RESUMEN

SUMMARY: Distal radius fractures are the most common fractures of the upper limb. The most commonly used method in the repair of these fractures is volar locking plates. Recently, the frequency of removal of volar locking plates after surgery has increased. There are many factors in its reduction. Anatomically, incompatibility of the distal end of the radius with volar locking plates is one of them. In previous studies, different volar cortical angle (VCA) values were found in other races. For this reason, this study aimed to determine the mean values by making VCA measurements of the Anatolian population. The study was designed retrospectively. In the study, measurements were made on computed tomography (CT) images of the distal end of the radius of 53 men and 28 women. Radial width, intermediate volar angle, and radial volar angle were measured in the images. On average, the radius width was 23.35±1.96 mm, and the intermediate volar angle was 26.02±.3.83°, radial volar angle was 24±3.07°. Radial width, intermediate volar angle, and radial volar angle differed significantly by gender (p<0.001). A significant correlation was found between radius width, intermediate volar angle, and radial volar angle values (p<0.001). It has been determined that the Anatolian population has a different VCA value than the European, Asian, and other populations. When using volar locking plates in distal radius fracture surgery, volar locking plates should be selected by considering the average values of the races.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the breast densities and Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System scores of patients with polycystic ovary syndrome and normoovulatory women and to determine whether these patients constitute a high-risk population for breast cancer. METHODS: This retrospective case-control study was conducted at our institution between January 2022 and December 2022, involving patients diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome. Menstrual periods, hyperandrogenemic findings, and ultrasound reports of the patients were retrieved from our hospital's database. Patients who met at least two of the Rotterdam criteria were included in the polycystic ovary syndrome group. A total of 70 premenopausal patients over the age of 40 years, diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome, and 70 normoovulatory women, matched for age and body mass index, were included in the study. The two groups were compared regarding age at menarche, menstrual pattern, gravida, parity, levels of follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, and estradiol, endometrial thickness, breast density category, and Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System classifications. RESULTS: Patients in the polycystic ovary syndrome group had a higher age at menarche (12.7 vs. 12.3, p=0.006). There was no difference between the gonadotropin levels in both groups. However, the estradiol level was higher in the polycystic ovary syndrome group (p<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference between the two groups in terms of breast density and Breast Imaging-Reporting and Data System scores (p=0.319 and p=0.650, respectively). CONCLUSION: Although we can conclude that the risk of breast malignancy is not increased in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, the impact of the complex hormonal status of polycystic ovary syndrome on breast cancer remains unclear in the literature.

RESUMEN

SUMMARY: Distal radius fractures are one of the most common orthopedic injuries encountered by orthopedic surgeons. Correction of dorsal tilt and radial height is essential to restore normal biomechanics of the wrist joint. Comprehensive knowledge of the morphometry of the distal radius of the local population becomes critical for the treating surgeon. This study aims to report the morphometry of the distal radius in the Anatolian population and compare it with similar studies in other races and humans. Radiographs of one hundred and twenty-four people were included in the study. Four radiological parameters were examined on all radiographs: radial height, radial tilt, ulnar variance, and palmar tilt. Radial tilt was 23.35°±1.96; palmar tilt was 15.7°±2,87 radial height (mm) was 10.55±4.34, ulnar variance (mm) was 0.32±1.79. The highest rate of negative ulnar variance was found. According to the study's results, reference data varying by race for anatomical fit should be considered in treating DER injuries.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study is to examine the effects of delivery type and birth weight on pelvic floor structure using muscle defects, uterus-vagina angles and landmarks in pelvic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a retrospective study. Pelvic MR images of 38 vaginal deliveries and 62 cesarean section patients who met the study criteria were analyzed. Pubococcygeal line, H line, M line were marked on MR images, uterus cervix, cervix upper vagina, upper and middle vagina, middle and lower vagina angles, urogenital hiatus width, levator hiatus width, obturator internus muscle area, levator ani defect was measured. The urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse examination findings were recorded. The patients' age, body mass index (BMI), parity, delivery type, maximum birth weight questions were asked. The data of both groups were compared. RESULTS: Uterocervical angle and levator ani muscle defect was significantly higher in the vaginal delivery group (p < 0.001). In the vaginal delivery group, a significant positive correlation was found between the parity and the levator ani muscle defect (r = 0.552), (p = 0.000). A significant negative correlation was found between the parity and the uterocervical angle (r = -0.337), (p = 0.039). A significant negative correlation was found between maximum birth weight and cervix upper vagina angle (r = -0.365) (p = 0.024). In the vaginal delivery group, a negative significant correlation was found between birth weight and obturator internus muscle area (r = -0.378), (p = 0.019). CONCLUSIONS: These results show that cesarean section exposes the pelvic floor to less trauma and suggest that cesarean section may protect the pelvic floor.

RESUMEN

ABSTRACT Introduction: The aim of this study was to investigate the success of a deep learning model in detecting kidney stones in different planes according to stone size on unenhanced computed tomography (CT) images. Materials and Methods: This retrospective study included 455 patients who underwent CT scanning for kidney stones between January 2016 and January 2020; of them, 405 were diagnosed with kidney stones and 50 were not. Patients with renal stones of 0-1 cm, 1-2 cm, and >2 cm in size were classified into groups 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Two radiologists reviewed 2,959 CT images of 455 patients in three planes. Subsequently, these CT images were evaluated using a deep learning model. The accuracy rate, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive values of the deep learning model were determined. Results: The training group accuracy rates of the deep learning model were 98.2%, 99.1%, and 97.3% in the axial plane; 99.1%, 98.2%, and 97.3% in the coronal plane; and 98.2%, 98.2%, and 98.2% in the sagittal plane, respectively. The testing group accuracy rates of the deep learning model were 78%, 68% and 70% in the axial plane; 63%, 72%, and 64% in the coronal plane; and 85%, 89%, and 93% in the sagittal plane, respectively. Conclusions: The use of deep learning algorithms for the detection of kidney stones is reliable and effective. Additionally, these algorithms can reduce the reporting time and cost of CT-dependent urolithiasis detection, leading to early diagnosis and management.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to analyze the depressive and anxiety states of adolescent girls with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). This was a cross-sectional, multicenter, case-control study. A total of 100 participants (PCOS group, 51; control group, 49) aged 13-18 yr were included in the study. Body mass index was higher in patients with PCOS (P = 0.002). In the PCOS group, 28.5% of the patients had moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms, whereas the incidence was lower in controls (8.3%, P = 0.021). The State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI)-State, STAI-Trait, and physical, psychosocial, and total Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory PedsQL scores were higher in the PCOS group, suggesting that anxiety was more common and the quality of life was worse in patients with PCOS than in healthy participants (P = 0.01, P = 0.03, P = 0.02, P = 0.046, and P = 0.047, respectively). The serum free testosterone (fT) levels were positively correlated with the depression and anxiety scores and negatively correlated with the psychosocial PedsQL scores. In conclusion, adolescent girls diagnosed with PCOS demonstrated higher depressive and anxiety symptoms and lower psychosocial quality of life scores than their healthy counterparts. A relationship was found between the fT level and all psychological measures.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: The aim of the study was to investigate the thickness of subcutaneous (SC) tissue in the dorsogluteal and thigh sites in obese adults and its suitability for intramuscular injection using a standard-length needle. METHODS: The sample for this prospective study consisted of 54 obese adults who presented to the ultrasound unit of the radiology clinic of a university hospital in the province of Izmir, Turkey, between June 2012 and August 2013. The study received Institutional Review Board approval, and informed written consent was obtained from all participants. The thickness of the SC tissue in the dorsogluteal and thigh sites was measured by sonography. The sonographic measurements were performed by a radiology specialist. RESULTS: The mean thicknesses of the SC tissue were 61.70 ± 15.73 mm in the dorsogluteal site, 27.05 ± 8.52 mm in the rectus femoris site, and 23.23 ± 8.44 mm in vastus lateralis site. The SC tissue was thicker in the dorsogluteal than the thigh site (P < .001). CONCLUSIONS: A standard needle used in intramuscular injections to the thigh site would be effective in reaching the muscle in the rectus femoris and vastus lateralis sites in all men and in 77.8% of women, although it is not usually adequate for gluteal injection.
