Radioactivity inspection of Taiwan for food products imported from Japan after the Fukushima nuclear accident.

The 3-11 Earthquake occurred in Japan last year had greatly damaged the lives and properties and also caused the core meltdown accident in the Fukushima nuclear power plant followed by the leakage of radioactive materials into biosphere. In order to protect against the detriment of radiation from foods which were imported from Japan, the Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER) in Taiwan started to conduct radioactivity inspection of food products from Japan after the accident. A total of about 20,000 samples had been tested from March 24 2011 to March 31 2012.

The performance evaluation of a movable gamma-ray counting system for radwaste measurement.

Performance tests of a movable gamma-ray waste drum scanning system were carried out in this study. The scanner consists of a single HPGe detector on a movable cart with a 90° collimation angle to the observed item. The detection efficiency for (137)Cs was determined using the ISOTOPIC software. The activities of 35 low-level radioactive waste drums were measured using this system and compared with the results of two other measurement systems. This movable scanning system gave the same result as the other two systems with a relative spread (one standard deviation) of about 7.2%.

Silica encapsulated SERS nanoprobe conjugated to the bacteriophage tailspike protein for targeted detection of Salmonella.

Silica-encapsulated Raman-reporter embedded SERS nanoprobes, named nanoaggregate embedded beads (NAEBs), were conjugated to the Salmonella specific tailspike protein (TSP) isolated from the P22 bacteriophage to enable a highly specific and ultrasensitive optical transduction platform. We demonstrate three successful surface conjugation strategies and highlight the detection of a single bacterium using SERS.

Hybrid surface-enhanced Raman scattering substrate from gold nanoparticle and photonic crystal: maneuverability and uniformity of Raman spectra.

A novel hybrid surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrate based on Au nanoparticles decorated inverse opal (IO) photonic crystal (PhC) is presented. In addition to the enhancement contributed from Au nanoparticles, a desired Raman signal can be selectively further enhanced by appropriately overlapping the center of photonic bandgap of the IO PhC with the wavelength of the Raman signal. Furthermore, the lattice structure of the IO PhC provides excellent control of the distribution of Au nanoparticles to produce SERS spectra with high uniformity. The new design of SERS substrate provides extra maneuverability for ultra-high sensitivity sensor applications.
