RESUMEN

As a remote and non-contact stimulus, light offers the potential for manipulating the polarization of ferroelectric materials without physical contact. However, in current research, the non-contact write-read (erase) process lacks direct observation through the stable current as output signal. To address this limitation, we investigated the photoinduced polarization switching capabilities of the cyanide-bridged compound [Fe2Co] using visible light, leading to the achievement of rewritable polarization. By subjecting [Fe2Co] crystals to alternating irradiation with 785 nm and 532 nm light, the polarization changes exhibited a distinct square wave pattern, confirming the reliability of the writing and erasing processes. Initialization involved exposing specific crystal units to 532 nm light for storing "1" or "0" information, while reading was accomplished by scanning the units with 785 nm light, resulting in brief current pulses for "1" states and no current signal for "0" states. This research unveils new possibilities for optical storage systems, paving the way for efficient and rewritable data storage and retrieval technologies, such as the next-generation memories.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of phytosterols (PS) and phytosterol esters (PSE) on C57BL/6 mice. Three groups of 34 six-week-old C57BL/6 mice of specific pathogen free (SPF) grade, with an average initial body weight (IBW) of 17.7g, were fed for 24 days either natural-ingredient diets without supplements or diets supplemented with 89 mg/kg PS or diets supplemented with 400 mg/kg PSE. Growth performance, blood biochemistry, liver and colon morphology as well as intestinal flora status were evaluated. Both PS and PSE exhibited growth promotion and feed digestibility in mice. In blood biochemistry, the addition of both PS and PSE to the diet resulted in a significant decrease in Total Cholesterol (TC) and Triglyceride (TG) levels and an increase in Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) activity. No significant changes in liver and intestinal morphology were observed. Both increased the level of Akkermansia in the intestinal tract of mice. There was no significant difference between the effects of PS and PSE. It was concluded that dietary PS and PSE supplementation could improve growth performance, immune performance and gut microbiome structure in mice, providing insights into its application as a potential feed additive in animals production.

In this study, we investigated reversible intermolecular proton shifting (IPS) coupled with spin transition (ST) in a novel FeII complex. The host FeII complex and the guest carboxylic acid anion were connected by intermolecular hydrogen bonds (IHBs). We extended the intramolecular proton transfer coupled ST phenomenon to the intermolecular system. The dynamic phenomenon was confirmed by variable-temperature single-crystal X-ray diffraction, neutron crystallography, and infrared spectroscopy. The mechanism of IPS was further validated using density functional theory calculations. The discovery of IPS-coupled ST in crystalline molecular materials provides good insights into fundamental processes and promotes the design of novel multifunctional materials with tunable properties for various applications, such as optoelectronics, information storage, and molecular devices.

Degenerative diseases are closely related to the changes of protein conformation beyond the steady state. The development of feasible tools for quantitative detection of changes in the cellular environment is crucial for investigating the process of protein conformational variations. Here, we have developed a near-infrared AIE probe based on the rhodamine fluorophore, which exhibits dual responses of fluorescence intensity and lifetime to local viscosity changes. Notably, computational analysis reveals that NRhFluors fluorescence activation is due to inhibition of the RACI mechanism in viscous environment. In the chemical regulation of rhodamine fluorophores, we found that variations of electron density distribution can effectively regulate CI states and achieve fluorescence sensitivity of NRhFluors. In addition, combined with the AggTag method, the lifetime of probe A9-Halo exhibits a positive correlation with viscosity changes. This analytical capacity allows us to quantitatively monitor protein conformational changes using fluorescence lifetime imaging (FLIM) and demonstrate that mitochondrial dysfunction leads to reduced protein expression in HEK293 cells. In summary, this work developed a set of near-infrared AIE probes activated by the RACI mechanism, which can quantitatively detect cell viscosity and protein aggregation formation, providing a versatile tool for exploring disease-related biological processes and therapeutic approaches.

Here we report a valence tautomeric (VT) complex with an enantiopure chiral ligand. By a suitable choice of counter anions, a significant improvement in photoconversion has been demonstrated, leading to novel photo-responsive polarization switching materials.

Light, a nondestructive and remotely controllable external stimulus, effectively triggers a variety of electron-transfer phenomena in metal complexes. One prime example includes using light in molecular cyanide-bridged [FeCo] bimetallic Prussian blue analogues, where it switches the system between the electron-transferred metastable state and the system's ground state. If this process is coupled to a ferroelectric-type phase transition, the generation and disappearance of macroscopic polarization, entirely under light control, become possible. In this research, we successfully executed a nonpolar-to-polar phase transition in a trinuclear cyanide-bridged [Fe2Co] complex crystal via directional electron transfer. Intriguingly, by exposing the crystal to the wavelength of light─785 nm─without any electric field─we can drive this ferroelectric phase transition to completely depolarize the crystal, during which a measurable electric current response can be detected. These discoveries signify an important step toward the realization of fully light-controlled ferroelectric memory devices.

INTRODUCTION: Post-traumatic headache secondary to mild traumatic brain injury in patients has become an important factor in their prognosis. Due to the lack of effective pharmacological treatments, non-pharmacological interventions such as acupuncture are considered to have greater potential. However, the efficacy and safety of acupuncture treatment have not been clearly demonstrated. The purpose of this meta-analysis protocol is to investigate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture in the treatment of headache secondary to mild traumatic brain injury. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Seven English and Chinese databases will be selected and searched according to their respective search methods, spanning the period from database creation to April 2022, and the languages will be limited to English and Chinese. Only randomized controlled trials will be included. Study selection, data collection, and risk of bias control will be performed by two independent investigators. Any disagreements will be referred to a third independent investigator for decision and documentation. Revman software will be used to complete our meta-analysis, and risk of bias assessment, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis will be performed to correct the results. Finally we will assess the reliability of our final results using the Recommended Guidelines Development Tool for Assessment. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: All data for this study will be obtained from published journals, so no ethical review will be required. The completed review will be published in a peer-reviewed journal and the findings will be further disseminated through presentation at an appropriate forum or conference.

RESUMEN

Severe traumatic brain injury patients are in critical condition, and rapid rescue is very important for prognosis. Currently, the resuscitation process is complex and it is difficult to get to the operating room quickly to target treatment. We present a new strategy based on the Internet of Things system to integrate complex first aid procedures for efficient and comprehensive rescuing of patients with severe traumatic brain injury. This system includes three modules: human sign monitoring equipment, emergency transport equipment, and a network diagnosis and treatment progress control center. The system not only supports the streamlining of rescue procedures but also transmits the patient's status and optimal treatment strategies in real-time by using an advanced Internet of Things system. After deploying the system in a hospital, we conducted a validation study to evaluate its feasibility and superiority in clinical use. The preliminary results of the study show that this system can significantly shorten the treatment time, which may help the prognosis of severe traumatic brain injury patients.

Molecular-based magnetoelectric materials are among the most promising materials for next-generation magnetoelectric memory devices. However, practical application of existing molecular systems has proven difficult largely because the polarization change is far lower than the practical threshold of the ME memory devices. Herein, we successfully obtained an [FeCo] dinuclear complex that exhibits a magnetic field-induced spin crossover process, resulting in a significant polarization change of 0.45 µC cm-2. Mössbauer spectroscopy and theoretical calculations suggest that the asymmetric structural change, coupled with electron redistribution, leads to the observed polarization change. Our approach provides a new strategy toward rationally enhancing the polarization change.

INTRODUCTION: Lumbar disk herniation (LDH) is the preeminent disease of lever positioning manipulation (LPM), a complex disorder involving alterations in brain function. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) has the advantages of non-trauma, zero radiation, and high spatial resolution, which has become an effective means to study brain science in contemporary physical therapy. Furthermore, it can better elucidate the response characteristics of the brain region of LPM intervention in LDH. We utilized two data analysis methods, the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) and regional homogeneity (ReHo) of rs-fMRI, to assess the effects of LPM on real-time brain activity in patients with LDH. METHODS: Patients with LDH (Group 1, n = 21) and age-, gender- and education-matched healthy controls without LDH (Group 2, n = 21) were prospectively enrolled. Brain fMRI was performed for Group 1 at two-time points (TPs): before LPM (TP1) and after one LPM session (TP2). The healthy controls (Group 2) did not receive LPM and underwent only one fMRI scan. Participants in Group 1 completed clinical questionnaires assessing pain and functional disorders using a Visual Analog Scale and the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA), respectively. Furthermore, we employed MNL90 (Montreal Neurological Institute) as a brain-specific template. RESULTS: Compared to the healthy controls (Group 2), the patients with LDH (Group 1) had significant variation in ALFF and ReHo values in brain activity. After the LPM session (TP2), Group 1 at TP1 also showed significant variation in ALFF and ReHo values in brain activity. In addition, the latter (TP2 vs TP1) showed more significant changes in brain regions than the former (Group 1 vs Group 2). The ALFF values were increased in the Frontal_Mid_R and decreased in the Precentral_L in Group 1 at TP2 compared with TP1. The Reho values were increased in the Frontal_Mid_R and decreased in the Precentral_L in Group 1 at TP2 compared with TP1. The ALFF values were increased in the Precuneus_R and decreased in the Frontal_Mid_Orb_L in Group 1 compared with Group 2. Only three brain areas with significant activity in Group 1 compared with Group 2: Frontal_Mid_Orb_L, Frontal_Sup_Orb_L, and Frontal_Mid_R. ALFF value in the Frontal_Mid_R at TP2 correlated positively with the change rates of JOA scores between TP1 and TP2 (P = 0.04, r = 0.319, R2 = 0.102). DISCUSSION: Patients with LDH showed abnormal brain ALFF and ReHo values, which were altered after LPM. The default mode network, prefrontal cortex, and primary somatosensory cortex regions could predict real-time brain activity for sensory and emotional pain management in patients with LDH after LPM.

OBJECTIVE: To observe the analgesic effect of Tuina by pressing and kneading the Huantiao (GB30) acupoint on rats with chronic constriction injury (CCI) and to explore the analgesic mechanism of Tuina on sciatica rats. METHODS: Thirty-two SPF male SD rats weighing 180 to 220 g were randomly divided into fore groups:blank group (without any treatment), sham group (only exposed without sciatic nerve ligating), model group (sciatic nerve ligating) and Tuina group (manual intervention after lsciatic nerve ligating). The CCI model was prepared by ligating the right sciatic nerve of the rats, on the third day of modeling, the rats in the Tuina group were given pressing and kneading the Huantiao (GB30) point for 14 days, and the changes of paw withdrawal threshold(PWT), paw withdrawal latency(PWL) were measured before and on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 10th, 14th and 17th days after modeling. The changes of sciatic functional index(SFI) were measured before and on the 1st and 17th day after modeling. The morphological changes of the sciatic nerve were observed by hematoxylin-eosin(HE) staining;and the differences in NF-κB protein expression in the right dorsal horn of the spinal cord of rats were detected. RESULTS: Following modeling, there was no significant difference in PWT, PWL and SFI between the blank group and the sham group (P>0.05), but the PWT, PWL and SFI of the model group and the Tuina group decreased significantly (P<0.01). After manual intervention, the pain threshold of rats in Tuina group increased. On the 8th day of manual intervention (the 10th day after modeling), PWT in Tuina group increased significantly compared with that in model group (P<0.01). On the 5th day of manual intervention (the 7th day after modeling), the PWL of the massage group was significantly higher than that of the model group (P<0.01). The pain threshold of rats in Tuina group continued to rise with the continuous manipulation intervention. After 14 days of manipulative intervention, the sciatic nerve function index of rats in the Tuina group increased significantly(P<0.01). Compared with the blank group and sham group, the myelinated nerve fibers of sciatic nerve in the model group were disordered and the density of axons and myelin sheath was uneven. Compared with the model group, the nerve fibers of rats in the Tuina group were gradually continuous and the axons and myelin sheath were more uniform than those in the model group. Compared with the blank group and sham group, the expression of NF-κB protein in the right spinal dorsal horn of the model group was significantly increased(P<0.01). Compared with the model group, the expression of NF-κB protein in the right spinal dorsal horn of rats in Tuina group decreased significantly(P<0.01). CONCLUSION: Pressing and kneading the Huantiao (GB30) point restores nerve fiber alignment;and improves the PWT、PWL and SFI in the CCI model by decreasing NF-κB p65 protein expression in the spinal dorsal horn. There fore, Tuina demmstrates an analgesic effect and improves the gait of rats with sciatica.

Phase separation is a common biological phenomenon in the liquid environment of organisms. Phase separation has been shown to be a key cause of many existing incurable diseases, such as the protein aggregates formed by phase separation of Alzheimer's Disease, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Parkinson's disease, etc. Tracking the occurrence of phase separation in vivo is critical to many disease detection methods and solving many treatment problems. Its physicochemical properties and visual detection methods have flourished in the last few years in chemical biology, among which the fluorogenic toolbox has great application potential compared to the traditional detection methods that cannot visualize the phase separation process intuitively, but just show some parameters indirectly. This paper reviews the mechanism and disease correlation proven in recent years for phase separation and analyzes the detection methods for phase separation, including functional microscope imaging techniques, turbidity monitoring, macromolecule congestion sensing, in silico analysis, etc. It is worth mentioning that the qualitative and quantitative analysis of aggregates formed by phase separation using in vitro parameters has successfully provided basic physical and chemical properties for phase separation aggregates, and is an important cornerstone for researchers to carry forward the past and break through the existing technical shackles to create new in vivo monitoring methods such as fluorescence methodology. Crucially, fluorescence methods for cell microenvironment imaging based on different mechanisms are discussed, such as AIE-based probes, TICT-based probes and FRET-based probes, etc.

Background: Research on the brain mechanisms underlying manual therapy (MT)-induced analgesia has been conducted worldwide. However, no bibliometric analysis has been performed on functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies of MT analgesia. To provide a theoretical foundation for the practical application of MT analgesia, this study examined the current incarnation, hotspots, and frontiers of fMRI-based MT analgesia research over the previous 20 years. Methods: All publications were obtained from the Science Citation Index-Expanded (SCI-E) of Web of Science Core Collection (WOSCC). We used CiteSpace 6.1.R3 to analyze publications, authors, cited authors, countries, institutions, cited journals, references, and keywords. We also evaluated keyword co-occurrences and timelines, and citation bursts. The search was conducted from 2002-2022 and was completed within one day on October 7, 2022. Results: In total, 261 articles were retrieved. The total number of annual publications showed a fluctuating but overall increasing trend. Author B. Humphreys had the highest number of publications (eight articles) and J. E. Bialosky had the highest centrality (0.45). The United States of America (USA) was the country with the most publications (84 articles), accounting for 32.18% of all publications. Output institutions were mainly the University of Zurich, University of Switzerland, and the National University of Health Sciences of the USA. The Spine (118) and the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics (80) were most frequently cited. The four hot topics in fMRI studies on MT analgesia were "low back pain", "magnetic resonance imaging", "spinal manipulation", and "manual therapy." The frontier topics were "clinical impacts of pain disorders" and "cutting-edge technical capabilities offered by magnetic resonance imaging". Conclusion: fMRI studies of MT analgesia have potential applications. fMRI studies of MT analgesia have linked several brain areas, with the default mode network (DMN) garnering the most attention. Future research should include international collaboration and RCTs on this topic.

Dempster-Shafer evidence theory is an effective method to deal with information fusion. However, how to deal with the fusion paradoxes while using the Dempster's combination rule is still an open issue. To address this issue, a new basic probability assignment (BPA) generation method based on the cosine similarity and the belief entropy was proposed in this paper. Firstly, Mahalanobis distance was used to measure the similarity between the test sample and BPA of each focal element in the frame of discernment. Then, cosine similarity and belief entropy were used respectively to measure the reliability and uncertainty of each BPA to make adjustments and generate a standard BPA. Finally, Dempster's combination rule was used for the fusion of new BPAs. Numerical examples were used to prove the effectiveness of the proposed method in solving the classical fusion paradoxes. Besides, the accuracy rates of the classification experiments on datasets were also calculated to verify the rationality and efficiency of the proposed method.

Uncertain information processing is a key problem in classification. Dempster-Shafer evidence theory (D-S evidence theory) is widely used in uncertain information modelling and fusion. For uncertain information fusion, the Dempster's combination rule in D-S evidence theory has limitation in some cases that it may cause counterintuitive fusion results. In this paper, a new correlation belief function is proposed to address this problem. The proposed method transfers the belief from a certain proposition to other related propositions to avoid the loss of information while doing information fusion, which can effectively solve the problem of conflict management in D-S evidence theory. The experimental results of classification on the UCI dataset show that the proposed method not only assigns a higher belief to the correct propositions than other methods, but also expresses the conflict among the data apparently. The robustness and superiority of the proposed method in classification are verified through experiments on different datasets with varying proportion of training set.

Failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a proactive risk management approach. Risk management under uncertainty with the FMEA method has attracted a lot of attention. The Dempster-Shafer (D-S) evidence theory is a popular approximate reasoning theory for addressing uncertain information and it can be adopted in FMEA for uncertain information processing because of its flexibility and superiority in coping with uncertain and subjective assessments. The assessments coming from FMEA experts may include highly conflicting evidence for information fusion in the framework of D-S evidence theory. Therefore, in this paper, we propose an improved FMEA method based on the Gaussian model and D-S evidence theory to handle the subjective assessments of FMEA experts and apply it to deal with FMEA in the air system of an aero turbofan engine. First, we define three kinds of generalized scaling by Gaussian distribution characteristics to deal with potential highly conflicting evidence in the assessments. Then, we fuse expert assessments with the Dempster combination rule. Finally, we obtain the risk priority number to rank the risk level of the FMEA items. The experimental results show that the method is effective and reasonable in dealing with risk analysis in the air system of an aero turbofan engine.

The failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) is a commonly adopted approach in engineering failure analysis, wherein the risk priority number (RPN) is utilized to rank failure modes. However, assessments made by FMEA experts are full of uncertainty. To deal with this issue, we propose a new uncertainty management approach for the assessments given by experts based on negation information and belief entropy in the Dempster-Shafer evidence theory framework. First, the assessments of FMEA experts are modeled as basic probability assignments (BPA) in evidence theory. Next, the negation of BPA is calculated to extract more valuable information from a new perspective of uncertain information. Then, by utilizing the belief entropy, the degree of uncertainty of the negation information is measured to represent the uncertainty of different risk factors in the RPN. Finally, the new RPN value of each failure mode is calculated for the ranking of each FMEA item in risk analysis. The rationality and effectiveness of the proposed method is verified through its application in a risk analysis conducted for an aircraft turbine rotor blade.

BACKGROUND: An increasing number of people suffer from chronic neck pain due to increased telecommuting. Manual therapy is considered a safe and less painful method and has been increasingly used to alleviate chronic neck pain. However, there is controversy about the effectiveness of manipulation therapy on chronic neck pain. Therefore, this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to determine the effectiveness of manipulative therapy for chronic neck pain. METHODS: A search of the literature was conducted on seven databases (PubMed, Cochrane Center Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, Medline, CNKI, WanFang, and SinoMed) from the establishment of the databases to May 2022. This study included RCTs on chronic neck pain managed with manipulative therapy compared with sham, exercise, and other physical therapies. The retrieved records were independently reviewed by two researchers. Further, the methodological quality was evaluated using the PEDro scale. All statistical analyses were performed using RevMan V.5.3 software. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluations (GRADE) assessment was used to evaluate the quality of the study results. RESULTS: Seventeen RCTs, including 1190 participants, were included in this meta-analysis. Manipulative therapy showed better results regarding pain intensity and neck disability than the control group. Manipulative therapy was shown to relieve pain intensity (SMD = -0.83; 95% confidence interval [CI] = [-1.04 to -0.62]; p < 0.0001) and neck disability (MD = -3.65; 95% CI = [-5.67 to - 1.62]; p = 0.004). However, the studies had high heterogeneity, which could be explained by the type and control interventions. In addition, there were no significant differences in adverse events between the intervention and the control groups. CONCLUSIONS: Manipulative therapy reduces the degree of chronic neck pain and neck disabilities.

RESUMEN

Dempster-Shafer evidence theory is widely used to deal with uncertain information by evidence modeling and evidence reasoning. However, if there is a high contradiction between different pieces of evidence, the Dempster combination rule may give a fusion result that violates the intuitive result. Many methods have been proposed to solve conflict evidence fusion, and it is still an open issue. This paper proposes a new reliability coefficient using betting commitment evidence distance in Dempster-Shafer evidence theory for conflict and uncertain information fusion. The single belief function for belief assignment in the initial frame of discernment is defined. After evidence preprocessing with the proposed reliability coefficient and single belief function, the evidence fusion result can be calculated with the Dempster combination rule. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed uncertainty measure, a new method of uncertain information fusion based on the new evidence reliability coefficient is proposed. The experimental results on UCI machine learning data sets show the availability and effectiveness of the new reliability coefficient for uncertain information processing.

Background: We conducted a retrospective analysis to explore the clinical characteristics, laboratory examination, imaging features, treatment outcomes, and prognosis of the Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci) pneumonia, aiming to improve early diagnosis and treatment. Methods: The clinical data of 12 patients with C. psittaci pneumonia diagnosed by metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) in our hospital were retrospectively analyzed. These data included baseline information, epidemiological history, clinical symptoms and signs, laboratory and chest computed tomography (CT) examination findings, treatment schemes, and prognosis. Results: The average age of the 12 patients was 58.25±13.27 years, and there were 7 (58.3%) males and 5 (41.7%) females in this cohort. Five patients had clear exposure to poultry or birds. The main clinical manifestations included fever (12/12, 100.0%), cough (12/12, 100.0%), expectoration (10/12, 83.3%), and dyspnea (10/12, 83.3%). Laboratory examination showed marked elevation of the total white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil (NEUT) count, C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), D-dimer, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), serum creatinine, and creatine kinase (CK) levels; as well as decreased hemoglobin (HGB), blood platelet (PLT), and albumin (ALB) levels. Arterial blood gas analysis showed that the average value of the oxygenation index (PO2/FiO2) was 290.9±83.1, which was less than 300 in 6 cases (50.0%). The main chest CT features were patchy or consolidation in the bilateral or unilateral lungs, and the boundary was not clear but showed a bronchial inflation sign. Also, some of the cases were accompanied by pleural effusion. Once the etiology was obtained, the patients were quickly treated with doxycycline combined with other antibiotics. All 12 patients improved and were discharged from the hospital. However, two severe patients were admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) and received ventilation and monitoring treatment. There were no deaths. Conclusions: C. psittaci pneumonia is an atypical community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) caused by C. psittaci infection, with its own laboratory and imaging characteristics. In this study, diagnosis was established based on the application of mNGS owing to the absence of easily available conventional pathogenic evidence. In addition, an aggressive and precise treatment strategy can help achieve a favorable prognosis for patients.
