BACKGROUND: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunts (TIPS) against the combined treatment of endoscopic band ligation (EBL) and propranolol in managing patients with cirrhosis diagnosed with portal vein thrombosis (PVT). METHODS: A literature search from inception to September 2023 was performed using MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and Scopus. Independent screening, data extraction, and quality assessment were performed. The main measured outcomes were the incidence and recurrence of variceal bleeding (VB), hepatic encephalopathy, and overall survival. RESULTS: A total of 5 studies were included. For variceal eradication, there was initially no significant difference between the groups; however, after sensitivity analysis, a significant effect emerged (risk ratio [RR], 1.55; P < .0001). TIPS was associated with a significant decrease in the incidence of VB (RR, 0.34; P < .0001) and a higher probability of remaining free of VB in the first 2 years after the procedure (first year: RR, 1.41; P < .0001; second year: RR, 1.58; P < .0001). TIPS significantly reduced the incidence of death due to acute GI bleeding compared with EBL + propranolol (RR, 0.37; P = .05). CONCLUSION: TIPS offers a comprehensive therapeutic advantage over the combined EBL and propranolol regimen, especially for patients with cirrhosis with PVT. Its efficacy in variceal eradication, reducing rebleeding, and mitigating death risks due to acute GI bleeding is evident.

One of the major environmental problems we have today is dye pollution, primarily caused by the textile industry. This pollution has detrimental effects on aquatic life, soil fertility, and human health. Many microbial biosorbents have been documented in the literature for the removal of a wide range of azo dyes commonly employed in the textile industry. However, Yarrowia lipolytica NBRC1658 is firstly used as both free and immobilized sorbents for the removal of Reactive yellow 18 (RY18), acid red 18 (AR18) and basic blue 41 (BB41) in this study. The effect of experimental conditions such as pH, biosorbent quantity, dye concentration, contact time, and temperature on dye removal capacity are examined. The research findings demonstrate that the adsorption capacity is higher in biomass compared to immobilized cells. The highest adsorption capacities are observed at pH 2 for RY18 and AR18, while pH 9 is optimal for BB41. Increasing the adsorbent dosage and initial concentration significantly improves the adsorption capacity. The Langmuir model best describes the adsorption process, indicating that the dye attaches to the biosorbent in a single layer, with a uniform biosorbent surface. The removal of the dye occurs through a chemical process on the biosorbent surface, as evidenced by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. According to thermodynamic analysis, higher temperatures promote greater adsorption of dyes. Our study shows the effectiveness of Yarrowia lipolyica NBRC1658 as a biosorbent in the removal of a wide range of industrial dyes.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Malnutrition is one of the most troublesome comorbidities among hemodialysis patients (HD). Myostatin (MSTN) belongs to the transforming growth factor-ß superfamily. In HD patients, MSTN effects are not limited to skeletal muscle growth. The present study aimed to assess MSTN levels in HD patients and its relation to various clinical and biochemical parameters. PATIENTS AND METHODS: The present case control study included 60 patients on HD for at least three years. In addition, there were age and sex-matched healthy subjects who constitutes the control group. Nutritional status was evaluated using the malnutrition inflammation score (MIS). Muscle wasting in the present study was evaluated using the lean tissue index (LTI) as assessed by the body composition monitor (BCM). Rectus Femoris Muscle (RFM) thickness was also measured as indicator for nutritional status of patient. RESULTS: The present study included 60 HD patients, and ageand sex-matched healthy controls. Patients expressed significantly higher myostatin levels when compared to controls [median (IQR): 221.3 (153.5-688.2) versus 144.8 (97.0-281.7), p < 0.001]. According to MIS, patients were classified into those with no/mild malnutrition (n = 22) and others with moderate/severe malnutrition (n = 38). Comparison between the two subgroups revealed that the former group had significantly lower myostatin levels [167.7 (150.3-236.3) versus 341.7 (160.9-955.9), p = 0.004]. According to LTI, patients were classified into those with muscle wasting (n = 23) and others without muscle wasting (n = 37). Comparative analysis showed that patients in the former group had significantly higher myostatin levels [775.1 (325.1-2133.7) versus 161.8 (142.6-302.3), p < 0.001]. CONCLUSIONS: Myostatin seems to be a promising marker for identification of malnutrition and muscle wasting in HD patients.

OBJECTIVE: To point out our experience and assess the efficacy and safety of real-time ultrasound-guided central internal jugular vein (IJV) catheterization in the treatment of hemodialysis patients. METHODS: This retrospective study comprised 150 patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) who had real-time ultrasonography (US)-guided IJV HD catheters placed in our hospital between March 2019 and March 2021. Patients were examined for their demographic data, etiology, site of catheter insertion, type (acute or chronic) of renal failure, technical success, operative time, number of needle punctures, and procedure-related complications. Patients who have had multiple catheter insertions, prior catheterization challenges, poor compliance, obesity, bony deformity, and coagulation disorders were considered at high-operative risk. RESULTS: All patients experienced technical success. In terms of patient clinical features, an insignificant difference was observed between the normal and high-risk groups (p-value > 0.05). Of the 150 catheters, 62 (41.3%) were placed in high-risk patients. The first-attempt success rate was 89.8% for the normal group and 72.5% for the high-risk group (p = 0.006). IJV cannulation took less time in the normal-risk group compared to the highrisk group (21.2 ± 0.09) minutes vs (35.4 ± 0.11) minutes, (p < 0.001). There were no serious complications. During the placing of the catheter in the internal jugular vein, four patients (6.4%) experienced arterial puncture in the high-risk group. Two participants in each group got a small neck hematoma. One patient developed a pneumothorax in the high-risk group, which was managed with an intercostal chest tube insertion. CONCLUSIONS: Even in the high-risk group, the real-time US-guided placement of a central catheter into the IJV is associated with a low complication rate and a high success rate. Even under US guidance, experience lowers complication rates. Real-time USguided is recommended to be used routinely during central venous catheter insertion.

Multitarget anticancer drugs are more superior than single target drugs regarding patient compliance, drug adverse effects, drug-drug interactions, drug resistance as well as pharmaceutical industry economics. Dysregulation of both VEGFR-2 and c-Met tyrosine kinases (TKs) could result in development and progression of different human cancers. Herein, we reported a novel series of 3-phenylquinazolin-2,4(1H,3H)-diones with thiourea moiety as dual VEGFR-2/c-Met TKs. Compared to sorafenib, cabozantinib went behind VEGFR-2 inhibition to target c-Met TK. The dual VEGFR-2/c-Met inhibitory activity of cabozantinib is due to a longer HB domain than that of sorafenib. Based on pharmacophore of cabozantinib analogues, we designed new dual VEGFR-2/c-Met TKs. We synthesized the target compounds via a new single pot three-component reaction. The cytotoxic activity of synthesized compounds was conducted against HCT-116 colorectal cancer cell line. Compounds 3c and 3e exhibited the highest cytotoxic activity against HCT-116 cell line (IC50 1.184 and 3.403 µM, respectively). The in vitro enzyme inhibitory activity was carried out against both VEGFR-2 and c-Met TKs. Compound 3e has the highest inhibitory activity against both VEGFR-2/c-Met (IC50 = 83 and 48 nM, respectively). Docking studies showed that α-oxo moiety in quinazoline ring formed hydrogen bond HB with Met1160 residue in the adenine region of c-Met TK.

Aims: To explore university students' levels of stress, stressors, and their coping style. Methods: A cross-sectional correlational design with a convenience sample (n = 676) of university students who completed the Student-Life Stress Inventory (SSI) and Coping Strategies Indicator (CSI) was used. Findings. Overall, two-thirds of the participant reported moderate levels of stress. Students with chronic illness, living alone, low CGPA, and having exams today experienced a statistically higher mean level of stress. Students who are living alone used the "avoidance" method more significantly and the "social support" method significantly less compared with students who are living with their families and friends. Conclusion: This study concurs with others that university students are prone to distress. To our knowledge, this is the first study in the region to explore the students' coping skills. Some of the employed coping and associated factors could be used to lay the groundwork for evidence-based prevention and mitigation.

PURPOSE: For patients with a failed forearm autogenous fistula (AF) and an exhausted cephalic vein, there is controversy about whether a brachial basilic AF with transposition or an arteriovenous prosthetic bridging graft (BG) must be the second vascular access option. This work measured and compared these two modalities according to patency rates, complications, and revisions. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective study of 104 cases that had either a brachial basilic AF (72) or an Arteriovenous BG (32). Technical success, operative complications, procedurerelated mortality, maturation time, functional primary, secondary, and overall patency rates were all assessed. RESULTS: Technical success was obtained in all participants. No procedure-linked mortality. Maturation time for BGs was significantly shorter than AFs. The complication rate was significantly higher in BGs than in AFs. The most prevalent complication was access thrombosis. The functional primary patency rate was significantly higher in AF than in BG at 12-month followup: 77.7% vs 53.1% (p < 0.012). secondary patency rate was higher in AF than in BG at 1-year follow-up 62.5% vs 42.8% (p = 0.063), respectively. In addition, BGs required more interventions to preserve patency. CONCLUSIONS: AF had higher primary, secondary and overall functional patency rates and needed fewer procedures to keep patency than BGs. Cases that need early vascular access as a result of central venous catheter complications or who have a reduced life expectancy may benefit from BGs.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the effect of adding weight shift training to a weight loss program on the risk of falling, fear of falling, overall stability, anteroposterior stability, mediolateral stability, and isometric knee torque in young obese women. DESIGN: A single-blinded, randomized controlled study was performed. Sixty women, 18 to 46 yrs old, were randomly assigned either to the study or the control group. The participants in the study group were given weight-shifting training plus a weight reduction program; the control group received only a weight-reduction program. The interventions were performed for 12 wks. At baseline and after 12 wks of training, the risk of falling, fear of falling, overall stability, anteroposterior stability, mediolateral stability, and isometric knee torque were all examined. RESULTS: There were statistically significant differences in risk of falling, fear of falling, isometric knee torque, and overall, anteroposterior, and mediolateral stability indices, in favor of the study group, after 3 mos of training ( P < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Weight shift training combined with weight reduction was more beneficial than weight reduction alone in decreasing the risk of falling and fear of falling and improving isometric knee torque and overall, anteroposterior, and mediolateral stability indices. It could be used for treating balance problems and weakness around the knee joint in obese women. Magnetic field is used as an adjunct therapy for pain control and relief of musculoskeletal pain conditions as Fibromyalgia. It is regarded as more natural and less harmful alternative to analgesic compounds. The exact mechanism underlying these positive effects is still to be determined. Twenty-three patients diagnosed with Fibromyalgia condition were included in this study, and subjected to extremely low magnetic field treatment sessions. The treatment protocol based on exposing patients to gradually increased magnetic field strength that starts with 0.1 µT at the beginning, and increased gradually to 100 µT (3.33 µT/min). UV-Visible, mid-IR and fluorescence characteristics of whole blood, erythrocytes and hemoglobin were investigated; in addition to RBCs-osmotic fragility measurements. The obtained results were analyzed according to control-sham exposed patients. We observed marked changes in the blood (and/or its constituents) absorption spectra of fibromyalgia patients that indicate an enhancement in the energetic pathways and increased hemoglobin-oxygen affinity; in addition, the osmotic fragility measurements show that erythrocytes were characterized by increased elasticity and rehydration. The analyses of infrared spectra show that magnetic field treatment was associated with changes in the erythrocytes skeleton where α-helix component of protein secondary structure is dominant. This study provides scientific evidence that pain relief associated with extremely low magnetic field treatment can be directly related to its systemic effects as well as the enhancement of the cellular activities.

OBJECTIVE: Truth-telling in oncology is a major challenge, particularly in the absence of disclosure protocols in Egypt and the lack of Egyptian studies examining patients' preferences regarding cancer disclosure. This study aimed to reveal the preferences of patients seeking care at the National Cancer Institute - Cairo University regarding disclosing cancer diagnosis and the type and amount of information to be told. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 200 patients selected consecutively from those attending the outpatient clinics of the National Cancer Institute - Cairo University. Face-to-face interviews were performed with the patients according to a structured questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of five parts: socio-demographic characteristics, knowledge about cancer disease, attitudes towards cancer disease, experience during the disclosure of the diagnosis, and preferences regarding disclosure of cancer diagnosis. RESULTS: Most patients (89.5%) preferred to know the diagnosis. Of them, 94.4% wished to know from the physician. No agreement was found between most patients' preferences and physicians' practice. On multivariate logistic regression analysis, patients' education was the only significant predictor of the preference to know the diagnosis (OR = 5.298, 95% CI = 1.258 - 22.301, P = 0.023). CONCLUSION: Patients have a great desire to know the diagnosis and other information related to treatment and prognosis.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a common systemic inflammatory disease. Collagen triple helix repeat containing-1 (CTHRC1) is a unique gene product able to reduce collagen deposition. The present study aimed to assess CTHRC1 level in RA patients and to uncover its relation to clinical, laboratory and radiological findings. Methods: The study included 60 adult RA patients. In addition, there were 60 control subjects who included patients with osteoarthritis (n = 20) and reactive arthritis (n = 20) and healthy controls (n = 20). Serum CTHRC1 levels were assessed by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Disease activity was calculated using the Disease Activity Score (DAS28-CRP). Radiological damage was evaluated using the Simple Erosion Narrowing Score (SENS). Results: There was significantly higher serum CTHRC1 levels in RA patients when compared to OA, ReA and control groups [median (IQR): 4.66 (1.68-11.7) versus 1.88 (1.14-2.94), 1.55 (0.98-3.15) and 1.14 (0.85-1.3) mg/dL, respectively, p < 0.001]. There was significantly higher CTHRC1 levels in patients with higher disease activity [median (IQR): 2.23 (1.4-4.73) versus 6.55 (4.66-12.0) mg/dL, p = 0.004]. Patients with higher SENS had significantly higher CTHRC1 [median (IQR): 1.99 (1.4-4.66) versus 9.75 (4.39-12.63) mg/dL, p < 0.001] and DAS28 [median (IQR): 4.25 (2.9-5.2) versus 5.4 (4.65-5.8), p = 0.01]. Conclusion: Serum CTHRC1 levels are related to disease severity and radiological affection in RA patients.

Glycopolymer materials have emerged as a significant biopolymer class that has piqued the scientific community's attention due to their potential applications. Recently, they have been found to be a unique synthetic biomaterial; glycopolymer materials have also been used for various applications, including direct therapeutic methods, medical adhesives, drug/gene delivery systems, and biosensor applications. Therefore, for the next stage of biomaterial research, it is essential to understand current breakthroughs in glycopolymer-based materials research. This review discusses the most widely utilized synthetic methodologies for glycopolymer-based materials, their properties based on structure-function interactions, and the significance of these materials in biosensing applications, among other topics. When creating glycopolymer materials, contemporary polymerization methods allow precise control over molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, chemical activity, and polymer architecture. This review concludes with a discussion of the challenges and complexities of glycopolymer-based biosensors, in addition to their potential applications in the future.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of mechanical traction from different knee angles on pain, physical function, and range of motion in patients with knee osteoarthritis. DESIGN: A single-blinded, randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Outpatient public and governmental Hospital clinics. PARTICIPANTS: One hundred and twenty patients with knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned into 4 equal groups with 30 patients in each group. INTERVENTIONS: Group (A) received conventional physiotherapy(CPT) treatment; group (B) received CPT with knee traction from full extension, group (C) received CPT with knee traction from 90° flexion, while group (D) received CPT with knee traction from 20° flexion. Interventions were applied 3 sessions a week for 4 weeks. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS: Visual analog scale (VAS), knee passive range of motion and the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Osteoarthritis Index (WOMAC) were measured at baseline, immediately after 4 weeks of intervention, and after 4 weeks of no intervention as a follow-up. RESULTS: After eight weeks, the mean (SD) for VAS scores were 30.97 ± 8.68, 24.0 ± 8.8, 15.43 ± 6.31, and 16.17 ± 6.11 mm; for total WOMAC scores were 26.77 ± 9.19, 20.3 ± 8.52, 13.27 ± 6.25, and 13.43 ± 7.14 for groups A, B, C and D, respectively. The three traction groups showed statistically significant changes in pain scores, physical function, and total WOMAC, but not for knee passive range of motion, in favor of traction groups C and D than the conventional group (P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Traction from 90°and 20° of knee flexion was found superior to full extension knee in improving pain and physical function, but not for knee passive range of motion, in patients with knee osteoarthritis.

INTRODUCTION: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (iCCA) are the two main histological subtypes of primary liver cancer. Estimates of the burden of liver cancer by subtype are needed to facilitate development and evaluation of liver cancer control globally. We provide worldwide, regional and national estimates of HCC and iCCA incidence using high-quality data. METHODS: We used population-based cancer registry data on liver cancer cases by histological subtype from 95 countries to compute the sex- and country-specific distributions of HCC, iCCA and other specified histology. Subtype distributions were applied to estimates of total liver cancer cases for 2018 from the Global Cancer Observatory. Age-standardised incidence rates (ASRs) were calculated. RESULTS: There were an estimated 826,000 cases of liver cancer globally in 2018: 661,000 HCC (ASR 7.3 cases per 100,000); 123,000 iCCA (ASR 1.4) and 42,000 other specified histology (ASR 0.5). HCC contributed 80% of the world total liver cancer burden followed by iCCA (14.9%) and other specified histology (5.1%). HCC rates were highest in Eastern Asia (ASR 14.8), Northern Africa (ASR 13.2) and South-Eastern Asia (ASR 9.5). Rates of iCCA were highest in South-Eastern Asia (ASR 2.9), Eastern Asia (ASR 2.0), Northern Europe, the Caribbean and Central America and Oceania (ASR all 1.8). CONCLUSION: We have shown the importance of uncovering the distinct patterns of the major subtypes of liver cancer. The use of these estimates is critical to further develop public health policy to reduce the burden of liver cancer and monitor progress in controlling HCC and iCCA globally.

Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a significant health issue worldwide.. We attempted to fulfill the molecular mechanisms of epigenetic and genetic factors associated with chronic HBV (CHBV). Expression levels of the lncRNA growth arrest-specific 5 (GAS5) and miR-137 and their corresponding SNPs, rs2067079 (C/T) and rs1625579 (G/T) were analyzed in 117 CHBV patients and 120 controls to investigate the probable association between these biomarkers and CHBV pathogenesis in the Egyptian population. Serum expression levels of GAS5 and miR-137 were significantly down-regulated in cases vs controls. Regarding GAS5 (rs2067079), the mutant TT genotype showed an increased risk of CHBV (p < 0.001), while the dominant CC was a protective factor (p = 0.004). Regarding miR-137 rs1625579, the mutant genotype TT was reported as a risk factor for CHBV (p < 0.001) and the normal GG genotype was a protective factor, p < 0.001. The serum GAS5 was significantly higher in the mutant TT genotype of GAS5 SNP as compared to the other genotypes (p = 0.007). Concerning miR-137 rs1625579, the mutant TT genotype was significantly associated with a lower serum expression level of miR-137 (p = 0.018). We revealed the dysregulated expression levels of GAS5 and miR-137 linked to their functioning SNPs were associated with CHBV risk and might act as potential therapeutic targets.

In Qatar, one out of every ten patients admitted to the hospitals is in urgent need of a blood transfusion or blood products. The aims of this study are as follows: (1) to assess the level of awareness and knowledge about blood donation and (2) to identify the factors that contribute to the willingness to donate blood among young adults. A cross-sectional survey using a constructed questionnaire was conducted among students at Qatar University. A total of 590 responses were collected, out of which 423 were suitable for analysis. Only 72 out of 472 (15%) participants were blood donors. The chi-square test and t-test were then used to study the association of blood donation status with different factors. Significant values were considered to be p ≤ 0.5. Gender and age were found to be significantly associated with blood donation status, with a higher frequency of donation among males and adults above the age of 24 years old. On the other hand, the total knowledge score was found to not be significantly associated with blood donation status with a mean score of 60.5% for both groups (blood donors, non-blood donors). The most common motivators that encouraged blood donors were donating to help people, followed by having a blood mobile unit come to your place, whereas the most common barriers reported by non-blood donors were failing to meet the requirements, followed by "never having been asked to give blood". This is the first study in Qatar to assess blood donation status. It provides insights that would help in developing effective strategies for the recruitment and retention of young adult blood donors in Qatar and countries with similar cultures. Raising awareness about blood donation, along with providing more mobile blood donation units at public places, will aid in increasing the frequency of blood donation among young adults.

BACKGROUND: Obesity, one of the most common chronic health conditions worldwide, is a multifactorial disease caused by complex genetic and environmental interactions. Several association studies have revealed a considerable number of candidate loci for obesity; however, the genotype-phenotype correlations remain unclear. To date, no comprehensive systematic review has been conducted to investigate the genetic risk factors for obesity among Arabs. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to systematically review the genetic polymorphisms that are significantly associated with obesity in Arabs. METHODS: We searched four literature databases (PubMed, Science Direct, Scopus, and Google Scholar) from inception until May 2020 to obtain all reported genetic data related to obesity in Arab populations. Quality assessment and data extraction were performed individually by three investigators. RESULTS: In total, 59 studies comprising a total of 15,488 cases and 9,760 controls were included in the systematic review. A total of 76 variants located within or near 49 genes were reported to be significantly associated with obesity. Among the 76 variants, two were described as unique to Arabs, as they have not been previously reported in other populations, and 19 were reported to be distinctively associated with obesity in Arabs but not in non-Arab populations. CONCLUSIONS: There appears to be a unique genetic and clinical susceptibility profile of obesity in Arab patients.

INTRODUCTIONS: Evaluating the epidemiology, pattern, and contributing factors of sexual dysfunction in end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients is the cornerstone in understanding and enhancing these patients' quality of life. In this study, we aimed to identify the different patterns of erectile dysfunction (ED) among 100 patients undergoing hemodialysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A single-center, cross-sectional, study was conducted on 100 patients with ESRD on hemodialysis. Patients were assessed using the International index of erectile dysfunction (IIEF) and Doppler assessment of the penis. RESULTS: A total of 100 patients were included in this study with a mean age of 48.77 ± 9.66 years old. The mean erectile index was 7.10 ± 4.62; while the mean free and total testosterone were 10.07 ± 7.69 and 2.93 ± 1.4 ng/dL, respectively. Overall, 67% of the patients had abnormal hormonal levels. Concerning the penile vasculature, 71% of the patients had arterogenic importance and 19% had venous impotence. The comparative analysis demonstrated that hypertensive patients had lower erectile index (p = 0.002). In addition, smokers had lower erectile index (p < 0.001). There was statistical significance between normal hormonal and abnormal hormone level according to erectile index, with lower index in patients with abnormal hormonal level (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION: In conclusion, our findings indicate that the most common causes of ED with renal failure were hormonal disturbance, including testosterone, and prolactin. Hypertension and smoking are major contributing factors that should be managed carefully to reduce the risk of ED and improve the quality of life.

BACKGROUND: To identify and report flaws of Internet-published articles in the Journal of the Egyptian National Cancer Institute (JENCI), Cairo University, through a retrospective documentary study on articles published during the period from 2011 to 2016. All sections were reviewed against a collective checklist. Articles were grouped by publication year into 2 intervals: early (from 2011 to 2013) and recent (from 2014 to 2016) to identify changes in study characteristics over time. RESULTS: The study included 139 original articles. Half of the titles represented aim and 9.4% represented study design. Abstracts were concise, clear, with structured writing format in 98.6%, 93.5%, and 35.3%, respectively. Most introductions included the study aim, while 41% had a rationale. Study timing was reported in 59.0%, while the study design was reported in 25.9%. Inclusion and exclusion criteria were clearly reported in 43.1% and 40.1%, respectively. Statistical methods were mentioned in 80.6%, complete in 30.4%, and appropriate in 85.7%. Four studies reported sample size estimation. Only 52.5% and 58.3% of results were exhaustive and answer the research question, respectively. Incorrect statistical calculations occurred in 41.0%, inappropriate statistical tests or descriptive parameter selection in 26.6%, while inappropriate test application occurred in 49.1%. About 60% of discussions did not completely cover results, 31.7% fully justified the findings, 56.1% followed a logical flow, and 36.7% had contradiction within the text. Conclusions were mostly linked to aim, imprecise, and extrapolating beyond results. On comparing both periods, only a significant less misuse of statistical terms, more reporting conflict of interest, more missing references for cited texts in the recent period, and more participation of NCI over other institutes in the early period were found. CONCLUSION: Articles published in JENCI (from 2011 to 2016) had many methodological and reporting defects and some points of strength. Using the collective checklist developed by this study, continuous training of researchers, involving epidemiologists throughout the whole research process, and applying strict journal reporting and publication rules should be encouraged.

BACKGROUND: Altered regulation of the complement system is associated with multiple kidney diseases. CD35, CD55 and CD59 regulate the complement system, and changes in their expression have previously been linked with kidney disease. This study assessed whether changes in the expression levels of these proteins are associated specifically with chronic kidney disease (CKD) to understand its pathogenesis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sixty CKD patients and 60 age-matched controls were enrolled and divided into two groups: Group I (n=30 pediatric patients and n=30 controls) and Group II (n=30 adult patients and n=30 controls). The expression of CD35, CD55 and CD59 on peripheral blood cells was evaluated by flow cytometry as the proportion of positive cells expressing the marker and mean fluorescence intensity (MFI), also the relation of these markers to the stage of CKD was also evaluated. RESULTS: Pediatric and adult CKD patients had significantly lower proportion of erythrocytes expressing CD35, CD55 and CD59 than healthy controls (P<0.001). In pediatric CKD patients, there was no significant difference in the three studied markers on neutrophils, lymphocytes and monocytes. The changes in expression of CD35, CD55 and CD59 on leukocytes were more pronounced in adult patients, who had lower proportion of CD59-positive neutrophils, CD35- and CD59-positive lymphocytes, and CD59-positive monocytes, as well as lower expression of CD59 on neutrophils and monocytes than adult controls (P<0.001, P=0.019, P<0.001, P=0.026, P<0.001 and P=0.003, respectively). The eGFR directly correlated with the proportion of positivity of some of those markers on peripheral leukocytes while there was inverse correlation between the disease stage and the same markers. CONCLUSION: There are alterations in the patterns of expression of complement regulatory proteins CD35, CD55 and CD59 on peripheral blood cells of patients with CKD compared with healthy controls.
