RESUMEN

The Japan Network for Research and Information on Medical Exposures (J-RIME) established the diagnostic reference level (DRL) and is advancing optimization of radiation protection. We believe that the difference in the imaging dose between facilities may be due to the fact that automatic exposure control (AEC) adjustment is not unified among manufacturers. The consistency of AEC is specified in JIS 4751-2-54, but it is not applicable to digital X-ray imaging systems because it is for optical density of analog X-ray imaging systems. This article evaluates the consistency of AEC in digital X-ray imaging systems. The AEC consistency was compared with the AEC-estimated dose from the air kerma (KAEC) using the phosphor-based imaging plate placed at the back of the AEC detector. We measured the AEC tube voltage and subject thickness characteristics (tracking) of four types of digital X-ray imaging systems at three facilities. In the test of tube voltage characteristics, the average KAEC values at all tube voltages were 2.37±0.04 µGy for A system, 7.30±1.44 µGy for B system, 3.53±0.13 µGy for C system, and 5.70±0.18 µGy for D system. The relative errors were +2.6 to -1.8% for A system, +25.3 to -22.6% for B system, +5.2 to -1.4% for C system, and +2.5 to -4.4% for D system. In the subject thickness characteristics test, the average KAEC values for all Al thicknesses were 2.34±0.02 µGy for A system, 5.95±0.23 µGy for B system, 4.25±1.12 µGy for C system, and 5.03±1.27 µGy for D system. The relative errors were +1.0 to -0.9% for A system, +4.1 to -5.0% for B system, +40.5 to -28.1% for C system, and +19.7 to -42.9% for D system.

RESUMEN

We have conducted a questionnaire survey every 5 years from 1974 to grasp the existing status of X-ray equipment. This time, we will report on the results of the fiscal 2015 diagnostic X-ray equipment questionnaire survey. Compared to the previous survey on X-ray equipment, there has been a progress in the introduction of inverter type X-ray generators and image receptor systems in digital systems. We think that this transition will be occurred when the X-ray equipment are updated. In addition, there has been an increase in digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) and the use of tungsten anodes in the X-ray tubes of mammography apparatuses. X-ray equipment management was performed in many facilities. It seems that the importance of quality control of X-ray equipment is being realized. Constancy tests corresponding to digital systems were conducted at each facility. Maintenance by manufacturers has also increased. This is considered to be because the equipment management of digital systems has become difficult. We believe that it is necessary to continue the survey on the status of diagnostic X-ray equipment.

The standard general purpose of anti-scatter girds: JIS Z 4910: 2015 (IEC 60627: 2013) has been revised, with the new addition of an image improvement factor (Q) to the physical characteristic. Using aluminum (Al) and fiber-interspaced anti-scatter grids; we studied the meaning of Q by calculating each of the physical characteristics and assessing the image. The experimental method was based on JIS Z 4910: 2015. The two anti-scatter grids had a grid ratio of 12: 1 and a strip frequency of 40 cm-1. Assessment items consisted of grid exposure factor (B), grid selectivity (Σ), contrast improvement ratio (K), and Q. In addition, the contrast to noise ratio (CNR) and contrast-detail curve (CD-curve) were determined from the contrast-detail phantom image, and the inverse image quality figure (IQF) was then calculated from the CD-curve. Compared to the Al-interspaced anti-scatter grid, the fiber-interspaced anti-scatter grid had B at 0.87, Σ at 0.95, K at 0.99, and Q at 1.14. In the assessment of the contrast-detail phantom image, the fiber-interspaced anti-scatter grid had an IQF of 1.02 times and a CNR of approximately 1.24 times when compared to the Al interspaced anti-scatter grid. The fiber-interspaced anti-scatter grid was superior with respect to the B and Q of the physical characteristics and to the CNR of image quality assessment.

The current data article provides behavioral and neuroimaging data for the research article "Relatedness-dependent rapid development of brain activity in anterior temporal cortex during pair-association retrieval" (Jimura et al., 2016) [1]. Behavioral performance is provided in a table. Fig. 2 of the article is based on this table. Brain regions showing time effect are provided in a table. A statistical activation map for the time effect is shown in Fig. 3C of the article.

The orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) is involved in cognitive functions, and is also closely related to autonomic functions. The OFC is densely connected with the hypothalamus, a heterogeneous structure controlling autonomic functions that can be divided into two major parts: the lateral and the medial. Resting-state functional connectivity has allowed us to parcellate the cerebral cortex into putative functional areas based on the changes in the spatial pattern of connectivity in the cerebral cortex when a seed point is moved from one voxel to another. In the present high spatial-resolution fMRI study, we investigate the connectivity-based organization of the OFC with reference to the hypothalamus. The OFC was parcellated using resting-state functional connectivity in an individual subject approach, and then the functional connectivity was examined between the parcellated areas in the OFC and the lateral/medial hypothalamus. We found a functional double dissociation in the OFC: the lateral OFC (the lateral orbital gyrus) was more likely connected with the lateral hypothalamus, whereas the medial OFC (the medial orbital and rectal gyri) was more likely connected with the medial hypothalamus. These results demonstrate the fundamental heterogeneity of the OFC, and suggest a potential neural basis of the OFC-hypothalamic functional interaction.

Functional MRI studies have revealed that the brain activity in the anterior temporal cortex during memory retrieval increases over months after memory encoding. Behavioral evidence has demonstrated that long-term memory can sometimes be consolidated more rapidly in one or two days. In the present functional MRI study, we manipulated the relatedness between paired faces to be retrieved in a pair-association task. The brain activity in the anterior temporal cortex during retrieval of paired associates increased rapidly in one day, as shown in previous studies. We found that the speed of the brain activity development was dependent on the level of semantic relatedness of paired faces. The results suggest that the semantic relatedness enhances the speed of formation of memory representation in the anterior temporal cortex.

During rest, the human brain performs essential functions such as memory maintenance, which are associated with resting-state brain networks (RSNs) including the default-mode network (DMN) and frontoparietal network (FPN). Previous studies based on spiking-neuron network models and their reduced models, as well as those based on imaging data, suggest that resting-state network activity can be captured as attractor dynamics, i.e., dynamics of the brain state toward an attractive state and transitions between different attractors. Here, we analyze the energy landscapes of the RSNs by applying the maximum entropy model, or equivalently the Ising spin model, to human RSN data. We use the previously estimated parameter values to define the energy landscape, and the disconnectivity graph method to estimate the number of local energy minima (equivalent to attractors in attractor dynamics), the basin size, and hierarchical relationships among the different local minima. In both of the DMN and FPN, low-energy local minima tended to have large basins. A majority of the network states belonged to a basin of one of a few local minima. Therefore, a small number of local minima constituted the backbone of each RSN. In the DMN, the energy landscape consisted of two groups of low-energy local minima that are separated by a relatively high energy barrier. Within each group, the activity patterns of the local minima were similar, and different minima were connected by relatively low energy barriers. In the FPN, all dominant local minima were separated by relatively low energy barriers such that they formed a single coarse-grained global minimum. Our results indicate that multistable attractor dynamics may underlie the DMN, but not the FPN, and assist memory maintenance with different memory states.

On X-ray diagnostic technology, it is important to grasp a change of the X-ray high-voltage equipment and radiographic technique factors. The 1st questionnaire was performed in 1974, and it carried out after that every five years, and conducted 8th investigation. As a result, we requested 656 institutions and got a reply from 103 institutions. The response rate was 15.7%. For X-ray high-voltage equipment, the inverter-type device shifts to 83.6% from 73.4% of last time. X-ray high-voltage equipment will be shifted to inverter-type device the near future. For X-ray tube device, the target angle becomes more smaller than usual, and maximum anode heat content is increasing tendency. The spread of digital devices is being advanced, and especially the flat panel detector (FPD) increases in the devices. The spread of soft copy diagnoses is 73.8% for chest image diagnoses, and 49.5% for breast image diagnosis. For the device management, the ratio of institutions measured at purchase time was 91.2%. But, the ratio of institutions performed an invariability examination was 58.4%. It is required to grasp the performance of an X-ray equipment and peripheral equipment, and to perform accuracy control in order to obtain proper radiographic technique factors and imaging. In order to use it for the improvement in photography technology, we would like to continue to conduct this investigation periodically.

The resting-state human brain networks underlie fundamental cognitive functions and consist of complex interactions among brain regions. However, the level of complexity of the resting-state networks has not been quantified, which has prevented comprehensive descriptions of the brain activity as an integrative system. Here, we address this issue by demonstrating that a pairwise maximum entropy model, which takes into account region-specific activity rates and pairwise interactions, can be robustly and accurately fitted to resting-state human brain activities obtained by functional magnetic resonance imaging. Furthermore, to validate the approximation of the resting-state networks by the pairwise maximum entropy model, we show that the functional interactions estimated by the pairwise maximum entropy model reflect anatomical connexions more accurately than the conventional functional connectivity method. These findings indicate that a relatively simple statistical model not only captures the structure of the resting-state networks but also provides a possible method to derive physiological information about various large-scale brain networks.

Recent advancement of resting-state functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has provided a method for drawing boundaries of brain areas. However, it remains to be elucidated how the parcellated areas in the association cortex relate to the spatial extent of the brain activation which ought to reflect a functional unit in the neural network supporting that particular function. To address this issue, in the present study, we first mapped boundaries and 2 adjacent activations in the human inferior frontal cortex, and then examined the spatial relationship between the boundaries and the 2 activations. The boundaries mapped with high-resolution functional magnetic resonance imaging revealed a collection of micromodules, the size of which was approximately only 12 mm on average, much smaller than the Brodmann areas. Each of the 2 activations associated with 2 functions, response inhibition and feedback processing, was smaller in size than the micromodules. By comparing the spatial patterns between the boundaries and the 2 activations, it was revealed that the brain activations were less likely to be located on the boundaries. These results suggest the functional relevance of the areas in the association cortex delineated by the boundary mapping method based on resting-state functional connectivity MRI.

Retrieval of remote memory is considered to differentially involve the anterior and posterior temporal neocortices. Previous neuropsychological studies suggest that the different posterior temporal cortical regions are involved in the retrieval of remote memory of different categories of stimuli, whereas the anterior region is involved more generally in remote memory retrieval. In the present study, using functional magnetic resonance imaging of human brains, we tested this dissociation by examining the more precise characteristics of the anterior and posterior temporal cortical regions. Two categories of stimuli, faces and scenes, were used for paired stimuli to be retrieved, and the brain activity during retrieval of paired stimuli that were learned immediately before the scanning was compared with that during retrieval of paired stimuli that were learned ∼8 weeks earlier. We found that the different posterior temporal cortical regions were activated during retrieval of different categories of remote memory in a category-specific manner, whereas the anterior temporal cortical region was activated during retrieval of remote memory in a category-general manner. Furthermore, by applying a multivariate pattern analysis to psychophysiological interactions during retrieval of remote memory relative to recent memory, we revealed the significant interaction from the category-specific posterior temporal cortical regions to the category-general anterior temporal region. These results suggest that the posterior temporal cortical regions are involved in representation and retrieval of category-specific remote memory, whereas the anterior cortical temporal region is involved in category-general retrieval process of remote memory.

Application of multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA) to functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data enables reconstruction and classification of cognitive status from brain activity. However, previous studies using MVPA have extracted information about cognitive status that is experienced simultaneously with fMRI scanning, but not one that will be observed after the scanning. In this study, by focusing on activity in the medial temporal lobe (MTL), we demonstrate that MVPA on fMRI data is capable of predicting subsequent recognition performance. In this experiment, six runs of fMRI signals were acquired during encoding of phonogram stimuli. In the analysis, using data acquired in runs 1-3, we first conducted MVPA-based voxel-wise search for the clusters in the MTL whose signals contained the most information about subsequent recognition performance. Next, using the fMRI signals acquired in runs 1-3 from the selected clusters, we trained a classifier function in MVPA. Finally, the trained classifier function was applied to fMRI signals acquired in runs 4-6. Consequently, we succeeded in predicting the subsequent recognition performance for stimuli studied in runs 4-6 with significant accuracy. This accurate prediction suggests that MVPA can extract information that is associated not only with concurrent cognitive status, but also with behavior in the near future.

RESUMEN

In this report, we summarize the survey of diagnostic X-ray equipment conducted in 2005, focusing on exposure conditions. What we would like to point out in this report is how prevalent digital image receptor systems have become, including flat panel detectors (FPD), which did not exist in our last survey five years ago. FPD have become popular very quickly among the digital receptor systems used in general radiography. Twenty-three percent of all chest standing-position X-ray equipment now have FPD. Since FPD has become prevalent, exposure conditions are becoming somewhat different from screen/film systems (s/f) and computed radiography (CR). While the image receptor system is expected to shift to FPD, we would like to continue our survey to determine what exposure conditions will be like in the near future.

In accordance with a questionnaire survey of diagnostic X-ray equipment enforced in 2005, this report was focused mainly on a photography device. The paper questionnaire was mailed to 667 institutions, and the collection rate was 20.4%. Introductions of digital photographic devices are progressing and flat panel detectors (FPD) are spreading in addition to computed radiography (CR). Examination revealed that the spread rate of FPD was 14.4%. The inverter-type device occupied 73.4% in group of high-voltage-generation devices. We reason that the spread rate indicates changeover to an inverter-type device. Changes in photography equipment and photography devices will bring change in photographic technology. Such investigation will be necessary in the future.

Eleven polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and 14 acetylenic PAHs and biphenyls were used to analyze interactions with cytochrome P450 (P450) 1B1 in inhibiting catalytic activity, using 7-ethoxyresorufin O-deethylation (EROD) as a model reaction. Most of the chemicals examined were direct inhibitors of P450 1B1 except for 4-(1-propynyl)biphenyl, a mechanism-based inhibitor. In the case of direct inhibition of EROD activity {15 of 24 chemicals, e.g., benzo[a]pyrene, 1-(1-propynyl)pyrene, and 3-(1-propynyl)phenanthrene}, restoration of the EROD activity occurred with increasing incubation time, and kinetic analysis showed that EROD K(m) values were higher with these inhibitors at initial stages of incubation but became lower with increasing incubation time. With the other nine chemicals, the K(m) values for P450 1B1-mediated EROD increased during the incubations. Acetylenic inhibitors, but not the 11 PAHs, induced reverse type I spectral changes with P450 1B1, and the low dissociation constants (K(s)) suggested a role for such interaction in the inhibition of catalytic activity. Studies of quenching of P450 1B1-derived fluorescence with inhibitors demonstrated that acetylenic inhibitors and PAHs interacted rapidly with P450 1B1, with K(d) values < 10 microM. However, studies of quenching of inhibitor-derived fluorescence with P450 1B1 showed these interactions to be different, that is, B[a]P interacted with P450 1B1 more slowly. Molecular docking of P450 1B1, based on P450 1A2 crystal structure, suggested that there are clear differences in the interaction of PAH inhibitors with P450 1B1 and 1A2 and that these differences may explain why PAH inhibitors inhibit P450 1 enzymes by different mechanisms. The results suggest that P450 1B1 interacts with synthetic polycyclic aromatic acetylenes and PAHs in different ways, depending on the chemicals, and that these differences in interactions may explain how these chemicals inhibit P450 activities by different mechanisms.

The objectives of this study were to determine the optimum thickness of a CaTiO(3) film for biomaterial applications and to investigate the biocompatibility and bone formation of titanium with a CaTiO(3) film. First, CaTiO(3) films of 10, 20, 30, and 50 nm in thickness were deposited on titanium substrates using radiofrequency magnetron sputtering followed by annealing at 873 K in air for 7.2 ks. The optimum thickness of the CaTiO(3) film for bone formation was determined by comparison with its performance regarding calcium phosphate formation in Hanks' balanced saline solution (HBSS). Regarding calcium phosphate formation, the performance of the specimen with a 50-nm-thick CaTiO(3) film was superior to those of specimens with other thicknesses. A titanium prism with a CaTiO(3) film of 50-nm in thickness was surgically inserted in both soft and hard rat tissues. The biocompatibility of CaTiO(3)-deposited titanium and bone formation on it was investigated by histological observations. A slight inflammatory reaction was observed around the titanium with the 50-nm-thick CaTiO(3) film, while no severe response, such as degeneration and necrosis, was observed in either soft or hard rat tissue. New bone formation on the titanium plate with the CaTiO(3) film was more active than that without the film. The 50-nm-thick CaTiO(3) film has biocompatibility and can facilitate new bone formation in vivo, and, consequently, it is an excellent surface modification method for biomaterial applications.

Prostacyclin synthase (PGIS), which catalyzes the conversion of prostaglandin (PG) H(2) to prostacyclin (PGI(2)), is a member of the cytochrome P-450 (P450) superfamily, CYP8A1. To study the enzymatic and protein characteristics of human PGIS, the enzyme was overexpressed in Spodoptera frugiperda 21 (Sf21) cells using the baculovirus expression system. PGIS was expressed in the microsomes of the infected Sf21 cells after culture in 5 microg/ml hematin-supplemented medium for 72 h. The holoenzyme was isolated from the solubilized microsomal fraction by calcium phosphate gel absorption and purified to homogeneity by DEAE-Sepharose and hydroxyapatite column chromatography. The K(m) and V(max) values of the purified human PGIS for PGH(2) were 30 microM and 15 micromol/min/mg of protein at 24 degrees C, respectively. The optical absorption and EPR spectra of the enzyme revealed the characteristics of a low-spin form of P450 in the oxidized state. The carbon monoxide-reduced difference spectrum, however, exhibited a peak at 418 nm rather than 450 nm. The addition of a PGH(2) analogue, U46619, to the enzyme produced an oxygen-ligand type of the difference spectrum with maximum absorption at 407 nm and minimum absorption at 430 nm. Treatment with another PGH(2) analogue, U44069, produced a peak at 387 nm and a trough at 432 nm in the spectrum (Type I), while treatment with tranylcypromine, a PGIS inhibitor, produced a peak at 434 nm and a trough at 412 nm (Type II). A Cys441His mutant of the enzyme possessed no heme-binding ability or enzyme activity. Thus, we succeeded in obtaining a sufficient amount of the purified recombinant human PGIS from infected insect cells for spectral analyses that has high specific activity and the characteristics of a P450, indicating substrate specificity.

Our X-ray systems study group measured and examined the characteristics of four transportable inverter-type X-ray equipments. X-ray tube voltage and X-ray tube current were measured with the X-ray tube voltage and the X-ray tube current measurement terminals provided with the equipment. X-ray tube voltage, irradiation time, and dose were measured with a non-invasive X-ray tube voltage-measuring device, and X-ray output was measured by fluorescence meter. The items investigated were the reproducibility and linearity of X-ray output, error of pre-set X-ray tube voltage and X-ray tube current, and X-ray tube voltage ripple percentage. The waveforms of X-ray tube voltage, the X-ray tube current, and fluorescence intensity draw were analyzed using the oscilloscope gram and a personal computer. All of the equipment had a preset error of X-ray tube voltage and X-ray tube current that met JIS standards. The X-ray tube voltage ripple percentage of each equipment conformed to the tendency to decrease when X-ray tube voltage increased. Although the X-ray output reproducibility of system A exceeded the JIS standard, the other systems were within the JIS standard. Equipment A required 40 ms for X-ray tube current to reach the target value, and there was some X-ray output loss because of a trough in X-ray tube current. Owing to the influence of the ripple in X-ray tube current, the strength of the fluorescence waveform rippled in equipments B and C. Waveform analysis could not be done by aliasing of the recording device in equipment D. The maximum X-ray tube current of transportable inverter-type X-ray equipment is as low as 10-20 mA, and the irradiation time of chest X-ray photography exceeds 0.1 sec. However, improvement of the radiophotographic technique is required for patients who cannot move their bodies or halt respiration. It is necessary to make the irradiation time of the equipments shorter for remote medical treatment.

The X-ray systems study group used the Victoreen NERO mAx model 8000, a new non-invasive X-ray output analyzer, to measure the tube voltage, tube voltage waveform, tube current, and irradiation time for conditions corresponding to general radiography and mammography. The measurement results were then compared with those obtained using a conventional invasive measuring instrument. The peak values of the tube voltage measured by the NERO mAx and the invasive measuring instrument were compared. The NERO mAx had a good measurement error range of -1.2 to +0.9 kV. For tube current measurement by the NERO mAx, the maximum error for general radiography conditions was +11 mA and that for mammography conditions was +6 mA. For irradiation time measurement, the value for general radiography conditions was slightly greater and the value for mammography conditions was slightly less than the corresponding values obtained by the invasive measuring instrument. If radiation quality is changed during measurement of the characteristics, measurement values change. Since the NERO mAx incorporates two types of X-ray detectors, it shows good measurement reproducibility. The NERO mAx has been shown to have suitable characteristics for use as a measuring instrument for constancy tests. In the future, constancy tests should be used to quantitatively control the factors determining clinical image quality.
