RESUMEN

Small organic molecules with interesting optical and electrochemical properties find applications as organic luminescent materials. In this work, we report the synthesis of novel chalcones with D-A-D and D-A-D-A architecture, followed by their optical, electrochemical, and computational studies. The absorption band of these compounds occurs at 360-480 nm with emission maxima appearing around 513-552 nm. The large Stokes shifts (Δλ) for all compounds (90-132 nm) suggest intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) in the excited states. The molar absorptivity and fluorescence quantum yields were found to be in the range of 1.7-4.26 × 104 M-1 cm-1 and 0.29-0.39, respectively. The electrochemical parameters were determined by using cyclic voltammetry (CV). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations of all compounds were made by using B3LYP/G (d,p) functionals in chloroform and were found to have a good correlation with experimental results. Preliminary studies of absorption, photoluminescence, CV, and their theoretical correlation suggest that these compounds may be optimized for their applications in optoelectronics, sensing, and bioimaging.

RESUMEN

A novel series of 5-(aroylhydrazinocarbonyl)escitalopram (58-84) have been designed, synthesized and tested for their inhibitory potential against cholinesterases. 3-Chlorobenzoyl- (71) was found to be the most potent compound of this series having IC50 1.80 ± 0.11 µM for acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibition. For the butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) inhibition, 2-bromobenzoyl- (76) was the most active compound of the series with IC50 2.11 ± 0.31 µM. Structure-activity relationship illustrated that mild electron donating groups enhanced enzyme inhibition while electron withdrawing groups reduced the inhibition except o-NO2. However, size and position of the substituents affected enzyme inhibitions. . In docking study of AChE, the ligands 71, 72 and 76 showed the scores of 5874, 5756 and 5666 and ACE of -64.92,-203.25 and -140.29 kcal/mol, respectively. In case of BChE, ligands 71, 76 and 81 depicted high scores 6016, 6150 and 5994 with ACE values -170.91, -256.84 and -235.97 kcal/mol, respectively.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Pediatric obesity is a growing problem affecting the health of our youth. We sought to identify the barriers to pediatric bariatric referral at a tertiary referral center. METHODS: We performed a survey of pediatricians and family practitioners at a single institution to assess their perspectives on pediatric obesity. RESULTS: A total of 61 physicians completed the survey (response rate 46%). All believed pediatric obesity is a major problem, and 82.0% noted an increase in the incidence during a mean period of 15 years (range 3-25). Of the 61 physicians, 88.5% used nonoperative weight loss techniques, with only 1.8% reporting satisfactory results. However, 42.6% had referred a patient (adult or pediatric) for a bariatric procedure, of whom 84.6% were satisfied with the operative outcomes. Despite the high satisfaction with bariatric procedures, 88.5% would be unlikely or would never refer a child for a bariatric procedure, and 44.3% would be somewhat or very likely to refer an adolescent. CONCLUSION: Physicians caring for children recognize the growing problem of childhood and adolescent obesity. Despite the poor outcomes with nonoperative methods and the high satisfaction with the outcomes of bariatric procedures, physicians are still reluctant to refer children and adolescents for surgical weight loss procedures.

RESUMEN

Two series of homoleptic phenolate complexes with fluorinated aryloxide ligands A2[M(OAr)4] with M=Co2+ or Cu2+, OAr-=(OC6F5)- (OArF) or [3,5-OC6H3(CF3)2]- (OAr'), A+=K (18-crown-6)+, Tl+, Ph4P+, Et3HN+, or Me4N+ have been synthesized. Two related complexes with nonfluorinated phenoxide ligands have been synthesized and studied in comparison to the fluorinated aryloxides demonstrating the dramatic structural changes effected by modification of OPh to OAr(F). The compounds [K(18-crown-6)]2[Cu(OArF)4], 1a; [K(18-crown-6)]2[Cu(OAr')4], 1b; [Tl2Cu(OArF)4], 2a; [Tl2Cu(OAr')4], 2b; (Ph4P)2[Cu(OArF)4], 3; (nBu4N)2[Cu(OArF)4], 4; (HEt3N)2[Cu(OArF)4], 5; [K(18-crown-6)]2[Cu2(mu2-OC6H5)2(OC6H5)4], 6; [K(18-crown-6)]2[Co(OArF)4], 7a; [(18-crown-6)]2[Co(OAr')4], 7b; [Tl2Co(OArF)4], 8a; [Tl2Co(OAr')4], 8b; (Me4N)2[Co(OArF)4], 9; [Cp2Co]2[Co(OAr')4], 10; and [(18-crown-6)])[Co2(mu2-OC6H5)2(OC6H5)4], 11, have been characterized with UV-vis and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and solution magnetic moment studies. Cyclic voltammetry was used to study 1a, 1b, 7a, and 7b. X-ray crystallography was used to characterize 1b, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7a, 7b, 10, and 11. The related [MX4]2- compound (Ph4P)2[Co(OArF)2Cl2], 12, has also been synthesized and characterized spectroscopically, as well as with conductivity and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Use of fluorinated aryloxides permits synthesis and isolation of the mononuclear, homoleptic phenolate anions in good yield without oligomerized side products. The reaction conditions that result in homoleptic 1a and 7a with OArF upon changing the ligand to OPh result in mu2-OPh bridging phenoxides and the dimeric complexes 6 and 11. The [M(OArF)4]2- and [M(OAr')4]2- anions in 1a, 1b, 3, 4, 5, 7a, 7b, 9, and 10 demonstrate that stable, isolable homoleptic phenolate anions do not need to be coordinatively or sterically saturated and can be achieved by increasing the electronegativity of the ligand.
