RESUMEN

We report a case of delayed diaphragmatic injury caused by lower rib fractures. A 56-year-old male was referred to our hospital due to the fractures of right lower ribs. Chest X-ray revealed pneumothorax, and the patient was hospitalized for follow-up. On the sixth day after the injury, the patient suddenly complained of chest pain and respiratory distress, and then shock status developed. Chest computed tomography (CT) revealed massive pleural effusion. An emergency operation was performed. The injury of the diaphragm was found. Fracture of the lower rib can cause diaphragmatic injury leading to massive hemorrhage.

RESUMEN

A 57-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with cardiomegaly on a chest roentgenogram. A mediastinal tumor was observed during a chest computed tomographic scan and the patient was diagnosed with pericardial synovial sarcoma as a result of a tumor biopsy. Surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy were carried out, and although the tumor temporarily decreased in size, it subsequently increased and the patient died approximately 3 years following the initial medical examination. Most synovial sarcomas commonly occur in the vicinity of the joints of the extremities. Therefore, we herein report a rare case of synovial sarcoma which occurred in the pericardium.

RESUMEN

A 52-year-old woman with no history of autoimmune disease was found to have a mediastinal tumor and focal airspace opacity in the right lung. Tissue diagnosis was obtained by resection of the mediastinal tumor and open fine needle aspiration of the right pulmonary tissue through a median sternotomy. Histopathologic examination and immunohistochemistry of the thymus tumor and cytologic analysis of the pulmonary tissue were both consistent with mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. This case suggests that multiorgan MALT lymphoma can also develop in the absence of an autoimmune disease such as Sjogren's syndrome.
