dressing for preventing bacteria growth and improving superficial wound repair.

At the forefront of biopharmaceutical industry, the messenger RNA (mRNA) technology offers a flexible and scalable platform to address the urgent need for world-wide immunization in pandemic situations. This strategic powerful platform has recently been used to immunize millions of people proving both of safety and highest level of clinical efficacy against infection with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). Here we provide preclinical report of COReNAPCIN®; a vaccine candidate against SARS-CoV-2 infection. COReNAPCIN® is a nucleoside modified mRNA-based vaccine formulated in lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) for encoding the full-length prefusion stabilized SARS-CoV-2 spike glycoprotein on the cell surface. Vaccination of C57BL/6 and BALB/c mice and rhesus macaque with COReNAPCIN® induced strong humoral responses with high titers of virus-binding and neutralizing antibodies. Upon vaccination, a robust SARS-CoV-2 specific cellular immunity was also observed in both mice and non-human primate models. Additionally, vaccination protected rhesus macaques from symptomatic SARS-CoV-2 infection and pathological damage to the lung upon challenging the animals with high viral loads of up to 2 × 108 live viral particles. Overall, our data provide supporting evidence for COReNAPCIN® as a potent vaccine candidate against SARS-CoV-2 infection for clinical studies.

Johne's disease caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) is a major concern in dairy industry. Since, the pathogenesis of the disease is not clearly known, it is necessary to develop an approach to discover molecular mechanisms behind this disease with high confidence. Biological studies often suffer from issues with reproducibility. Lack of a method to find stable modules in co-expression networks from different datasets related to Johne's disease motivated us to present a computational pipeline to identify non-preserved consensus modules. Two RNA-Seq datasets related to MAP infection were analyzed, and consensus modules were detected and were subjected to the preservation analysis. The non-preserved consensus modules in both datasets were determined as they are modules whose connectivity and density are affected by the disease. Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) and TF genes in the non-preserved consensus modules were identified to construct integrated networks of lncRNA-mRNA-TF. These networks were confirmed by protein-protein interactions (PPIs) networks. Also, the overlapped hub genes between two datasets were considered hub genes of the consensus modules. Out of 66 consensus modules, 21 modules were non-preserved consensus modules, which were common in both datasets and 619 hub genes were members of these modules. Moreover, 34 lncRNA and 152 TF genes were identified in 12 and 19 non-preserved consensus modules, respectively. The predicted PPIs in 17 non-preserved consensus modules were significant, and 283 hub genes were commonly identified in both co-expression and PPIs networks. Functional enrichment analysis revealed that eight out of 21 modules were significantly enriched for biological processes associated with Johne's disease including "inflammatory response," "interleukin-1-mediated signaling pathway", "type I interferon signaling pathway," "cytokine-mediated signaling pathway," "regulation of interferon-beta production," and "response to interferon-gamma." Moreover, some genes (hub mRNA, TF, and lncRNA) were introduced as potential candidates for Johne's disease pathogenesis such as TLR2, NFKB1, IRF1, ATF3, TREM1, CDH26, HMGB1, STAT1, ISG15, CASP3. This study expanded our knowledge of molecular mechanisms involved in Johne's disease, and the presented pipeline enabled us to achieve more valid results.

Nano-graphene oxide (NGO) is an engineered nanostructure that is used in various fields including biology, chemistry, medicine, and environmental protection. This kind of highly used nanomaterial (NM) is being released and accumulated gradually in nature and can have some adverse influences on living organisms including plants. Soybean as a cultivated plant with a high importance in food industry, but sensitive to stresses, was chosen in the present study to be examined in terms of proteomic, biochemical, and anatomical properties under the NGO stress. Accordingly, a 2-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-DE) approach was adopted for proteomic analysis of the NGO treated soybean roots, where significant changes were observed in the abundance of 48 proteins. MALDI TOF/TOF analysis revealed the upregulation of the proteins involved in the redox regulation in plants. Furthermore, anatomical examination of soybean roots under light microscopy showed that the NGO could enter into the root epidermis through the apoplastic pathway and accumulated in some parts of the root. With increasing NGO concentration, the diameter of the vascular apertures increased and then decreased at higher concentrations. To evaluate the toxicity of NGO, some of the growth parameters including fresh and dry weight, and height of the shoots, as well as some stress-related biochemical properties such as H2O2 production, antioxidant enzymes activity, and phenolics and flavonoids contents were measured. The results indicated that NGO could cause an oxidative stress, which can be considered a toxic effect evoking antioxidative and detoxification mechanisms in soybean.

Johne's disease is a chronic infection of ruminants that burdens dairy herds with a significant economic loss. The pathogenesis of the disease has not been revealed clearly due to its complex nature. In order to achieve deeper biological insights into molecular mechanisms involved in MAP infection resulting in Johne's disease, a system biology approach was used. As far as is known, this is the first study that considers lncRNAs, TFs, and mRNAs, simultaneously, to construct an integrated gene regulatory network involved in MAP infection. Weighted gene coexpression network analysis (WGCNA) and functional enrichment analysis were conducted to explore coexpression modules from which nonpreserved modules had altered connectivity patterns. After identification of hub and hub-hub genes as well as TFs and lncRNAs in the nonpreserved modules, integrated networks of lncRNA-mRNA-TF were constructed, and cis and trans targets of lncRNAs were identified. Both cis and trans targets of lncRNAs were found in eight nonpreserved modules. Twenty-one of 47 nonpreserved modules showed significant biological processes related to the immune system and MAP infection. Some of the MAP infection's related pathways in the most important nonpreserved modules comprise "positive regulation of cytokine-mediated signaling pathway," "negative regulation of leukocyte migration," "T-cell differentiation," "neutrophil activation," and "defense response." Furthermore, several genes were identified in these modules, including SLC11A1, MAPK8IP1, HMGCR, IFNGR1, CMPK2, CORO1A, IRF1, LDLR, BOLA-DMB, and BOLA-DMA, which are potentially associated with MAP pathogenesis. This study not only enhanced our knowledge of molecular mechanisms behind MAP infection but also highlighted several promising hub and hub-hub genes involved in macrophage-pathogen interaction.

Enhanced external counterpulsation (EECP) is believed to be a non-invasive treatment for coronary artery disease and angina. The aim of this study was to determine the safety and effectiveness of EECP in refractory angina patients through a systematic reviews and meta-analysis. We conducted a comprehensive search of the literature published on PubMed, Cochrane library, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Trip Database and Google Scholar databases using appropriate keywords and specific strategy with no time limit. Having selected and screened the studies based on the defined inclusion and exclusion criteria and evaluating their quality based on the Cochrane checklist. For the meta-analysis,the Mantel-Haenszel method or the generic Inverse Variance was used. Analyses were done with Review Manager 5.2 software. A number of 299 studies were initially reviewed and finally, seventeen studies were included in the meta-analysis based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Also, thirteen outcomes were analyzed and the results of meta-analysis in twelve outcomes including (Systolic Blood Pressure (7 studies), Diastolic Blood Pressure (7 studies), Pulse Pressure (4 studies), Mean Arterial Pressures (4 studies), Heart Rate (6 studies), Angina episodes (7 studies), Walking distance (2 studies),Canadian Cardiovascular Society classification (6 studies), Flow-Mediated Dilation (3 studies), Daily Nitrate Usage (4 studies), Exercise Treadmill Test-Time (2 studies), ST-segment depression (2 studies)demonstrated a significant clinical advantage in the EECP treatment effectiveness in patients with angina. No significant difference was observed regarding EECP usefulness (P = 0.18) in the outcome of brachial artery diameter (2 studies). Based on the meta-analysis, the results indicate the safety and effectiveness of EECP in patients with angina pectoris and indicate the usefulness of this treatment in these patients. In general, the authors believe that the general conclusion in this regard requires some studies with a large sample size and a control group assignment.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder, which causes wide range of neurological and psychiatric symptoms. Several studies demonstrated structural and functional brain alterations using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) techniques. Recently, diffusion-based brain MRI studies in patients with OSA showed changes in diffusion measures that represent various impairments of white matter (WM) integrity. The various finding may be due to diffusion indices employed for detection of neural impairment at the microstructural level, phase of the disease and the goals of studies. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to identify a common abnormal WM pattern across the previous studies. METHODS: We reviewed related literature in EMBASE, Scopus and PubMed databases and identified 13 studies that meet our selection criteria. RESULTS: The current data pointed to WM integrity changes in corpus callosum, cingulate cortex, corticospinal tract, insular cortex, basal ganglia, and limbic sites. These regions mainly contribute in mood, autonomic and cardiovascular regulation. CONCLUSION: Widespread use of diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) parameters provides insight into the pathophysiology of OSA, stage of the disease and planning appropriate treatments in future.

Four-and-a-half LIM domain protein 2 (FHL2) is an adaptor molecule regulating various cellular processes, including signal transduction, transcription, and cell survival. Although involved in inflammation and immune responses, its role in the germinal center reaction and B cell maturation remains unknown. We found that FHL2-/- mouse spleens displayed enlarged follicles with more B cells. When a T cell-dependent immune response was elicited using SRBC, FHL2-/- germinal center area was enhanced 2-fold compared with wild type (WT), concomitant with expanded dark zones. Nevertheless, the SRBC-induced rise in spleen IgG1 expression, and plasma IgG1 levels observed in WT were absent in FHL2-/- mice, and circulating plasma cells were also reduced in FHL2-/- This could be explained by deficient upregulation of spleen activation-induced cytidine deaminase mRNA. Interestingly, FHL2-/- B cells successfully underwent class-switch recombination in vitro, and both activation-induced cytidine deaminase induction and IgG1 response to SRBC were equivalent in B cell-deficient µMT mice transplanted with WT or FHL2-/- bone marrow, suggesting that the defects observed in FHL2-/- mice were not B cell intrinsic. However, spleen lysates from FHL2-/- mice revealed a disturbed spleen microenvironment, with reduced CXCL12 and CXCL13 levels compared with WT. Our data suggest that spleen FHL2 expression is essential for a normal germinal center reaction and proper induction of class-switch recombination in response to a T cell-dependent Ag, leading to the emergence of Ab producing plasma cells. This could be due to the regulation of spleen cytokine production by FHL2.

OBJECTIVES: Family caregivers face numerous challenges in taking care of their family members with epilepsy. The empowerment of this group of people, who can be described as forgotten patients, should always be considered through supportive interventions; therefore, this study investigated the effect of a family-centered intervention program on stress, anxiety, and depression among family caregivers of patients with epilepsy. METHODS: In 2017, a trial was conducted in Iran among subjects selected by the convenience sampling method and randomly assigned to two groups: intervention and control. After five sessions per week over a four-week period, the intervention- and control-group data were collected using the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS) in three stages: before, immediately after, and two months after the intervention. Data were analyzed with Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) software using descriptive and analytical statistics, an independent t-test, and repeated measures Analysis of variance (ANOVA). RESULTS: In this study, the family caregivers included 61.3% women and 38.7% men, with a mean age of 37.5 years. The findings showed no significant differences in the mean scores of stress (p = 0.93), anxiety (p = 0.91), and depression (p = 0.56) before the interventional program between the intervention and control groups, but these differences were statistically significant in the mean score of stress (p = 0.003) in the immediately after the interventional program, whereas the mean scores of depression were not decreased significantly (p = 0.3). Two months after the interventional program the mean scores of stress (p = 0.001) and anxiety (p = 0.001) were significantly decreased in the intervention group, but the mean score of depression was not decreased significantly (p = 0.09). CONCLUSION: The results suggested that a family-centered intervention program reduced the stress, anxiety, and depression of caregivers because of feasibility, simplicity, and utility of intervention. This program was focused on psychological issues of caregivers, and an emphasis on their empowerment helped them in managing their problems in the caregiving situation and achieved greater psychological potency in the caring process.

PURPOSE: This RCT study investigates the effects of a self-management program on clinical status indexes of COPD patients. DESIGN: In this study, 50 COPD patients referred to the respiratory clinic participated. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to control and intervention groups. The control group received standard care, and the intervention group received standard care plus the self-management program. Patients were assessed by spirometry, Modified Borg scale, and 6-minute walking test at the baseline and the end of 12-weeks. Paired t-test, independent t-test, and chi-square were used to analyze variables. FINDINGS: No significant difference was noted in the spirometry indexes mean in the two groups; however, significant differences were noted in dyspnea and exercise tolerance at the end. CONCLUSION/CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Using the 5A model can lead to increased exercise tolerance and decreased dyspnea in COPD patients. Therefore, this self-management program is recommended as an effective way to improve their functional status.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) as a chronic recurrent disorder is characterized by mucosal immune response dysregulation, which is more prevalent in the youth. Adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) are the multipotent cells that can be effective in immune response regulation via cell-cell interaction and their secretions. In this study, the effects of ADMSCs and mesenchymal stem cell-conditioned medium (MSC-CM) were evaluated on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis in mice. Chronic colitis was induced in female C57BL/6 mice using 2% DSS in drinking water for three cycles; there were 4 days of DSS-water administration that was followed by 7 days of DSS-free water, in a cycle. ADMSCs, 106 cells per mouse, were injected intraperitoneally (IP), whereas the MSC-CM injection was also performed six times from the last day of DSS in Cycle 1. Clinical symptoms were recorded daily. The colon pathological changes, cytokine levels, and regulatory T (Treg) cell percentages were then analyzed. After receiving ADMSCs and MSC-CM in colitis mice, the clinical symptoms and disease activity index were improved and the survival rate was increased. The histopathological examination also showed tissue healing in comparison with the nontreated group. In addition, the increased level of transforming growth factor beta, increased percentage of Treg cells, increased level of interleukin (IL)-10, and decreased level of IL-17 were observed after the treatment. This study showed the regulatory effects of ADMSCs and MSC-CM on inflammatory responses. Therefore, the use of ADMSCs and MSC-CM can be introduced as a new and effective therapeutic approach for patients with colitis.

Cells mobilized from the bone marrow can contribute to endothelial regeneration and repair. Nevertheless, cardiovascular diseases are associated with diminished numbers and function of these cells, attenuating their healing potential. Gene transfer of endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) can restore the activity of circulating cells. Furthermore, estrogen accelerates the reendothelialization capacity of early outgrowth cells (EOCs). We hypothesized that overexpressing eNOS alone or in combination with estrogen stimulation in EOCs would potentiate the beneficial effects of these cells in regulating smooth muscle cell (SMC) function. Native human EOCs did not have any effect on human coronary artery SMC (hCASMC) proliferation or migration. Transfecting EOCs with a human eNOS plasmid and/or stimulating with 17ß-estradiol (E2) increased NO production 3-fold and enhanced EOC survival. Moreover, in co-culture studies, eNOS overexpressing or E2-stimulated EOCs reduced hCASMC migration (by 23% and 56% respectively), vs. control EOCs. These effects do not implicate ERK1/2 or focal adhesion kinases. Nevertheless, NOS-EOCs had no effect on hCASMC proliferation. These results suggest that overexpressing or activating eNOS in EOCs increases their survival and enhances their capacity to regulate SMC migration through paracrine effects. These data elucidate how eNOS overexpression or activation in EOCs can prevent vascular remodeling.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune-inflammatory disorder that results in inflammatory responses in individuals who are genetically susceptible. Uncontrolled inflammation in Crohn's disease (CD) or Ulcerative colitis (UC) affects the patient quality of life. Current therapies are not completely effective while cell therapy, especially the treatment with mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) absorb lots of attention due to its immunomodulatory properties. So, we examined the effects of mesenchymal stem cells-conditioned medium (MSC-CM) in the experimental model of acute colitis. MATERIAL AND METHOD: MSC-CM was isolated from C57Bl/6 male mice and stored. The acute colitis induction in C57BL/6 mice was performed by dissolving dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) in drinking water and then CM injected intraperitoneally. During the study body weight changes, bleeding, stool consistency, disease activity index (DAI), mortality rate, weight and length of the colon and histopathological analysis were recorded as well as changes in the percentage of Treg cells. The level of IL-17, IL-10, and TGF-ß were measured, too. Data were reported as mean±SD and analyzed by One-Way ANOVA test. RESULTS: Based on the results it is recognized CM inhibited the weight loss and bleeding and improved fecal consistency and DAI. Macroscopic examination of the colon showed that after infusion, colon inflammation was reduced and histopathological analysis showed a decrease in mucosal degeneration. The percentage of Treg cells, secretion of IL-10 and TGF-ß was increased while the IL-17 level was reduced. CONCLUSION: This study showed that mesenchymal stem cell secretion with immunomodulatory properties has the potential to reduce inflammatory responses.

Excavations conducted by a Bulgarian-French team at Kozarnika Cave (Balkans, Bulgaria) during several seasons yielded a long Paleolithic archaeological sequence and led to the discovery of important faunal, lithic, and human samples. This paper aims to describe the unpublished radius shaft of an infant who died approximately before the sixth month postnatal that was recovered from layer 10b, which contained East Balkan Levallois Mousterian with bifacial leaf points. The layer was dated between 130 and 200 ka (large mammals biochronology) and between 128 ± 13 ka and 183 ± 14 ka (OSL), i.e. OIS6. Here we show that, given the scarcity of Middle Pleistocene infant remains in general, and Middle Paleolithic human remains from this part of Eastern Europe in particular, the study of the Kozarnika specimen is of special interest. We discuss its place in the Middle Pleistocene European hominine record and substantiate the hypothesis of early Neanderthal presence in the eastern Balkans.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have received much attention because of their enormous potentials in many fields such as magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH). The goal of hyperthermia is to increase the temperature of malignant cells to destroy them without any lethal effect on normal tissues. To investigate the effectiveness of cancer therapy by magnetic fluid hyperthermia, Fe0.5Zn0.5Fe2O4 nanoparticles (FNPs) were used to undergo external magnetic field (f=515 kHz, H=100 G) in mice bearing implanted tumor. METHODS: FNPs were synthesized via precipitation and characterized using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer, and Fourier transform infrared. For in vivo study, the mice bearing implanted tumor were divided into four groups (two mice per group), namely, control group, AMF group, MNPs group, and MNPs&AMF group. After 24 hours, the mice were sacrificed and each tumor specimen was prepared for histological analyses. The necrotic surface area was estimated by using graticule (Olympus, Japan) on tumor slides. RESULTS: The mean diameter of FNPs was estimated around 9 nm by TEM image and M versus H curve indicates that this particle is among superparamagnetic materials. According to histological analyses, no significant difference in necrosis extent was observed among the four groups. CONCLUSION: FNPs are biocompatible and have a good size for biomedical applications. However, for MFH approach, larger diameters especially in the range of ferromagnetic particles due to hysteresis loss can induce efficient heat in the target region.
