RESUMEN

2D materials, such as transition metal dichalcogenides, are ideal platforms for spin-to-charge conversion (SCC) as they possess strong spin-orbit coupling (SOC), reduced dimensionality and crystal symmetries as well as tuneable band structure, compared to metallic structures. Moreover, SCC can be tuned with the number of layers, electric field, or strain. Here, SCC in epitaxially grown 2D PtSe2 by THz spintronic emission is studied since its 1T crystal symmetry and strong SOC favor SCC. High quality of as-grown PtSe2 layers is demonstrated, followed by in situ ferromagnet deposition by sputtering that leaves the PtSe2 unaffected, resulting in well-defined clean interfaces as evidenced with extensive characterization. Through this atomic growth control and using THz spintronic emission, the unique thickness-dependent electronic structure of PtSe2 allows the control of SCC. Indeed, the transition from the inverse Rashba-Edelstein effect (IREE) in 1-3 monolayers (ML) to the inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) in multilayers (>3 ML) of PtSe2 enabling the extraction of the perpendicular spin diffusion length and relative strength of IREE and ISHE is demonstrated. This band structure flexibility makes PtSe2 an ideal candidate to explore the underlying mechanisms and engineering of the SCC as well as for the development of tuneable THz spintronic emitters.

INTRODUCTION: Owing to evolution of parasite strains that are resistant to existing antimalarial drugs, research for novel antimalarial medicines is progressing on numerous fronts. PURPOSE: Herein, we evaluated the in vivo anti-Plasmodium berghei activity of ß-ionone including its ameliorative potential towards P. berghei-associated anaemia and oxidative organ damage. METHODS: Mice were infected with chloroquine-sensitive strain of P. berghei and then treated with ß-ionone at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight (BW) for seven days. The parasitemia, packed cell volume and redox sensitive biomarkers in the liver, brain and spleen were estimated. RESULTS: Our result showed that ß-ionone, in a dose-dependent fashion, significantly (p < 0.05) repressed the multiplication of P. berghei. More so, the compound, at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg BW, significantly (p < 0.05) mitigated anaemia and organ damage induced by P. berghei. CONCLUSION: Overall, the findings demonstrated that ß-ionone has antiplasmodial actions and plays a mitigative role against P. berghei-induced anaemia and oxidative organ damage.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented changes to educational institutions, forcing their closure and a subsequent shift to online education to cater to student learning requirements. However, successful online learning depends on several factors and may also vary between countries. As such, this cross-sectional study sought to investigate how engagement of university students, a major driver of online learning, was influenced by course content, online interaction, student acceptance, and satisfaction with online learning, as well as self-efficacy across nine countries (China, India, Iran, Italy, Malaysia, Portugal, Serbia, Turkey, and the United Arab Emirates) during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using a questionnaire-based approach, data collected from 6,489 university students showed that student engagement was strongly linked to perception of the quality of the course content and online interactions (p < .001). The current study also indicated that online interactions are a major determinant of academic efficacy but only if mediated by engagement within the online learning context. A negative correlation between student engagement and satisfaction with online learning was found, demonstrating the importance of students being engaged behaviorally, emotionally, and cognitively to feel satisfied with learning. Academic efficacy and student satisfaction were explained by course content, online interaction, and online learning acceptance, being mediated by student engagement. Student satisfaction and, to a lesser degree academic efficacy, were also associated with online learning acceptance. Overall, the structural equation model was a good fit for the data collected from all nine countries (CFI = .947, TLI = .943; RMSEA = .068; SRMR = .048), despite differences in the percentage variations explained by each factor (no invariance), likely due to differences in levels of technology use, learning management systems, and the preparedness of teachers to migrate to full online instruction. Despite limitations, the results of this study highlight the most important factors affecting online learning, providing insight into potential approaches for improving student experiences in online learning environments.

INTRODUCTION: The lack of a clear and reproducible methodology for evaluating potential organ donors, which ensures traceability in the process, can compromise the number of utilized organ donors and the transplantation quality. METHODOLOGY: We developed a reproducible and safe method for the evaluation and validation of Potential Organ Donors (PD) based on 2 principles:1) Updated knowledge of absolute contraindications for organ donation and, 2) Decision making supported by 3 questions. The first principle was absolute contraindications. They were categorized into 4 groups: A) Serologies, B) Tumors, C) Infections, and D) Biological risk for transmission of infectious diseases and cancer. The second principle was the decision-making questions: A) What is the cause of death? B) Are there absolute contraindications to organ donation? and, C) Are there relative contraindications to organ donation? Each PD was subjected to the same methodology. The questions were answered after knowing the PD's clinical file. The PD was valid only if the set of answers adhered to an established matrix respecting different guidelines. The same physician evaluated each PD in all OPO. We applied in 4 different OPO, 3 of them in the State of São Paulo/Brazil and one in the United Arab Emirates, in different periods, including the SARS-COV 2 pandemic. RESULTS: OPO­SCSP, before the methodology (2007): 62 utilized donors, 205 transplants. After the methodology has been started (2008/2009/2010): 117, 154, 186 utilized donors and 348, 533, 487 transplants, respectively. 2) OPO-BTU, before the methodology (2009): 9 utilized donors and 19 transplants. After the methodology has been started (2010/2011/2012): 17, 36, 49 utilized donors and 38, 90, 143 transplants, respectively. 3) OPO-IDPC, before the methodology (2017): 93 utilized donors and 202 transplants. After the methodology has been started (2018/2019/2020): 107, 177, 187 utilized donors and 219, 395, 356 transplants, respectively. 4) UAE OPO, before the methodology (2020): 9 utilized donors and 35 transplants. After the methodology has been started (2021/2022): 39, 55 utilized donors and 147, 203 transplants, respectively. The percentage increase after the beginning of the methodology, considering the last year evaluated: 1) OPO-SCSP: 195% (Utilized donors) and 137% (Transplants); 2) OPO-BTU: 444% (Utilized donors) and 652% (Transplants); C) OPO-IDPC: 101% (Utilized Donors) and 76% (Transplants); 4) OPO-EOTC (United Arab Emirates): 511% (Utilized donors) and 480% (Transplants). CONCLUSION: The methodology used demonstrates that it can directly contribute to increasing the percentage of effective donors and transplants. The increase in donors ranged from 101% to 444%. The percentage growth of transplantation ranged from 76% to 652%. Indirectly, an increase the referrals was observed, motivated by frequent contact with OPO members and ICU professionals.

INTRODUCTION: Handover is crucial during the transfer of patient care between healthcare professionals.Successful handover maintains patients' safety and high-quality care. The electronic handover of patients' information is achievable, feasible, and potentially improves the quality of patient care. However, the introduction of the electronic handover is relatively recent and challenging for healthcare providers, especially nurses. OBJECTIVES: Since Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Humanitarian City (SBAHC) has recently implemented an electronic handover system among nurses, the main aim of the current study was to develop a tool to assess the perception and barriers to electronic handover systems among nurses working at SBAHC and evaluate its psychometric properties. METHODS: The tool content and face validity were assessed by the content validity ratio (CVR). Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were used as validity methods, while the test-retest and inter-item consistency were used as reliability measures. The sample size was planned as five times the number of questions and a total of 200 nurses participated in the study. RESULTS: The criteria required for factor analysis were met as indicated by the results of the Kaiser-Mayer-Olkin test and Bartlett's test of sphericity. The reliability results showed a Cronbach's alpha coefficient ranging from 0.858 to 0.910 for the perception subscale and from 0.564 to 0.789 for the barrier subscale, and an overall interclass correlation of 0.986, p<0.001. CONCLUSIONS: The developed SBAHC electronic handover tool was valid and reliable, and it is advisable to consider it at the initial stages of implanting an electronic handover system to identify obstacles that are faced by the staff to be considered and addressed by the higher management.

The parasite responsible for causing malaria infection, Plasmodium, is known to exhibit resistance to a number of already available treatments. This has prompted the continue search for new antimalarial drugs ranging from medicinal plant parts to synthetic compounds. In lieu of this, the mitigative action of the bioactive compound, eugenol towards P. berghei-induced anaemia and oxidative organ damage was investigated following a demonstration of in vitro and in vivo antiplasmodial effects. Mice were infected with chloroquine-sensitive strain of P. berghei and thereafter treated with eugenol at doses of 10 and 20 mg/kg body weight (BW) for seven days. The packed cell volume and redox sensitive biomarkers in the liver, brain and spleen were measured. Our result demonstrated that eugenol significantly (p < 0.05) ameliorated the P. berghei-associated anaemia at a dose of 10 mg/kg BW. In addition, the compound, at a dose of 10 mg/kg BW, significantly (p < 0.05) alleviated the P. berghei-induced organ damage. This evidently confirmed that eugenol plays an ameliorative role towards P. berghei-related pathological alterations. Hence, the study opens up a new therapeutic use of eugenol against plasmodium parasite.

AIM: Student' engagement is a predictor of various educational outcomes, and it is a key factor in perceived learning. This study aims to investigate the psychometric properties of University Student Engagement Inventory (USEI) among students of Arab universities. METHODS: In this cross-sectional methodological study 525 Arab university students participated. Data was collected from December 2020 to January 2021. The confirmatory factor analysis used for construct validity, reliability and Invariance analysis for Sex were evaluated. RESULTS: Confirmatory factor analysis indices confirmed the good model fit to the data (CFIscl=0.977, NFIscl=0.974, TLIscl=0.972, SRMR = 0.036, RMSEAscl=0.111, n = 525). All tested models showed strong invariance of the USEI between male and females. There was also evidence of convergent (AVE > 0.7 for all the scales) and discriminant validity (HTMT > 0.75 for all scales). Reliability evidence for the USEI measures in the sample of Arabic students was high (αordinal and ω above 0.86). CONCLUSION: The results of this study support the validity and reliability of the USEI with 15 items and 3 factors and demonstrate the importance of students' engagement in the learning process, academic progress, and self-directed learning.

Microglia, innate immune cells of the brain, constantly monitor the dynamic changes of the brain microenvironment under physiological conditions and respond in time. Growing evidence suggests that microglia-mediated neuroinflammation plays an important role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease. In this study, we investigated that the expression of IFITM3 was significantly upregulated in microglia under the Aß treatment, and knockdown of IFITM3 in vitro suppressed the M1-like polarization of microglia. Moreover, IFITM3 was regulated by cGAS-STING signaling in activated microglia, and inhibition of cGAS-STING signaling reduces IFITM3 expression. Taken together, our findings suggested that the cGAS-STING-IFITM3 axis may be involved in Aß-induced neuroinflammation in microglia.

RESUMEN

2D materials offer the ability to expose their electronic structure to manipulations by a proximity effect. This could be harnessed to craft properties of 2D interfaces and van der Waals heterostructures in devices and quantum materials. We explore the possibility to create an artificial spin polarized electrode from graphene through proximity interaction with a ferromagnetic insulator to be used in a magnetic tunnel junction (MTJ). Ferromagnetic insulator/graphene artificial electrodes were fabricated and integrated in MTJs based on spin analyzers. Evidence of the emergence of spin polarization in proximitized graphene layers was observed through the occurrence of tunnel magnetoresistance. We deduced a spin dependent splitting of graphene's Dirac band structure (∼15 meV) induced by the proximity effect, potentially leading to full spin polarization and opening the way to gating. The extracted spin signals illustrate the potential of 2D quantum materials based on proximity effects to craft spintronics functionalities, from vertical MTJs memory cells to logic circuits.

Background: Contact tracing is a traditional pillar of infectious disease control, especially for illnesses involving direct transmission from person to person, such as COVID-19. Several challenges have arisen from COVID-19 contact tracing activities, particularly in low-resource settings. These include refusal of positive clients to disclose their close contacts, difficulties in conducting risk assessment for contacts traced, among others. Objectives: To explore the activities and identify challenges of contact tracing during COVID -19 pandemic response in a tertiary hospital in Northwestern Nigeria from May, 2020 to March, 2021. Methodology: Amixed method approach was done with quantitative secondary data analysis of COVID-19 contacts traced, and qualitative assessment through Key Informant Interviews (KII) of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital staff involved in COVID-19 outbreak response during the period. Results: Atotal of 2,249 clients were tested for COVID-19, of which 925 (41.1%) were healthcare workers. The identified challenges included problems with contact identification, delay in notification of results, refusal to disclose contacts by cases, contacts refusing to allow risk assessment, and health workers being overwhelmed by the task of contact tracing. Conclusion: Challenges identified include refusal of cases to disclose their contacts, overwhelming number of contacts, and delay in notification of results. There is need to institute contact tracing protocols to mandate cases to disclose their contacts, train more manpower to reduce the burden of contact tracing, and improve the notification of results.

Magneto-ionics is an emerging actuation mechanism to control the magnetic properties of materials via voltage-driven ion motion. This effect largely relies on the strength and penetration of the induced electric field into the target material, the amount of generated ion transport pathways, and the ionic mobility inside the magnetic media. Optimizing all these factors in a simple way is a huge challenge, although highly desirable for technological applications. Here, we demonstrate that the introduction of suitable transition-metal elements to binary nitride compounds can drastically boost magneto-ionics. More specifically, we show that the attained magneto-ionic effects in CoN films (i.e., saturation magnetization, toggling speeds, and cyclability) can be drastically enhanced through 10% substitution of Co by Mn in the thin-film composition. Incorporation of Mn leads to transformation from nanocrystalline into amorphous-like structures, as well as from metallic to semiconducting behaviors, resulting in an increase of N-ion transport channels. Ab initio calculations reveal a lower energy barrier for CoMn-N compared to Co-N that provides a fundamental understanding of the crucial role of Mn addition in the voltage-driven magnetic effects. These results constitute an important step forward toward enhanced voltage control of magnetism via electric field-driven ion motion.

Background and Aim: Hemodialysis treatment saves the life of people with end-stage renal disease (ERDS), but does not prevent the suffering of the disease, anxiety, hopelessness, and so on. Many studies have been performed on self-care behaviors as well as body image in different patients, but so far, no research has been done to investigate the relationship between self-care behavior and body image concerns in hemodialysis patients. Therefore, the aims of this study are to determine the relationship between self-care behavior and body image concern in patients undergoing hemodialysis. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional design was used to evaluate Self-care Behavior and Concerns about Body Image in a convenience sample of 280 patients with ERDS. Measures included demographic factors, health characteristics, and validated instruments of the study constructs Body Image Concern Questionnaire (BICI) and Assessment of self-care behaviors with arteriovenous fistula (ASBHD-AVF). Results: This study showed that self-care behaviors have the ability to predict body image concerns. There was a negative and significant relationship between self-care behavior and body image concern (B = -0.162, ß = -0.140, p = 0.020). These variables explain 7.5% of predictors. Conclusion: Although the findings of the present study showed that increasing age and improving the level of self-care behaviors in patients undergoing hemodialysis reduces body image anxiety, but women were the strongest predictor of body image anxiety.

Objective: To detect the microstructural changes in patients with cognitive impairment after acute cerebral infarction using diffusion kurtosis imaging (DKI). Materials and Methods: A total of 70 patients with acute cerebral infarction were divided into two groups: 35 patients with cognitive impairment (VCI group), and 35 patients without cognitive impairment (N-VCI group), according to mini-mental state examination (MMSE) score. Healthy individuals (n = 36) were selected as the normal control (NORM) group. DKI parameters from 28 different brain regions of interest (ROIs) were selected, measured, and compared. Results: VCI group patients had significantly higher mean diffusion (MD) and significantly lower mean kurtosis (MK) values in most ROIs than those in the N-VCI and NORM groups. DKI parameters in some ROIs correlated significantly with MMSE score. The splenium of corpus callosum MD was most correlated with MMSE score, the correlation coefficient was -0.652, and this parameter had good ability to distinguish patients with VCI from healthy controls; at the optimal cut-off MD value (0.9915), sensitivity was 91.4%, specificity 100%, and the area under the curve value 0.964. Conclusions: Pathological changes in some brain regions may underlie cognitive impairment after acute cerebral infarction, especially the splenium of corpus callosum. These preliminary results suggest that, in patients with VCI, DKI may be useful for assessing microstructural tissue damage.

Objective: Sleep disturbance is one of the most prevalent problems in post-menopausal females. The current research intended to evaluate the effects of Dracocephalum on sleep disorder in post-menopausal females. Method : The current study is a randomized, double-blind controlled trial, in which 110 post-menopausal women were randomly allocated to Dracocephalum or placebo groups. The intervention group took Dracocephalum capsules containing 250 mg Dracocephalum extract twice daily for one month. While, the placebo group took the same capsule containing 250 mg of starch twice daily for one month. Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index was completed by the participants of both groups before and after the treatment and the data obtained were analyzed with Chi-square, paired and independent t-test in SPSS (version 20). Results: The mean score of sleep quality before and after the treatment was 12.69 ± 3.98 and 8.58 ± 1.97 in the treatment group, respectively. Also, the score of sleep quality in the placebo group was 13.48 ± 2.60 and 11.21 ± 2.74 at the beginning and end of the research, respectively. The symptoms of sleep disorder in the intervention group significantly improved after the treatment (P < 0.001), while this was not the case with the placebo group (P = 0.155). Besides, there was a significant difference between the two groups in the mean score of sleep quality after the treatment (P = 0.012). Conclusion: Dracocephalum extracts are effective in reducing symptoms of sleep disorders in post-menopausal women.

Objective Stroke among young adults is the leading cause of disability worldwide. Efforts are being taken to control stroke in the general population, but in parallel, there is an increasing trend of stroke among the young population. These patients are often affected by physical disability, cognitive impairment, and loss of productivity, all of which have personal, social, and economic implications. The main aim of this study was to determine the risk factors associated with stroke among young patients admitted to a tertiary care rehabilitation center and determine the effect of rehabilitation on the outcome of their daily life activities. Materials and Methods A retrospective hospital-based cohort study was conducted between January 2015 to December 2019. Prevalence of stroke-related risk factors like hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, and cardiac disease was assessed. Results Out of 710 young stroke adults, 71.97% were described as ischemic, and 28.03% reported as non-ischemic. Mean age (SD) was found to be 44.54 ± 9.3. Univariate analysis demonstrated that hyperlipidemia, cardiac disease, and diabetes indicated a significantly higher risk for ischemic stroke with an OR (95% CI) at 2.5 (1.7-3.7), 2.11 (1.2-3.6), and 1.66 (1.2-2.3) respectively. A significant improvement was observed in their Functional Independence Measure (FIM0 score after their rehabilitation irrespective of age and gender. Conclusion Association of risk factors associated with stroke should be subjected to close follow-up and management, thus reducing the risk of developing long-lasting disabilities at a young age. The identification of risk factors for young stroke incidence is a step towards improving health in the young adult population.

We report a significant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA) at interfaces comprising hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and Co. By comparing the behavior of these phenomena at graphene/Co and h-BN/Co interfaces, it is found that the DMI in the latter increases as a function of Co thickness and beyond three monolayers stabilizes with 1 order of magnitude larger values compared to those at graphene/Co, where the DMI shows opposite decreasing behavior. Meanwhile, the PMA for both systems shows similar trends with larger values for graphene/Co and no significant variations for all thickness ranges of Co. Furthermore, using micromagnetic simulations we demonstrate that such significant DMI and PMA values remaining stable over a large range of Co thickness give rise to the formation of skyrmions with small applied external fields. These findings open up further possibilities toward integrating two-dimensional (2D) materials in spin-orbitronics devices.

Magneto-ionics allows for tunable control of magnetism by voltage-driven transport of ions, traditionally oxygen or lithium and, more recently, hydrogen, fluorine, or nitrogen. Here, magneto-ionic effects in single-layer iron nitride films are demonstrated, and their performance is evaluated at room temperature and compared with previously studied cobalt nitrides. Iron nitrides require increased activation energy and, under high bias, exhibit more modest rates of magneto-ionic motion than cobalt nitrides. Ab initio calculations reveal that, based on the atomic bonding strength, the critical field required to induce nitrogen-ion motion is higher in iron nitrides (≈6.6 V nm-1) than in cobalt nitrides (≈5.3 V nm-1). Nonetheless, under large bias (i.e., well above the magneto-ionic onset and, thus, when magneto-ionics is fully activated), iron nitride films exhibit enhanced coercivity and larger generated saturation magnetization, surpassing many of the features of cobalt nitrides. The microstructural effects responsible for these enhanced magneto-ionic effects are discussed. These results open up the potential integration of magneto-ionics in existing nitride semiconductor materials in view of advanced memory system architectures.

Homozygous variants of the thrombospondin type-1 domain-containing 1 (THSD1) gene have recently been associated with nonimmune hydrops fetalis (NIHF; OMIM 236750) in infants, as well as with congenital heart disease, hemangiomas, prematurity, and embryonic lethality. Here, we report the first case of a biallelic variant of THSD1 in an extremely premature infant (25 weeks) who suffered from NIHF (eventually resolved) and other manifestations of the THSD1 variant, such as congenital heart disease and hemangiomas. Her prematurity was complicated by pulmonary hypertension and chronic lung disease. This case indicates that biallelic homozygous variants of THSD1 are among the likely causes of NIHF. Information from this case report will aid in determining the prognosis of NIHF caused by such variants in premature infants.

BACKGROUND: Infertility is a worldwide public health problem and affects psychological aspects of males' and females' life. However, the problem has not been well investigated in Palestine. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine prevalence and predictors of depression among infertile men in the Gaza strip. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out among three hundred eighty five infertile males from January to December 2019. Participants were selected from three main in-vitro fertilization (IVF) centers following simple random sampling. The Arabic version of Beck Depression Inventory was used. Descriptive and inferential analyses were performed using the SPSS V22. Binary analysis was done to determine independent variables and t-test and one-way ANOVA were conducted afterwards. Logistic regression was performed to determine independent factors associated with depression symptoms. The p-value of 0.05 or less was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: Findings showed that 42.6% (164/385) of infertile men had at least one type of depression. Severe depression was presented in 16.6% (64/164) of participants, while 13.2% (51/164) and 12.7% (49/164) showed moderate and mild depression, respectively. Predictors for depression were duration of marriage (>8 years) (CI 95%: 1.099-2.615) and at least one IVF attempt (CI 95%: 0.373-0.873). CONCLUSION: It has been revealed that depression is prevalent among infertile men. Marriage of long duration and several failures in IVF attempts are predictors for depressions. Psychological counseling besides medical interventions seems to be an optimal strategy to alleviate psychological distress associated with infertility.

Magneto-ionics, understood as voltage-driven ion transport in magnetic materials, has largely relied on controlled migration of oxygen ions. Here, we demonstrate room-temperature voltage-driven nitrogen transport (i.e., nitrogen magneto-ionics) by electrolyte-gating of a CoN film. Nitrogen magneto-ionics in CoN is compared to oxygen magneto-ionics in Co3O4. Both materials are nanocrystalline (face-centered cubic structure) and show reversible voltage-driven ON-OFF ferromagnetism. In contrast to oxygen, nitrogen transport occurs uniformly creating a plane-wave-like migration front, without assistance of diffusion channels. Remarkably, nitrogen magneto-ionics requires lower threshold voltages and exhibits enhanced rates and cyclability. This is due to the lower activation energy for ion diffusion and the lower electronegativity of nitrogen compared to oxygen. These results may open new avenues in applications such as brain-inspired computing or iontronics in general.
