RESUMEN

This study evaluated the growth performance and parasite load of angelfish juveniles Pterophyllum scalare kept at different stocking densities using two rearing systems. The experiment was conducted in a factorial design (4x2) with four stocking densities (0.1, 0.4, 0.7, and 1.0 g/L), two type of aquarium tanks (glass and ceramic aquariums), and four replicates. The experiment lasted 60 days using 148 juvenile fish (3.05 ± 0.09 g) randomly placed in 32 aquariums (50 L) equipped with filters and aeration. All fish received two meals a day ad libitum (8:00 and 16:00). Water quality parameters such as temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and total ammonia were measured. At the end of the experiment, all fish were measured and weighed to determine growth performance and then subjected to parasitological analysis. The data were analyzed with a two-way ANOVA with post-hoc Tukey test (p<0.05). No effects on growth performance at different stocking densities were observed. However, there was an increase in Capillaria pterophylli infestation in the high stocking density within ceramic aquariums. Thus, this study recommends the use of 1.0 g/L for the intensive aquaculture system of freshwater angelfish, and applying cleaning management to avoid parasite infestation, particularly in ceramic aquariums.

RESUMEN

The work aimed to evaluate the weight-length relationship and the condition factor, characterizing the biometry, anatomy, histology and volumetric density of the liver of Brycon amazonicus, in different stages of body growth. The experiment used twenty specimens in four stages of body growth (PI, PII, PIII and PIV) harvested every 90 days, containing five specimens, each group. The livers were dissected, weighed (g) and processed routinely using the hematoxylin and eosin technique. The data were submitted to analysis of variance, Pearson's correlation test and linear regression. The equation that represented the weight-length relation was W = 0.05902 x L2.63, with negative allometric growth, but with a relative condition factor equal to 1.0. The liver was divided into three lobes with the gallbladder close to the right lobe and its color varied from light red to dark red, not varying in relation to other fish species. The hepatosomatic relationship followed body growth until the PII group stage and then declined, demonstrating the behavior of its development in Brycon amazonicus. The organ consists predominantly of hepatocytes, followed by sinusoidal vessels and capillaries, with histological morphology similar to that of many species of fish. Melanomacrophage centers were found only in the most developed animals, but in small quantities, prompting the development of new research on this cell, in this species. In this way, research of this nature allows the characterization of fish species, helping to improve breeding methods, understanding pathological processes caused by diseases, and obtaining better productive capacity, serving an increasingly demanding and prosperous market.

Soil hydrology, nutrient availability, and forest disturbance determine the variation of tropical tree species composition locally. However, most habitat filtering is explained by tree species' hydraulic traits along the hydrological gradient. We asked whether these patterns apply to lianas. At the community level, we investigated whether hydrological gradient, soil fertility, and forest disturbance explain liana species composition and whether liana species-environment relationships are mediated by leaf and stem wood functional traits. We sampled liana species composition in 18 1-ha plots across a 64 km2 landscape in Central Amazonia and measured eleven leaf and stem wood traits across 115 liana species in 2000 individuals. We correlated liana species composition, summarized using PCoA with the functional composition summarized using principal coordinate analysis (PCA), employing species mean values of traits at the plot level. We tested the relationship between ordination axes and environmental gradients. Liana species composition was highly correlated with functional composition. Taxonomic (PCoA) and functional (PCA) compositions were strongly associated with the hydrological gradient, with a slight influence from forest disturbance on functional composition. Species in valley areas had larger stomata size and higher proportions of self-supporting xylem than in plateaus. Liana species on plateaus invest more in fast-growing leaves (higher SLA), although they show a higher wood density. Our study reveals that lianas use different functional solutions in dealing with each end of the hydrological gradient and that the relationships among habitat preferences and traits explain lianas species distributions less directly than previously found in trees.

The aim of this narrative review is to confirm that acute pain after craniotomy is frequent and presents with moderate to severe intensity. We also highlight the importance of not only treating post-craniotomy pain, but also of preventing it in order to reduce the incidence of chronic pain. Physicians should be aware that conventional postoperative analgesics (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory, paracetamol, cyclooxygenase inhibitors 2, opioids) are not the only options available. Performing a scalp block prior to surgical incision or after surgery, the use of intraoperative dexmedetomidine, and the perioperative administration of pregabalin are just some alternatives that are gaining ground. The management of post-craniotomy pain should be based on perioperative multimodal analgesia in the framework of an "enhaced recovery after surgery" (ERAS) approach

The Pseudoplatystoma sp. is one of the most appreciated fish species for consumption. Being a carnivorous species, the painted requires special attention regarding their nutritional requirements. To date, few studies have been conducted to establish them in their stage of fattening especially in intensive cultivation systems. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the growth and economic performance of Pseudoplatystoma sp fed with protein levels reared in net cages. The fish weighing from 356.6 ± 40.3g were packed in twelve net cages in 18 m3 in which they remained for five months until acquiring the commercial weight for slaughter. The experimental treatment was constituted by three commercial extruded diets with different crude protein levels (36, 38, 40% CP) gradually being replaced with carbohydrate. Growth parameters, metabolic enzymes, fillet yield and economic performance were evaluated. The gain in weight, daily weight gain, diet consumption, protein efficiency rate, survival and fillet yield did not show significant difference. The feed conversion was best for fish fed a diet with 38 and 40% CP. No significant differences were observed for the hepatossomatic index parameters and liver enzymes. There were larger expenditures on rations containing 38% PB compared to the diet with 36% CP, this presented the best index of cost per kg of fish produced. The best growth rates and lower cost of feeding were obtained by fish fed with a 38% CP diet, which is, therefore, recommended for feeding in the final phase of surubins monitored via net cages.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Satisfaction is an important indicator of the quality of care during childbirth. Previous research found that a good environment at a health facility can increase the number of deliveries at that facility. In contrast, an unsatisfying childbirth experience could cause postpartum mental disorder. Therefore it is important to measure mothers' satisfaction with their childbirth experiences. We tested whether the eight-item Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ-8) provided useful information about satisfaction with childbirth-related care. The government of the Philippines promotes childbirth at health facilities, so we tested the CSQ-8 in the Philippine cities of Ormoc and Palo. METHODS: This was a cross-sectional study. We targeted multigravid mothers whose last baby had been delivered at a hospital (without complications) and whose 2nd-to-last baby had been delivered at a hospital or at home (without complications). We developed versions of the CSQ-8 in Cebuano and Waray, which are two of the six major Filipino languages. Reliability tests and validation tests were done with data from 100 Cebuano-speaking mothers and 106 Waray-speaking mothers. RESULTS: Both the Cebuano and Waray versions of the CSQ-8 had high coefficients of internal-consistency reliability (greater than 0.80). Both versions were also unidimensional, which is generally consistent with the English CSQ-8 in a mental-health setting. As hypothesized, the scores for data regarding the second-to-last delivery were higher for mothers who had both their second-to-last and their last delivery in a hospital, than for mothers who had their second-to-last delivery at home and their last delivery in a hospital (Cebuano: p < 0.001, rho = 0.51, Waray: p < 0.001, rho = 0.55). CONCLUSIONS: Scores on the CSQ-8 can be used as indices of general satisfaction with childbirth-related services in clinical settings. This study also exemplifies a convenient method for developing versions of the CSQ-8 in more than one language. These versions of the CSQ-8 can now be used to assess mothers' satisfaction, so that mothers' opinions can be taken into account in efforts to improve childbirth-related services, which could increase the proportion of deliveries in medical facilities and thus reduce maternal mortality.

The anesthesiological management of patients undergoing neurosurgery of the posterior fossa has a series of characteristics that should be known by anesthesiologists. Intraoperative management is guided by a series of factors that include the physiopathological changes secondary to the patient’s position during surgery, the importance of appropriate patient positioning to facilitate the surgical approach, the lower tolerance to changes in the elastance of the infratentorial region, the limited therapeutic options in episodes of intraoperative edema-swelling, and the presence of complications such as a venous air embolism. This first contribution to the guidelines discusses the main evidence available in the literature on the pre- and intraoperative approach to these patients (AU)

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: To find out, by means of a questionnaire, the procedures used by Spanish anaesthetists in peri-operative management of patients subjected to neurosurgery of the posterior cranial fossa. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A closed-question type questionnaire was sent to Anaesthesiology Departments with a Neurosurgery Department on the participation of anaesthetists in the peri-operative treatment of patients subjected posterior fossa surgery. RESULTS: The questionnaire was completed by 42 (57.5%) of the 73 national public hospitals with a Neurosurgery Department. The posterior fossa surgery was performed in the sitting position in 36 hospitals, although it was less frequently used than the lateral decubitus or prone decubitus position. There was little specific neurological monitoring, as well as little use of precordial and/or transcranial Doppler for detecting vascular air embolism. Nitrous oxide was used in less than 10% of the centres, and 15% avoided neuromuscular block when neurophysiological monitoring was used during the surgery. Cardiovascular problems were mentioned as being the most frequent in 29% of the centres, while in the post-operative period the most common complications were, cranial nerve déficit, airway oedema (23%), and post-operative vomiting (47%). CONCLUSIONS: The results obtained from the questionnaire showed that the sitting position was less used than the prone position in posterior fossa surgery, and that neurophysiological monitoring is during surgery is hardly used.

Cardiovascular problems were mentioned as being the most frequent in 29% of the centres, while in the post-operative period the most common complications were, cranial nerve deficit, airway oedema (23%), and post-operative vomiting (47%). Conclusions: The results obtained from the questionnaire showed that the sitting position was less used than the prone position in posterior fossa surgery, and that neurophysiological monitoring is during surgery is hardly used(AU)

RESUMEN

Atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, paroxistical supraventricular tachycardias and atrial tachycardias are the main supraventricular arrhythmias. Atrial fibrillation is the most common. In this review we comment their physiopathology, clinical manifestations, and treatments, paying special attention to the possible esmolol applications.

RESUMEN

The prevalence of Lyme disease in Chile is unknown. To study the existence and epidemiology of Lyme Disease in Chile. One hundred eighteen patients with signs or symptoms suggestive of Lyme disease were studied. Antibodies against Borrelia burgdorferi were measured using ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence screening tests. Positive cases were confirmed with ELISA using a purified antigen and Western Blot analysis. Human biological samples and ticks were cultured in BSK-H medium. Five patients, 3 with dermatological manifestations and two with facial palsy and other neurological symptoms, had antibodies against Borrelia, measured by ELISA and indirect immunofluorescence. However, the presence of IgM antibodies by ELISA using purified antigen, was confirmed in only one case. All sera and cerebrospinal fluids were negative on Western Blot analysis. No plasma, skin, CFS or thick culture yielded Borrelia. We could not confirm the existence of Lyme disease in Chile. Positive screening with negative confirmatory test suggests false positive non-specific reactivity or that local Borrelia are antigenically different compared to North American strains
