RESUMEN

Management of the plant microbiome may help support food needs for the human population. Bacteria influence plants through enhancing nutrient uptake, metabolism, photosynthesis, biomass production and/or reinforcing immunity. However, information into how these microbes behave under different growth conditions is missing. In this work, we tested how carbon supplements modulate the interaction of Pseudomonas chlororaphis with Arabidopsis thaliana. P. chlororaphis streaks strongly repressed primary root growth, lateral root formation and ultimately, biomass production. Noteworthy, increasing sucrose availability into the media from 0 to 2.4% restored plant growth and promoted lateral root formation in bacterized seedlings. This effect could not be observed by supplementing sucrose to leaves only, indicating that the interaction was strongly modulated by bacterial access to sugar. Total phenazine content decreased in the bacteria grown in high (2.4%) sucrose medium, and conversely, the expression of phzH and pslA genes were diminished by sugar supply. Pyocyanin antagonized the promoting effects of sucrose in lateral root formation and biomass production in inoculated seedlings, indicating that this virulence factor accounts for growth repression during the plant-bacterial interaction. Defence reporter transgenes PR-1::GUS and LOX2::GUS were induced in leaves, while the expression of the auxin-inducible, synthetic reporter gene DR5::GUS was enhanced in the roots of bacterized seedlings at low and high sucrose treatments, which suggests that growth/defence trade-offs in plants are critically modulated by P. chlororaphis. Collectively, our data suggest that bacterial carbon nutrition controls the outcome of the relation with plants.

HMGA1 is a structural epigenetic chromatin factor that has been associated with tumor progression and drug resistance. Here, we reported the prognostic/predictive value of HMGA1 for trabectedin in advanced soft-tissue sarcoma (STS) and the effect of inhibiting HMGA1 or the mTOR downstream pathway in trabectedin activity. The prognostic/predictive value of HMGA1 expression was assessed in a cohort of 301 STS patients at mRNA (n = 133) and protein level (n = 272), by HTG EdgeSeq transcriptomics and immunohistochemistry, respectively. The effect of HMGA1 silencing on trabectedin activity and gene expression profiling was measured in leiomyosarcoma cells. The effect of combining mTOR inhibitors with trabectedin was assessed on cell viability in vitro studies, whereas in vivo studies tested the activity of this combination. HMGA1 mRNA and protein expression were significantly associated with worse progression-free survival of trabectedin and worse overall survival in STS. HMGA1 silencing sensitized leiomyosarcoma cells for trabectedin treatment, reducing the spheroid area and increasing cell death. The downregulation of HGMA1 significantly decreased the enrichment of some specific gene sets, including the PI3K/AKT/mTOR pathway. The inhibition of mTOR, sensitized leiomyosarcoma cultures for trabectedin treatment, increasing cell death. In in vivo studies, the combination of rapamycin with trabectedin downregulated HMGA1 expression and stabilized tumor growth of 3-methylcholantrene-induced sarcoma-like models. HMGA1 is an adverse prognostic factor for trabectedin treatment in advanced STS. HMGA1 silencing increases trabectedin efficacy, in part by modulating the mTOR signaling pathway. Trabectedin plus mTOR inhibitors are active in preclinical models of sarcoma, downregulating HMGA1 expression levels and stabilizing tumor growth.

Production of carotenoids by yeast fermentation is an advantaged technology due to its easy scaling and safety. Nevertheless, carotenoid production needs an economic culture medium and other efficient yeast stains. The study aims to isolate and identify a yeast strain capable of producing carotenoids using a cost-effective substrate. A new strain was identified as Rhodotorula toruloides L/24-26-1, which can produce carotenoids at different pretreated and unpretreated sugarcane molasses concentrations (40 and 80 g/L). The highest biomass concentration (18.6 ± 0.6 g/L) was reached in the culture using 80 g/L of hydrolyzed molasses. On the other hand, the carotenoid accumulation reached the maximum value using pretreated molasses at 40 g/L (715.4 ± 15.1 µg/g d.w). In this case, the ß-carotene was 1.5 times higher than that on the control medium. The yeast growth in molasses was not correlated with carotenoid production. The most outstanding production of The DPPH, ABTS, and FRAP tests demonstrated the antioxidant activity of the obtained carotenogenic extracts. This research demonstrated the R. toruloides L/24-26-1 strain biotechnological potential for carotenoid compounds. The yeast produces carotenoids with antioxidant activity in an inexpensive medium, such as sulfuric acid pretreated and unpretreated molasses.

El tratamiento de la enfermedad inflamatoria intestinal (EII) ha sufrido una gran transformación tras la introducción de los fármacos biológicos. Gracias a ellos, los objetivos del tratamiento han evolucionado desde la respuesta y remisión clínica a objetivos más ambiciosos, como la remisión endoscópica o radiológica. Sin embargo, aunque los biológicos son muy eficaces, un porcentaje importante de pacientes no obtendrá una respuesta inicial o la perderá a lo largo del tiempo. Sabemos que existe una relación directa entre las concentraciones valle del biológico y su eficacia terapéutica, que cuanto más exigente sea el objetivo terapéutico serán necesarios niveles superiores del fármaco y que es frecuente la exposición insuficiente al mismo. La monitorización terapéutica de medicamentos biológicos, así como los modelos farmacocinéticos, nos brindan la posibilidad de ofrecer un enfoque personalizado del abordaje en pacientes con EII. Durante los últimos años se ha acumulado información relevante respecto a su utilidad durante o después de la inducción, así como en el mantenimiento del tratamiento biológico, en estrategias reactivas o proactivas y antes de la retirada o desintensificación del esquema.El objetivo de este documento es establecer recomendaciones sobre la utilidad de la monitorización terapéutica de biológicos en pacientes con EII, en los diferentes escenarios de la práctica clínica e identificar las áreas donde su utilidad es evidente, prometedora o controvertida. The treatment of inflammatory bowel disease has undergone a significant transformation following the introduction of biologic drugs. Thanks to these drugs, treatment goals have evolved from clinical response and remission to more ambitious objectives, such as endoscopic or radiologic remission. However, even though biologics are highly effective, a significant percentage of patients will not achieve an initial response or may lose it over time. We know that there is a direct relationship between the trough concentrations of the biologic and its therapeutic efficacy, with more demanding therapeutic goals requiring higher drug levels, and inadequate exposure being common.Therapeutic drug monitoring of biologic medications, along with pharmacokinetic models, provides us with the possibility of offering a personalized approach to treatment for patients with IBD. Over the past few years, relevant information has accumulated regarding its utility during or after induction, as well as in the maintenance of biologic treatment, in reactive or proactive strategies, and prior to withdrawal or treatment de-escalation.The aim of this document is to establish recommendations regarding the utility of therapeutic drug monitoring of biologics in patients with inflammatory bowel disease, in different clinical practice scenarios, and to identify areas where its utility is evident, promising, or controversial. A CoII-porphyrin complex (1) with an appended aza-crown ether for Lewis acid (LA) binding was synthesized and characterized. NMR spectroscopy and electrochemistry show that cationic group I and II LAs (i.e., Li+, Na+, K+, Ca2+, Sr2+, and Ba2+) bind to the aza-crown ether group of 1. The binding constant for Li+ is comparable to that observed for a free aza-crown ether. LA binding causes an anodic shift in the CoII/CoI couple of between 10 and 40 mV and also impacts the CoIII/CoII couple. The magnitude of the anodic shift of the CoII/CoI couple varies linearly with the strength of the LA as determined by the pKa of the corresponding metal-aqua complex, with dications giving larger shifts than monocations. The extent of the anodic shift of the CoII/CoI couple also increases as the ionic strength of the solution decreases. This is consistent with electric field effects being responsible for the changes in the redox properties of 1 upon LA binding and provides a novel method to tune the reduction potential. Density functional theory calculations indicate that the bound LA is 5.6 to 6.8 Å away from the CoII ion, demonstrating that long-range electrostatic effects, which do not involve changes to the primary coordination sphere, are responsible for the variations in redox chemistry. Compound 1 was investigated as a CO2 reduction electrocatalyst and shows high activity but rapid decomposition.

OBJECTIVE: To assess and compare the functional and quality of life results in patients treated with curative intent for localized prostate cancer during 2015 in our hospital. METHOD: 77 patients treated by radical prostatectomy or external radiotherapy with androgen deprivation were prospective enrolled. Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite for Clinical Practice (EPIC-CP) questionnaire at 3-year follow-up and Spanish Questionnaire on Quality of Life in Patients with Prostate Cancer (CAVIPRES-30) at diagnosis and at 3-year follow-up were registered. RESULTS: 68 patients were included, 39 patients treated by radical prostatectomy and 29 received external radiotherapy with androgen deprivation. Among the operated patients, 61.5% were dry and 17.9% use three or more daily pads, compared to 72.4% and 6.8%, respectively, in the radiotherapy group. 48.7% of prostatectomized patients reported very poor or no capacity to have a sufficiently rigid erection, compared to 69% of the radiated group. After surgery, 43.6% considered bad or very bad quality-of-life, compared to 68.9% in the radiotherapy group. In the comparison of the data of the pre- and post-treatment questionnaire can be seen that the patients had a superior perception before the procedure. CONCLUSIONS: Patients treated by surgery have a better perception of quality-of-life compared to those treated by radiotherapy.


OBJETIVO: Determinar y comparar los resultados funcionales y de calidad de vida de pacientes con cáncer de próstata tratados con intención curativa durante el año 2015 en nuestro centro. MÉTODO: Se incluyeron 77 pacientes sometidos a prostatectomía radical (PR) o radioterapia externa con terapia de deprivación androgénica (TDA). Se realizaron el Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite for Clinical Practice (EPIC-CP) tras 3 años de seguimiento y el Cuestionario Español de Calidad de Vida en Pacientes con Cáncer de Próstata (CAVIPRES-30) al diagnóstico y a los 3 años. RESULTADOS: Se incluyeron 68 pacientes, 39 con PR y 29 con radioterapia más TDA. De los pacientes intervenidos, el 61.5% están secos y el 17.9% usan tres o más compresas, diarias frente al 72.4% y el 6.8%, respectivamente, en el grupo de radioterapia. El 48.7% de los prostatectomizados refieren erecciones muy malas o ninguna, frente al 69% de los radiados. Tras la cirugía, el 43.6% refieren mala o muy mala calidad de vida, frente al 68.9% de los radiados. En la comparación de los datos del cuestionario pre- y postratamiento, los pacientes tenían una percepción superior antes del procedimiento. CONCLUSIONES: Los pacientes tratados mediante cirugía tienen una mejor percepción de su calidad de vida relacionada con la salud que los radiados.

BACKGROUND: A short dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) duration has been proposed for patients at high bleeding risk (HBR) undergoing drug-eluting coronary stent (DES) implantation. Whether this strategy is safe and effective after a non-ST-segment elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) remains uncertain. AIMS: We aimed to compare the impact of 1-month versus 3-month DAPT on clinical outcomes after DES implantation among HBR patients with or without NSTE-ACS. METHODS: This is a prespecified analysis from the XIENCE Short DAPT programme involving three prospective, international, single-arm studies evaluating the safety and efficacy of 1-month (XIENCE 28 USA and Global) or 3-month (XIENCE 90) DAPT among HBR patients after implantation of a cobalt-chromium everolimus-eluting stent. Ischaemic and bleeding outcomes associated with 1- versus 3-month DAPT were assessed according to clinical presentation using propensity score stratification. RESULTS: Of 3,364 HBR patients (1,392 on 1-month DAPT and 1,972 on 3-month DAPT), 1,164 (34.6%) underwent DES implantation for NSTE-ACS. At 12 months, the risk of the primary endpoint of death or myocardial infarction was similar between 1- and 3-month DAPT in patients with (hazard ratio [HR] 1.09, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.71-1.65) and without NSTE-ACS (HR 0.88, 95% CI: 0.63-1.23; p-interaction=0.34). The key secondary endpoint of Bleeding Academic Research Consortium (BARC) Type 2-5 bleeding was consistently reduced in both NSTE-ACS (HR 0.57, 95% CI: 0.37-0.88) and stable patients (HR 0.84, 95% CI: 0.61-1.15; p-interaction=0.15) with 1-month DAPT. CONCLUSIONS: Among HBR patients undergoing implantation of an everolimus-eluting stent, 1-month, compared to 3-month DAPT, was associated with similar ischaemic risk and reduced bleeding at 1 year, irrespective of clinical presentation.

Micro- and nano-plastics (NPs) are found in human milk, blood, tissues, and organs and associate with aberrant health outcomes including inflammation, genotoxicity, developmental disorders, onset of chronic diseases, and autoimmune disorders. Yet, interfacial interactions between plastics and biomolecular systems remain underexplored. Here, we have examined experimentally, in vitro, in vivo, and by computation, the impact of polystyrene (PS) NPs on a host of biomolecular systems and assemblies. Our results reveal that PS NPs essentially abolished the helix-content of the milk protein ß-lactoglobulin (BLG) in a dose-dependent manner. Helix loss is corelated with the near stoichiometric formation of ß-sheet elements in the protein. Structural alterations in BLG are also likely responsible for the nanoparticle-dependent attrition in binding affinity and weaker on-rate constant of retinol, its physiological ligand (compromising its nutritional role). PS NP-driven helix-to-sheet conversion was also observed in the amyloid-forming trajectory of hen egg-white lysozyme (accelerated fibril formation and reduced helical content in fibrils). Caenorhabditis elegans exposed to PS NPs exhibited a decrease in the fluorescence of green fluorescent protein-tagged dopaminergic neurons and locomotory deficits (akin to the neurotoxin paraquat exposure). Finally, in silico analyses revealed that the most favorable PS/BLG docking score and binding energies corresponded to a pose near the hydrophobic ligand binding pocket (calyx) of the protein where the NP fragment was found to make nonpolar contacts with side-chain residues via the hydrophobic effect and van der Waals forces, compromising side chain/retinol contacts. Binding energetics indicate that PS/BLG interactions destabilize the binding of retinol to the protein and can potentially displace retinol from the calyx region of BLG, thereby impairing its biological function. Collectively, the experimental and high-resolution in silico data provide new insights into the mechanism(s) by which PS NPs corrupt the bimolecular structure and function, induce amyloidosis and onset neuronal injury, and drive aberrant physiological and behavioral outcomes.

Hypervirulent K. pneumoniae infection has been raising worldwide and is one of the major causes of community-acquired pyogenic liver abscess. We described a case report of pyogenic liver abscess caused by an atypical hypervirulent (non-hypermucoviscous) K. pneumoniae K1 ST23 in a diabetic Asian patient who resided in Mexico. The susceptibility to antimicrobials, pathogenicity, molecular and genomic analysis were determined. A man from Guangdong (China) with a recent diagnosis of diabetes mellitus was admitted to the hospital, and he denied traveling in the last 3 months. A computed tomography revealed a right lobe liver abscess. On the third day after admission a Klebsiella pneumoniae isolate (14652) was obtained. The isolate corresponded to a susceptible K. pneumoniae with capsular type K1 and ST23 (CG23) and exhibited a non-hypermucoviscous phenotype. The isolate 14652 was genetically related to the globally distributed lineage ST23-KL1. This study describes the first case in Mexico of K. pneumoniae capsular type K1 and ST23 with an atypical hypervirulent phenotype.

The current investigation aims to underline the impact of salicylic acid or calcium chloride seed pre-treatments on mineral status and oxidative stress markers, namely levels of electrolyte leakage (EL) and lipid peroxidation levels, measured as thiobarbituric reactive substances (TBARS), and the activity of some antioxidant enzymes in roots and leaves of plants in two barley species grown under various salt treatments. Overall, our results revealed that salinity inhibits essential nutrient absorption such as iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium and stimulates the absorption of sodium. Also, this environmental constraint induced oxidative stress in plants in comparison with the control conditions. This state of oxidative stress is reflected by an increase in TBARS content as well as the stimulation of EL values. In addition, salinity induced disturbances in the activity of antioxidant enzymes, which were mainly dependent on the applied salt concentration and the species. In addition, Hordeum marinum maintained high antioxidant enzyme activity and low levels of oxidative stress parameters, which reinforces its salt-tolerant character. Importantly, salicylic acid or calcium chloride seed priming alleviated the mineral imbalance and the oxidative damage induced by salinity. Moreover, seed priming improves iron, calcium magnesium and potassium content and limitsthe accumulation of sodium. Also, both treatments not only decrease TBARS levels and limit EL, but they also stimulate the antioxidant enzyme activities in the leaves and roots of the stressed plants as compared with stressed plants grown from non-primed seeds. Interestingly, the beneficial effects of the mentioned treatments were more notable on Hordeum vulgare species.

A family of 4,4'-tBu2-2,2'-bipyridine (tBubpy) ligands with substituents in either the 6-position, 4,4'-tBu2-6-Me-bpy (tBubpyMe), or 6 and 6'-positions, 4,4'-tBu2-6,6'-R2-bpy (tBubpyR2; R = Me, iPr, sBu, Ph, or Mes), was synthesized. These ligands were used to prepare Ni complexes in the 0, I, and II oxidation states. We observed that the substituents in the 6 and 6'-positions of the tBubpy ligand impact the properties of the Ni complexes. For example, bulkier substituents in the 6,6'-positions of tBubpy better stabilized (tBubpyR2)NiICl species and resulted in cleaner reduction from (tBubpyR2)NiIICl2. However, bulkier substituents hindered or prevented coordination of tBubpyR2 ligands to Ni0(cod)2. In addition, by using complexes of the type (tBubpyMe)NiCl2 and (tBubpyR2)NiCl2 as precatalysts for different XEC reactions, we demonstrated that the 6 or 6,6' substituents lead to major differences in catalytic performance. Specifically, while (tBubpyMe)NiIICl2 is one of the most active catalysts reported to date for XEC and can facilitate XEC reactions at room temperature, lower turnover frequencies were observed for catalysts containing tBubpyR2 ligands. A detailed study on the catalytic intermediates (tBubpy)Ni(Ar)I and (tBubpyMe2)Ni(Ar)I revealed several factors that likely contributed to the differences in catalytic activity. For example, whereas complexes of the type (tBubpy)Ni(Ar)I are low spin and relatively stable, complexes of the type (tBubpyMe2)Ni(Ar)I are high-spin and less stable. Further, (tBubpyMe2)Ni(Ar)I captures primary and benzylic alkyl radicals more slowly than (tBubpy)Ni(Ar)I, consistent with the lower activity of the former in catalysis. Our findings will assist in the design of tailor-made ligands for Ni-catalyzed transformations.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: In patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the workup for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR), the clinical impact of coronary revascularization complexity remains largely unknown. This study sought to examine the impact of PCI complexity on clinical outcomes after TAVR in patients undergoing PCI in the preprocedural workup. METHODS: This was a multicenter study including consecutive patients scheduled for TAVR with concomitant significant coronary artery disease. Complex PCI was defined as having at least 1 of the following features: 3 vessels treated, ≥ 3 stents implanted, ≥ 3 lesions treated, bifurcation with 2 stents implanted, total stent length > 60 mm, or chronic total occlusion. The rates of major adverse cardiac events (MACE), including cardiovascular mortality, myocardial infarction, and coronary revascularization were evaluated. RESULTS: A total of 1550 patients were included, of which 454 (29.3%) underwent complex PCI in the pre-TAVR workup. After a median follow-up period of 2 [1-3] years after TAVR, the incidence of MACE was 9.6 events per 100 patients-years. Complex PCI significantly increased the risk of cardiovascular death (HR, 1.44; 95%CI, 1.01-2.07), nonperiprocedural myocardial infarction (HR, 1.52; 95%CI, 1.04-2.21), and coronary revascularization (HR, 2.46; 95%CI, 1.44-4.20). In addition, PCI complexity was identified as an independent predictor of MACE after TAVR (HR, 1.44; 95%CI, 1.09-1.83; P = .009). CONCLUSIONS: In TAVR candidates with significant coronary artery disease requiring percutaneous treatment, complex revascularization was associated with a higher risk of MACE. The degree of procedural complexity should be considered a strong determinant of prognosis in the PCI-TAVR population.

Background: Orbital tumors, arising within the bony orbit and its contents, present diverse challenges due to their varied origins and complex anatomical context. These tumors, classified as primary, secondary, or metastatic, are further subdivided into intraconal and extraconal based on their relationship with the muscle cone. This classification significantly influences surgical approach and management. This study highlights surgical experiences with orbital tumors, underscoring the importance of tailored surgical approaches based on the lesion's site and its proximity to the optic nerve. Methods: This retrospective study at the National Institute of Cancer's Head and Neck Department (2005-2014) analyzed 29 patients with orbital tumors treated with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or combinations of them. Patient demographics, tumor characteristics, and treatment responses were evaluated using computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging, and positron emission tomography-CT imaging. Malignant tumors often required orbital exenteration and reconstruction, highlighting the study's commitment to advancing orbital tumor treatment. Results: 29 patients (18 females and 11 males, age 18-88 years, mean 53.5 years) with orbital tumors exhibited symptoms such as decreased vision and exophthalmos. Tumors included primary lesions like choroidal melanoma and secondary types like epidermoid carcinoma. Treatments varied, involving a multidisciplinary team for surgical approaches like exenteration, with follow-up from 1 to 9 years. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy were used for specific cases. Conclusion: Our study underscores the need for a multidisciplinary approach in treating orbital tumors, involving various surgical specialists and advanced technologies like neuronavigation for tailored treatment. The integration of surgery with radiotherapy and chemotherapy highlights the effectiveness of multidimensional treatment strategies.

Objective: The objective is to expose the cardiovascular alterations in patients diagnosed with pediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome (PIMS) associated with COVID-19 during the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, in order to understand the disease, its evolution, and optimal management upon diagnosis. Method: Retrospective, observational, cross-sectional analytical study of patients diagnosed with PIMS according to the criteria of the World Health Organization at the National Institute of Pediatrics, from March 2020 to December 2021. Results: During the study period, 77 patients with PIMS were diagnosed. The results showed correlation between the shock state and alteration of laboratory markers (platelets 144217.29 ± 139321.6 µL [p < 0.001], procalcitonin 27.37 ± 38.37 ng/ml [p = 0.05] and ferritin 1937.87 ± 2562.63 [p < 0.001]). The ventricular function in patients with shock was significantly lower compared to those without shock (49.6 ± 9.1% vs. 58.1 ± 8.4 %; t-Student p < 0.001), as well as injury to the left coronary artery (p = 0.02). There is a correlation between NT-proBNP and ventricular dysfunction (Kruskal-Wallis p = 0.007). Statistical significance was found in the association between death, elevation of inflammatory markers and ventricular dysfunction (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The cardiovascular alterations observed, in order of frequency, were pericardial effusion (25.7%), myocarditis (15%), mild ventricular dysfunction (13.5%) and small coronary aneurysm with predominance of the left coronary artery and the anterior descending one.


Objetivo: Exponer las alteraciones cardiovasculares en los pacientes diagnosticados con síndrome inflamatorio multisistémico pediátrico (PIMS) asociado a COVID-19 durante la pandemia por SARS-CoV-2 con el fin de comprender la enfermedad, su evolución y el manejo óptimo al diagnóstico. Método: Estudio retrospectivo, observacional, transversal y analítico de pacientes con diagnóstico de PIMS de acuerdo con los criterios de la Organización Mundial de la Salud en el Instituto Nacional de Pediatría, de marzo de 2020 a diciembre de 2021. Resultados: Durante el periodo de estudio se diagnosticaron 77 pacientes con PIMS. Los resultados demostraron una correlación entre el estado de choque y la alteración de los marcadores de laboratorio (plaquetas 144217.29 ± 139321.6 µl [p < 0.001], procalcitonina 27.37 ± 38.37 ng/ml [p = 0.05] y ferritina 1937.87 ± 2562.63 [p < 0.001]). La función ventricular en los pacientes con choque se registró significativamente menor en comparación con aquellos sin choque (49.6 ± 9.1 % vs. 58.1 ± 8.4 %; t de Student p < 0.001), así como lesión en la arteria coronaria izquierda (p = 0.02). Existe una correlación entre el NT-proBNP y la disfunción ventricular (Kruskal-Wallis p = 0.007). Se encontró significancia estadística en la asociación entre fallecimiento, elevación de los marcadores inflamatorios y disfunción ventricular (p < 0.001). Conclusiones: Las alteraciones cardiovasculares observadas fueron, en orden de frecuencia, derrame pericárdico (25.7%), miocarditis (15%), disfunción ventricular leve (13.5%) y aneurisma pequeño coronario con predominio de la arteria coronaria izquierda y la descendente anterior.

Given the high relevance and impact of ransomware in companies, organizations, and individuals around the world, coupled with the widespread adoption of mobile and IoT-related devices for both personal and professional use, the development of effective and efficient ransomware mitigation schemes is a necessity nowadays. Although a number of proposals are available in the literature in this line, most of them rely on machine-learning schemes that usually involve high computational cost and resource consumption. Since current personal devices are small and limited in capacities and resources, the mentioned schemes are generally not feasible and usable in practical environments. Based on a honeyfile detection solution previously introduced by the authors for Linux and Window OSs, this paper presents a ransomware detection tool for Android platforms where the use of trap files is combined with a reactive monitoring scheme, with three main characteristics: (i) the trap files are properly deployed around the target file system, (ii) the FileObserver service is used to early alert events that access the traps following certain suspicious sequences, and (iii) the experimental results show high performance of the solution in terms of detection accuracy and efficiency.

This study delves into the eco-endocrinological dynamics concerning the impact of dexamethasone (DXE) on the interrenal axis in juvenile carp, Cyprinus carpio. Through a comprehensive analysis, we investigated the effects of DXE exposure on oxidative stress, biochemical biomarkers, gene expression, and bioaccumulation within the interrenal axis. Results revealed a concentration-dependent escalation of cellular oxidation biomarkers, including 1) hydroperoxides content (HPC), 2) lipid peroxidation level (LPX), and 3) protein carbonyl content (PCC), indicative of heightened oxidative stress. Concurrently, the activity of critical antioxidant enzymes, superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), significantly increased, underscoring the organism's response to oxidative insult. Notable alterations were observed in biochemical biomarkers, particularly Gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase (GGT) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity, with GGT displaying a significant decrease with increasing DXE concentrations. Gene expression analysis revealed a significant upregulation of stress and inflammation response genes, as well as those associated with sensitivity to superoxide ion presence and calcium signaling, in response to DXE exposure. Furthermore, DXE demonstrated a concentration-dependent presence in interrenal tissue, with consistent bioconcentration factors observed across all concentrations tested. These findings shed light on the physiological and molecular responses of juvenile carp to DXE exposure, emphasizing the potential ecological implications of DXE contamination in aquatic environments. Understanding these dynamics is crucial for assessing the environmental impact of glucocorticoid pollutants and developing effective management strategies to mitigate their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems.

AIM: The paradoxical protective association between overweight/obesity and diabetic microvascular complications (DMC), a phenomenon well-known as the obesity paradox, has been considered a non-causal association based on methodological influences. We aimed to investigate the association of generalized and abdominal obesity, as measured by body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC), respectively, with DMC in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2D), using a causal inference approach. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We enrolled 1436 patients with clinically diagnosed T2D but not DMC at baseline in a community-based prospective cohort in China between 2017 and 2019 and followed them annually until 2022 with new-onset DMC recorded. Marginal structural Cox models with inverse probability weighting were constructed to determine the causal association. Subgroup analyses were performed to identify potential effect modifiers. RESULTS: We observed 360 incident DMC cases, including 109 cases of diabetic nephropathy (DN) and 277 cases of diabetic retinopathy (DR) during four follow-up visits. Multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) for overall DMC, DN and DR were 1.037 (1.005-1.071), 1.117 (1.062-1.175) and 1.018 (0.980-1.059) for 1 kg/m2 increase in BMI, and 1.005 (0.994-1.017), 1.034 (1.018-1.051) and 1.000 (0.987-1.014) for 1 cm increase in WC, respectively. Similar patterns were observed across the BMI and WC categories, while the positive association appeared to be more pronounced in women. CONCLUSIONS: Generalized but not abdominal obesity was associated with an increased risk for the overall DMC, whereas both obesities were causally related to DN, albeit not DR, in T2D. Routine weight management should not be neglected in diabetes care, particularly in women.
