The conjunctiva and nictitating membrane of the eyelids in some reptilian species: a SEM overview.

The conjunctiva and nictitating membrane of reptilian eyelids have been studied by means of SEM. The whole surface pattern of the eyelids can be subdivided into the centrally positioned A-zone near the rims and the surrounding B-zone, including the fornix conjunctivae. The A-zone is characterized by the presence of epithelial lamellae or similar arranged cellular protrusions. All conjunctival epithelial cells demonstrate protrusions of extent morphological variety. Numerous goblet-cells occur in the B-zone and progressively increase in density in the direction of the fornix conjunctivae and the epithelial cells exhibit decreasing protrusions. The lower eyelid incorporates the discus conjunctivae, a platelike formation. It consists of dense connective tissue in which the collagen fibres stretch out orthogonally in a plywood-like manner. The nictitating membrane can be considered as a conjunctival fold near the rostral angle of the eyelids. Its bulbar surface folds in a perpendicular direction.

[Photoablation using Excimer laser irradiation--a suitable concept for microneurosurgery?]. / Photoablation mittels Excimer-Laserstrahlung--ein geeignetes Konzept für die Mikroneurochirurgie?

The suitability of Excimer laser beam for microneurosurgery was investigated in an animal experimental study. Cranial bones, cortex and the nervus ischiadicus of the rat were irradiated with 193 nm argon fluoride, 248 nm krypton fluoride, 308 nm xenon chloride and 351 nm xenon fluoride. After survival times of up to 30 days microscopic and electron optic findings of laser lesions at the tissues mentioned above, were studied. By means of the Excimer laser beam high precision tissue effects without or with only low thermal damage to the surrounding tissue were produced with any desired depth of penetration or extension. In analogy with the experiences gathered from animal experiments, a possible use is discussed for the removal of bone tissue around cranial nerves or vascular structures, of epileptogenic foci, or for cutting off pathways in pain surgery (e.g. the zone of entry of the dorsal root of spinal nerves).

In the light of own cases and the present literature the different possibilities of the incorporation of metallic mercury are indicated, the radiological findings explained and the possible consequences of the proof discussed.

[Detection and course of spontaneous extravasation of contrast media in excretory urography]. / Nachweis und Verlauf der spontanen Kontrastmittelextravasation im Ausscheidungsurogramm.

On the basis of two own cases and the present literature causes, symptoms and forms of the course of the spontaneous extravasation of contrast remedies are described. In the predominant part of the cases a conservative therapy is indicated. In a persisting rupture of the pelvicalyceal system in dependence of the clinical symptomatology an operative approach becomes necessary.

Prevention of neuroma formation by Neodym Yag laser--experimental observations.

The influence of Laser radiation on neuroma formation was investigated in rat sciatic nerves. Peripheral nerve trunks were divided by focused Neodym Yag Laser and compared with those transected by microscissors. The nerves were re-exposed at different time intervals up to 240 days after initial operation. True neuroma formation could not be observed after laser transection. Sharp division resulted in widespread amputation neuromas consisting of regenerating axons and connective tissue. Neodym Yag laser radiation by its scattering effect may cause deep coagulation necrosis and thrombosis of vasa nervorum thus sealing the dome of the divided nerve trunk. The formation of amputation neuromas may be suppressed by laser application.

[Exogenous allergic alveolitis in patients at secondary health facilities]. / Die exogene allergische Alveolitis bei Kranken peripherer Einrichtungen.

In order to avoid the transition into an irreversible pulmonary fibrosis a diagnosis of the exogenic allergic alveolitis as early as possible is necessary. On the basis of 8 own cases the importance of a correct interpretation of the in detail not specific clinical and radiological symptoms as well as of the with regard to possible inhalative allergen loads directed establishment of the anamnesis is described.

[Peripelvic extravasation in intravenous urography]. / Beitrag zur Problematik peripelviner Extravasate bei der intravenösen Urographie.

The perivelvic extravasation is a rare X-ray symptom in the intravenous urography. Etiologic, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects are discussed on the basis of an own case and the present literature.

[Bleeding postbulbar duodenal ulcer following radiotherapy of non-Hodgkin lymphoma]. / Blutendes postbulbäres Ulcus duodeni nach Strahlentherapie eines Non-Hodgkin-Lymphoms.

On the basis of a case of life-threatening haemorrhage from a postbulbar duodenal ulcer two and a half year after radiotherapy carried out on a non-Hodgkin-lymphoma, cases of the genesis and the diagnostics of this late complication are discussed.
