BACKGROUND: Considering the extensive use of bleaching agents and the occurrence of side effects such as enamel demineralization, this study aimed to assess the enamel changes of bleached teeth following the experimental application of chitosan-bioactive glass (CH-BG). METHODS: In this in vitro study, CH-BG (containing 66% BG) was synthesized and characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Thirty sound human premolars were bleached with 40% hydrogen peroxide, and the weight% of calcium and phosphorus elements of the buccal enamel surface was quantified before and after bleaching by scanning electron microscopy/ energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM, EDX). Depending on the surface treatment of the enamel surface, the specimens were divided into three groups (n = 10): control (no treatment), MI Paste (MI), and CH-BG. Then the specimens were stored in artificial saliva for 14 days. The SEM/EDX analyses were performed again on the enamel surface. Data were analyzed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test and a p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: In all groups, the weight% of calcium and phosphorus elements of enamel decreased after bleaching; this reduction was significant for phosphorus (p < 0.05) and insignificant for calcium (p > 0.05). After 14 days of remineralization, the weight% of both calcium and phosphorus elements was significantly higher compared to their bleached counterparts in both MI and CH-BG groups (p < 0.05). Following the remineralization process, the difference between MI and CH-BG groups was not significant (p > 0.05) but both had a significant difference with the control group in this regard (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The synthesized CH-BG compound showed an efficacy comparable to that of MI Paste for enamel remineralization of bleached teeth.

Objectives: The positive effects of strontium on dental and skeletal remineralization have been confirmed in the literature. This study aimed to assess the properties of a calcium silicate cement (CSC) containing a sintered strontium silicate phase. Materials and Methods: The calcium silicate and strontium silicate phases were synthesized by the sol-gel technique. Strontium silicate powder in 0 (CSC), 10 (CSC/10Sr), 20 (CSC/20Sr), and 30 (CSC/30Sr) weight percentages was mixed with calcium silicate powder. Calcium chloride was used in the liquid phase. X-ray diffraction (XRD) of specimens was conducted before and after hydration. The setting time and compressive strength were assessed at 1 and 7 days after setting. The set discs of the aforementioned groups were immersed in the simulated body fluid (SBF) for 1 and 7 days. The ion release profile was evaluated by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). Biomineralization on the specimen surface was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). Data were analyzed by the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, one-way and mixed ANOVA, Levene's test, and LSD post hoc test (P < 0.05). Results: Except for an increasement in the peak intensity of hydrated specimens, XRD revealed no other difference in the crystalline phases of hydrated and nonhydrated specimens. The compressive strength was not significantly different at 1 and 7 days in any group (P > 0.05). The setting time significantly decreased by an increase in percentage of strontium (P < 0.05). Release of Ca and Si ions significantly decreased by an increase in percentage of strontium (P < 0.05). SEM/EDS showed the formation of calcium phosphate deposits at 1 and 7 days. Conclusion: Incorporation of 10-30 wt% sintered strontium silicate phase as premixed in CSC can significantly decrease the setting time without compromising the compressive strength or biomineralization process of the cement.

Introduction: This study aimed to assess the effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT) on the pushout bond strength (PBS) of resin-based and calcium silicate-based endodontic sealers. Methods: Forty single-canal teeth were assigned to four groups. After root canal preparation by the crown-down technique and smear layer removal, groups 1 and 2 served as the control group, and groups 3 and 4 underwent PDT by using a low-level diode laser as the light source and methylene blue as the photosensitizer (MB). The root canals in groups 1 and 3 were filled with AH26 sealer while the root canals in groups 2 and 4 were filled with Endoseal TCS. The samples were sectioned at 4, 8, and 12 mm from the apex tip (1mm thick slices). The PBS test was performed, and the mode of failure was determined in the coronal, middle, and apical thirds. The data were analyzed by the Kruskal-Wallis, Friedman, and Dunn tests. Results: No significant difference was noted in the PBS of resin-based and calcium silicate-based sealers in the apical, middle, or coronal thirds in the application of PDT (P>0.05). The PBS of AH26 was significantly higher than that of Endoseal TCS (P<0.05). Cohesive failure was the dominant mode of failure in the AH26 groups, while mixed failure was the dominant failure mode in the Endoseal TCS groups. Conclusion: PDT had no significant effect on the PBS of resin-based and calcium silicate-based sealers.

This study aimed to synthesize and characterize a novel dental pulp capping cement containing bioactive glass (BG)/zinc oxide modified with an organic resin. BG (45S5) with or without ZnO (Zn) and hemaphosphate (HP) combined with a liquid consisting of polyacrylic and itaconic acids (AA) were synthesized and the structural, physical, and mechanical properties were assessed. Hydroxyapatite formation was evaluated by immersion in simulated body fluid. Biological analysis including methyl thiazolyl tetrazolium assay, alizarin red staining, alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, and gene expression of odontogenic markers were performed to evaluate the cytotoxic effect and biomineralization potential of the cements on human dental pulp stem cells (hDPSCs). A commercial mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) served as control. The highest compressive strength value and the shortest setting time were belonged to the BG + HP + AA and BG + AA groups, respectively. The shear bond strength to dentin was the highest for the BG + HP + AA cement. Scanning electron microscope showed only scarce deposits of calcium phosphate formation on the surface of the synthesized cements. BG + HP + AA and BG + HP + Zn + AA groups had significantly lower cytotoxicity than MTA. The mineralization potential of hDPSCs after stimulation by the novel cements increased. Quantitative reverse-transcription-polymerase chain reaction showed higher odontogenic marker expression in hDPSCs exposed to the BG + HP + Zn + AA cement compared to other synthesized cements, although it was higher in MTA group. Based on the obtained results, the novel synthesized cements can be used as appropriate capping agents in the treatment of dental pulp.

INTRODUCTION: Developments in dental materials, CAD/CAM technologies and adhesive dentistry have improved the application of conservative restorations such as endocrowns and onlays. Among ceramics, zirconia has properties such as high strength, transformation toughening, chemical and structural durability, and biocompatibility, which enable zirconia to be used in the posterior area. AIM: This study is a comparative evaluation of fracture resistance and failure modes in endodontically treated molars restored with zirconia endocrown and onlays. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This study was performed on 20 human mandibular first molars with similar dimensions. After root canal treatment, the samples were divided into two groups: endocrowns and onlays (n=10). Restorations were made using a CAD-CAM milling machine with zirconia CAD blocks and, after cementation, subjected to 10,000 thermocycling and 500,000 fatigue cycle procedures, respectively. Each specimen was placed on a Universal Testing Machine and subjected to axial compressive force applied at a crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The mean loads of failure of each group were statistically compared using the Student t-test. Chi-square tests were used to compare frequencies of failure modes among groups. RESULTS: Fracture resistance showed a statistically significant difference between endocrown (5374.6810±670.03445 N) and onlay (3312.5000±804.01428 N) (p<0.001). No statistically significant difference was detected in the distribution of failure types among the groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The fracture resistance of endocrown is substantially higher than that of onlay, and failure type does not differ in both restorations. Zirconia is a reliable material to use in conservative restorations.

Introduction: The current study aimed to assess the effect of non-thermal plasma (NTP) on the pushout bond strength (PBS) of epoxy resin and tricalcium silicate-based endodontic sealers. Methods: Forty single-canal extracted teeth were decoronated at the coronal region, underwent root canal preparation, and were assigned to four groups (n=10) for the application of AH26 sealer, NTP+AH26 (P-AH26), Endoseal TCS sealer, and NTP+Endoseal TCS sealer (P-TCS). The root canals were sectioned into 1 mm slices, and the PBS value was measured in a universal testing machine. Data were analyzed by the Friedman, Kruskal-Wallis, and Dunn tests (P<0.05). Results: The PBS of TCS and P-TCS groups was not significantly different (P>0.05). The PBS of the P-AH26 group was significantly lower than that of the AH26 group in the middle third (P<0.05). The PBS of the AH26 group was higher than the other groups in all sections. The PBS in the apical third was lower than other sections in all groups (P<0.05). Conclusion: NTP had no significant effect on the PBS of Endoseal TCS. NTP significantly decreased the PBS of AH26 sealer in the middle third but had no significant effect on its bond strength in other sections.

Background. This experimental study sought to assess the biocompatibility of Resil, an experimental epoxy resin-based sealer, in comparison with AH26 and AH-Plus sealers in rats. Methods. Twelve male Wistar rats weighing 400 to 500 grams were evaluated in this experimental study. Four polyethylene tubes containing Resil, AH-Plus, AH26 sealers, and an empty tube were implanted subcutaneously in rats. The degree of inflammation, type of inflammatory cells present, foreign body reaction, quality of connective tissue, and presence of fibrotic capsule were evaluated histopathologically at 7 and 30 days after implanting the tubes to assess the biocompatibility of sealers. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test. Results. At 7 days, the degree of inflammation in Resil group was almost similar to AH26 group, and 66.7% of rats showed moderate inflammation. AH-Plus group showed less inflammation than Resil and AH26 (50% of rats showed low degree of inflammation), At 30 days, the inflammatory status of all groups was the same, and 83.3% of rats showed very low degree of inflammation. The inflammatory response during the experiment decreased from day 7 to day 30 in all groups. The neutrophil count (P=0.00), fibrotic capsule (P=0.01) and the amount of granulation tissue (P=0.05) significantly decreased from day 7 to day 30 in Resil group. Conclusion. Resil sealer showed appropriate biocompatibility at 7 and 30 days after subcutaneous implantation in rats, comparable to AH26 and AH-Plus. Clinical studies are required to confirm these results.

Statement of the Problem: The success of root canal therapy depends on root canal irrigation, disinfection, and sealing of root canal. Wettability and roughness of root dentine surface are important factors in root canal disinfection and sealing. Purpose: This study aimed to assess the effect of chloroform application on roughness and wettability of the root canal walls in endodontic retreatment. Materials and Method: This in vitro experimental study evaluated 70 sound extracted human anterior teeth. The specimens were then randomly assigned to 7 groups as follows: Chloroform (group 1), 1g gutta percha+chloroform (group 2), 2g gutta percha+ chloroform (group 3), 1g gutta percha+ 1g sealer+ chloroform (group 4), 2g gutta perch+ 2g sealer+chloroform (group 5), 1g sealer + chloroform (group 6) and 2g sealer + chloroform (group 7). One drop of distilled water was placed on each tooth to measure the contact angle and wettability. Photographs were obtained of an area measuring 50×50 µm2 in three directions under an atomic force microscope to measure the roughness. The tooth blocks were exposed to the abovementioned mixtures for 10 min, and then rinsed with saline. The roughness and wettability of each sample were measured before and after treatment. Data was analyzed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's test. Results: The roughness of all groups significantly decreased following treatment, except for groups 1 and 4. The contact angle increased in all groups after treatment (except for the chloroform group), which indicated decreased wettability. The roughness and the contact angle have shown no correlation. Conclusion: Application of chloroform for removal of gutta-percha and sealer in endodontic retreatment decreases the roughness and wettability of dentine.

Many patients, particularly adults, may prefer clear aligner treatment due to its esthetics and ease of use. Some studies have shown that mechanical vibration can affect the rate of tooth movement and other aspects of orthodontic treatment. The purpose of this systematic review was to substantiate the effects of vibration as an adjunct to clear aligner treatment. A comprehensive search of the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library, and Scopus and also hand searching of reference lists was conducted for finding published studies up to March 2021. Two authors reviewed the titles and abstracts independently to select relevant studies and the full texts where there was some skepticism. Seven papers were included in this study following removing duplicates and irrelevant studies, four of which were randomized controlled trial and three were retrospective studies. In the majority of studies, High-Frequency Vibration (HFV) has shown to be effective in accelerating tooth movement and reducing the exchange interval of aligners. Little data have advocated that HFV can increase bone density, reduce pain or root resorption. It seems that HFV is more effective than low frequency vibration in patients treated with clear aligners. Based on a low level of certainty, HFV can increase the rate of tooth movement and decrease the exchange interval of clear aligners. Further investigation is necessary to clarify the effects of vibration on pain and discomfort, bone density, and root resorption.

OBJECTIVE: The studies evaluating the efficiency of fiber reinforce composite (FRC) retainers are few and contradictory. This study aimed to compare the debonding force of metal, glass FRC (GFRC) and polyethylene FRC (PFRC) retainers, assess the interactions between the materials and forces, and pattern of load distribution by finite element analysis (FEA). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight sound lower incisors were collected and randomly assigned to 3 groups (n=8; each sample included 2 teeth). Next, 15mm of the three retainers (multi-stranded metal wire, GFRC, and PFRC) were bonded to the lingual surface of the teeth and debonding force was measured by a universal testing machine. For FEA, 3D models were designed. The data related to geometrical models and material properties were transferred to ANSYS software. A 187-Newton load was applied to the incisal edge of the two centrals. Then different parameters were assessed. The three groups were compared by one-way Anova and Tukey's test. Type one error was considered to be 0.05. RESULTS: The debonding force decreased in the order: Metal (143.71N)≥GFRC (108.29N)>PFRC (45.08N). The difference between metal retainer and GFRC was not significant. In contrast, PFRC group showed significantly lower debonding force compared to other groups (P<0.05). FEA showed stress peak value in metal-composite interface. Maximum total deformation was noted in central, followed by lateral and canine. CONCLUSIONS: Glass-FRC can serve as an alternative to metal retainers as the difference in debonding force is not significant. However, the difficulty of repairing or replacing the Glass-FRC should be taken into account given the large number of failure in the interproximal dental area.

Introduction: Dental caries is the most common cause of tooth loss. However, it can be stopped by enhancing remineralization. Fluoride and casein phosphopeptide-amorphous calcium phosphate (CPP-ACP) are among the most important remineralizing agents. Recent studies have used bioactive glass as a remineralizing agent in different forms. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of a composite paste (prepared by mixing urethane polypropylene glycol oligomer with bioactive glass powder for easier application). Materials and Methods: Enamel disks were cut out of the buccal surface of extracted sound third molars. The samples were randomly divided into 3 groups of 15 and underwent Vickers microhardness test. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (FESEM/EDS) were performed. All samples were immersed in a demineralizing solution for 14 days. The tests were then repeated. Next, bioactive glass paste, fluoride, and CPP-ACP were applied on the surface of the samples and they were then stored in an artificial saliva for 14 days. The tests were repeated again. The microhardness values were analyzed using repeated measures ANOVA followed by one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc test (P < 0.05). Results: The microhardness of the bioactive glass group was significantly higher than that of other groups (P < 0.05). XRD revealed an enamel structure more similar to sound enamel in the bioactive glass and CPP-ACP groups compared with the fluoride group. FESEM/EDS revealed higher hydroxyapatite deposition in the bioactive glass group than in the other two groups. Conclusions: All three remineralizing agents caused remineralization, but bioactive glass paste had a greater efficacy.

Statement of the Problem: The dilemma of microleakage at the composite-tooth interface is still a major challenge in operative dental practice. Purpose: This study aimed to compare the microleakage of universal adhesive with self-etch and total-etch bonding strategies for restoration of class-II primary molar cavities. Materials and Method: This in vitro, experimental study was conducted on 75 extracted primary molars. Class-II cavities were prepared in mesial or distal surfaces. The teeth were randomly divided into five groups of Adper Single Bond 2 (3M ESPE; St Paul, MN, USA), Clearfil SE Bond (Kuraray Noritake, Osaka, Japan), G-Bond (GC Corp., Tokyo, Japan), G-Premio Bond (GC Corp., Tokyo, Japan) with total-etch mode and G-Premio Bond with self-etch mode. Cavities were also restored with Nano-hybrid resin composite (Grandio, VOCO, Cuxhaven, Germany) and incubated for 24 hours, followed by thermocycling at 1500× between 5-55°C within a dwell time of 20 seconds. Later, the cavities were placed in 1M silver nitrate solution and evaluated under a stereomicroscope. Finally, microleakage was assessed quantitatively and qualitatively. One tooth in each group was prepared and evaluated under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Data were analyzed using One-way ANOVA, Tukey's post hoc test and Chi-square test (p< 0.05). Results: The microleakage values were significantly different in the study groups (p< 0.05). The highest level of microleakage was noted in G-Bond and the lowest in G-Premio Bond with total etching. There was a significant correlation between the qualitative and quantitative measurements of microleakage. Conclusion: The G-Premio Bond yielded acceptable results in terms of microleakage in total-etch and self-etch modes. However, additional etching is recommended to improve the quality of bonding.

Background: Comparing the net setting time and radiopacity of an Iranian glass ionomer cement (GIC) and Fuji II (GC, Japan) according to ISO 9917-1:2007 standard. Materials and Methods: In this experimental/in vitro study, for both tests, we prepared 20 samples of Fuji II glass ionomer (self-cure restorative glass ionomer, batch number: 1608031, GC Corporation, Tokyo, Japan) and Iranian glass ionomer (Ava Tajhiz Dandan-Iran) at P/L of 2/7:1. Then, to determine the net setting time, we prepared a metal mold with dimensions of 10 mm in length, 8 mm in width, and 5 mm in height. Ninety seconds after mixing, the surface of the sample was subjected to the indenter, and the net setting time was recorded as the time elapsed between the end of the mixing and the time needle stopped making a complete circular indentation. To determine radiopacity, the specimens were poured into a mold with a diameter of 15 mm and thickness of 1 mm. Samples and a step wedge were irradiated with X-rays. Particle size analysis and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) analysis were also done for both cements. Test results were investigated with SPSS and through independent t-test (P < 0.05). Results: The mean value of net setting time for Fuji II was 4.83 min and for the Iranian Glass ionomer was 3.83 min (P < 0.05). The mean value of radiopacity for Fuji II was 2.3 mmAL and for Iranian Glass ionomer was 1.9 mmAl (P < 0.05). Conclusion: Net setting time and radiopacity of the glass ionomers were within the range of ISO 9917-1:2007. If all properties of the Iranian cement are set appropriately in future investigations, we propose to use it instead of Fuji II GIC. This has the additional benefit of being cost-efficient as Iranian cement costs less than Fuji II cement.

Introduction: Pain management during root canal therapy and after that is of great importance in endodontics. This study aimed to compare the effect of two non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs); ibuprofen and ibuprofen lysine with two methods of prescription on pain after single-visit root canal treatment of first and second mandibular molar teeth with irreversible pulpitis. Materials and Methods: This randomized study recruited subjects experiencing moderate to severe pain from a tooth diagnosed with symptomatic irreversible pulpitis (n=120). Subjects were randomized to receive 400 mg ibuprofen acid or 400 mg ibuprofen lysine regularly or on demand. The primary objective was to measure changes in pain scores at post-operative time frames of 6, 12, 18, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the root canal treatment on a 0-10 numerical rating scale (NRS). Independent T-test, Non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis Test and Friedman Test were used to analyze the data. Results: Kruskal-Wallis analysis showed a significant difference in NRS score between on-demand ibuprofen group and regular ibuprofen group and also between regular ibuprofen lysine group and regular ibuprofen group at 6 hours after the treatment (P<0.05). But no remarkable difference was observed in the recorded mean pain intensity of four study groups in the other time frames (P>0.05). Conclusions: Based on this randomized clinical trial, there was no significant difference in the pain intensity of patients using ibuprofen and ibuprofen lysine. Additionally, there was no significant difference in the degree of pain between the on-demand and regular groups, despite the fact that patients in the on-demand group used less medications. Due to the multiple negative effects of NSAIDs, it would be wise to prescribe ibuprofen on demand.

Introduction: Ceramic brackets have gained increasing popularity among dental clinicians and orthodontic patients but friction is a major concern when using them. This study sought to assess the effects of diode and Nd:YAG (neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet) laser irradiation on friction forces between two types of ceramic brackets and rhodium-coated esthetic archwires. Methods: Thirty polycrystalline and 30 poly-sapphire brackets were divided into 6 groups (n=10) as follows: (I) control polycrystalline brackets (no laser irradiation), (II) polycrystalline brackets subjected to diode laser irradiation, (III) polycrystalline brackets subjected to Nd:YAG laser irradiation, (IV) control poly-sapphire brackets (no laser irradiation), (V) poly-sapphire brackets subjected to diode laser irradiation, and (VI) poly-sapphire brackets subjected to Nd:YAG laser irradiation. The bracket slots were laser-irradiated on a custom-made table. Sixty 5-cm pieces of rhodium-coated archwires were used for the friction test in a universal testing machine at a speed of 10 mm/min. Ten brackets from the six groups underwent scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). Results: The frictional resistance value of polycrystalline brackets was significantly higher than that of poly-sapphire brackets, irrespective of laser type (P <0.05). Irradiation of diode and Nd:YAG lasers, compared with the control group, had no significant effect on friction, irrespective of bracket type (P >0.05). Conclusion: It appears that diode and Nd:YAG laser irradiation cannot significantly decrease the friction. Future studies are warranted on different laser types with variable exposure.

OBJECTIVE: It is claimed that a hydrophilic primer, called the moisture insensitive primer (MIP), can be used with both dry and wet enamel surfaces. This study sought to assess the shear bond strength (SBS) of APC Plus adhesive coated appliance system to enamel using MIP in wet and dry conditions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This in vitro experimental study evaluated 24 extracted maxillary premolars with intact buccal enamel. The teeth were randomly divided into two groups (n=12), and APC Plus premolar brackets were bonded to their buccal surface using moisture insensitive primer (MIP) under wet and dry enamel conditions. The SBS values were measured by a universal testing machine. The adhesive remnant index (ARI) score was also determined under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using t-test and Mann-Whitney test at P<0.05 level of significance. RESULTS: The SBS in wet condition was significantly lower than that in dry condition (mean value of 18.37MPa versus 25.5MPa, P<0.001). The two groups had no significant difference regarding the ARI scores (P>0.05). However, in both groups, less adhesive was left on the tooth surface. This suggests that bond failure occurred at the adhesive-enamel interface. CONCLUSIONS: APC Plus adhesive coated appliance system in combination with hydrophilic MIP can be effective in clinical conditions with high risk of moisture contamination.

Introduction: Remineralizing agents may be used for the treatment of white spot lesions (WSLs) prior to bracket bonding. However, some concerns exist regarding their possible interference with the etching and bonding process, negatively affecting the bond strength. This study aimed to assess the effect of two remineralizing agents with/without CO2 laser irradiation on the mechanical properties and shear bond strength (SBS) of demineralized enamel to the orthodontic bracket. Methods: This study evaluated 60 premolar teeth in 6 groups (n=10) as follows: (I) sound enamel, (II) demineralized enamel, (III) Nupro remineralizing agent (N), (IV) Nupro and CO2 laser (N/L), (V) Teethmate remineralizing agent (T), and (VI) Teethmate and CO2 laser (T/L). The remineralizing agents were applied to the enamel surfaces after their immersion in a demineralizing solution for 5 days. In groups IV and VI, the CO2 laser with a 10.6 µm wavelength, 10 ms pulse duration, a 50 Hz repetition rate, 0.3 mm beam diameter and 0.7 W power was irradiated after applying the remineralizing agents. Brackets were bonded to the enamel surfaces and SBS was measured by a universal testing machine. For the assessment of enamel microhardness, 20 sections of molar teeth were divided into 4 groups (n=5; N, N/L, T, T/L) and their microhardness was measured before demineralization, after demineralization and after remineralization. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) were carried out to assess the formation of hydroxyapatite. The atomic percentages of the C, O, P, Ca, Na, Si, F and Ca/P ratio were determined by EDS analysis. Results: The SBS significantly decreased in group II (P<0.001). There was no significant difference among the groups I, III, IV, V and VI (P<0.05). This finding was similar to the microhardness results, which showed an increase in microhardness after remineralization (P<0.05), with no difference among the remineralizing agents. The Ca/P ratio was the highest in the Nupro group and the lowest in the demineralized group. Conclusion: Remineralizing agents can significantly improve the microhardness and structural properties of demineralized enamel to a level similar to that of sound enamel with no adverse effect on SBS to orthodontic brackets.

This study investigated the effect of different cavity lining techniques on the marginal sealing of Class II composite restorations. A total of 36 human molar teeth, free of caries and fillings, were each prepared with two proximal Class II boxes mesially and distally. In mesial boxes, cavity liners were applied as follows: in group 1, separately cured flowable composite; in group 2, co-cured flowable composite; and in group 3, resin-modified glass ionomer (RMGI). The remaining cavities were filled incrementally with a universal restorative composite. The distal boxes were filled with no liner as controls. After thermocycling, the specimens were immersed in a silver nitrate solution and the microleakage was evaluated. Analysis of variance showed that the degree of microleakage for group 3 was significantly lower than that of the other groups. Based on the results, it was concluded that the use of RMGI as a cavity liner under composite restorations showed the least microleakage. Flowable composites, whether co-cured or separately cured, had no influence on the marginal sealing.

INTRODUCTION: Many endodontic sealers are available, but search for the ideal sealer continues. This study aimed to assess the cytotoxicity of two experimental endodontic sealers in comparison with AH-26 resin sealer. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This in vitro study was conducted on conventional and experimental root canal sealers: AH-26, an epoxy resin experimental sealer A (ES-A) composed of calcium tungstate, zirconium oxide, aerosil, bismuth oxide, titanium oxide, hexamine and an epoxy resin and experimental sealer B (ES-B) with compositions similar to ES-A except for the presence of imidazoline as a catalyst. The experimental sealers containing nano-particles were mixed with 37.5% of an epoxy resin. The extraction of five samples of each experimental sealer (A, B) and AH-26 sealer were subjected to MTT assay in the form of set and fresh at 1, 24 and 72 h with 1, 10, 100% dilution according to the International Standard ISO:10993-2012. Data were analyzed using the one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: The set ES-A had the least cytotoxicity from the first hour but the cytotoxicity of ES-B and AH-26 extraction decreased over time. In fresh form, except for 100% concentration, ES-A showed the least cytotoxicity compared to the other two sealers. CONCLUSION: All three sealers had high cytotoxicity in 100% concentration but had low cytotoxicity in 10% and 1% concentrations.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to assess the effect of quaternary ammonium salt (QAS) on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets to enamel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this in vitro experimental study, 0, 10, 20 and 30% concentrations of QAS were added to Transbond XT primer. Brackets were bonded to 60 premolar teeth using the afore-mentioned adhesive mixtures, and the shear bond strength of the four groups (n=15) was measured using a universal testing machine. After debonding, the adhesive remnant index (ARI) score was determined under a stereomicroscope. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA. RESULTS: The mean and standard deviation of shear bond strength of the control and 10%, 20% and 30% groups were 23.54±6.31, 21.81±2.82, 20.83±8.35 and 22.91±5.66 MPa, respectively. No significant difference was noted in shear bond strength of the groups (P=0.83). Study groups were not different in terms of ARI scores (P=0.80). CONCLUSIONS: The results showed that addition of QAS to Transbond XT primer had no adverse effect on shear bond strength of orthodontic brackets.
