RESUMEN

Development of subclassification of intermediate-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) by treatment suitability is in demand. We aimed to identify predictors that define treatment refractoriness against locoregional(transarterial chemoembolization(TACE) or thermal ablation) and surgical therapy. This multicenter retrospective study enrolled 1167 HCC patients between 2015 and 2021. Of those, 209 patients were initially diagnosed with intermediate-stage HCC. Treatment refractoriness was defined as clinical settings that meets the following untreatable progressive conditions by TACE (1) 25% increase of intrahepatic tumor, (2) transient deterioration to Child-Pugh class C, (3) macrovascular invasion or extrahepatic spread, within one year. We then analyzed factors contributing to treatment refractoriness. The Child-Pugh score/class, number of tumors, infiltrative radiological type, and recurrence were significant factors. Focusing on recurrence as a predictor, median time to untreatable progression (TTUP) was 17.2 months in the recurrence subgroup whereas 35.5 months in the initial occurrence subgroup (HR, 2.06; 95% CI, 1.44-2.96; P = 0.001). Median TTUP decreased in cases with more later times of recurrence (3-5 recurrences, 17.3 months; ≥ 6 recurrences, 7.7 months). Recurrence, even more at later times, leads to increased treatment refractoriness. Early introduction of multidisciplinary treatment should be considered against HCC patients after multiple recurrent episodes.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming more useful as a decision-making and outcomes predictor tool. We have developed AI models to predict surgical complexity and the postoperative course in laparoscopic liver surgery for segments 7 and 8. METHODS: We included patients with lesions located in segments 7 and 8 operated by minimally invasive liver surgery from an international multi-institutional database. We have employed AI models to predict surgical complexity and postoperative outcomes. Furthermore, we have applied SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) to make the AI models interpretable. Finally, we analyzed the surgeries not converted to open versus those converted to open. RESULTS: Overall, 585 patients and 22 variables were included. Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) showed the highest performance for predicting surgery complexity and Random Forest (RF) for predicting postoperative outcomes. SHAP detected that MLP and RF gave the highest relevance to the variables "resection type" and "largest tumor size" for predicting surgery complexity and postoperative outcomes. In addition, we explored between surgeries converted to open and non-converted, finding statistically significant differences in the variables "tumor location," "blood loss," "complications," and "operation time." CONCLUSION: We have observed how the application of SHAP allows us to understand the predictions of AI models in surgical complexity and the postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic liver surgery in segments 7 and 8.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of antimicrobial prophylaxis with ampicillin-sulbactam (ABPC/SBT) compared with cefazolin (CEZ) on the short-term outcomes after esophagectomy. BACKGROUND: CEZ is widely used for antimicrobial prophylaxis in esophagectomy without procedure-specific evidence, whereas ABPC/SBT is preferred in some hospitals to target both aerobic and anaerobic oral bacteria. METHODS: Data of patients who underwent esophagectomy for cancer between July 2010 and March 2019 were extracted from a nationwide Japanese inpatient database. Overlap propensity score weighting was conducted to compare the short-term outcomes [including surgical site infection (SSI), anastomotic leakage, and respiratory failure] between antimicrobial prophylaxis with CEZ and ABPC/SBT after adjusting for potential confounders. Sensitivity analyses were also performed using propensity score matching and instrumental variable analyses. RESULTS: Among 17,772 eligible patients, 16,077 (90.5%) and 1695 (9.5%) patients were administered CEZ and ABPC/SBT, respectively. SSI, anastomotic leakage, and respiratory failure occurred in 2971 (16.7%), 2604 (14.7%), and 2754 patients (15.5%), respectively. After overlap weighting, ABPC/SBT was significantly associated with a reduction in SSI [odds ratio 0.51 (95% CI: 0.43-0.60)], anastomotic leakage [0.51 (0.43-0.61)], and respiratory failure [0.66 (0.57-0.77)]. ABPC/SBT was also associated with reduced respiratory complications, postoperative length of stay, and total hospitalization costs. The proportion of Clostridioides difficile colitis and noninfectious complications did not differ between the groups. Propensity score matching and instrumental variable analyses demonstrated equivalent results. CONCLUSIONS: The administration of ABPC/SBT as antimicrobial prophylaxis for esophagectomy was associated with better short-term postoperative outcomes compared with CEZ.

Aim: Neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy may improve survival in patients with advanced cholangiocarcinoma. This Phase I study aimed to determine the recommended dose of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy and decide whether to move to a Phase II study. Methods: Patients diagnosed with resectable stage II-IVa cholangiocarcinoma were administered cisplatin (40 [level 0], 50 [level 1 as starting dose], or 60 [level 2] mg/m2), 80 mg/m2 of S-1, and 50.4 Gy of external beam radiation. The recommended dose was defined as a dose one-step lower than the maximum-tolerated dose, which was defined when dose-limiting toxicity was observed in three or more of the six patients. Results: Twelve patients were eligible from November 2012 to May 2016. Ten patients had perihilar cholangiocarcinoma and two patients had distal cholangiocarcinoma. Dose-limiting toxicity was observed in one of the first six patients at level 1 and two of the next six patients at level 2; thus, the maximum-tolerated dose was not determined even at level 2 and the recommended dose was determined as level 2. Four patients had partial response, four patients had stable disease, and two patients had progression of disease because of liver metastases. Finally, nine patients underwent radical surgery and seven cases achieved R0 resection. However, five cases suffered biliary leakage and one suffered intrahospital death due to rupture of the hepatic artery. Conclusion: We determined the recommended dose of neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy for resectable cholangiocarcinoma. However, we terminated the trial due to a high incidence of morbidity and unexpected mortality.

INTRODUCTION: Ileorectal fistulas following sigmoid colon vaginoplasty are rare. Reports on the management of the surgical complications of sex reassignment operations among transgender patients are few. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 40-year-old patient with a male-to-female sex identity disorder underwent sigmoid vaginoplasty for sex reassignment 4 months prior to presentation. The patient was referred for persistent diarrhea and postoperative lower abdominal pain. Proctoscopy, gastrografin enema, and small bowel enterography revealed rectal anastomotic stenosis and an ileorectal fistula. The prior anastomotic site and ileal rectal fistula were resected, and ileal interposition reconstruction was performed to avoid damaging the blood supply to the artificial vagina. Routine follow-up after the closure of the diverting ileostomy showed no new pathologies. DISCUSSION: This case highlighted the management of surgical complications after sex reassignment surgery. CONCLUSION: Ileal interposition was a useful reconstruction method after resecting the colonic anastomotic site to preserve the artificial vagina.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Colorectal cancer (CRC) with reduced expression of the homeobox transcription factor CDX2, a master gene essential for the development and maintenance of the intestinal tract, is known as a poor prognosis subtype of CRC. The recurrence rate is high in patients with CDX2low CRC. However, the prognostic significance of CDX2 in advanced CRC is unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the prognostic significance of CDX2 in unresectable metastatic CRC (mCRC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-nine patients with unresectable mCRC who underwent primary site resection at the Kobe University Hospital during a 6-year period from January 2008 to January 2015 were included. The tissues from those patients were immunohistochemically stained with anti-CDX2 antibody (clone: CDX2-88). The patients were divided into CDX2high CRC group and CDX2low CRC group and their prognoses were analyzed. RESULTS: There were no clear differences in background between the two groups. A low CDX2 expression was associated with reduced overall survival (37.67 months vs. 25.32 months, p=0.03) and tended to associate with reduced progression-free survival (17.4 months vs. 12.9 months, p=0.37). Two patients received chemotherapy after resection of the primary lesion and obtained pathological complete response. CONCLUSION: CDX2 expression might be a possible prognostic biomarker for unresectable mCRC.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Laparoscopic resection of gallbladder carcinomas remains controversial. This study aimed to evaluate the surgical and oncological outcomes of laparoscopic procedures for suspected gallbladder carcinoma (GBC). METHODS: In this retrospective study, data regarding suspected GBC treated with laparoscopic radical cholecystectomy before 2020 in Japan, was included. Patient characteristics, surgical procedure details, surgical outcomes, and long-term outcomes were analyzed. RESULTS: Data of 129 patients with suspected GBC who underwent laparoscopic radical cholecystectomy were retrospectively collected from 11 institutions in Japan. Among them, 82 patients with pathological GBC were included in the study. Laparoscopic gallbladder bed resection was performed in 114 patients and laparoscopic resection of segments IVb and V was performed in 15 patients. The median operation time was 269 min (range: 83-725 min), and the median intraoperative blood loss was 30 mL (range: 0-950 mL). The conversion and postoperative complication rates were 8% and 2%, respectively. During the follow-up period, the 5-year overall survival rate was 79% and the 5-year disease-free survival rate was 87%. Recurrence was detected in the liver, lymph nodes, and other local tissues. CONCLUSION: Laparoscopic radical cholecystectomy is a treatment option with potential favorable outcomes in selected patients with suspected GBC.

BACKGROUND: The proportion of early extubation after esophagectomy varies among hospitals; however, the impact on clinical outcomes is unclear. The aim of this retrospective study was to evaluate associations between the proportion of early extubation in hospitals and short-term outcomes after esophagectomy. Because there is no consensus regarding the optimal timing for extubation, the authors considered that hospitals' early extubation proportion reflects the hospital-level extubation strategy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data of patients who underwent oncologic esophagectomy (July 2010-March 2019) were extracted from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database. The proportion of patients who underwent early extubation (extubation on the day of surgery) at each hospital was assessed and grouped by quartiles: very low- (<11%), low- (11-37%), medium- (38-83%), and high-proportion (≥84%) hospitals. The primary outcome was respiratory complications; secondary outcomes included reintubation, anastomotic leakage, other major complications, and hospitalization costs. Multivariable regression analyses were performed, adjusting for patient demographics, cancer treatments, and hospital characteristics. A restricted cubic spline analysis was also performed for the primary outcome. RESULTS: Among 37 983 eligible patients across 545 hospitals, early extubation was performed in 17 931 (47%) patients. Early extubation proportions ranged from 0-100% across hospitals. Respiratory complications occurred in 10 270 patients (27%). Multivariable regression analyses showed that high- and medium-proportion hospitals were significantly associated with decreased respiratory complications [odds ratio, 0.46 (95% CI, 0.36-0.58) and 0.43 (0.31-0.60), respectively], reintubation, and hospitalization costs when compared with very low-proportion hospitals. The risk of anastomotic leakage and other major complications did not differ among groups. The restricted cubic spline analysis demonstrated a significant inverse dose-dependent association between the early extubation proportion and the risk of respiratory complications. CONCLUSION: A higher proportion of early extubation in a hospital was associated with a lower occurrence of respiratory complications, highlighting a potential benefit of early extubation after esophagectomy.

Surgical and oncological outcomes of hepatectomy for recurrent hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) after locoregional therapy, including locally recurrent HCC (LR-HCC), were examined. Among 273 consecutive patients who underwent hepatectomy for HCC, 102 with recurrent HCC were included and retrospectively reviewed. There were 35 patients with recurrent HCC after primary hepatectomy and 67 with recurrent HCC after locoregional therapies. Pathologic review revealed 30 patients with LR-HCC. Background liver function was significantly worse in patients with recurrent HCC after locoregional therapy (p = 0.002). AFP (p = 0.031) and AFP-L3 (p = 0.033) serum levels were significantly higher in patients with LR-HCC. Perioperative morbidities were significantly more frequently observed with recurrent HCC after locoregional therapies (p = 0.048). Long-term outcomes of recurrent HCC after locoregional therapies were worse than those after hepatectomy, though there was no prognostic difference according to the recurrence patterns after locoregional therapies. Multivariate analyses showed that prognostic factors for resected recurrent HCC were previous locoregional therapy (hazard ratio [HR] 2.0; p = 0.005), multiple HCCs (HR 2.8; p < 0.001), and portal venous invasion (HR 2.3; p = 0.001). LR-HCC was not a prognostic factor. In conclusion, salvage hepatectomy for LR-HCC showed worse surgical outcomes but a favorable prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Neoadjuvant therapy (NAT) has become common worldwide for resectable advanced esophageal cancer and frequently involves weight loss. Although failure to rescue (death after major complications) is known as an emerging surgical quality measure, little is known about the impact of weight loss during NAT on failure to rescue. This retrospective study aimed to investigate the association of weight loss during NAT and short-term outcomes, including failure to rescue after esophagectomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients who underwent esophagectomy after NAT between July 2010 and March 2019 were identified from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database. Based on quartiles of percent weight change during NAT, patients were grouped into four categories of gain, stable, small loss, and loss (>4.5%). The primary outcomes were failure to rescue and in-hospital mortality. The secondary outcomes were major complications, respiratory complications, anastomotic leakage, and total hospitalization costs. Multivariable regression analyses were used to compare outcomes between the groups, adjusting for potential confounders, including baseline BMI. RESULTS: Among 15 159 eligible patients, in-hospital mortality and failure to rescue occurred in 302 (2.0%) and 302/5698 (5.3%) patients, respectively. Weight loss (>4.5%) compared to gain was associated with increased failure to rescue and in-hospital mortality [odds ratios 1.55 (95% CI: 1.10-2.20) and 1.53 (1.10-2.12), respectively]. Weight loss was also associated with increased total hospitalizations costs, but not with major complications, respiratory complications, and anastomotic leakage. In subgroup analyses, regardless of baseline BMI, weight loss (>4.8% in nonunderweight or >3.1% in underweight) was a risk factor for failure to rescue and in-hospital mortality. CONCLUSION: Weight loss during NAT was associated with failure to rescue and in-hospital mortality after esophagectomy, independent of baseline BMI. This emphasizes the importance of weight loss measurement during NAT to assess the risk for a subsequent esophagectomy.

AIM: WNT/ß-catenin-activated hepatocellular carcinoma (W/B subclass HCC) is considered a molecularly homogeneous entity and has been linked to resistance to immunotherapy. However, recent studies have indicated possible heterogeneity in the immunovascular microenvironment in this subclass. We set out to test the hypothesis that specific immunovascular features might stratify W/B subclass HCCs into tumors having distinct aggressive natures. METHODS: In this study, we analyzed 352 resected HCCs including 78 immunohistochemically defined W/B subclass HCCs. The density of tumor-infiltrating CD3+ T cells and the area ratio of vessels encapsulating tumor clusters (VETC) were calculated on tissue specimens. The gene expressions of angiogenic factors were measured by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. Disease-free survival (DFS) was assessed using multivariable Cox regression analyses. RESULTS: The T-cell density of W/B subclass HCCs was regionally heterogenous within tumor tissues, and focally reduced T-cell density was observed in areas with VETC. VETC-positivity (defined as VETC area ratio greater than 1%) was inversely associated with T-cell infiltration in both W/B subclass and non-W/B subclass HCCs. Fibroblast growth factor 2 (FGF2) gene expression was higher in W/B subclass than in non-W/B subclass HCCs. The VETC-positivity and low T-cell density correlated with increased expression of FGF2 in W/B subclass HCCs. Additionally, VETC-positive HCCs showed significantly shorter DFS in W/B subclass HCCs. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, the immune and vascular microenvironments are interrelated and are also correlated with clinicopathological heterogeneity in W/B subclass HCC. These results could inform clinical practice and translational research on the development of therapeutic stratification of HCCs.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that postoperative non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) use may increase the risk of anastomotic leakage after colorectal surgery. However, the association between NSAIDs and anastomotic leakage after oesophagectomy is unclear. The aim of this retrospective study was to assess the effect of early postoperative NSAID use on anastomotic leakage after oesophagectomy. METHODS: The Data of patients who underwent oesophagectomy for cancer between July 2010 and March 2019 were extracted from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database. Stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting (IPTW), propensity score matching, and instrumental variable analyses were performed to investigate the association between NSAID use in the early postoperative period (defined as the day of and the day after surgery) and short-term outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. The primary outcome was anastomotic leakage. The secondary outcomes were acute kidney injury, gastrointestinal bleeding, and mortality. RESULTS: Among 39 418 eligible patients, early postoperative NSAIDs were used by 16 211 individuals (41 per cent). Anastomotic leakage occurred in 5729 patients (15 per cent). In stabilized IPTW analyses, NSAIDs were not associated with anastomotic leakage (odds ratio 1.04, 95 per cent c.i. 0.97 to 1.10). The proportions of acute kidney injury and gastrointestinal bleeding, as well as 30-day mortality and in-hospital mortality, did not differ according to NSAID use. Propensity score matching and instrumental variable analyses demonstrated similar results. CONCLUSION: Early postoperative NSAID use was not associated with anastomotic leakage or other complications in patients who underwent oesophagectomy.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes is known to be associated with anastomotic leakage (AL) after esophagectomy. However, it is unknown whether well-controlled diabetes is also associated with AL. METHODS: We conducted a two-center retrospective cohort database study of patients who underwent oncological esophagectomy (2011-2019). Patients were divided into four groups: normoglycemia, pre-diabetes, well-controlled diabetes (hemoglobin A1c [HbA1c] < 7.0%), and poorly controlled diabetes (HbA1c ≥ 7.0%). The occurrence of AL and length of stay were compared between groups using multivariable analyses. The relationship between categorical HbA1c levels and AL was also investigated in patients stratified by diabetes medication before admission. RESULTS: Among 1901 patients, 1114 (58.6%) had normoglycemia, 480 (25.2%) had pre-diabetes, 180 (9.5%) had well-controlled diabetes, and 127 (6.7%) had poorly controlled diabetes. AL occurred in 279 (14.7%) patients. Compared with normoglycemia, AL was significantly associated with both well-controlled diabetes (odds ratio 1.83, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.22-2.74) and poorly controlled diabetes (odds ratio 1.95, 95% CI 1.23-3.09), but not with pre-diabetes. Preoperative HbA1c levels showed a J-shaped association with AL in patients without diabetes medication, but no association in patients with diabetes medication. Compared with normoglycemia, only poorly controlled diabetes was significantly associated with longer hospital stay after surgery, especially in patients with operative morbidity (unstandardized coefficient 14.9 days, 95% CI 5.6-24.1). CONCLUSIONS: Diabetes was associated with AL after esophagectomy even in well-controlled patients, but pre-diabetes was not associated with AL. Operative morbidity, including AL, in poorly controlled diabetes resulted in prolonged hospital stays compared with normoglycemia.

PURPOSE: With the advent of a new program for postgraduate medical students in 2004, the number of applicants choosing surgical careers in Japan has been declining. We conducted this study to evaluate the impact of preclinical clerkship and how it affects students' attitudes toward a surgical career. METHODS: The subjects of our study were fifth-year medical students who participated in a clinical clerkship in general surgery in our department between April 2021 and March 2022. We conducted pre- and post-preclinical clerkship surveys to assess the perceived image of surgeons and the impact of clerkship on surgical career interest. RESULTS: Among 132 medical students (77 men and 55 women) who rotated through preclinical clerkship in our department, 125 participated in the survey and 66% expressed interest in a surgical career. In the post-clerkship survey, an increased interest in a surgical career was expressed by 79% of the students; notably, including those who initially expressed interest. Approximately 77% of students were satisfied with the practical skill training they received. CONCLUSION: Engaging medical students early in surgical experience through a preclinical clerkship for general surgery appears to promote their interest in a surgical career.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of preoperative prophylactic corticosteroid use on short-term outcomes after oncologic esophagectomy. BACKGROUND: Previous studies have shown that prophylactic corticosteroid use may decrease the risk of respiratory failure following esophagectomy by attenuating the perioperative systemic inflammation response. However, its effectiveness has been controversial, and its impact on mortality remains unknown. METHODS: Data of patients who underwent oncologic esophagectomy between July 2010 and March 2019 were extracted from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database. Stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting, propensity score matching, and instrumental variable analyses were performed to investigate the associations between prophylactic corticosteroid use and short-term outcomes, such as in-hospital mortality and respiratory failure, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Among 35,501 eligible patients, prophylactic corticosteroids were used in 22,620 (63.7%) patients. In-hospital mortality, respiratory failure, and severe respiratory failure occurred in 924 (2.6%), 5440 (15.3%), and 2861 (8.1%) patients, respectively. In stabilized inverse probability of treatment weighting analyses, corticosteroids were significantly associated with decreased in-hospital mortality [odds ratio (OR)=0.80; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.69-0.93], respiratory failure (OR=0.84; 95% CI: 0.79-0.90), and severe respiratory failure (OR=0.87; 95% CI: 0.80-0.95). Corticosteroids were also associated with decreased postoperative length of stay and total hospitalization costs. The proportion of anastomotic leakage did not differ with the use of Propensity score matching and instrumental variable analysis demonstrated similar results. CONCLUSIONS: Prophylactic corticosteroid use in oncologic esophagectomy was associated with lower in-hospital mortality as well as decreased respiratory failure and severe respiratory failure, suggesting a potential benefit for preoperative corticosteroid use in esophagectomy.

Biliary complications after hepatectomy in living donors have yet to be eradicated. We hypothesized that a standardized upfront Glissonean approach and liver hanging maneuver (GH) would prevent mechanical and thermal injuries to the hilar plate of the remnant liver by determining the point of bile duct division and the final destination of hepatectomy preceding liver parenchymal transection (safety) and facilitate liver transection deep within the parenchyma and allow maximum length of hilar structures (rationality). GH was implemented in 2016 and its incidence of bile leakage was retrospectively compared against the conventional technique. GH comprises six steps: (1) development of the retrohepatic avascular plane between the right hepatic vein (RHV) and the middle hepatic vein (MHV) and isolation of the hepatic vein(s); (2) isolation of the right or left Glissonean pedicle with the corresponding Glissonean pedicles of the caudate lobe; (3) for right liver grafts and left liver grafts with the caudate lobe, passage of the tape for the liver hanging maneuver along the retrohepatic avascular plane and above the hilar plate, and for left liver grafts without the caudate lobe and for left lateral section grafts, passage of the tape from between the RHV and the MHV, along the Arantius ligament, and to the right of the umbilical portion; (4) liver transection; (5) isolation of hilar structures; and (6) graft procurement. Until 2020, 62 consecutive living donors underwent GH (success rate, 100%). The incidence of bile leakage from the hepatic hilum (0%) was significantly lower than that among 59 donors who underwent the conventional technique in 2011-2015 (9%; p = 0.01). In conclusion, GH is highly effective in reducing bile leakage from the hepatic hilum in living donors.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association of BMI with mortality and related outcomes after oncologic esophagectomy. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: Previous studies showed that high BMI was a risk factor for anastomotic leakage and low BMI was a risk factor for respiratory complications after esophagectomy. However, the association between BMI and in-hospital mortality after oncologic esophagectomy remains unclear. METHODS: Data for patients who underwent esophagectomy for esophageal cancer between July 2010 and March 2019 were extracted from a Japanese nationwide inpatient database. Multivariate regression analyses and restricted cubic spline analyses were used to investigate the associations between BMI and short-term outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. RESULTS: Among 39,406 eligible patients, in-hospital mortality, major complications, and multiple complications (≥2 major complications) occurred in 1069 (2.7%), 14,824 (37.6%), and 3621 (9.2%), respectively. Compared with normal weight (18.5-22.9 kg/m 2 ), severe underweight (<16.0 kg/m 2 ), mild/moderate underweight (16.0-18.4 kg/m 2 ), and obese (≥27.5 kg/m 2 )were significantly associated with higher in-hospital mortality [odds ratio 2.20 (95% confidence interval 1.65-2.94), 1.25 (1.01-1.49), and 1.48 (1.05-2.09), respectively]. BMI showed U-shaped dose-response associations with mortality, major complications, and multiple complications. BMI also showed a reverse J-shaped association with failure to rescue (death after major complications). CONCLUSIONS: Both high BMI and low BMI were associated with mortality, major complications and multiple complications after esophagectomy for esophageal cancer. Patients with low BMI were more likely to die once a major complication occurred. The present results can assist with risk stratification in patients undergoing oncologic esophagectomy.
