RESUMEN

The burnout syndrome may affect academic achievement, but research on burnout and academic success of medical students is sparse. This research aimed to estimate the prevalence of high risk of burnout in students of medicine and to investigate its association with academic performance. It included 760 full-time medical students who completed the survey (response rate = 90.9 %). A significant independent predictor for high burnout risk in students with lower grade point average (GPA) was male gender (adjusted OR=2.44; 95 % CI=1.14-5.23; P=0.022). Among students with higher GPA, high burnout risk was associated with the use of sedatives (adjusted OR=6.44; 95 % CI=1.80-22.99; P=0.004).

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Some studies did find significant differences in the level of depression of women while undergoing diagnostic evaluation of an abnormal Papanicolaou screening smear, but findings were not consistent. This study aimed to assess prevalence and correlates of depression in women with abnormal cervical screening results before and after diagnostic procedures. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out during 2017 in a cohort of women with positive Papanicolaou screening test before and after diagnostic procedures (colposcopy/biopsy/endocervical curettage) at the university Clinical Centre Kragujevac, Serbia. Women completed a questionnaire about demographics, lifestyle, and other factors of interest. Also, questionnaire "Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale" (HADS) was used immediately before and 2-4 weeks after the diagnostic procedures: a score of ≥8 on HADS-D and HADS-A subscales indicated depression and anxiety, respectively. Multivariate logistic regression was applied in the data analysis. RESULTS: The study comprised 172 women, giving a response rate of 72.3%. The mean age of the participants was 47.8 ± 11.1 years (range 23-65). The frequency of depressive symptoms was significantly higher after diagnostic procedures (48.3%) than before diagnostic procedures (37.2%) (p = 0.038). Before diagnostic procedures, older age (OR = 1.60; 95% CI = 1.09-2.34; p = 0.017), and level of anxiety according to the HADS-A subscale (OR = 1.61; 95% CI = 1.38-1.88; p < 0.001) were significant independent predictors of depression. After diagnostic procedures, significant independent predictors of depression were urban place of residence (OR = 0.12; 95% CI = 0.03-0.47; p = 0.002) and level of anxiety according to the HADS-A subscale (OR = 1.85; 95% CI = 1.54-2.21; p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: Our study showed that older age, rural residence, and anxiety play a role in shaping the risk of depression among women undergoing additional diagnostic procedures after receiving an abnormal Papanicolaou screening result.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a serious health problem among medical students. We aimed to investigate the prevalence and associated factors for LBP among Serbian medical students. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was performed among medical students at one University in Serbia. Data was collected by a self-reported questionnaire. Logistic regression was used to determine the factors associated with LBP; results from the analyses were expressed as odds ratios (OR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: The study sample comprised 499 medical students, giving a response rate of 92.9%. The mean age of the participants was 22.0 ± 2.2 years (range 18-34). Overall, 20.8% (104/499) of medical students had LBP at the time of study. Cigarette smoking (OR = 2.5, 95% CI [1.5-4.2], p = 0.001), stress during classes (OR = 1.8, 95% CI [1.1-3.0], p = 0.039), incorrect sleeping position (OR = 1.9, 95% CI [1.2-3.1], p = 0.006) and family history of LBP (OR = 1.6, 95% CI [1.1-2.7], p = 0.047) were independently associated with high prevalence of LBP at the time of the study. CONCLUSIONS: LBP is a highly prevalent health problem in medical students in Serbia. The association between LBP and cigarette smoking, stress during classes, incorrect sleeping position and LBP in family history has been observed in medical students.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to investigate a potential association of certain risk factors in orthopedic patients with surgical site infection (SSI) occurrence. The study population consisted of all patients who underwent surgery at the Orthopedic and Traumatology Clinic of the University Hospital in Kragujevac (n = 801) over a 12- month period. Surgical site infections were found in 104 patients (13.0%). Results of multivariate regression analysis indicated that SSIs were significantly more frequent in patients who had a contaminated or dirty wound (RR = 27.68, 95% CI = 11.54 to 66.40; p = 0.0000), with drainage (RR = 4.62, 95% CI = 2.33 to 9.15; p = 0.0000), and who were at the Intensive Care Unit (RR = 3.25, 95% CI = 1.38 to 7.69; p = 0.0072).
