RESUMEN

Although female cones of the hop plant (Humulus lupulus) are known primarily as raw material supplying characteristic bitterness and aroma to beer, their equally significant health-promoting effects have been known to mankind for several thousand years and hop is a plant traditionally utilized in folk medicine. This paper summarizes the scientific knowledge on the effects of all 3 major groups of secondary metabolites of hops; polyphenols, essential oils, and resins. Because of their chemical diversity, it is no coincidence that these compounds exhibit a wide range of pharmacologically important properties. In addition to antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer-related properties, particular attention is being paid to prenylflavonoids that occur almost exclusively in hops and are considered to be some of the most active phytoestrogens known. Hop oils and resins are well known for their sedative and other neuropharmacological properties, but in addition, these compounds exhibit antibacterial and antifungal effects. Recently, alpha bitter acids have been shown to block the development of a number of complex lifestyle diseases that are referred to by the collective name "metabolic syndrome." Information presented in this review confirms the significant potential for the use of hops in the pharmaceutical industry and provides an understanding of beer as a natural drink that, although moderately consumed, may become a source of many health-promoting compounds.

Female hop cones are used extensively in the brewing industry, but there is now increasing interest in possible uses of hops for non-brewing purposes, especially in the pharmaceutical industry. Among pharmaceutically important compounds from hops are flavonoids, having proven anticarcinogenic, antioxidant, antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory and estrogenic effects. In this review we aim to present current knowledge on the biotransformation of flavonoids from hop cones with respect to products, catalysis and conversion. A list of microbial enzymatic reactions associated with gastrointestinal microbiota is presented. A comparative analysis of the biological activities of hop flavonoids and their biotransformation products is described, indicating where further research has potential for applications in the pharmaceutical industry.

The constructed wetland (CW) for 326 PE with horizontal subsurface flow at Kotencice, Central Bohemia, Czech Republic, was built in 1994. Despite the relatively high efficiency of the CW, the filtration beds suffered from clogging, and therefore it was decided in 2011 to rebuild the whole system. The new treatment system was built as an experimental system consisting of four different combinations of horizontal and vertical beds. The major aim of the design was to determine the best hybrid combination which then could be used in the future for refurbishment of older horizontal flow CWs or for the new systems. The mechanical pretreatment consists of mechanical bar screens, a new Imhoff tank, and the original settling tank which has been converted into the accumulation tank from where the wastewater is pumped into the wetlands. The filters are planted with Phragmites australis, Phalaris arundinacea, Iris pseudacorus, Iris sibirica, Glyceria maxima and Lythrum salicaria in order to evaluate and compare various plant species' effect on the treatment process. The new technology includes a tertiary treatment which consists of a greenhouse with a photo-reactor for the cultivation of algae and hydroponic systems (residual nutrients removal), sludge reed-beds and a composting field.

Factors affecting continuous 2,4-DNT degradation by an immobilized mixed microbial culture were investigated including the cell adaptation to this toxic substrate, 4-NT co-degradation, packing material porosity and substrate mass loading. Experiments were carried out in two packed bed reactors, with poraver (porous glass) and expanded slate as packing materials, using a concurrent water-air flow with ample oxygen. Running the system as a batch reactor with re-circulated medium showed that the immobilized cells adapted to higher 2,4-DNT concentrations yielding higher substrate biodegradation rates. The 2,4-DNT removal rate further increased, up to 180-265 mg L(-1)d(-1), when the immobilized biomass cultivation was switched to a continuous mode. The type of the packing material influenced the 2,4-DNT removal rate, apparently due to the difference in biofilm development. Significant changes in the biofilm composition were observed compared to the original inoculum despite poor biofilm growth.

The degradation efficiencies of isomeric mononitrotoluenes (2- and 4-NTs) and dinitrotoluenes (2,4-DNT and 2,6-DNT) by either individual bacterial strains (Bacillus cereus NDT4, Pseudomonas putida NDT1, Pseudomonas fluorescens NDT2, and Achromobacter sp. NDT3) or their mixture were compared in submerged batch cultivations. The mixed culture degraded 2,4-DNT nearly 50 times faster than any of the individual strains. The mixed culture also demonstrated significantly shorter lag periods in 2,4-DNT degradation, a lack of nitrite or organic intermediates accumulation in the liquid medium and the ability to degrade a broader spectrum of nitrotoluenes over a wider concentration range. The presence of both readily degradable 2-NT (or 4-NT) and poorly degradable 2,6-DNT in the medium negatively affected 2,4-DNT biodegradation. However, the mixed bacterial culture still effectively degraded 2,4-DNT with only slightly lower rates under these unfavorable conditions, thus showing potential for the remediation of 2,4-DNT contaminated sites.
